Regional Western Australia has doubled for the Western Front over the past couple of months in Jordon Prince-Wright’s Before Dawn, which has now wrapped.
Inspired by the real-life diary entries of local ANZACs, the feature film details the untold story of some of Australia’s greatest military victories.
The all-Australian cast includes Levi Miller, Stephen Peacocke, Travis Jeffery, Ed Oxenbould, Tim Franklin, and Myles Pollard.
Jarrad Russell makes his feature writing debut with the script, with Prince-Wright producing through his company Prince-Wright Productions.
There are also contributions from composer Sean Tinnion (The Last Horns of Africa) and cinematographer Daniel Quinn.
Production took place entirely in regional Wa, with the majority of filming occurring on 83 acres of land outside of Esperance, where a large-scale set was built to replicate the trenches and battlefields of Flanders, Belgium.

‘McLeod’s Daughters’ (Photo credit: Millennium Pictures).
Posie Graeme-Evans, co-creator of the Nine Network drama McLeod’s Daughters, is working on a feature film spin-off with producer Sue Clothier and screenwriter Emma Jensen.
Screen Tasmania is funding the early development of McLeods of Drovers Run, scripted by Jensen and produced by Graeme-Evans and Clothier.
Based on an origin story by Graeme-Evans, the plot sees tragic, unfinished business that begins in 1850s Scotland at the ancestral home of the McLeods return to haunt the present day family.
The logline reads: “In the end, family is all we have when the past will not die. That’s a good thing. Right?”
Graeme-Evans is convinced there is still a huge appetite for the McLeod’s franchise. Currently screening on Stan, the series won the Meaa’s The Great Australian Binge vote for Australia’s most favourite show.

Outnumbered. Outgunned. Never Out of Courage.
It seems like it’s been awhile since we’ve seen a movie set during the Vietnam war, but we’ve got one coming called Danger Close: The Battle of Long Tan and it tells a pretty crazy story.
The film tells the harrowing true story of 108 young and inexperienced Australian and New Zealand soldiers who are forced to fight to survive against 2,500 North Vietnamese and Viet Cong soldiers who are attacking them.
This is the kind of intense survival war story that I love to hear about and it looks like it going to make for a solid film. The movie my not have any big name actors in it, but it looks good and I’ll watch it! Here’s the synopsis:

"We don't know who's out there!" The first trailer has debuted for an Australian coming-of-age drama titled Jasper Jones, adapted from Craig Silvey’s bestselling Australian novel of the same name. The film stars Levi Miller as a 14-year-old boy living in a small town, who is awoken by a local man named Jasper Jones, played by Aaron L. McGrath. Jasper leads him deep into the forest and shows him something that will change his life forever, setting them both on a dangerous journey to solve a mystery that will consume the entire community. This kind of sounds a bit like Stand by Me by way of Australia, and the trailer has a bit of that feeling. This also stars Hugo Weaving, Toni Collette, Angourie Rice, Matt Nable, Dan Wyllie, and Myles Pollard. Not sure when this film will show up in the Us, but it actually looks pretty damn good.

Though it doesn’t unseat Endless Summer as the king of beautiful surfing cinematography, Ben Nott and Morgan O’Neill’s Drift has some beauty of its own matched up with a moderately strong story about the start of the 1970s surfing boom and two brothers who fought against the odds to create a brand for surfers and by surfers. The story is simple and straightforward with solid performances by Myles Pollard, Xavier Samuel, and Sam Worthington that help to keep the film moving even as it starts to waver at parts. The end result is a film that’s entertaining if not a little predictable, and which makes you wish you lived on a coast with a beach year-round.

Few Australian films secure a wide cinema release in Italy so the local distributor had a lot riding on Drift which went out on 165 screens last weekend.
Alas, the Australian 1970s-set surfing drama starring Myles Pollard, Xavier Samuel and Sam Worthington was a near total wipe-out.
The film co-directed by Ben Nott and Morgan O.Neill grossed $US98,587 in three days for a scrawny per-screen average of $597, according to Box Office Mojo, which tracks 74% of the total box-office.
Admittedly the Italian summer season typically means weak business at cinemas. The Wolverine was the top title in its third weekend, earning $550,000.
The Italian edition of Vogue gave the film a warm reception, hailing it as an enthralling story that "mixes passion, love and adventure, without falling into nostalgia,. filled with water scenes that are . charming and breathless..

