Obvious Child is a new film that has its roots in a short film of the same name from 2009. The film relates the fall-out from a one-night stand by a stand-up comic trying to make her way in the world. The story is about an adult woman, who works in a very child-like profession that must handle various adult-level crises simultaneously.
Gillian Robespierre, a relative novice with a handful of credits, directed both this film and the short. This is her first feature-length directing job and she also is the primary writer of both the long and short version.
The film opens with Donna Stern (Jenny Slate) on stage engaged in a filthy and hilarious monologue. Donna is a stand-up comic working in Brooklyn. She is in her twenties and is relatively happy as an underpaid comic. By which I mean she has a menial job to help support herself...

Fox News Channel chief Roger Ailes will make a rare appearance on CNN on June 15, when the network premieres 41ON41, a profile of President George H.W. Bush. The gimmick is that 41 people will be seen on screen, talking about Bush – including Ailes, who was a campaign advisor. And yes, the two-hour film, weaving first-person accounts of the policy decisions and personal life experiences that shaped Bush’s life and presidency, is premiering on Father’s Day — and three days after Bush celebrates his 90th birthday. The George Bush Presidential Library Foundation funded the film, which is executive produced by Bush’s former White House speechwriter Mary Kate Cary and Rick Kaplan, formerly of CNN and ABC News. The film team also includes Nancy Stern Winters and Lisa Lax at Lookalike Productions who produced and directed the film. In addition to former First Lady Barbara Bush, the film’s 41 storytellers include:...

"Nine for IX," Espn's new documentary series about female sport figures from women directors, begins tonight with "Venus Vs.," a film from Ava DuVernay ("Middle of Nowhere") that looks at tennis star Venus Williams and her fight to secure equal prize money for men and women at Wimbledon. It's an appropriate kickoff topic for the series, tennis being the foremost sport in which the female competitors secure as much attention as the men in a pro realm otherwise overwhelmingly skewed toward male-dominated games. (Of the films in the initial "30 for 30" series to which "Nine for IX" is a companion, only two were about women -- Lisa Lax and Nancy Stern's "Unmatched," about the rivalry between Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova, and John Singleton's "Marion Jones: Press Pause.") Billie Jean King campaigned for equal prize money when the open era began, convincing the Us Open to become the...

Tribeca’s 12th annual festival, running from April 17-28, recently announced the lineup for the 7th annual Espn Sports Film Festival. “Founded to broaden the audience for independent film through stories about sports and competition,” all of this year’s Espn Sports Film Festival films will screen at Tribeca Cinemas on Saturday, April 27. The films also screen prior to April 27 throughout the Festival, starting from Friday, April 19th with the gala premiere of Kevin Connolly’s Big Shot. Big Shot “chronicles John Spano’s fraudulent purchase of the New York Islanders. In 1997, Spano bought the New York Islanders for a staggering $165 million. The scheme behind Spano’s acquisition of the team is revealed as Big Shot takes viewers behind the scenes of the biggest fraud in hockey history.” See below for the official press release.

The program will kick-off with Kevin Connolly’s Big Shot, which will serve as the program’s gala premiere. Espn's documentary series "30 for 30," now in the midst of its second round of 30 films, has brought the world some great work from the likes of Steve James, Albert Maysles and Brett Morgen, but has also tended to skew very male both in terms of subjects and filmmakers. There have been a few exceptions -- Lisa Lax, Nancy Stern and Hannah Storm looked at the rivalry between Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova in "Unmatched," John Singleton focused on Marion Jones and Barbara Kopple helmed "The House of Steinbrenner" -- but now Espn Films and executive producers Robin Roberts and Jane Rosenthal are launching a slate of docs entirely focused on women in sports and directed by female filmmakers. The series is called "Nine for IX," and will air July 2 through August 27 on Espn, Tuesdays at 8pm Et. The roster includes plenty of familiar names, among them "Middle of Nowhere" director Ava DuVernay and Heidi Ewing and.

Just in time to satiate tennis fans after the finish of the U.S Open, a new Espn documentary about the legendary rivalry between Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert is set to premiere Tuesday night on Espn. Unmatched, from filmmakers Lisa Lax and Nancy Stern Winters and producer Hannah Storm, focuses on the relationship of seeming opposites who captivated the world during the golden age of women’s tennis in the 1970s and '80s, when Navratilova and Evert played each other 80 times. "Chrissie" was portrayed as America's sweetheart, whereas "Navrat the Brat," who defected from her native Czechoslovakia in 1975, was often portrayed as a villain. Sportswriter Johnette Howard also chronicled the unlikely relationship in her 2005 book The Rivals: Chris Evert vs. Martina Navratilova Their Epic Duels and Extraordinary Friendship. “Unmatched, a documentary on Espn as part of its ongoing anniversary 30 for 30 series, is a lovely and remarkable little film,...
