The stars and artists behind the biggest films of 2023 descended on London this weekend for the BAFTA Film Awards. British film’s biggest night is often seen as the best predictor of Oscar momentum before the Academy Awards and the results often mirror each other.
If that’s the case this year, it will be all “Oppenheimer” all the time. Universal’s Christopher Nolan epic took home many of the night’s biggest categories, winning the top prize of Best Film along with Best Director for Nolan, Leading Actor for Cillian Murphy, and Supporting Actor for Robert Downey Jr. The film also picked up major craft wins for Cinematography, Editing, and Original Score.
While the dominant showing makes an “Oppenheimer” Oscar sweep seem even more likely, Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Poor Things” won for Costume Design, Makeup & Hair, Production Design, and Visual Effects, and star Emma Stone won Leading Actress for her...

In case you didn’t know, animation directors are also auteurs. According to Yahoo Finance, the global animation market reached more than $400 billion at the end of 2023. That was up from $391 billion one year before. And yet, animated projects are not automatically covered by the WGA, are separate from the DGA, and are consistently overlooked for their filmmaking achievements.
Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K. Thompson, the directing trio of Sony Animation’s animated box office smash “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” tell Variety‘s Awards Circuit Podcast that there are some critically needed changes in Hollywood.
“I think it’s worth repeating: animation is a big business for the industry,” says Dos Santos. “We bring a ton to the table; without it, everybody hurts. I also want to add that doing an animated film shouldn’t be a sacrifice for the artist doing it.”

It takes multiple hands of masters, artists and filmmakers to bring a story to life, no matter the cinematic medium. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has designated categories to recognize the achievements of artists working on animation, documentary features, and shorts, an opportunity to be rewarded. However, just because you directed or produced one of these specialty films doesn’t mean these contributions will be officially named in the Oscar nominations.
To the untrained Oscar eye, it might not be obvious that despite “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” picking up a nomination for best animated feature, one of the three directors, Joaquim Dos Santos, was not among the listed nominees. It’s an arbitrary rule of the Academy that only four “teams” may be recognized in the animated feature category.
The official nominees from “Spider-Verse” are Dos Santos’ fellow directors Kemp Powers and Justin K. Thompson, producing partners Phil Lord and Christopher Miller,...

Awards season continues. For a year with a lot of notable box office anomalies, the award recognitions are stacked with popular choices. The Golden Globes kicked things off, and then the SAG Awards and Critics Choice Awards started to show audiences who are seen as the favorites to win this year. Then, the Emmys threw a spotlight on the achievements made in television this past year, and now the list for the 2024 BAFTAs have been announced.
As seen in the previous awards ceremonies, Oppenheimer and Poor Things lead the charge in nominations. Christopher Nolan’s atomic bomb film is a stunning achievement for the director as he is known to put out summer films that straddle the line of prestigious awards movies, and Oppenheimer is finally cracking through with nominations for his actors’ performances, as well as his directing and screenwriting. So far, Sony’s animated comic book sequel has grossed $290.4 million in North America and $215.9 million internationally, which brings its worldwide tally to a mighty $506.3 million. Back in December 2022, Preston Mutanga combined two of his biggest interests by recreating the first trailer for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse shot-for-shot using Lego blocks and figures. Once the ambitious project was done, the 14-year-old uploaded the clip online and caught the attention of the film’s producers, who would go on to hire him as an animator for a scene set in a Lego universe.
In an interview with The New York Times, producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (both of whom directed The Lego Movie) said they reached out to him after deciding to include a Lego sequence in Across the Spider-Verse.
“We found out that it was a 14-year-old kid who made it and we were like, ‘This looks incredibly sophisticated for a nonadult, nonprofessional to have made,'” Miller told The Times. “It blew us all away, including some of the best animators in the world.

‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’ New Trailer: Miles Morales Meets Oscar Isaac’s Spider-Man 2099
Multiverses are all the rage these days, but nobody does a multiverse like Spider-Man — specifically, like Miles Morales. Five years after the critically acclaimed, Oscar-winning “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” first hit theaters, the sequel “Across the Spider-Verse” is hitting theaters this June, and Sony has released the final trailer for the upcoming animated film.
2018’s “Into the Spider-Verse” introduced audiences to Miles Morales (voiced by Shameik Moore), an ordinary New York City teenager whose life changes when he gets bit by a radioactive spider and replaces the deceased Peter Parker (Chris Pine) of his universe in the mantle of Spider-Man. The film also saw him team up with multiple versions of Spider-Man to save the multiverse, including Peter B. Parker (Jake Johnson) and Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld). The movie grossed $384.3 million worldwide against a $90 million budget and was widely acclaimed for its animation, winning the Best Animated Feature Oscar at that year’s Academy Awards.

It’s time to catch up with our man, Miles. In true Spider-man fashion, Morales is having a hell of a time trying to balance his personal life, including school and family, with his superhero-ing. Sony has just dropped the new trailer of the newest entry from Joaquim Dos Santos, Justin K. Thompson, and Kemp Powers. This time around, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-verse is attempting to outdo any parallel multiverse story with even more Spider-People than you can imagine, and even placing the fate of all of them on Miles’ shoulders.
The plot synopsis from Sony Pictures reads,
Miles Morales returns for the next chapter of the Oscar®-winning Spider-Verse saga, an epic adventure that will transport Brooklyn’s full-time, friendly neighborhood Spider-Man across the Multiverse to join forces with Gwen Stacy and a new team of Spider-People to face off with a villain more powerful than anything they have ever encountered.

Sony dropped the second trailer for its upcoming Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse on Wednesday night and it features a more detailed look at the “elite crew with all the best Spider-people.”
The nearly three-minute trailer begins with Miles Morales/Spider-Man’s encounter with the multiverse traversing The Spot. It also sees Gwen Stacy introducing Miles to a whole host of new Spider-people at a building, that gives off a Citadel of Ricks vibe.
We also get a prolonged look at Oscar Isaac’s Miguel O’Hara/Spider-Man 2099 who challenges Miles’ sense of morality and ethics. And with the seemingly infinite number of Spider-people, the filmmakers couldn’t resist dropping in the Spider-Man pointing meme.
The sequel’s returning voice cast includes Shameik Moore as Morales, Hailee Steinfeld as Stacy/Spider-Gwen, Jake Johnson as Peter B. Parker, Luna Lauren Velez as Rio Morales and Brian Tyree Henry as Jefferson Davis. Additionally,...

Miles Morales is about to encounter more Spider-People than he ever imagined. And thanks to a new poster for “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” we know that includes the Scarlet Spider and even Spidercat. But if you look closely, you’ll spot even more.
The image, released Tuesday morning, once again places Shameik Moore’s Miles Morales at the center of the action. But, where he’s upside down, the rest of the Spider-Verse is right side up, and staring directly at you. And like we said, there are a lot of them. There are the obvious staples, like Hailee Steinfeld’s Spider-Gwen and Oscar Isaac’s returning Spider-Man 2099. But fans are pretty stoked to see some other variants, too.
To Miles’ left is someone who appears to be Ben Reilly, also known as Scarlet Spider. “When the Scarlet Spider comes to the silver screen, my time on this Earth is...

Get ready for another trip through the Spider-Verse.
Sony has unveiled the official trailer for “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” the sequel to its critically-acclaimed 2018 animated film “Into the Spider-Verse.”
The trailer begins with a slightly older Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) talking with his mom, who’s worried that he’s not her little boy anymore. After some flashbacks to the original movie, new footage shows off Miles and Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld) traveling through different universe and running into dozens of alternate Spider-Men. There are also first looks at Issa Rae’s motorcycle-riding Spider-Woman, Jorma Taccone’s high-flying villain Vulture and Oscar Isaac’s brutal Spider-Man 2099.
After a touching message from Miles’ mom, the trailer cuts to the young hero being attacked by dozens of alternate Spider-Men while web-slinging around. It seems like things are a bit different in Spider-Man 2099’s world, as he and Gwen argue over who are the real heroes.
