Riverdale - the cool, sexy version of the Archie comics - is a phenomenon. Merging the squeaky clean characters of Archie, Jughead, Betty, and Veronica into a plot that involves murder, rape, and incest has struck a nerve in the popular consciousness. It was a gamble, but it has seemed to have paid off for the CW. Taking that same template, Jimmy Fallon's The Tonight Show has done the same with Charles Schultz's Peanuts comics. It has murder (with Linus instead of Jason Blossom), the... Read More...

Mouse House fans will be able to get their hands on a rare piece of memorabilia when Walt Disney's last will and testament -- or the first draft, anyway -- auctions off for an estimated $60k! The will was drafted in August 1941 and includes this interesting breakdown: half of his personal Disney stock was split between his 2 kids, and the other half he dropped in an "employees bonus pool." The doc isn't his final will...

25 years ago today, audiences first saw the beloved Christmas comedy movie “Home Alone.” Here’s to a quarter century of kids collecting clever tips on how to outwit would-be burglars, getting spooked by evil furnaces, quoting fictional gangster movies, and (maybe) learning that family is the best gift of all. Directed by Chris Columbus — who would go on to helm the first two “Harry Potter” films — and produced by John Hughes, “Home Alone” became the highest-grossing live action comedy in the U.S. and worldwide after its release in 1990, and it held that record until it was overtaken by “The Hangover: Part II” in 2011. A favorite holiday movie of many, “Home Alone” has secured its place in pop culture with plenty of parodies, with this frightening personalized holiday card, a reference on “Family Guy,” four (mostly ill-advised) sequels, and a John Williams-penned song that’s become a staple of school Christmas concerts.

I had the opportunity to speak with director Steve Martino about a film that is out in theaters, The Peanuts Movie, the first feature-length outing for Charles Schulz’s iconic characters. In 2008, Martino was one of the duo who directed Blue Sky Studios’ Horton Hears A Who!, a theatrical CGI adaptation of Dr. Seuss’ picture book. And in 2012 he also co-directed Ice Age: Continental Drift.
Charlie Brown, Snoopy, Lucy, Linus and the rest of the beloved "Peanuts" gang make their big-screen debut, like they've never been seen before, in state of the art 3D animation. Charlie Brown, the world's most beloved underdog, embarks upon an epic and heroic quest, while his best pal, the lovable beagle Snoopy, takes to the skies to pursue his arch-nemesis, the Red Baron.
Here is what Martino had to say about the film. And below is our exclusive image from the film.

Chicago – They didn’t screw it up, and that is good. Eschewing modern conventions or typical animation pop culture jokes, “The Peanuts Movie” honors its source (Charlie Brown and the gang) and its creator, Charles M. Schultz, in a joyous and nostalgic celebration.
Rating: 3.5/5.0
The filmmakers – director Steve Martino (“Horton Hears a Who”) and writers Craig Schultz (Charles’s son), Bryan Schultz (grandson) and Cornelius Uliano – kept a philosophy of “Wwcsd” (What would Charles Schultz do?), and produced a animated feature that contains the best of what made “Peanuts” great. The look is as if the comic strip has sprung to life, especially in optional 3D, and the character voices and feel have the same warmth as the familiar TV specials (there are several references along the way to those treats as well). The story was incidental to the subplots that played like mini comic strips, featuring Good Ol’ Charlie Brown,...

After a couple lackluster weekends closed out October, November has a pair of new releases looking to reignite the 2015 box office fire. The newest James Bond movie, [Spectre, has already broken records overseas while Fox brings the world of Charles Schultz's iconic characters to CG-animated life with The Peanuts Movie. Both films look to bring in a hefty amount of money this weekend, which will also likely carry over to a strong second weekend before The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2 arrives on November 20. Skyfall opened with $88.3 million in 2012. It was the largest opening for a James Bond film ever as it enjoyed strong reviews and a heavy marketing campaign courtesy of the franchise's 50th anniversary. Spectre can't boast the same in this regard. The hype is obviously huge, yet not on par with Skyfall and the reviews are, rightfully so, more middle of the road. Where Skyfall...

