The events following the Kmt army's move to Taiwan in 1949, and the subsequent political division between China and the eventually under martial law Taiwan is one of the most dramatic periods in the history of the area, particularly because, just like the split of two Koreas, prevented millions from being able to see their loved ones. Using the format of a family drama epic that lasts for four decades, Wang Tung presents the events that shaped this period, through the story of two brothers. It is also worth noting that the film signaled a period, after the ending to the martial law in the country in 1987, when filmmakers could finally talk about this rather troubled period.

Derek Yee’s I Am Somebody will open this year’s Shanghai International Film Festival (Siff, June 13-21), while China-Russian co-production Ballet In The Flames Of War will close the event.
Directed by China’s Yachun Dong and Russia’s Nikita Mikhalkov, Ballet In The Flames Of War is a romance set during the Second World War and opened the Chinese Film Festival in Mosow last month.
Meanwhile, Mikhalkov’s Sunstroke is one of nine films selected for the Golden Goblet Awards, along with Daniel Barnz’s Cake and Taiwanese director Tung Wang’s Where The Wind Settles (see list below). Russian director Andrey Zvyagintsev (Leviathan) heads the jury for the awards.
Films nominated for the Asian New Talent Award include Japanese director Momoko Ando’s 0.5mm, Iranian filmmaker Hooman Seyedi’s 13 and Labour Of Love from India’s Aditya Vikram Sengupta.

French-Spanish period costumer "Farewell My Queen," directed by Benoit Jacquot, will open this year's Berlinale, which runs from February 9 to 19. The "upstairs downstairs" drama adapted from Chantal Thomas's novel stars Diane Kruger as Marie Antoinette and Lea Seydoux and Virginie Ledoyen as servants in Versailles at the start of the French Revolution. The film will compete for Berlin's Golden Bear. The festival is awarding Meryl Streep an honorary Golden Bear this year. Following up the initial announcement of titles, the 62nd Berlin International Film Festival revealed it will open with the period drama Les Adieux à la reine (Farewell My Queen) today. From director Benoît Jacquot, the drama stars Inglourious Basterds lead Diane Kruger, as well as Léa Seydoux who broke-out in Midnight in Paris and Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol this year. Based on, Chantal Thomas’ novel we have the first stills of the film (from Lumiere via The Playlist) that follows the “first few days of the French Revolution from the perspective of the servants at Versailles.”
Kruger, who plays Marie Antoinette here, has only appeared in one big film following her post-Basterds role with Unknown, but I look forward to her future work, especially with this film.
