Swati Goel is the youngest of the 18 contestants on “Survivor 42,” at just 19 years old, but don’t let her age fool you. The Palo Alto resident is not only in the Army National Guard but is also enrolled at Harvard University, with “Survivor” now being added to her list of accomplishments. Swati believes that her basic combat training in particular will prepare her for “Survivor,” as she discusses in her CBS interview (watch below).
As Swati describes, her family is from India and there was a big focus on education as she was growing up. “A lot of people were surprised when the person who was in all the science and math clubs joined the Army National Guard,” she recalls, “but for me, it was really reflective of the values my family raised me with.” The 19-year-old is used to “starving and freezing” while enduring field exercises, which could come in handy on the island.

Sandra Diaz-Twine and Rob Mariano are two of the most intelligent “Survivor” winners of all time, which is why CBS invited them back to serve as mentors in Season 39. Dubbed “Survivor: Island of the Idols,” this latest installment is the eighth overall to film in the islands of Fiji. Wednesday’s 90-minute season premiere introduced 20 brand new castaways in a sort of “boot camp” atmosphere where they’re able to take advice from Queen Sandra and Boston Rob. How did it all play out, and who was the first player to get their torch snuffed by Jeff Probst?

With the dust now settled on “Survivor: Edge of Extinction,” it’s time to assess where Season 38 fits into the legacy of the long-running reality series. The Extinction Island twist was divisive from the start and those who didn’t care for it were enraged to see Chris Underwood, booted on Day 8, return a month later and win after having barely played the active game. Others liked how Extinction Island offered a second chance to players like Rick Devens, who certainly made the most of his return to the game. Vote in the poll below for where “Survivor: Edge of Extinction” places in your overall season rankings.

“Survivor” fans are mixed on whether Chris Underwood really deserved to win “Edge of Extinction” during the exciting May 15 finale. On the one hand, this 25-year-old salesman made one of the boldest game moves in reality TV history when he gave up his immunity necklace so that he could take on front-runner Rick Devens head-to-head in the fire-making challenge. On the other hand, he only played 13 of the 39 days since he spent most of his time on Extinction Island. According to our recent poll results, 65% of fans voted that Chris winning was “not fair,” compared to 35% who said he deserved to join the “Survivor” winners list because he “played an amazing game.”

‘Survivor: Edge of Extinction’: 4 reasons why Lauren O’Connell can and should be named sole survivor
As of now, 21-year-old Lauren O’Connell trails 33-year-old Rick Devens in our overall odds to win “Survivor: Edge of Extinction.” Rick was the 4th player voted out of the game, in part by Lauren herself, but returned from Extinction Island shortly after and has been struggling to find his footing within a solid alliance ever since. He leads our odds to win with 10/9 favorability, but is followed closely behind by Lauren with 27/10 odds of her own.
In all, we don’t know where exactly Lauren’s placement will fall–she actually leads none of our finale predictions! She ranks behind Gavin Whitson (21/10) in predictions to take 2nd place with 43/20 odds, fourth in predictions to take 3rd place with 19/2 odds, third in predictions to take 4th place with 5/1 odds, fifth in predictions to take 5th place with 13/1 odds and is at 100/1 odds to take 6th place.
So what is Lauren’s fate in the game?...

The “Survivor: Edge of Extinction” finale is upon us, and we officially have the largest number of players heading into the final episode who could still win the game in “Survivor” history: 16. There are five players left in the active game while 11 lie in wait in Extinction Island, ready to compete for a chance to get back in. So how can we predict who wins this season? Looking at the edit of each player gives us some clues about who producers are setting up as a satisfying winner to the audience. While those currently in the game have a better shot, through the sheer act of surviving so many Tribal Councils, even those who were sent to Extinction Island could have a viable path to victory.
Below is our final “winner’s edit” ranking of the season, combining screen time, confessionals, their individual paths to a win, and trends with past winners.