The gang from Charles Schultz. classic comic strip The Peanuts Movie is coming to the big screen, and in a presentation we have never seen. Charlie Brown and his crew have not only escaped the bonds of 2D animation into the CGI world, but the film itself is coming to theaters with the option of whether or not to see it in 3D. Of course, like with every new extra-dimensional movie, there is one big question to ask: is it worth shilling out an extra few bucks for a more technologically advanced theatrical experience? My full review of The Peanuts Movie will be in the review section of our site, but what you.ll find below is a full breakdown of the experience to determine exactly the best way to see the movie on the big screen. To 3D or not to 3D is the query, so read on for...

The respected filmmaker hitting Kickstarter for help phenomenon seems to have died down over the last year or so but along with Zach Braff, Spike Lee was certainly one of the highlights of this short-lived trend. Shaking the virtual tip jar towards a great many people, myself included, he managed to get together a budget of just under $1.5 million, including a $10,000 donation from Steven Soderbergh and so presents us with Da Sweet Blood of Jesus, a somewhat surprise remake of 70’s indie flick Ganja & Hess. Even with my meagre donation, I think it was $10, it’s sad to say that I feel ripped off and I suspect most will.

Very few people will argue with you if you state that A Charlie Brown Christmas is one of the greatest holiday specials of all time. It manages to toe the line of being sweet but not saccharine, sentimental but not overly so, touching on the true meaning of Christmas without being too alienating. (Not to mention that its Vince Guaraldi score is iconic in its own right.) Its Halloween-focused counterpart, It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown, has also stood the test of time and become a holiday television classic. However, those two famous films do not mark the only times that the sad-sack, self-conscious and shy star of Charles Schultz’s long-running comic strip has come to life onscreen alongside his gang of eccentric friends and his goofy beagle, Snoopy.

So many children and generations have grown up with the Peanuts comic strip and holiday cartoons that you wonder if a big-screen adaptation of Charles Schultz’s beloved characters is just overdoing it. For the new film Peanuts, due out November 6, the lovingly hand drawn animation has been done away with for an updated, CGI gloss. And yet this first trailer shows there’s still some modest humor to be had, with Snoopy and his pal Woodstock dreaming up more big adventures as that signature song plays. Charlie Brown and the whole gang make an appearance briefly at the trailer’s end as well.
Peanuts is directed by Steve Martino (Ice Age: Continental Drift, Horton Hears a Who!) and produced by Paul Feig (the upcoming Ghostbusters, Bridesmaids). Check it out below:

Paul Feig is a busy man. Not only does he have Melissa McCarthy's "Spy" coming this summer, he's been talking up his "Ghostbusters" reboot a lot lately, and if that's not enough, he's also lending his producing powers to the upcoming "Peanuts" movie. And the CGI animated effort has a brand new trailer to kick off the New Year. As you may have already noticed from the previous teasers, this is a slickly produced take on Charles Schultz's iconic cartoon for a new generation who are ready to meet the weary Charlie Brown in 3D. The story will follow the beloved beagle Snoopy as he embarks on a new mission as The Red Baron, while Charlie Brown has his own "epic quest" (according to the official synopsis). If there are two words that don't fit at all with Charlie Brown they're "epic quest." "Peanuts" arrives in 3D on November 6th.

A trailer has dropped for Spike Lee’s latest, Da Sweet Blood Of Jesus – aka “the newest, hottest Spike Lee joint,” a no-star, semi-experimental affair made possible with the help of $1.4 million in Kickstarted donations. Gravitas Ventures picked up the re-envisioning of Bill Gunn’s 1973 cult horror film Ganja & Hess, about a doctor who develops a thirst for blood after an art curator introduces him to an ancient African artifact. The thirst consumes his soul as he embarks on a dangerous romance with the curator’s widow that Lee describes as “funny, sexy and bloody. A new kind of love story (and not a remake of Blacula).”

