Steven Wilson of Porcupine Tree has announced a new solo album, The Harmony Codex, and has shared the lead single “Economies of Scale” ahead of the LP’s September 29th release date.
The song lets Wilson — a renowned producer in his own right — explore his soulful side, as he builds layers of vocal harmonies around a pitter-pattering electronic rhythm that casts an early-aughts Radiohead vibe.
“I’m happy to announce my seventh album The Harmony Codex,” wrote Wilson on his website. “This one is a real trip, a beautiful and experimental 65-minute labyrinth of a record, with almost every one of its 10 tracks taking a different musical approach.”
Wilson also teased the follow-up single, “Impossible Tightrope,” which will be released next week. Wilson described the song as “completely different” than “Economies of Scale”: a “mostly instrumental 11-minute hybrid of progressive rock, spiritual jazz, and electronica.”

Kevin Bacon joined Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show for a segment called “First Drafts of Rock,” which saw the pair performing an alternate version of Tears for Fears’ 1985 song “Head Over Heels.”
Standing in for Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith, complete with ’80s haircuts, Bacon and Fallon showcased the supposed “first draft” of the New Wave song. While the original tune opens with “I wanted to be with you alone / and talk about the weather,” this version takes the discussion of the weather to the next level.

It’s all a game. On Thursday, Tears for Fears released the music video for their single “Break the Man” — and it follows identical, black suit-sporting men as they go about their lives mindlessly walking through a labyrinth.
“No more wondering what happens now/No more holding your feet to the fire/When everything is running down/No more pain,” the duo sings on the track as the video becomes a kaleidoscope of dystopia.
By the end of the video, each man reaches the top of a ledge and jumps off to their seeming demise.

Tears for Fears have mapped out a 2022 U.S. tour in support of their first new album in 17 years, The Tipping Point.
“We couldn’t be more excited to start playing concerts again. We’ve missed seeing our friends on the road around the world and the energy of performing live,” Tears for Fears’ Curt Smith said in a statement; the band last toured the U.S. in 2018.
The monthlong amphitheater trek kicks off May 20th in Cincinnati, Ohio and circles the nation before concluding June 25th in Wantagh, New York.

Tears for Fears have shared the previously unreleased “Rhythm of Life,” the first offering from their upcoming Seeds of Love box set.
The demo was recorded by frontman Roland Orzabal and keyboardist Nicky Holland in 1986, but the track didn’t make it onto the 1989 album. Instead, Orzabal gave it to singer Oleta Adams — who sings on the opening track “Woman in Chains” — for her 1990 album Circle of One, which he produced.
“Climbin’ every mountain, always killing time/Count the cost as days go by,” he sings over a steady groove.

Weezer linked up with Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith of Tears for Fears for a performance of “Everybody Wants to Rule the World” on Jimmy Kimmel Live Monday.
Smith and Rivers Cuomo shared vocal duties on the song, trading verses while Weezer guitarist Brian Bell breezed through the song’s famous twinkling guitar lines alongside Orzabal. The best moments of the performance, however, came when Orzabal joined Cuomo and Smith to croon the famous chorus in perfect three-part harmony.

As it has been well established by this point, this is a show where the improbable has become ordinary, and the sensible rarely exists at all. Like its spiritual precursor Twin Peaks, Riverdale will do whatever the hell it wants, and viewers can either hop aboard like Betty on the back of uneasy rider Jughead's motorcycle or tune out entirely. Obviously, we here at Den of Geek are all in, but that doesn't mean to say that the journey is always going to be a comfortable one. Which brings us to tonight's instalment, perhaps the most uneven episode to date.

Uh, Betty Cooper, is that you? Riverdale is great at being absolutely nuts, and there's no shortage of scenes that made us go "huh?" But tonight's episode verged on an uncomfortable "huh??" as Betty (Lili Reinhart) stripped down—in front of everybody—and performed a very seductive rendition of a Tears for Fears song, practicing her stripper pole moves in front of her mom, her boyfriend, his dad, and an entire gang. Apparently it's all part of the outdated, misogynistic (Toni's words, not ours) initiation ritual for ladies in the gang, called "The Serpent Dance." Toni said Betty didn't want to know, but uh yeah, Betty did. She...

One of my favorite all-time songs from the 80s is UB40’s “Red Red Wine.” It’s the kind of song that when you hear it playing on the radio you’d never, ever turn it off. In fact it’s probably in my top 10 songs that I’d “never turn off” if playing on the radio. I think my number one in that arena is “Everybody Wants to Rule the World” by Tears for Fears. Anyway, let’s get on with “Red Red Wine.” Why did I never know this about the song? “Red Red Wine” was written by Neil Diamond in 1967.
Did You Know that UB40’s “Red Red Wine” is a Cover of a 1967 Neil Diamond Song?...

Many weird-world genre bending millennial epics have already dated badly, but not Richard Kelly’s sci-fi / horror / satirical mind-trip about a guy given a glimpse of time travel in another dimension. The wit hasn’t faded and the menace hasn’t cooled, and the cast seems hipper than ever: Jake Gyllenhaal, Jena Malone, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Mary McDonnell, Patrick Swayze, Noah Wyle, Drew Barrymore, Katharine Ross. April 18th looks to be another fun day of home entertainment releases for genre fans, as we have an excellent variety of films—both old and new—coming home to Blu-ray and DVD. M. Night Shyamalan’s psychological thriller Split makes its way to both formats on Tuesday courtesy of Universal Studios Home Entertainment, and Arrow Video is keeping busy with a trio of Blu-rays: The Night Evelyn Came Out of the Grave, The Red Queen Kills Seven Times, and their four-disc set celebrating Richard Kelly’s Donnie Darko.
Other notable releases for April 18th include Scream Factory’s stellar collector’s edition of Tales From the Hood, Contamination .7, The Handmaid’s Tale, and The Mephisto Waltz from Kino Lorber.

