Here’s some news that might even cheer up Oscar the Grouch: The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences has created two new Emmy categories for puppetry performance and puppet design/styling. Both awards will be handed out at this year’s second-ever Children’s & Family Emmys.
“Historically, puppetry performers would enter in the live action performer categories,” said NATAS CEO Adam Sharp, in announcing the new competition. “So, if you were the handler of a puppet, then you would go up against a lead actor or lead actress, and that created for some odd pairings. But managing a puppet is a very different kind of performance than a regular live action performance.”

Mark Hamill and Lupita Nyong’o were among the winners on Saturday night as the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) announced the winners of the 48th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards in the children’s and animation categories. The show represented the second of three Daytime Emmy ceremonies this year; the third will be live streamed on Sunday.
Nyong’o won the limited performance in a children’s program Emmy for playing the Storyteller, in Netflix’s “Bookmarks: Celebrating Black Voices. Hammil was named outstanding performer in a preschool animated program for Disney Channel’s “Elena of Avalor.”

Nyong’o won out in the category of Outstanding Limited Performance In a Children’s Program, with her turn as “The Storyteller” in Netflix’s Bookmarks: Celebrating Black Voices.
Hamill, meanwhile, dominated the category of Outstanding Performer in a Preschool Animated Program. He was recognized for his performance as Vuli in Disney Channel series Elena of Avalor.

The 2021 Daytime Emmys were presented on Friday night, June 25 … but not all of them. Awards have already gone out to the best in soap operas, game shows, talk shows, and a few other fields. But on June 28 the national television academy revealed their second round of nominations focusing on animated, nonfiction, children’s, and daytime fiction programming. The sitcom follows Noah, "an 11-year-old boy with social anxiety disorder, has to start middle school, he turns to a mutt named Dude, a sarcastic emotional support dog who might need Noah as much as Noah needs him." Netflix has ordered eight episodes of The Healing Powers of Dude, a family live action single camera comedy series from Erica Spates and Sam Littenberg-Weisberg. Richie Keen directs four episodes and executive produces.
Co-created by Spates and Littenberg-Weisberg based on personal experience with social anxiety disorder, The Healing Powers of Dude centers on Noah, an 11-year-old boy with social anxiety disorder.