Gravitas Ventures has acquired North American rights to Spike Lee’s Da Sweet Blood Of Jesus starring Zaraah Abrahams and Stephen Tyrone Williams.
The film, which is a reinterpretation of Bill Gunn’s 1973 cult horror classic “Ganja & Hess,” previously made its debut earlier this year at the American Black Film Festival after a successful Kickstarter campaign to fund the production.
Gravitas will release the film theatrically and on video on demand on February 13, 2015.
“Making Da Sweet Blood Of Jesus is one of my most gratifying experiences in my body of work,” said Spike Lee. “The support and love we got raising the money through Kickstarter is a true blessing. I thank everyone who brought this New Spike Lee Joint to life.”
“We are thrilled to collaborate with Spike Lee to release Da Sweet Blood Of Jesus in theatres and on demand across North America,” said Nolan Gallagher, Gravitas Ventures’ Founder and CEO.

It.s been a while since we.ve seen Charlie Brown, Snoopy and the rest of the Peanuts gang. The last Peanuts comic strip was published nearly 15 years ago, shortly before Charles Schultz.s passing, and the last original TV special aired in 2011. Fortunately, the beloved comic strip characters will be returning soon when The Peanuts Movie hits theaters on November 6, 2015. In the meantime, 20th Century Fox and Peanuts Worldwide has released new images of protagonist Charlie Brown and the rest of the cast to tide fans over. I don't know about you, but I'm getting excited about the upcoming Halloween season. This is my favorite time of year, and today we have a wicked cool illustration that pays tribute to Charles Schultz's classic Halloween special It's The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown. The piece was created by Nicolas Delort for Dark Hall Mansion, and what he did is absolutely breathtaking. It has a subtle epic and wondrous tone. I will attempt to get myself a print. There's even a glow-in-the-dark variant!
These prints will be made available at the Dark Hall Mansion Store at a random time on Thursday, October 2nd. Be sure to follow Dark Hall Mansion on Twitter for the announcement.

Charles Schultz once said that "happiness is a warm puppy" but then The Beatles told us -- albeit sarcastically and with a boatload of overtones -- that "Happiness is a Warm Gun." So who to believe? In reality, the idea of what makes people happy has so many different permutations and combinations that it scarcely seems possible to scratch the surface. Or are we making it too difficult? Is it, in the end, a simple answer? In Peter Chelsom's upcoming Hollywood fairy tale, Hector and the Search For Happiness, it seems the answer is somewhere in the middle.
In Hector, Simon Pegg's titular character sets out on a quest to discover just what makes humanity's collective hearts soar. After finding himself stuck in a rut, Hector leaves behind his dull psychiatry practice and understanding girlfriend Clara (Rosamund Pike) to travel around the globe looking for and observing different...

Art and Craft
Directed by Sam Cullman and Jennifer Grausman
Co-directed by Mark Becker
USA, 2014
Mark Landis is a con artist. The documentary about his odd life, Art and Craft, makes that abundantly clear. But Landis hasn’t spent a day in jail in his life and probably never will, because he doesn’t separate people from their money or anything else of monetary value. He doesn’t commit theft or fraud or assault; despite having successfully conned the Smithsonian Institution, he has broken no federal law in 30 years of work. It’s an almost irresistible hook for a documentary: what does Landis do, and how does he get away with it? The movie practically makes itself.
What Landis does is this: he makes copies of famous works of art – by everyone from Picasso to Peanuts creator Charles Schultz – and donates them to museums as though they were the real thing.

