Jurors declared themselves “deadlocked” Friday at the California civil trial over whether Suge Knight should be held liable – and pay millions in damages – for killing married Compton dad Terry Carter with his Ford Raptor truck seven years ago amid a parking lot dispute with another man linked to the N.W.A. biopic Straight Outta Compton.
The jurors told the judge their vote was split seven-to-five without confirming which way they were leaning. They need nine votes out of 12 for a verdict in the wrongful death case centered on claims of negligence and battery.

Exclusive: Producer Steve Whitney and his company Tsw Films have purchased Suge Knight’s life rights with plans to develop a biopic on the infamous music mogul, bringing Nick Cassavetes and Anthony Thorne aboard to write the script.
The former music exec born Marion Hugh “Suge” Knight Jr. co-founded the iconic label Death Row Records in 1991 and is credited with bringing the subgenre of gangsta rap into the mainstream. Artists signed to the label included Dr. Dre, Snoop Dog and Tupac Shakur—and those three acts alone changed the face of hip hop with the release of the groundbreaking albums The Chronic, Doggystyle and All Eyez on Me. Knight’s label had enormous success with over 50 artists and profits of over $100 million a year, but fell into bankruptcy after the departure of Dr. Dre and Snoop Dog, the murder of Tupac and the 2018 incarceration of Knight on charges of voluntary manslaughter.

There are several constants that you find in a David Ayer movie. He loves to explore the world of crime, as well as the thin lines of good and evil that exist within the criminal underworld. The same goes for when he’s focusing on cops. We’ve seen Ayer’s best with End of Watch and Fury (plus his script for Training Day), as well as his worst with Suicide Squad (even if that wasn’t completely his fault). His newest outing, The Tax Collector, has several elements of good Ayer, as well as bad Ayer. The end result is a frustrating experience that hints at his talents but manages to let you down. The film is a mix of crime drama and action outing, more or less what you’d come to expect from this particular storyteller. David Cuevas (Bobby Soto) is a family man, first and foremost,...

You wouldn’t know it from the marketing campaign, but Shia Labeouf is not the star of “The Tax Collector.” And for once, the actor isn’t the most interesting thing about a film he’s involved with — this despite the fact that he’s attracted a lot of press over getting his chest tattooed for the part. Ironically, there’s just one scene — our last view of Labeouf — in which audiences can spot the ink. Otherwise, “Creeper” (a nickname now permanently inked on his abdomen) comes across more menacing in the neatly pressed oxford shirt, necktie and banker’s vest he wears for most of .
The real star of “The Tax Collector” — the gangland “tax collector” of the film’s title — is relative newcomer Bobby Soto. Picture a youthful Che Guevara with a tidy metrosexual beard, and you’ll understand what Ayer saw in the actor, who could easily...

Former rap mogul Marion “Suge” Knight experienced a setback in his ongoing legal saga during a court hearing Tuesday, as Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Stephen Marcus rejected Knight’s motion to dismiss the murder case against him. Knight is facing murder and attempted murder charges stemming from a January hit-and-run incident in Compton, California, during which he allegedly ran over Cle Sloan and Terry Carter, killing Carter and injuring Sloan. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges. Knight’s attorney had contended that the case should be dismissed because Sloan failed to identify Knight as the driver of the truck during.

Security footage of an alleged ambush could help Suge Knight's defense against his murder charges, his lawyer said Wednesday. Knight's attorney, David Kenner, did not elaborate about the contents of the video, but he told the AP that details about his client's case have been one-sided and that people should remain objective. TMZ first reported about the unreleased surveillance footage, which comes from a Compton burger joint's parking-lot cameras. Sources told TMZ that the tape shows Cle Sloan and another person pointing guns at Knight before the hip-hop mogul escapes.Sloan's lawyer told the Daily News the report is inaccurate because his client did not have a gun during the hit-and-run. The L.A. County Sheriff's Department has confirmed it has some sort of video from the eatery but hasn't commented on its contents. Some outlets have reported that the altercation that prompted last month's fatal crash could have...

By the time his first court session was over on Tuesday, Marion "Suge" Knight was hurrying to a hospital in an ambulance. The AP reports the former hip-hop mogul complained about chest pain following his arraignment for last week's hit-and-run crash, which left actor Terry Carter dead and filmmaker Cle Sloan injured. Mark Blankenship, Knight's business associate, told CNN that Knight is looking for special medicine for an undisclosed condition. TMZ described the incident as a panic attack, but other specifics are unavailable.Knight's attorneys claim he was trying to escape a burger-stand parking lot for fear of his life, after an argument that took place on the set of the N.W.A. biopic Straight Outta Compton. At the arraignment, lawyer David Kenner said Knight feels bad about Carter's death, but it wasn't his fault. Sloan is recovering in a secret location under high security, according to his lawyer, but has...
