Layoffs are expected to hit Disney-owned Pixar Animation Studios later this year.
Tech Crunch, which first reported the news, suggested that this could affect as much as 20 percent of Pixar’s 1,300 workforce, though The Hollywood Reporter understands this estimate is higher than what is actually being planned. According to Tech Crunch, layoffs may include employees hired to create content for Disney+.
THR has reached out to Pixar for comment.
If layoffs do occur, it would follow another rare round of layoffs at the Disney-owned studio. Last June, Pixar was hit by the Disney layoffs, which affected 75 employees, including Lightyear director Angus MacLane and producer Galyn Susman.
Since the start of the pandemic, Pixar — which maintains its campus in Emeryville, outside San Francisco — has seen its remarkable success streak suffer. That includes Lightyear, its 2023 return to theatrical exhibition, which flopped.

After one of the most impressive winning streaks in Hollywood history, Pixar has seen its fortunes reversed in recent years, with last year’s flop Lightyear and a pandemic-era policy of sending its features straight to streaming at Disney+. Now, Pixar faces a major test of brand strength as it prepares to unveil Elemental, its first original theatrical feature since Covid-19 hit.
Directed by Peter Sohn, the film is based on an original story set in a world where fire, water, earth and air residents live together. Among early reviews, the title has an underwhelming 64 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, a low number for Pixar. The recent Disney layoffs that shed 7,000 employees company-wide included 75 positions at Pixar, marking the animation studio’s largest jobs cut since 2013.
The restructuring plan originally announced by Disney CEO Bob Iger in February to consolidate the company’s film and television divisions and save $5.5 billion in costs was executed on May 23rd. According to Reuters, Lightyear director Angus MacLane and long-time producer Galyn Susman — who was credited with rescuing 1999’s Toy Story 2 after nearly every file of the film was accidentally deleted during production — were among those eliminated from the animator’s 1,200-member staff.
The decision follows the troubled release of 2022’s Toy Story spin-off film Lightyear, which barely broke its $200 million budget with a worldwide gross of $226.7 million, along with less-than-stellar reviews and at least one case of existential crisis. Similarly, Disney’s last round of Pixar layoffs was initiated in 2013 following the delayed production and creative overhaul of 2015’s The Good Dinosaur.

San Francisco, June 4 (Ians) The director and producer of ‘Lightyear’, the Chris Evans-headlined ‘Toy Story’ spinoff film, are among those affected in the recent job cuts at Walt Disney’s Pixar Animation Studio, reports ‘Deadline’.
Director Angus MacLane and Producer Galyn Susman were among the 7,000 layoffs Disney had planned in late May.
Their film based on the ‘Toy Story’ character of Buzz Lightyear, attracted bans in several Islamic countries due to a scene featuring a same-sex kiss between Uzo Aduba’s female character Alisha Hawthorne and her partner Kiko, and caused a net loss of $106 million to the studio despite positive reviews, according to ‘Deadline’.
MacLane, a 26-year animator, was part of the senior creative team of ‘Coco’, ‘Incredibles 2’ and ‘Toy Story 4’, and Susman had been at the studio since the original Toy Story was released in 1995. The two were among the 75 employees laid off by Pixar.

Among the layoffs that took place at the Walt Disney Company were job cuts at Pixar that included the director and producer of Lightyear, Deadline has confirmed.
Director Angus MacLane, a 26-year animator who was part of the Senior Creative Team in animated films like Coco, Incredibles 2 and Toy Story 4, was cut from the studio in late May, which was part of the 7,000 layoffs Disney had planned. Galyn Susman, who had been at the studio since the original Toy Story was released in 1995, was also part of the cuts.
There was a total of 75 jobs that were made redundant on May 23, Reuters first reported. It’s worth noting that cuts at the animation studio are rare and the last time it happened was in 2013 when The Good Dinosaur was delayed. At the time, 5% of Pixar’s 1,200 workforce was cut, including director Bob Peterson.

Disney and Pixar have announced that their latest animated feature Lightyear will be available for streaming on Disney+ starting August 3rd.
“‘Lightyear’ looks amazing on the big screen, of course, but we are so excited to bring it to Disney+,” said the film’s director Angus MacLane in a statement. “We devoted years of our lives to this film and we are so proud of it. We want to share it with as many people as possible. Disney+ not only gives more fans an opportunity to see ‘Lightyear,’ it gives us all the means to see it again and again.”
A sci-fi action adventure and the definitive origin story of Buzz Lightyear, the hero who inspired the Toy Story toy, Lightyear follows the legendary Space Ranger (The Gray Man‘s Chris Evans) after he’s marooned on a hostile planet 4.2 million light-years from Earth alongside his commander and their crew.