Wow, today's been filled with trailers (and tomorrow will be no different with a new Spider-Man trailer) both big and small, so rather than innundate you with a slew of smaller articles, I've decided to lump them all together into one big article filled with footage galore. Come inside to check out teaser trailers, new trailers, and one surprisingly safe for work trailer for Lars Von Trier's Nymphomaniac.
As I said, I'll save the Nymphomaniac trailer (for Part 2) for the last and on a second page just in case you might not want other people to see. While it's way toned down from any of the previous trailers, it's still not something you may want everyone to see in your browser. As for the rest let's get to them! I'm starting things off with the new trailer for Disney's Maleficent:

Good grief! Charlie Brown, Snoopy and the rest of the "Peanuts" gang are the latest cartoon characters to get a CGI relaunch, courtesy of Blue Sky Studios ("Ice Age," "Rio"). The brand new teaser doesn't give much away -- it's basically just a quick "2001" spoof, followed by Charlie and Snoopy running around to the familiar strains of Vince Guaraldi's jazzy theme -- but it serves as a warm reminder of the Charles Schultz characters' endless charm. Watch the teaser here: Steve Martino ("Ice Age: Continental Drift") is directing from a script by Craig Schulz’s son Bryan and Cornelius Uliano. Another Schultz, Craig, is producing alongside Paul Feig ("Bridesmaids"). "Peanuts" opens November 6, 2015.

Dear Mr. Watterson
Directed by Joel Allen Schroeder
USA, 2013
Joel Allen Schroeder’s documentary Dear Mr. Watterson is billed as “An Exploration of ‘Calvin and Hobbes,’” but it might be better described as an adoration of the famed newspaper comic. Not only does every person who appears in the film love “Calvin and Hobbes,” but they love it above all other examples of the form, and view it as the most formative part of their lives. “Calvin and Hobbes” is a masterful work, so the adoration is well-deserved, but such an outpouring of love makes for an uninteresting documentary.
Rather like the odious Salinger from earlier this year, Schroeder has the problem that his author is reclusive in the extreme (in fact, Watterson might be more antisocial than J.D. Salinger was). So he deserves credit, at least, for getting everything right that Salinger got wrong. This picture is not at all oppressive with its adoration,...

In an unexpected move, it turns out the big-screen "Charlie Brown" adaptation that was announced in October is the latest to join the never-ending slate of 3-D movies on tap. Everyone's favorite yellow and black-clad comic-book character is slated for a 2015 theatrical release.
Twentieth Century Fox announced the news Thursday at CinemaCon. Very few details were revealed about the production, and the announcement came only with a 3-D image of Charlie Brown projected onto the screen at the convention, according to The Wrap. Blue Sky Studios, the Fox animation company responsible for "Horton Hears a Who!" and the "Ice Age" series, will create the movie.
Steve Martino ("Horton," "Ice Age: Continental Drift") has been recruited to direct. It took two years to obtain the rights to the beloved story, as creator Charles Schultz, who died in 2000, has kept a tight lock on his material.

Check out this cool Peanuts-inspired zombie tee shirt, which is currently for sale on TeeVolt. It is available in various colors for $12, and looks especially fantastic in black. I don't think that this is what Peanuts creator Charles Schultz had in mind for the characters, but they look cool none-the-less.

Let’s not waste words here. Everyone knows that Batman the Animated Series is one of the greatest shows in the history of television. What can you say about Btas that hasn’t already been said? You can speak of its high production values, brilliant plotting, and inventive story lines. You can talk about how groundbreaking it was for a children’s show to take such an adult approach to the Batman character. You can mention how it is regarded as one of the only incarnations of Batman that gets the tone and setting of Gotham just right.
It laid the foundation for Bruce Timm (the show’s creator) to generate his legendary DC television universe, which includes shows like Superman the Animated Series, Justice League, and Batman Beyond. Brilliant people lent their talents to this enduring work: voice actors Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill, writers Paul Dini and Alan Burnett,...