Sam Worthington may be a big star in Hollywood action-adventures but Drift, the Australian surfing- set drama in which he co-stars with Myles Pollard and Xavier Samuel, has had a limited release in the Us.
Wrekin Hill Entertainment, which bought North American rights last September, launched the film at 11 cinemas on August 2, a month after the title debuted on Video-on-Demand platforms.
The Us critics gave the film featuring Pollard and Samuel as brothers who build a surfboard/surfwear business in the 1970s, with Worthington as their hippie photographer mate, a cool reception.
As of today, the distributor had not reported any figures to Rentrak, Box Office Mojo, The Numbers or other web sites which track the Us box-office.
Australian films released in Us cinemas and on VoD platforms have not fared well this year. Mental earned just $18,000 in ticket sales and 100 Bloody Acres made $6,000, according to Box Office Mojo.

As far as the sports genre is concerned, those featuring surfing are about as niche as you go. Only 12 films have ever grossed more than $1 million at the domestic box office let alone found any measure of breakout success. Those that did find some semblance of an audience, like Soul Surfer and Point Break, had the added aid of family appeal and incorporating a heist element respectively, but for the most part they land with a whisper – not anything like the thundering, mammoth waves these daredevils tackle.
But in spite of this subgenre’s lack of mainstream appeal there is one thing they – and Australian import Drift – prove, and that is surfing looks damn cool, especially when presented so slickly and in such a high energy fashion. So it’s a shame in the case of this period drama (which transports us back to the early years of the sport...

Origin stories, even non-fiction ones, often make good movies, showing us "How the West was Won" or how demonic possession entered pop culture, pre-"Exorcist" and Amityville ("The Conjuring").
"Drift" is about the birth of the Australian surfing scene and the industry it spawned. It's a fictional goulash of invented characters, arch situations and a predictable journey from enthusiastic hobby to business, with a detour into the drug trade in between.
But it's a lovely thing to look at and an entertaining ride through myth, a well-shot and acted film that stays just ahead of the curl and rarely wipes out.
A prologue introduces us to the Kelly brothers as their mom (Robyn Malcolm) sneaks them out of their abusive Sydney household and sets out for a new life without their brute of a father. The boys convince her to stop in remote Seacliff, in Western Australia. That's where they can surf,...

Not so much drifting as veering between storylines, Ben Nott and Morgan O'Neill's Drift often feels like a film with narrative Add. With likable leads (Xavier Samuel and Myles Pollard as brothers Jimmy and Andy Kelly, plus Sam Worthington supporting as a surf-hippie) and gorgeous scenery, it wouldn't have been difficult to make a charmer about a group of guys building a surfboard manufacturing business. Unfortunately, that's the film Drift might have been, not the film it is. The Kelly brothers are surf enthusiasts in 1970s Australia, when the sport hadn't yet caught on. Jimmy could go pro, while Andy is the thinker who wants to build a business. But the narrative keeps fracturing: Is Drift a sports film about winning the big competition? A gangster movie about smu...

I'm always on the lookout for a good surfing film, and we've got a new trailer for Sam Worthington's new film, Drift. The story is set in Australia in the '70s, and follows two brothers who are working towards surfing glory, but slip into a life of crime when they try to get their family out of debt. It looks like it could be good flick.
The movie was directed by Morgan O’Neill and Ben Nott and also stars Myles Pollard, Xavier Samuel, Lesley-Ann Brandt, Robyn Malcolm, Steve Bastoni, and Aaron Glenane.
Australia, 1970s. The Kelly brothers, Andy and Jimmy, have one great passion: riding big waves. As kids, their mother escaped from Sydney to Margaret River, a sleepy coastal town with some of the world’s most challenging and dangerous waves. For the next 12 years, the boys perfected their surfing skills, always searching for the perfect ride.

"Go for it man, get into it. That's the whole point, right?" Lionsgate & Wrekin Hill has debuted another new trailer for the Australian film Drift, starring Myles Pollard, Xavier Samuel and Sam Worthington as surfing legends from the 1970s. We ran a much longer original trailer back in December, but this one is a tighter cut focusing on the drug drama that could "end it all." It looks a bit better than Chasing Mavericks, and I am curious to check it out sometime, but not before I watch Soul Surfer or Lords of Dogtown or the doc Riding Giants first. The trailer ends on a fairly odd note, but if you dig surfing or Australia give it a look. Here's the brand new trailer for Morgan O'Neill & Ben Nott's Drift, in high def from Apple: In the 70s, two brothers Andy & Jimmy (Myles Pollard & Xavier Samuel) battle killer waves,...

