When you talk to Mathew Weiner—as I did at Toronto a year ago when he premiered his ill-fated movie directing debut, "Are You Here," an amiable buddy comedy starring Owen Wilson and Zach Galifianakis, and again just before the final season of "Mad Men" ended, at L'Ermitage Hotel—you realize the USC film school grad loves movies. That's where he's coming from, in his references and inspirations. (His question "what's the one movie and song that always makes you cry?" launches a long detour on "Stella Dallas" and "Somewhere Over the Rainbow.") Read More: "Mad Men' Creator Matt Weiner Says Good-Bye (Exclusive Video) Weiner dreamed up "Mad Men" 14 years ago--"it's been a third of my life," he told me. He shelved a film script about captains of industry who pulled themselves up from poverty, then wrote the "Mad Men" pilot, which persuaded David Chase to hire him...

While most fans seem to have liked the way that Mad Men wrapped up its seven season run, others were frustrated that some outstanding plot points and characters weren't given closure.
Interesting, show creator Mathew Weiner and the rest of the writers may share some of those frustrations. Reporting from a Writer's Guild Foundation Q&A panel for Mad Men, EW's Anthony Breznican tweeted a picture of Weiner's wish list of topics to address before the finale.

'Still fixated on fat Betty Draper, almost 12 hours later,' one viewer writes of polarizing character's transformation.

After sitting out last week's "Mad Men" season-five premiere, Betty Draper (January Jones) returned on Sunday night looking, well, a bit different. And that new look has been dominating the water-cooler conversation on Monday morning (April 2).
The normally svelte and sexy Jones was pregnant with her now-six-month-old son, Xander, during filming and, rather than write her pregnancy into the show's story line, series creator Mathew Weiner and the show's writers decided to saddle Betty with an unexpected plot twist: They gave her character a significant weight gain and a major potential health crisis to help explain it.
To some, the cancer scare subplot immediately made Betty, who is known for her chilly demeanor and questionable mothering skills, more relatable. "Did you watch Betty...

Every season of Mad Men has its defining Wtf moment. Take Betty's pellet-gun prowess in season one, or Freddy Rumsen's pants-peeing in season two, or last season's Great Lawnmower Foot Severing of 1963. The series wouldn't be the same without these breathtaking, pitch-black detours into Mathew Weiner's id (for better or worse), and the current season of the series wouldn't be the same without its frequent journeys to that well for dramatic reckoning, comic relief and/or the sheer exhilaration of point-blank, old-fashioned shock. And if this year we've indeed seen both the best and the worst of what Mad Men has to offer, then it only fits that we have finally seen its weirdest. But was it worth it?...