The executors of Michael Jackson's estate, who pay the rent on the home his mother, Katherine Jackson, shares with Michael's three children, have sent a letter banning Michael's siblings Randy, Jermaine, Janet and Rebbie Jackson from the house.
"After an incident where Randy, Jermaine and Janet Jackson crashed through the gate and tried to remove Michael's kids from the home, a new security list of who was allowed in was made," a family friend told me.
Last week, Katherine Jackson announced plans to file for joint custody of the three children with the late King of Pop's nephew, T.J. Jackson -- who is Tito's son. Katherine temporarily lost guardianship on July 25 after a Los Angeles Superior Court judge ruled that she had been unable to oversee the children properly due. When Henry James re-edited his complete works for the so-called New York Editions, photography had recently emerged as an artistic technology and a shiny new means of telling stories. Critics such as Charles Baudelaire scorned the camera, claiming it didn't allow for human interpretation of events the way painting did. It didn't allow the audience to use their imagination, either. "It is useless and tedious to represent what exists, because nothing that exists satisfies me," Baudelaire wrote. "I prefer the monsters of my fantasy to what is positively trivial."
But as any photographer will tell you, people view the world from different vantage points. Where some saw a stifling medium of mindless shutter-clicking, James saw an opportunity. He hired a photographer Alvin Langdon Coburn to illustrate the covers of his novels and asked that the artist abide by one rule: That the images suggest more than they specify.

Joyce Pensato: Batman Returns Friedrich Petzel Gallery Through February 25, 2012
In the 1970s, The Joker, Batman's greatest nemesis, had his own nine-issue comic book series, in which he faced off against a variety of both superheroes and supervillains. Because of the restrictive "comic books code," "good" ultimately had to triumph over "evil" in every storyline. This led to some creative writing strategies -- that is, how to make one of the most morally unhinged villains in superhero lore appear to do something "good" every third issue.
In the fourth and fifth issue, this problem was solved by The Joker's kidnapping of a Charles Schultz-like character and keeping him a prisoner in the HaHaHacienda. Although The Joker demanded a huge ransom for the return of Gotham's beloved cartoonist, he also derived great, sadistic pleasure from forcing the artist to write cartoons in which the Charlie Brown character was drowned, beaten up,...

First off, huge congratulations to Cheyenne Jackson and his boyfriend husband Monte Lapka, who just got married in a beach ceremony in the Hamptons. As Cheyenne tweeted, "It's official, after 11 years together, Zora's no longer a bastard. Just married the best man I've ever known."
The Vatican is so upset that the Irish government called them out publicly for being uncooperative in the pedophile priest problem in that country that they've recalled their official envoy. Seriously, with scandal after scandal, each one finding the church covered up the abuse for decades, they have the balls to play the outraged victim again?
If this article that is about registering the poor to vote being un-American isn't enough to give you an aneurysm, then head on into the comments where it gets so much worse. It seems that for these commenters, you should have to be a wealthy landowner in order to have the right to suffrage.

We know actress Eliza Dushku best as the reckless Slayer Faith on Buffy The Vampire Slayer, and she later starred in another Joss Whedon show, Dollhouse, on Fox. (We prefer to forget about Tru Calling.) But Dushku, who also appeared off-Broadway in the dark Charles Schultz' "Peanuts" satire Dog Loves God, will be hopping on over to USA this season to appear in the ninth episode of the third season of White Collar.

Everyone loves Merry Christmas Charlie Brown. It is a holiday staple right up there with Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer and How the Grinch Stole Christmas. Building off of that popularity, Charlie Brown Christmas Tales is a collection of short stories that further dive into the various traditions and moments of the holiday season, told through the eyes of Charles Schultz beloved Peanuts characters. However, the most interesting and successful story on the disc might be the one that has nothing to do with the holidays.
There are only a few short stories involving Christmas. Each of them running only a few minutes long they deal with issues like trying to find the perfect gift, and how to write the optimal Christmas wish list to Santa so as to yield the most and best gifts. Each of these stories has the same charm that we expect from the Peanuts gang,...

