Sunday night’s 96th Academy Awards signaled the end of a memorable Oscar season, inspiring Gold Derby senior editors Denton Davidson, Marcus James Dixon and Daniel Montgomery along with news and features editor Ray Richmond and Tariq Khan – prolific Gold Derby contributor and encyclopedic awards expert extraordinaire – to slug it out one last time over Zoom and mourn the categories that got away in their forecast. But before grieving their misguided last-minute prediction switches, the men discussed what they liked about the ceremony itself. Watch their colorful and opinionated discussion above.
Dixon loved the banter interplay of presenter duos Arnold Schwarzenegger/Danny DeVito and Emily Blunt/Ryan Gosling. Montgomery found it a “pretty solid” show that peaked for him in Jonathan Glazer’s acceptance speech after winning international film for “The Zone of Interest.” Davidson applauded director Mstyslav Chernov’s powerful speech after winning in Best Documentary Feature for “20 Days in Mariupol.

While there remains plenty of suspense surrounding the SAG Awards film categories at the ceremony taking place at the Shrine Auditorium & Expo Hall this Saturday at 5 p.m. Pst/8 p.m. Est (streaming over Netflix), there is decidedly less drama when it comes to the TV categories. It’s simply a fact. At least, this is the way Gold Derby senior editors Denton Davidson, Daniel Montgomery and Marcus James Dixon, news and features editor Ray Richmond and encyclopedic awards expert extraordinaire Tariq Khan saw it during their SAG Awards TV category predictions slugfest this week. The consensus is that “Succession” will sweep the three TV drama categories, “The Bear” the three comedy categories and “Beef” the limited series/TV pair. There may be some non-“Bear” wiggle room in at least one category. More on that in a moment. Watch the editors’ colorful discussion above.

It’s been presumed for months now that the lead actress race in film categories at the various ceremonies was destined to be a two-way race between Emma Stone for “Poor Things” and Lily Gladstone for “Killers of the Flower Moon.” Lately, it’s been more of a one-way race, with Stone topping BAFTA, the Golden Globes and Choice Choice honors. But in a Screen Actors Guild Film Awards predictions slugfest this week in advance of Saturday’s ceremony, Gold Derby senior editors Denton Davidson, Marcus James Dixon and Daniel Montgomery and news and features editor Ray Richmond were asked to consider a third contender: Margot Robbie for “Barbie.” This is because they were joined by encyclopedic awards expert extraordinaire and regular Gold Derby contributor Tariq Khan, who made a convincing case that Robbie was poised for a massive upset based on his personal survey of some 500 SAG Awards voters.
