Seven Network in Australia is this week to begin broadcasting “Police Strike Force,” a documentary series made in close partnership with the New South Wales police. The 6×60 minute series is produced by Wtfn and licensed internationally by Fred Media. Premiering on Channel 7 and 7plus from Wednesday, the show depicts real-life police investigations, stings, and taskforce operations. The narratives are recounted by the men and women who broke each case and are copiously illustrated using video and sound captured by the police media unit, combined with surveillance, search and interview footage taken by the investigating units. Wtfn also recently produced eight-part “Code 1: Minute by Minute” sister show, also for Seven. Each episode tells the story of a single crime incident, including one covering the 2017 Bourke Street Mall tragedy in Melbourne, when a man murdered six people by deliberately ramming his car into a busy shopping mall. – Patrick Frater...

In the Aquarius Films and ABC drama Savage River, Jocelyn Moorhouse was offered the kind of mini-series she’d love to watch herself.
The Dressmaker director is an enthusiastic binge watcher of crime mysteries and Scandi-noir – particularly those with great female characters – so the Katherine Langford-led series was right up her alley.
“I thought, ‘Oh my God, I’ve always wanted to do one of these, and here it is.’ It’s dark, brooding and really well plotted,” she tells If.
Now three weeks into pre-production, Savage River was officially announced as part of the ABC’s upfronts today. Production will begin early next year in Melbourne and regional Victoria.
Langford plays Miki Anderson, a young woman who returns to her hometown in rural Victoria after eight years in prison.
She’s determined to finally move on with her life, getting a job in the local meatworks, but the...

ABC director of entertainment and specialist Michael Carrington told If the broadcaster was pleased to be able to meet demand in the space.
“It’s something our audiences want and I’m thrilled we’re able to provide it,” he said.

Fin Edquist.
Fin Edquist is perhaps best known for animated adventures aimed at children and families – but the screenwriter finds equal satisfaction in creating adult-themed dramas.
Reflecting that diversity, his upcoming slate includes an Alice Springs-set series to be produced by Brindle Films’ Rachel Clements; a feature film spin-off of On the Edge, a planned TV animated children’s series; and a dark thriller/horror.
“My natural inclination is to the darker stuff,” says Edquist, whose writing credits include McLeod’s Daughters and House Husbands; he also co-created The Secret Daughter with Sam Meikle, Justin Monjo and Kristen Dunphy but didn’t get the chance to work on the Screentime/Seven Network show.
“The kids stuff is something I discovered later on in my career. I enjoy them equally and am glad I can work in both. They present different challenges and requirements and different forms of escape.

Since securing a Us manager, Fourward’s John Levin last April, she hopes to attract Us finance to productions made in Australia.
Among the projects in the pipeline is Dreamscapers (formerly The Gifted), which received Screen Australia’s Gender Matters funding. She has completed the pilot and a bible for the 13-part horror drama which follows a 16-year-old orphan who is suspected of killing her father and is offered refuge at the Phoenix Institute for Gifted Teenagers.
The girl soon discovers the school is run by a highly evolved supernatural race preparing for a war against humanity.

(L-r) Greg McLean, Phoebe Tonkin, Bryan Brown, Glen Dolman.
During filming of Stan’s Bloom in Victoria last year the creator/showrunner Glen Dolman was already hatching ideas for a second series of the supernatural drama.
So when Stan’s Mike Sneesby and Nick Forward ordered another six episodes in April after he pitched an overview Dolman pressed ahead with plans to bring a fresh perspective to the show.
That involved hiring new directors in Greg McLean and Sian Davies (who collaborated on Stan’s The Gloaming), assembling a new team of writers and adding half a dozen fresh faces to the cast, with the assistance of casting director Leigh Pickford.
Joining him in the writers’ room are Giula Sandler, Matt Ford, Tommy Murphy and Catherine S McMullen. Dolman scripted four of the six eps of the first series, which was named Drama Series Production of the Year at last...