Are you ready for “the most unpredictable ‘Survivor’ finale ever”? Well, you better be, because that’s exactly how CBS is promoting its three-hour finale event on Wednesday, May 15. In the latest preview trailer (watch above), the only castaway who gets any major screen time is, of course, Rick Devens, the fan-favorite underdog who has an uphill climb to make it to the final tribal council. “I’m so excited!” Rick shouts about making it to the Final 5. “This is a million dollars. I’m trying everything I can.”
SEERick Devens deserves to win ‘Survivor: Edge of Extinction,’ but the odds are stacked against him
Also in the promo video, the 11 voted-out castaways are seen competing for their shot at returning to the game. They are: Reem Daly, Chris Underwood, Aubry Bracco, Joe Anglim, Eric Hafemann, Julia Carter, David Wright, Kelley Wentworth, Dan “Wardog” DaSilva, Ron Clark and last week’s eliminated player Aurora McCreary.

Even though Rick Devens leads Gold Derby’s predictions to win “Survivor: Edge of Extinction” on Wednesday, May 15, he still has insurmountable odds stacked against him. This Georgia newscaster has been the game’s number one target ever since returning from Extinction Island at the merge, but thanks to a combination of winning immunity challenges, finding hidden idols and making the right alliances at the right time, he’s managed to make it to the Top 5. Will lightning strike for Rick or will his tribe mates finally get their wish by voting him out?

Aurora McCreary really, really wanted to be taken on the helicopter/resort reward in the 13th episode of “Survivor: Edge of Extinction,” but challenge winner Gavin Whitson instead invited along Victoria Baamonde and Lauren O’Connell. Back at camp, a disappointed Aurora tried to distract herself by soaking up some rays on the beach when the threesome literally flew overhead in the helicopter. While the episode didn’t show Aurora’s perspective of this memorable encounter, CBS has now released a deleted scene revealing just that. Watch the video above.

In the penultimate episode of “Survivor: Edge of Extinction,” the near-unanimous plan was to vote out Rick Devens, but he ruined their easy vote when he won the immunity challenge. The castaways then set their sights on Julie Rosenberg, but Rick bluffed at tribal council that he was going to use his hidden idol on Julie, so Plan C was enacted. That’s when Aurora McCreary was voted out. “It was so predictable” that Rick was bluffing, Aurora proclaimed in her exit interview at the end of the 13th episode. “I can’t understand how anyone fell for that.”

Only two episodes remain of “Survivor: Edge of Extinction,” and there are still 16 people who could win the game. That is thanks to the Extinction Island twist, with 10 players voted out hoping to win a spot back in. Setting that group aside, the six remaining active players in the game have all had fascinating journeys up to this point. While some are shown in the edit much more than others, there is still potential for each of them to win that $1 million check and the title of Sole Survivor.
Below is a ranking of the six players left in the active game in order of who has the most viable winner’s edit, taking into account screen time, confessionals, whether they are the hero or the villain, and other X-factors.

“I think Rick Devens has gone crazy,” declares Lauren O’Connell in the preview trailer for the penultimate episode of “Survivor: Edge of Extinction.” After playing both an expired advantage menu and a real hidden immunity idol at last week’s tribal council, Rick is now scouring every inch of the island to try to find one last power that will help him make it into the Season 38 finale. Will he succeed? Watch the “Survivor” Episode 13 preview trailer above.

“He’s so cocky he thinks that they’re gonna fall for this,” Gold Derby’s Susan Wloszczyna says to Marcus James Dixon about Ron Clark giving his expired advantage menu to Rick Devens in the loved ones episode of “Survivor: Edge of Extinction.” Even though the menu clearly stated that it expired after the third tribal council, Susan’s theory is that Ron deviously “ripped it up to the portion that only showed the advantages.” Watch our “Survivor” Season 38, Episode 12 video recap above.

With only two episodes to go, “Survivor: Edge of Extinction” is down to the Final 6 (or 7 if we’re counting on another return). With jury-favorite-apparent Rick Devens as the universal target to eliminate next, other Top 6ers Lauren O’Connell, Victoria Baamonde, Gavin Whitson, Aurora McCreary and Julie Rosenberg head in to the final stretch of the game with only a small target on their own backs. That leaves the door wide open for anyone–including Rick, if he can win some immunities–to carve their path to the win, but it will take a tight and small alliance to make that happen.

“Survivor” is getting down to the nitty-gritty as only eight players remain in the proper game. After a post-merge of the Kama alliance getting picked off one by one, the Manu-turned-Lesu tribe finally lost some players last week and big ones, too — the exit of David Wright and Kelley Wentworth means there are no more returning players in the game. Looking at the edit, the Final 8 have had varying degrees of screen time through the first 10 hours of this season and we now have a pretty good sense of who probably won’t make it to the end and who has a plausible winner’s edit.
Meanwhile, another eight castaways are on Extinction Island getting ready to fight for a chance to get back into the game. It remains to be seen if one of those booted players can make it back in and somehow win the season, but for now,...