Pixar’s “Lightyear” (which is now playing exclusively in theaters) serves as the big screen sci-fi adventure that eventually led to the toy that Andy was gifted at the start of the first “Toy Story”. It expands the “Toy Story” universe in surprising and meaningful ways. And introduces us to an all-time Pixar sidekick in the form of his robotic cat pal Sox.
In “Lightyear,” Buzz (now voiced by Chris Evans) is an intrepid Space Ranger who, driven by ego and a truly righteous sense of self, accidentally maroons his fellow space travelers on a harsh world full of treacherous vines and creepy bug creatures. Determined to figure out a way off the planet, he attempts to crack lightspeed travel and finds himself in a strange loop – each time he makes a test flight, he returns to the planet a few minutes later but several years have passed. Why is Chris Evans Buzz Lightyear when Tim Allen has long voiced the character audiences know and love? There’s a very simple answer: they aren’t technically voicing the same character.
Writer-director Angus MacLane is categorizing Pixar’s 26th film, “Lightyear,” as a “sidequel” to the “Toy Story” franchise. In an interview with Yahoo, McLane discussed the decision to cast Evans in the role, explaining that the upcoming film’s premise — which isn’t about the Buzz Lightyear toy from the “Toy Story” films, but the movie that toy is based on — has begun to confuse audiences, and that the inclusion of Tim Allen as the “original” Buzz Lightyear would just “add to the confusion.”
“Toy Story’s” beloved space ranger action figure was voiced by Tim Allen in the first four installments, but Allen was not approached for this “sidequel.” MacLane explains that Buzz the action figure, voiced by Allen,...

Disney supported Lightyear’s inclusion of two lesbian characters but was hesitant about featuring a kiss between them, according to one of the film’s producers.
In an interview with Mercury News, Galyn Susman, a producer for the Toy Story and Buzz Lightyear origin tale, briefly touched on the controversy around Pixar’s first animated feature film same-gender kiss. In March, it was revealed that the film would be restoring a kiss scene that had previously been cut.
When asked about the studio’s response to including what is described as a “quick lesbian kiss” between the Aduba-voiced character Alisha Hawthorne and her fellow Black lesbian wife, the producer revealed that Disney had always supported the couple being gay. And it was because their onscreen relationship helped further one of the film’s storylines reflecting on Buzz’s loneliness in life. The kiss,...

If you watched the Toy Story franchise growing up, you know what your favorite astronaut, Buzz Lightyear, sounds like when he says his signature catchphrases. Part of what makes Toy Story so timeless is the devotion Disney and Pixar have given to its iconic characters for the past 27 years. However, in "Lightyear," the new prequel, Buzz won't sound exactly the same. Instead of the iconic voice of Tim Allen, Chris Evans will voice the beloved space cadet, a decision that sent some fans spiraling to infinity and beyond. So, why isn't Tim Allen in "Lightyear"?
As most fans know, Buzz Lightyear is voiced by Allen throughout all four movies of the franchise. In a lot of ways, Allen does feel like the only Buzz Lightyear because his voice is the only one kids and adults hear while watching any of the "Toy Story" films. When the news broke in October,...

Disney-Pixar’s “Lightyear” sees Chris Evans voicing a new version of one of the company’s most famous characters, Buzz Lightyear. First introduced in 1995’s “Toy Story,” Buzz was made famous thanks to Tim Allen’s voice performance across the franchise’s four films, and Evans admitted that taking on the title role was a daunting prospect
“The first time you have to do that iconic line, ‘To Infinity and Beyond…,’ you kind of just do a shameless Tim Allen impression. It’s intimidating,” Evans told Variety senior entertainment reporter Angelique Jackson at the “Lightyear” premiere. “But Angus [MacLane, the film’s director] and everyone at Pixar was so collaborative, and you kind of let them guide you. Eventually you feel comfortable enough to make your own tracks in the snow and find your own interpretation, while still using Tim Allen as the blueprint.”

After four Toy Story films, audiences will meet a new version of Buzz Lightyear in Pixar’s latest film, Lightyear, which tells the story of the man who inspired the iconic action figure voiced by Tim Allen. In this story, Buzz is a space ranger embarking on an intergalactic adventure, leading a team of recruits in a fight against invaders.

The toy had electronic parts, flashing lights, and far more catchphrases than the cowboy, which had previously been Andy’s favorite toy. And in a movie where toys come to life, Buzz Lightyear didn’t realize he was a toy at all, believing he was a real Space Ranger, stuck on a strange new planet. For Toy Story fans, this is a tale that’s been familiar for two decades—but what fans have never gotten to experience is Andy’s favorite movie, the film that inspired the toy.
But what if they could see that film? What if Buzz Lightyear, rather than being a toy, truly was a Space Ranger? What would that story be like? Those questions inspired the team at Pixar to launch into a new adventure: creating a space opera that...

