I had a chance to watch the first three episodes of the new Netflix limited series “Beef” last night, and it didn’t take long before I was hooked. It came inside of 10 minutes. Steven Yeun (as the suicidal contractor Danny Cho) and Ali Wong (as the wealthy but tortured boutique entrepreneur Amy Lau) are brilliant and deserving of all the praise that’s already been heaped upon them, and the narrative and production are irresistibly intriguing and discomforting. But what struck me was how quickly I forgot I was watching a production filled almost exclusively with Asian American actors. It all became rather seamless, even as the storyline alluded the players’ ethnicity.
The reception greeting the series that despite its title deals with beef mostly metaphorically (stemming from a road rage incident leading to an elongated feud that makes the protagonists feel alive) has been deservedly exalted, bolstered by major word of mouth.

Disney’s latest pandemic film release is “Raya and the Last Dragon,” an animated tale starring Kelly Marie Tran as lone warrior Raya, on a quest to track down the last living dragon, a.k.a. the only species that can stop the invading Druun monsters who threaten to destroy the world of Kumandra.
The film will be released in theaters and via Disney+ Premier Access beginning March 5, which means that if you can’t make it to the theater (or movie theaters are still closed in your area), existing Disney+ subscribers can pay $29.99 for a copy of the film that will be available to watch on a special premium tier of the...

As the Tampa Bay Buccaneers cruised to their first Super Bowl victory since 2002 Sunday night, the commercial breaks — as they often do — provided a bit of bonus entertainment.
As always, an array of trailers aired during the big game, and while the ongoing pandemic means there’s still a cloud of doubt hanging over blockbuster season 2021 (at least in the non-streaming service world), Hollywood still had plenty to tease, from Eddie Murphy’s Coming 2 America to the latest installment in the Fast and Furious franchise. Disney dropped a new trailer today (view below) for “Raya and the Last Dragon” (opening in theaters and streaming on Disney+ March 5), and last week screened 30 minutes of footage for select journalists. It’s very evident that the animation studio is doubling down on cultural diversity with the badass warrior princess from Southeast Asia. Yet there’s a new wrinkle in the latest evolution of the Disney Princess story. The fearless Raya (voiced by Vietnamese American Kelly Marie Tran of “Star Wars” fame) discovers that she can’t save her fractious kingdom of Kumandra alone — she needs the help of a water dragon, Sisu (Awkwafina), the last of its species, which transforms into a funny, if awkward, human, and a ragtag team of adversaries to fight a powerful force known as the Druun.

When this ABC sitcom was renewed for a sixth season (despite low ratings), Constance Wu wasn't exactly overjoyed about the news. Though the actress later stated that she still loves Fresh Off the Boat, the renewal meant that she had to pass on other projects that she had been excited about doing. Unless she is contractually obligated to make a seventh season, it seems likely that Wu wouldn't want to continue with the show. Could the show continue without her? Will Fresh Off the Boat be cancelled or renewed for season seven? Stay tuned. *Status update below.

Fresh Off the Boat will not be back for a seventh season. The family comedy series end its run with an hour-long series finale on Friday, February 21 at 9 Pm.
The decision was expected. Ratings for the series have not been particularly strong this fall on Friday. What’s more, most TV cast contracts are up after six seasons, and judging by star Constance Wu’s reaction to the Season 6 renewal in May, few expected that she would be eager to continue when her deal is up in May as her feature career had taken off with Crazy Rich Asians and Hustlers.
Other key auspices also have moved on or preparing their new chapter. Fotb creator Nahnatchka Khan earlier this year left her longtime studio home, 20th Century Fox TV, which produces Fotb, for a deal at Universal TV. And star Randall Park recently launched a production company, signing a first-look...

Constance Wu is getting back on the Boat, it seems.
The actress is now expressing gratitude for ABC’s decision to renew her comedy Fresh Off the Boat for a sixth season, following a much-publicized outburst on Twitter. Wu now admits her tweets were “ill-timed” and says she’s “so grateful” the show was renewed, thanking fans for their support:

Update: Wu has clarified her previous comments in another tweet, and said that her words were caused by a “rough day” and that she was grateful and “proud to be a part of” the ABC show.
Although fans may rejoice that ABC’s sitcom “Fresh Off the Boat” just got renewed, star Constance Wu is not one of them.
The actress took to social media quickly after the news was announced on Friday, tweeting the cryptic message: “So upset right now that I’m literally crying. Ugh. F—-.” She followed it up with another tweet: “F—ing hell.” When a user congratulated her on the renewal, calling it “Great news,” Wu commented back: “No it’s not.”
If her disdain wasn’t clear enough, Wu covered her bases by going on the show’s renewal post on Instagram and commenting “Dislike.”

Constance Wu Rage Tweets in Wake of Fresh Off the Boat Renewal: 'F--king Hell... So Upset Right Now'
Constance Wu is fresh outta effs.
The Fresh Off the Boat actress took to social media late Friday to vent about ABC’s decision to renew her sitcom for a sixth season. That’s right, it appears Wu — who starred in the summer sleeper Crazy Rich Asians — is upset that the network did not cancel Fresh Off the Boat. Reps for ABC and 20th Television declined to comment. TVLine has also reached out to Wu’s camp for a comment. (Update: Wu issues mea culpa, calls Twitter rant “ill-timed.”)

Up TV and Freeform have licensed the cable syndication rights to ABC’s family sitcom Fresh Off the Boat from Twentieth TV. The comedy will join Up TV and Freeform’s lineups later this year. The deal for both networks includes all four seasons plus the recently picked up season five of the series.
The pact comes only two months before Fotb is eligible for a syndication run this September. The late dealmaking is in line with the changed realities of the off-network business, with cable networks relying more on originals vs. acquired programming and taking their time to see how broadcast sitcoms perform over multiple seasons before moving in to buy them. The height of the cable syndication market was several years ago when TBS paid record price for CBS/Wbtv’s then red-hot comedy 2 Broke Girl after one season. The series’ ratings tapered off quickly after that.

Another horror fan drops me a line on "Nine Dead," starring Melissa Joan, which is moving towards a mid 2009 release date. A trailer is already online at the "Nine Dead," homepage; yet, this feature seems to be taking a line out of the original "Saw," movie play book, with central characters banding together to solve a puzzle and the title, a play on words of the saying, "a cat has nine lives," seems pretty kitschy.
From the trailer, the use of hoods and wooden posts seems to be an attempt by writer Patrick Wehe Mahoney, or director Chris Shadley to play up on the viewer's fear of hostage taking abroad. And is the title "Nine Dead," revealing the ending of the film? Have a look at a couple stills of Melissa Joan Hart at her bloody best and the first trailer that has a dark, sinister appeal.