War And Russian Cinema, London
This week marks the 66th anniversary of the end of the siege of Leningrad, one of the most destructive episodes of the second world war, and honouring the occasion is a trio of films at the Lumière on Russia's painful wartime experience. Leading the way is the premiere of Leningrad, an epic, beautifully acted tale from deep inside the 900-day Nazi siege of the city, in which two women (Mira Sorvino and Olga Sutulova) cope with the continual threat of death, starvation and violence. It's followed by a Q&A session with director Alexander Buravsky. The other entries are Mikhail Kalatozov's 1957 Palme D'Or winner, The Cranes Are Flying, which concentrates on the psychological damage the war inflicted on the Soviet psyche, and 2001's Stalingrad-based sniper movie Enemy At The Gates starring Jude Law, Joseph Fiennes and Ed Harris.

The #7 film on Film Junk’s list is a recent favorite, and as such is probably at a higher ranking than it would be had it come out years before. Regardless, I am very pleased that despite the gang’s split votes regarding the decade’s animation, Fantastic Mr. Fox has emerged as a consensus pick, allowing us one more chance to pimp this thing out while it is still in theaters. As the decade began, Wes Anderson was King Shit of Indie Mountain, coming off of the modest success of Bottle Rocket and the breakout of Rushmore. While The Royal Tenenbaums was still well loved, for others it opened the door to the criticisms that continued to dog the new auteur throughout the decade: a reliance on the same themes of rich kids with daddy issues, Futura, old LPs, and senseless character quirks. To make things worse, Wes was...

Earlier this morning, Wake-Up Video celebrated the birthday of Mohandas Gandhi and today's International Day of Non-Violence. But I'd be remiss if I didn't also offer up a tip of the cyber-hat to another anniversary today, as October 2, 1950 marked the debut of Charles Schultz's "Peanuts" comic strip. The simple three-panel daily told the story of Charlie Brown and the various satellite characters that make up his strange childhood. It was a funny, sweet and always painfully existential exploration of growing up in post-war America and spawned an infinite number of animated series, merchandise tie-ins, books and films. In a poetic bit of irony, the final "Peanuts" strip ran in newspapers on February 13, 2000 — the day after Schultz died.
"Peanuts" not only gave life to Charlie Brown but also to Snoopy, his devoted dog and the sometimes more-famous face of the franchise. Snoopy lived a life of fantasy and adventure, but...

For those who thought the weekly piece of awesome doesn't hit till Wednesday or Thursday, think again. Timothy Lim and Jean Luc Pham have gone and created a few panels of what they believe Charles Schultz's Peanuts would look like if they were, well, Frank Miller's Peanuts. In this hilarious scene, Charlie Brown (bald, brooding) prepares to throw Linus a pitch while the two play baseball. But while Linus is all fun and games, Charlie's inner voice is out for blood and revenge ... and all that juicy stuff. (ie: "It flies long enough for me to imagine it killing him in all kinds of ways." Love it!) The title of the piece is Schultz City: That Yellow Shirted Such And Such, and you can check out both images below.

Charles Schultz' Peanuts are hitting the web with a 20-episode original series from Warner Brothers released exclusively through iTunes. The series is releasing episodes two at a time, with the first two episodes available for free as a little hook to lure fans into the $7.99 season pass. (Two-episode bundles can be snatched up for $.99 a piece.) A day before Election Day, the series kicks off with few political comics — like a Linus/Charlie Brown campaign for class president where despite a sure lock on the election, the ticket collapses due to a fateful final speech. Produced by Warner Premiere, the studio's digital production company, the series is being released through Warner Bros. Digital Distribution and is being billed as the first fully animated series in the company's Motion Comics digital content category. This summer the company rolled out motion comics of Superman, Batman: Mad Love and Watchmen also through iTunes,...

My childhood, and that of most people from my generation, is partially tethered to Charlie Brown specials. In 1972, Charles Schultz got political with the release of You're Not Elected, Charlie Brown. Charlie Brown, it should be noted, didn't run for the office, because Lucy took an informal poll and determined that he had a zero percent chance of winning.