Will the next winner of “Survivor” be a 21-year-old college student from Waco, Texas?
According to Gold Derby’s “Edge of Extinction” racetrack odds, Lauren O’Connell is far ahead of the pack with leading 9/2 odds to win the $1 million check. It’s a huge show of support for the castaway who’s been on the bottom for most of the game — both physically and mentally. However, with a hidden immunity idol still in her pocket and the fact that she’s no longer tethered to huge targets like Kelley Wentworth (who was eliminated) and Dan “Wardog” DaSilva (who betrayed her), might Lauren sneak her way into the winner’s circle?
See‘Survivor’ video recap: Will Wardog be voted out next after his villainous blindside of Kelley? [Watch]
Lauren started out this 38th season on the always-losing Manu tribe, but despite several repeated trips to tribal council she was never voted out.

They knew what they were getting into. They figured they would have huge targets on their backs. But the quartet of returning “Survivor” veterans — Aubry Bracco, Joe Anglim, David Wright and Kelley Wentworth — too often let their guard down when it came to the other less-experienced players, who have blindsided all four of them at tribal council after the 10th episode of Season 38.
But they still might get a second chance after choosing to spend some time on the purgatorial Extinction Island. One newbie player, Rick Devens, already re-entered the game after winning a challenge opposite other residents of the forbidding oasis after the tribal merge. Just achieving that feat helps him to become one of the front-runners. The joke-loving TV news anchor has a great social game and has pretty much made smart choices since returning to the game — even winning an immunity challenge this week. But let’s...

“I’m impressed by the game move of the other players,” Kelley Wentworth admitted after being voted out of the 10th episode of “Survivor: Edge of Extinction” by one of her closest allies. “I’m pissed at myself because I had an idol in my pocket. I can’t believe I’m that person. So now I’m that dumb ‘Survivor’ player,” she harrumphed after taking the torch and heading off to Extinction Island. Kelley then shook up the game by telling the Edge of Extinction castaways that Lauren O’Connell has the other immunity idol — might that information come back to haunt Lauren?

After last week’s shocking “Survivor: Edge of Extinction” tribal council in which the entire Vata tribe imploded on itself, only 10 castaways remained in the hunt for the $1 million prize. They are former Kama allies Victoria Baamonde, Ron Clark, Aurora McCreary, Julie Rosenberg and Gavin Whitson, and Manu/Lesu tribe mates Dan “Wardog” DaSilva, Rick Devens, Lauren O’Connell, Kelley Wentworth and David Wright. So which Two castaways ended up being voted out across a pair of tribal councils in Wednesday’s 10th episode?

With 10 people left in the proper “Survivor: Edge of Extinction” game, it’s time to check in on who is emerging as a threat to win the season. After a highly successful pre-merge, the original Kama tribe has been steadily bleeding members post-merge, including Joe Anglim, Eric Hafemann and Julia Carter. The tables have certainly turned as the unlucky original Manu tribe that became Lesu now finds itself in a power position. Should any of that group get to the end, they certainly have a compelling story to tell the jury about surviving the early hardships and a seemingly unbeatable Kama tribe.
Looking at the edit, each of those Lesu members is well-defined and we know their personal story and strategic acumen. The same cannot be said for much of the Kama tribe, though there are some notable exceptions. Here are the Top 5 “Survivor” 38 contestants we think have the best...

Getting to the Final 10 on “Survivor” is certainly a huge accomplishment, but that doesn’t necessarily guarantee you a strong, positive edit on the show. Some “Survivor: Edge of Extinction” contestants have learned this the hard way as their story has gone on the back-burner in favor of their fellow tribemates. That doesn’t mean a few of these unlucky players can’t emerge in the final episodes of the season, but their chances are considerably weaker than others whose stories have been explored throughout.

