Are Britney Spears and her fellow “X Factor” judge L.A. Reid about to make beautiful music together? According to The Hollywood Reporter, Spears’ contract with RCA will be up after one more album and among those courting the pop princess is Reid, who is head of Sony's Epic Records. Also in the picture is Barry Weiss, who now heads Island Def Jam. Britney Spears's next record contract will reportedly see a bidding war between several labels. The singer's current deal with Jive Records (now RCA) only has one album left, and will soon be taking offers from interested parties. Her X Factor USA colleague La Reid is said to be looking to sign her to his Epic Records label at Sony, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Former Jive head Barry Weiss, who has worked with Spears in the past, is also interested in reuniting with her at Island Def Jam Motown and Universal Republic, who also have Justin Bieber, Kanye West and Mariah Carey among others. Reid is said to have become good friends with Spears since she joined (more)...

Today Universal Music Group has announced the acquisition of three-time Grammy Award-winner, Ne-Yo and his label imprint, Compound Entertainment, to Motown Record's roster of talent. The former Def Jam recording artist will also join the label as their new Senior Vice President of A&R.
In between recording his debut as-yet-untitled Motown opus the "Red Tails" star will serve as a producer and mentor to the label's artists, as well as discovering and signing new talent to the label.
"I'm a combination of excited, honored and terrified all at once!" he said in a statement. "Excited about a new beginning here at Motown, honored that I've been given such a prestigious title and trusted with such responsibility, terrified because I know that playing this role, in the fashion of one of my idols and career role models Mr. Smokey Robinson, these are big shoes to fill...but trust, I can handle it.

The Grammy Award-winning singer (and co-star of the George Lucas-produced "Red Tails") has moved from Def Jam to Motown Records, according to a statement sent to MTV News on Wednesday (January 25). Not only that, Ne-Yo will also take over as the label's senior vice president of A&R.

"Blitz," the British crime thriller from director Elliott Lester and the unstoppable force of nature that is Jason Statham, lands on DVD and Blu-Ray in the United States today. Based on a novel of the same name from Ken Bruen, "Blitz" follows the story of a disgruntled south east London detective sergeant (Statham) who finds himself on a collision course with Barry Weiss, a dark and disturbed cop killer operating under the self-dubbed moniker "Blitz."
Check out an exclusive clip from "Blitz" in the video below, and keep on reading for five reasons you should check out the film.

Statham plays Brant, an hard-drinking and hard-hitting cop who always gets what he wants — and when he doesn't, there's hell to pay. A combined force of nature, fists and other assorted blunt instruments, Brant ranks high in Statham very own hall of badass fame, an intensely watchable (if not...

While I’m not a viewer who believes in lowering their standards for a film simply because it might not be heavy on visual metaphors or subtext, I do go into a movie like Blitz with certain expectations. Seeing as this is an action picture whose main concerns are foot chases and people getting shot, some nice thrills, funny moments, and well-choreographed scenes are basically what I want. And, to a certain extent, Blitz delivers those things.
I repeat: to a certain extent.
While I generally found myself willing to go along with what director Elliot Lester and screenwriter Nathan Parker had concocted, there was often the sense that a much more entertaining and smarter version of this same story was lurking right under the surface. The design of it is completely baffling; side characters will come and go without reason, plot elements that are introduced in one scene aren...

Inspired by Michael Fassbender’s performance in X-Men: First Class, James wonders what an entire film devoted to Magneto’s 60s exploits would have looked like...

X-Men: First Class is, in my very humble opinion, first class. I loved Matthew Vaughn's Marvel mutant movie. In fact, I'd go so far as to state that it's one of my favourite cinematic comic book adaptations and easily the best X-Men motion picture yet.
Post-screening, I emerged from the cinema totally exhilarated and uplifted. I felt compelled to shout "mutant and proud!" at the midnight moon, pull off my shoes and use my feet to swing from lamp post to lamp post all the way across town.
Having removed my socks, I realised that I wasn't Hank "Beast" McCoy and that amateur streetlight acrobatics after dark was a dumb idea that would only lead to an intensive care unit.

In this week’s column, James celebrates the weirdest, baddest screen villains of recent years, including the unhinged murderer from Brit thriller, Blitz…
Warning: this article contains mild spoilers for Blitz, if you've not yet seen the film.
When you enter any Dungeons & Dragons roleplaying game, you're asked to choose a moral alignment. After you've decided your race (such as dwarf, human or half-elf) and your type (Ranger, Paladin, Cleric, etc.), you've got to consider your ethical standpoint and your entire moral credo.
Having thought about it for a few seconds (I just want to get to the bit where I can pick the colour of my character's cloak and play the actual game), I guess I come into the one of the ‘good' or ‘neutral' types, depending on the day and my mood. It's hard to place yourself in one of nine vague categories, but I'll join the ‘chaotic...