Pixar's "Lightyear" is one of the most highly anticipated movies of 2022, and its latest trailer, released April 21, has only intensified our excitement. A spin-off of the Toy Story franchise, the Chris Evans-led animated movie will lay out the origin story of the titular Buzz Lightyear, the human space ranger who inspired the valorous action figure. It remains to be seen who will be the lead antagonist Buzz combats as we delve into his standalone story. While the teaser unveiled some of the broad plot points, it steered clear of explicitly revealing the main villain of "Lightyear." However, based on the past iterations of Buzz Lightyear, coupled with producer Galyn Susman's recent comments on the movie, we have an idea of who Buzz will be going up against in the movie: Emperor Zurg.
Who Is Emperor Zurg in the Toy Story Franchise?
Emperor Zurg, known as Zurg, has long been Buzz's archenemy.

Pixar got its start more than 25 years ago with the groundbreaking "Toy Story," the first fully 3D computer-animated movie to ever be released in theaters. That film would go on to fuel the studio's biggest franchise for years to come, with not one but three incredibly successful sequels to follow over the years. But it already felt, in some ways, like "Toy Story 4" was pushing Pixar's luck, since "Toy Story 3" managed to feel like such a satisfying conclusion to the whole thing. Rather than merely continue along those same lines, Disney and Pixar have opted to...

Pixar’s return to movie theaters with “Lightyear” (June 17) is propelled by nostalgia for sci-fi action-adventure films. For director Angus MacLane, it was his love of the genre and fascination with fearless Space Ranger Buzz Lightyear that led him to make his animated spin-off a trippy movie-within-a-movie. MacLane told IndieWire he pictured “Lightyear” as the blockbuster that would’ve charged the imagination of “Toy Story” kid Andy “the way ‘Star Wars’ got me excited.”
That means Andy watched a Pixar movie in 1995 that was actually made in the 2020s, which is perfect, considering the time-bending, Rip Van Winkle-like premise: After Buzz (voiced by Chris Evans) inadvertently strands his Star Command crew on an uncharted planet, he keeps traveling through time warps after a series of unsuccessful test runs to see if the rocket fuel will get them back to Earth. Each time he returns to the planet, though, the crew...

Chris Evans is once again a man out of his time. Only this time, it’s as the legendary space ranger Buzz Lightyear.
In the newest trailer for Disney and Pixar’s upcoming film, we get a little bit deeper into what the story of “Lightyear” will be. Buzz partners with a woman named Alisha Hawthorne (Uzo Aduba), and they banter like siblings. They even share Buzz’s iconic catchphrase as a call and response: “To infinity, and beyond.”
It seems she runs the show, and he’s off on a new mission.
“I’m gonna grant you four minutes to be off planet, but then you come right back to us,” she cautions.
But, as it turns out, Buzz’s mission actually sends him 62 years, seven months, and five days into the future. When he returns, he meets Hawthorne’s granddaughter, voiced by Keke Palmer, and his new team...

Appearing at the D23 expo in Anaheim today, Disney Chief Creative Officer John Lasseter spoke with CNBC and finally revealed the storyline for Pixar's highly anticipated fourth film in the "Toy Story" series.
"It's a love story with Woody and - and this is news - Bo Peep... At Pixar and at Disney, we only make sequels if we come up with a story that's as good or better than the original. That's our rule. We don't do things just to print money."
Though Bo Peep was introduced as Woody's love interest in the original "Toy Story," she was absent from the third film and it was suggested she was either donated or sold off. How they plan to bring her back into the narrative is unknown at this time, as is whether Annie Potts will reprise her voice role as the character.

Despite brilliantly ending one of cinema’s most beloved series with Toy Story 3 back in 2010, Pixar Animation Studios (which is now owned by Disney) has revealed plans to return audiences to the world of the studio’s signature character with Toy Story 4.

The greatest animated franchise of all time is getting another sequel. Everyone said Toy Story 3 would be the end of Woody and Buzz, but alas, here we are, announcing Toy Story 4. The company's chairman and CEO Bob Iger revealed that John Lasseter, who directed the original, will helm the upcoming film.
Toy Story 4 will be written by Rashida Jones and Will McCormack, who previously penned and starred in Celeste and Jesse Forever. They're working from a story idea by Lasseter, Andrew Stanton, Pete Docter, and Lee Unkrich! Pixar's Galyn Susman will produce.
Though it hasn't been confirmed yet, our assumption is that the whole gang, from Tom Hanks to Don Rickles to Joan Cusack will return to voice these beloved characters.
Toy Story 3 was a perfect ending to a beloved franchise. Yes, Disney is squeezing this one for more profit, but it's hard to stay mad about news like this.