Following one of the liveliest and most frantic tribal councils in series history, “Survivor: Edge of Extinction” has become incredibly unpredictable. A few weeks ago it looked like the original Kama alliance was going to bulldoze through the entire competition, but then they cracked and now they’re demolished. After losing five of their numbers in the first five weeks, the original Manu tribe has somehow remained in the game to this point where they match the original Kama in a 5-5 split. But that isn’t saying much considering how fractured both sides are. Inside the group of 10 are four power pairs, closely aligned to one another, but with relationships to the other pairs so strained that there’s no telling how they’ll combine to decide the next vote.
With Wardog and Aurora floating around in the middle, the table is set for another wild scramble among the power pairs.

Even though David Wright only received one vote at last week’s “craziest” tribal council ever, this “Survivor: Edge of Extinction” contestant has no regrets about playing his and Rick Devens‘ combined hidden immunity idol. “It was the right move given the just complete chaos that we were surrounded by,” he declares in the sneak peek video for Wednesday’s 10th episode (watch above). Instead, Julia Carter ended up being eliminated with nine votes cast against her, including those of some of her closest allies.

“Tribal council was a mess!” Those were the first words Julia Carter said after being voted out of the ninth episode of “Survivor: Edge of Extinction.” Julia wasn’t exaggerating. The two-act tribal council was one of the “craziest” of all time, with all 11 remaining players scrambling around and huddling up in what was described by one castaway as a “live” tribal. In the end, Julia received a whopping nine votes, with the other two votes going to Kelley Wentworth (Julia’s vote) and David Wright (Aurora McCreary‘s vote).

The brick wall Kama alliance took a tumble on “Survivor: Edge of Extinction” this week, upending what was beginning to look like a straight shot to the final tribal council for would-be frontrunners Eric Hafemann and Ron Clark. Eric was sent to Extinction Island by members of his own alliance and Ron, Julie Rosenberg and Rick Devens were left to pick up the pieces. The move benefited most Lauren O’Connell and Kelley Wentworth who have been the de factor targets for the last few weeks.
Lauren and Kelley have been in a tight two-person alliance since the start of the game and still each hold on to a hidden immunity idol. The shift in power among the Kama six gives them both an in-road in a group of players that had previously walled them off. Check below for my updated power rankings that see Ron and Julie take a...

“Let’s just say, my girl Aubry did well,” Gold Derby’s Susan Wloszczyna tells Marcus James Dixon about Aubry Bracco finding yet another advantage in this week’s episode of “Survivor: Edge of Extinction.” On Extinction Island Aubry was the only person to figure out what the “take a step back” clue referred to, so she was able to find a practice advantage as well as a secret vote that she bestowed to former tribe mate Aurora McCreary. “I like that she gave it to Aurora. Now that’s what we call a blindside. Eric Hafemann went into tribal council during Wednesday’s eighth episode of “Survivor: Edge of Extinction” confident that he would survive the night. Post-merge on “Survivor: Edge of Extinction” the scores are 2-2 among the vets (Joe Anglim and Aubry Bracco are “out” while Kelley Wentworth and David Wright are still “in”) and 7-5 in terms of original tribes. The Kama members continue to dominate the game and maintain a majority over the five Manu members struggling to survive, but David and his ally Rick Devens, the first to return from Extinction Island after last week’s challenge, have found a relatively safe spot in the middle of the game where they have an idol between them, a positive edit from producers and the favor of Julie Rosenberg, this week’s most powerful player.

In recent years the “Survivor” jury has been composed of anywhere from 8 to 10 ousted castaways, with “Survivor: Ghost Island” clocking in at a record 11 jury votes after a 5-5 tie required the third finalist, Laurel Johnson, to cast the deciding vote between eventual winner Wendell Holland and runner-up Domenick Abbate. That record is about to be shattered. If the rest of the current 38th season of “Survivor: Edge of Extinction” plays out according to plan, with a Final 3 and no one else leaving the game, then a whopping 13 jury members will decide the winner.

We just got through watching two of the biggest personalities of the season, Aubry Bracco and Wendy Diaz, get voted out, and now there’s a possibility that one could come back into the game. This may throw a wrench into the games of more than a few remaining castaways, who have played the game thinking Aubry, Wendy, Reem Daly, Keith Sowell, Chris Underwood and Rick Devens were gone for good.
I’m filling in for John Benutty for this week’s “Survivor” power rankings as we head into the merge. Take a look at my list of who’s in the best position in the game after six episodes of “Survivor: Edge of Extinction.