With British cop thriller Blitz out in cinemas today, we caught up with Aidan Gillen to talk about the film, and fighting Jason Statham...
An actor who’s often specialised in bringing flawed, unusual characters to the screen, including mayor Thomas Carcetti in The Wire and Stuart in Queer As Folk, Aidan Gillen may have found his most strange and unsettling role yet in the form of Blitz’s crazed murderer, Barry Weiss. A swaggering outsider with an affection for bright green shades and outlandish violence, Weiss is quite possibly the most memorable antagonist to appear on the big screen this year.
With Blitz out in UK cinemas today, we just had to find out how Gillen prepared for the role, what it was like to fight Jason Statham, and where he got that extraordinary pair of shades.
Did you base the character on anyone in particular? Weiss reminded me of Sid Vicious.

Music mogul L.A. Reid has handed over the reigns of his record label to Britney Spears' boss Barry Weiss after signing up to be a star judge on Simon Cowell's "The X Factor". The record executive and producer, who gave Usher and Justin Bieber their big breaks, is taking a seat on "The X Factor (Us)", and he has quit his job as chairman and CEO of Island Def Jam and Universal Motown to concentrate on his new TV mentor role.
Replacing him will be Weiss, who joins the label after several years in charge of Jive, the label in charge of Spears, Justin Timberlake, Jamie Foxx, Kelly Clarkson and Kings of Leon. Lucian Grange, chairman of the Universal Music Group, says, "Throughout his career, Barry achieved that rare and delicate balance between managing artistic needs and the realities of the business."

Rochester, NY - Ever wonder why schools today stink compared to decades ago? Every think tank moron has their dubious reasonings that appeases their corporate masters. But the truth is extraordinarily simple: Schools dumped their education films.
Do you remember those days when the gym teacher had to pad out health class by wheeling in the 16mm projector from the Av department? They’d thread up classic tales about your body, narcotics, driving safety and manners. Things which kids nowadays can’t seem to handle.
When the Vcr arrived in schools, the 16mm projector was quickly dumped as teaching tool.
Where did these classic films go? Many arrived at the city dump. However a few lucky tens of thousands found themselves on the racks of the Av Geeks Archive. This repository of cinematic education is overseen by Skip Elsheimer. He started collecting the films after I moved out of the infamous PineHaus.

According to Archuleta, “Jive has been changing as a company” — both Sony Music president Barry Weiss and Jeff Fenster, Archuleta’s A&R representative, have left Jive recently. Additionally, notes Archuleta, he’s also changing as an artist,...

Ciara has found a way to make her sexy single "Ride" even hotter: a collaboration with Andre 3000, one of the most sought-after MCs in the game.
CiCi has recruited the Outkast rapper for a remix of "Ride," which also features fellow ATLien Ludacris. But the diva didn't land the collaboration alone; she brought in some music-industry bigwigs to help her out.
"My team actually kind of helped put that together. My A&R [rep] Mark [Pitts] and [RCA/Jive Label Group Chairman and CEO] Barry Weiss, they kinda worked it out," Ciara told MTV News about getting the Mc, who is known for being selective when it comes to doling out features. "It was just a really cool thing for Dre to respond back and say he wanted to get on the record.

This fall is promising a bumper crop of "American Idol" album action. On Tuesday, the day that it was announced that runner-up Adam Lambert had scored a deal with RCA Records, fourth-place finisher Allison Iraheta also lined up a debut-album release for the fall on Jive Records, the same label that will be issuing winner Kris Allen's major-label bow.
The season's highest-placing female contestant, and the youngest singer ever to make the top 12 (she was 16 when she began her run), 17-year-old Iraheta distinguished herself on the show with a husky, powerful singing style that belied her youth. From her defining cover of Bonnie Raitt's "I Can't Make You Love Me" to her gut-busting take on Janis Joplin's "Cry Baby," the flame-haired singer showed a steely confidence on the show.

Sony Pictures Imageworks has been awarded a substantial amount of work on Roland Emmerich's "2012," SPI president Tim Sarnoff said Tuesday at Siggraph.
Sony's apocalyptic thriller recently started production in Vancouver and will include a large number of visual effects. A July 10 release is planned. The production has a contingency plan in case of an actors walkout or strike.
Sarnoff also said that SPI and Sony Pictures Animation's Ipax education program is launching an online mentoring program through a partnership with Animation Mentor.
The program, beginning in the winter, will pair students from 18 Ipax member schools worldwide with leading SPI and Spa artists. The program will use Animator Mentor's model and interactive online technology.
"The idea is to improve collaboration -- not school-to-school or business-to-business but one on one," Sarnoff said.
SPI's Barry Weiss, senior vp animation and artistic development, chairs the Ipax initiative, which was formed in 2004 to connect faculty from academic institutions with industry professionals.