Kris Mrksa.
Kris Mrksa loves writing Australian dramas but his primary focus now is creating projects for UK producers – and cracking the Us market.
The in-demand screenwriter has created two miniseries for the UK’s New Pictures and is developing two shows for the same producer and another for Lookout Point and Expanded Media.
After signing with ICM he is also looking at opportunities in the Us. “Nothing firm yet, but I have been talking to a few people and there are some interesting projects being discussed,” he tells If.
His first UK commission was Requiem, a six-part supernatural drama/thriller which starred Lydia Wilson as an accomplished cellist whose life is turned upside down after her mother’s suicide, produced by New Pictures for BBC One and Netflix.
New Pictures and ITV then commissioned him to create White House Farm, a crime drama based on the infamous case of Jeremy Bamber,...

Chris Oliver-Taylor on the set of ‘Neighbours’.
Since taking the helm of Fremantle’s Asia Pacific operations last September, Chris Oliver-Taylor has been busy realigning the Australasian business.
Adhering to Fremantle’s global mantra as “the place creatives call home,” the CEO has significantly upped the drama development budget and is prepared to commission blind scripts, i.e., before a network is aboard.
Oliver-Taylor and his team led by Jennifer Collins, the Australian director of content, are discussing projects with a host of A-grade writers including Robert Connolly, Giula Sandler, Katherine Thomson, Tommy Murphy and Matt Cameron.
“We want to work with world-class writers, predominantly but not exclusively Australian,” he tells If in his first interview since moving over from Matchbox Pictures, succeeding Ian Hogg.
“The second part of the strategy is having great IP, whether it’s a book, a play or an original idea. The third is a strong financial strategy.

Margot Robbie (I, Tonya and Suicide Squad) is developing and producing a female-focused Shakespeare series that will be led by a full female creative team of writers and directors. They will produce ten standalone episodes and each episode will be a standalone story based on the work of Shakespeare. But the story will be updated to "comment on our modern, global society."
The concept of the series comes from Giula Sandler (Nowhere Boys) and she will work across the series and will also write one episode. Other than she and Robbie, no other talent has been announced yet. But they want to bring on talented individuals "with unique and distinct voices, and reflect different cultures and areas."
LuckyChap is one of the production companies that is producing the project and they released the following statement:
“We are thrilled about this Australian partnership as an opportunity to showcase unique, distinctly female voices in writing,...

A couple of years ago a friend of filmmaker Tony Ayres gave him a tantalising .what if. proposition: What if there was a small country town in Victoria where people who had been dead for up to 200 years came back to life?
That sparked an idea which he developed with writer Louise Fox and has evolved into Glitch, a six-part supernatural drama for the ABC. Screen Australia has agreed to co-fund the Matchbox Pictures production, which is due to start shooting in October.
The key character is the town.s cop, James, whose wife died from breast cancer two years earlier and reappears. Each episode will introduce a succession of undead characters. No director has yet been announced.
.We don.t often do high-concept supernatural drama in Australia,. Ayres tells If. .It.s my favourite genre. It will be a very Australian spin on the genre. We are looking for emotional truth.

Jessica Marais in Love Child..
.
Sarah Lambert wasn.t around in the 1960s but Love Child, the drama series she created for the Nine Network, sets to capture that era of revolution, bohemia, youthful innocence and exuberance.
The eight-part series set in Kings Cross in 1969 evidently delivers on that promise, encouraging the network to commission a second season as announced by director of television Michael Healy at the launch of Nine's 2014 season this week..
As the writer-producer, Lambert was inspired to make the show when she learned that a close family friend of her mother was one of thousands of women who had been forced to live in an unwed mothers' home and give up her baby daughter for adoption 20 years earlier.
Produced by Playmaker Media, the series follows characters who live and work in a maternity hospital and home for unwed mothers, contrasted with those who inhabit the streets...

"Little Deaths has taught us all so much," filmmaker Sian Davies enthuses. "It's been a labour of love and bloody-minded determination that's got it to this point. We've all learned so much and it feels fantastic that a project born of sheer passion and somewhat naïve ambition has grown with us all to finally find its place in the world. God I sound like a parent," she laughs. One can understand why Davies is so proud of the project that has finally been given a cinema release. The first meetings for Little Deaths - between the core creative group of writer Giula Sandler, directors Ben Chessell and Chris Benz - began back in 2003.