We return with another edition of the Indie Spotlight, highlighting recent independent horror news sent our way. This week’s feature includes a trailer for The Cabining, details on All Hallows’ Eve, and much more:
The Cabining: “Todd and Bruce, a hapless screenwriting team, get one last shot at success thanks to Todd’s wealthy stepdad, Serge. If they pen a worthy horror script, Serge will fund the entire project. But there is one condition – the script must be complete in two weeks. With the deadline looming and no fresh ideas, Todd and Bruce head to Shangri-La, a serene artist’s retreat, with the hope that the peace and company of fellow artists will inspire greatness… or, failing greatness, at least enough for straight-to-dvd. Drift, from the appropriately named Morgan O’Neill and Ben Nott, treks back to the 1970s to explore some truly horrendous wigs and the wild west of surfing down under. This is where the sport evolved from hobby into an international industry. In the movie, Jimmy (Xavier Samuel) and Andy Kelly (Myles Pollard) struggle with family debt, the drug underground and societal backlash while opening up a surf shop out of their backyard. Sam Worthington is the biggest name here with perhaps the worst wig of all, playing a wandering surf photographer that becomes friends with the brothers. The trailer showcases a blend between a sports movie and an Aussie crime flick. Check it out for yourself: Drift is set for an Australian release in 2013. From the official synopsis: Australia, 1970s. The Kelly brothers, Andy and Jimmy, have one great passion: riding big waves. As kids, their mother escaped from Sydney to Margaret River, a...

"This is either the start of something cool, or the beginning of the end." Let's kick things off with an Aussie surfing drama to start out the week. Our friends at Twitch have found a trailer for another thrilling surfer movie about two brothers in the 1970s - called Drift. The film stars Myles Pollard and Xavier Samuel as the brothers, along with Sam Worthington along for the ride as "traveling bohemian surf photographer and filmmaker Jb". We've seen a number of surfer films recently, with Soul Surfer and Chasing Mavericks, but none of them can really live up to Point Break or Big Wednesday. The final shot in this is kind of epic. Here's the first trailer for Morgan O'Neill & Ben Nott's Drift, found on Twitch (via The Film Stage): In the 70s, two brothers Andy & Jimmy (Myles Pollard & Xavier Samuel) battle killer waves, conservative society and...

The world of surfing movies isn't really all that big, and "Point Break" aside, it isn't all that popular either. Remember this fall's "Chasing Mavericks"? Yeah, we nearly forgot it hit theaters and like most things involving Gerard Butler these days, audiences didn't seem to care about it at all. But can an unshaven and shaggy Sam Worthington change the tide? The "Avatar" star leads "Drift," an Aussie drama set on the waves that follows the Kelly brothers as they start a new life in a remote Australian coastal town. New in town, they come up against suspicious locals, killer waves and ruthless bikers as they struggle to kick-start a new business based on surfing, their greatest passion. Worthington isn't one of the leads, instead taking a supporting role as photographer/filmmaker Jb with Xavier Samuel and Myles Pollard playing Jimmy and Andy Kelly. All told, this spot looks solid,...

Here’s the first trailer for the surfing-based action-drama Drift starring Sam Worthington (Avatar), Xavier Samuel (Twilight Eclipse) and Myles Pollard (Wolverine).
While Hollywood surf movies are mostly lame and stereotypical, the Aussie-set story written and directed by Morgan O’Neill and co-directed by Ben Nott centers on the Kelly brothers who launch a backyard surf gear business but get caught up with a local drug dealer, threatening their family and their future.
Interestingly, Worthington was content to take a back seat, playing photographer Jb and let Samuel and Pollard playing the leading pair, Jimmy and Andy Kelly.
The Drift production started in summer 2011. Aside from the three lead actors, other notable cast members include Ann Brandt (Memphis Beat), Robyn Malcolm (Outrageous Fortune), Steve Bastoni (Underbelly) and Aaron Glenane (The Black Balloon).

The surfing world hasn't seen much love since Kathryn Bigelow's "Point Break," with most pics since then merely excuses to get good-looking actors in swimsuits. There does seem to be one film on the horizon that aims to be different though, the surfing-based action-drama "Drift" starring Sam Worthington, Xavier Samuel and Myles Pollard. A handful of images from the film have arrived, and while there may not be much skin, there is a lot of Worthington hair.