Pixar Animation Studios and Walt Disney Pictures have set a June 16th 2017 release date for a fourth film in the "Toy Story" franchise. Walt Disney Co. chief Bob Iger made the announcement to Wall Street analysts as he discussed the company's fourth quarter and fiscal year results on Thursday.
Pixar Cco and original "Toy Story" director John Lasseter is set to return to the helm, while Tom Hanks and Tim Allen will reprise their roles as Woody and Buzz Lightyear. Most surprising (and welcome) is that "Celeste and Jesse Forever" scribes Rashida Jones and Will McCormack are onboard as writers on the project.
Also onboard is Galyn Susman ("Toy Story of Terror," "Toy Story that Time Forgot") as producer in a film that is being described as more of a love story than the previous outings. In an official statement, Lasseter says:
"We love these characters so much; they are like family to us.

It's full circle for John Lasseter, as Disney/Pixar has announced that he's returning to the director's chair for Toy Story 4. Lasseter directed the first Toy Story and co-directed Toy Story 2. And whilst Toy Story 4 had been rumoured for some time, it's now been officially confirmed.
The official announcement confirms that the new film "opens a new chapter in the lives of Woody, Buzz Lightyear and the Toy Story gang". The new story has come from John Lasseter, Andrew Stanton, Pete Docter and Lee Unkrich, described not incorrectly as 'the storytellers who have been the driving force behind all three Toy Story films'.
It's a bold move and a tall order to pick the story up for the pretty much perfect ending to Toy Story 3. Lasster did say that...

Pixar has announced that Toy Story 4 is a go and that John Lasseter will be back to direct the CG animated sequel. Lasseter co-created Toy Story and directed the first two films and has served as the chief creative officer of both Pixar and Walt Disney Animation Studios for the past 8 years.
I think we all knew that we would see a Toy Story 4 happen. The studio has been keeping the franchise fresh and alive with the television specials that they've been releasing. I truly love how they ended Toy Story 3, and I didn't really need to see another film after that. But Pixar must have cracked a great story that they are passionate about telling. There are no story details at this time, but I'm sure that all the usual suspects will return, along with a few new characters. The movie will be released sometime in 2017, and I'm...

Updated: John Lasseter will direct Toy Story 4 and it will be released on June 16, 2017, Disney boss Bob Iger just said in the company’s earnings call with analysts. This is a bit of a shocker as the principals behind the three Disney/Pixar hits have often said there were no plans for a fourth pic in the franchise after Toy Story 3 came out in 2010 and grossed $1.063B worldwide, making it the top-grossing animated film of all time until Frozen overtook it earlier this year.
Lasseter, now chief creative office of Walt Disney and Pixar Animation Studios, directed the first two pics before turning over the threequel to Lee Unkrich.
(Update: Disney says the story came from Lasseter, Unkrich, Andrew Stanton and Pete Docter, the Pixar veterans behind the other pics. Rashida Jones and Will McCormack, the team who penned the indie hit Celeste And Jesse Forever, have joined the project as writers.

John Lasseter will return to direct Pixar's “Toy Story 4,” which Disney will release on June 16, 2017. Disney's Bob Iger announced the news Thursday during a conference call with financial analysts to discuss earnings. Plot details for “Toy Story 4” remain unknown, but Lasseter concocted the new story with his fellow Pixar brain trust Andrew Stanton, Pete Docter and Lee Unkrich — the storytellers who have been the driving force behind all three “Toy Story” films. Writing team Rashida Jones and Will McCormack (“Celeste and Jesse Forever”) have also joined “Toy Story 4,” which will be produced by Pixar veteran Galyn Susman (ABC's “Toy Story.

Disney CEO Bob Iger has just announced Pixar will be moving forward with Toy Story 4 with John Lasseter returning to direct the sequel for a June 16, 2017 release. With that June 16 date it means it will hit theaters one week after How to Train Your Dragon 3 and two weeks before Despicable Me 3 on June 30. Warner Bros.' DC Comics feature, Wonder Woman, also arrives that month, dated for June 23. The announcement came during Disney's earnings call with Iger saying Toy Story 3 proved "these characters are just as relevant -- and beloved -- as ever before." An official press release was sent out following the call quoting Lasseter saying, "We love these characters so much; they are like family to us. We don't want to do anything with them unless it lives up to or surpasses what's gone before. Toy Story 3 ended Woody and Buzz's story with Andy so perfectly that for a long time,...