I’m literally listening to the song as I write this. Tears for Fears recorded what I consider to be one of the best songs in the entire world back in 1985. It’s been used in numerous movies (best used in the movie Real Genius ending credits). That song, as you know, is “Everybody Wants to Rule the World.” It was actually used in a video I posted to this site earlier today. Someone decided to make the Game of Thrones Season 7 trailer into an 80s themed trailer and what song did they use? You guessed it. So not only

Thanks for taking the time to talk with me today, Richard. How did the restoration and the theatrical re-release of Donnie Darko come about? Did Arrow Films approach you, and was this something that you had been wanting to do anyway?

To celebrate the brand new 4K restoration of Donnie Darko – out 9th Jan. 2017 on DVD & Blu-ray – we are giving away a DVD of the Theatrical Cut courtesy of Arrow Video.
Fifteen years before Stranger Things combined science-fiction, Spielberg-ian touches and 80s nostalgia to much acclaim, Richard Kelly set the template – and the high-water mark – with his debut feature.
Described by its director as “The Catcher in the Rye as told by Philip K. Dick”, Donnie Darko combines an eye-catching, eclectic cast – pre-stardom Jake and Maggie Gyllenhaal, heartthrob Patrick Swayze, former child star Drew Barrymore, Oscar nominees Mary McDonnell and Katherine Ross, and television favourite Noah Wyle – and an evocative soundtrack of 80s classics by Echo and the Bunnymen, Tears for Fears and Duran Duran.
This brand-new 4K restoration, supervised by Richard Kelly, allows a modern classic to finally receive the home video treatment it deserves.

Richard Kelly’s rereleased tale of suburban angst, starring a tremendous Jake Gyllenhaal, is a captivating triumph
In 2001, 27-year-old writer-director Richard Kelly created a pop classic of American suburban paranoia in Donnie Darko, now on rerelease – a movie with something of Back to the Future, Twin Peaks, American Beauty and of course Harvey. This film made Tears for Fears hip (kind of) and had a tremendous discovery in the young Jake Gyllenhaal, playing Donnie, a high-school kid on medication for the symptoms of paranoid schizophrenia. When a jet engine falls out of the sky one day on Donnie’s house, an event that would have killed Donnie had he not been sleepwalking around the local golf course, it creates an anxiety spasm that ruptures his already fragile wellbeing and he hallucinates a huge, scarily voiced rabbit that tells him to commit acts of violence. Apparently all Mr. Robot needed to shock the crap out of us again was to take a break from Elliot and his Mind Palace. After last week's disappointing "Brain prison has been real prison all along!" episode, the show leaves the be-hoodied boy wonder off camera entirely to focus on the other Alderson sibling: the magnetic but mysterious Darlene. And lest you thought all the crazy wound up on her brother's side of the gene pool, boy, have we got a tale for you.

A review of tonight's Mr. Robot coming up just as soon as I create an Angelfire fan page... "I didn't know I could do that." -Darlene A year ago, an episode like "Successor" — in which Elliot is entirely absent, along with his eponymous alter ego, while the focus is almost entirely on Darlene and her remaining comrades — would have been unthinkable. In season 1, Elliot was the show, and vice versa, and most of fsociety barely registered as more than vague shapes lingering on the edge of the frame (which, given the framing of Mr. Robot, rendered them particularly obscure). At this stage of season 2, though, it mostly works. It's not even that Mobley or Trenton or Cisco have transformed into vivid and exciting characters (though we're at least at the point where I remember their names), but that after spending so much time this summer inside Elliot's head — up to...

Finn Wolfhard, the young actor who played one of the leads in Netflix's hit Stranger Things, has turned his attention from replicating the Eighties on the show to the Nineties on Twitter. Yesterday, the 13-year-old posted video of himself playing the opening chords to Nirvana's "Lithium" on an unplugged electric guitar.
On Stranger Things, Wolfhard played Mike Wheeler, an inquisitive preteen who will stop at nothing to find his missing friend, Will Byers, and who befriends a girl his age at the same time his friend goes missing. In an interview with Vulture,...

For over six decades, Disney has been igniting in little girls the dream of being a princess. Then, in 2001, with the help of Julie Andrews and Anne Hathaway, the House of Mouse showed us that wearing the tiara is not all it’s cracked up to be. The Princess Diaries opened in theaters 15 years ago today. Hathaway’s Mia Thermopiles learns just what kind of pressure and responsibility is involved with being princess when she learns she’s the heir to the crown of Genovia. “I don’t want to run my own country. I just want to pass 10th grade,” she moans. It was the film debut of Anne Hathaway, who has since become Hollywood royalty herself, earning an Oscar for Les Misérables and nabbing coveted roles like Catwoman in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises. The Princess Diaries gave us Anne Hathaway, and it also gave us...

Show notes:
The director, George Sluizer, didn’t really direct much else besides this film and its remake The soundtrack definitely has a Tears for Fears vibe to it, which is 100% ok with me Herb checked with his Dutch parents to make sure we pronounced Spoorloos correctly Bernard-Pierre Donnadieu is basically perfect as the villain in this film If you enjoy this film, you’d probably also love Alfred Hitchock’s The Lady Vanishes The actress who plays the second girlfriend Lieneke, Gwen Eckhaus, was randomly in a television series in the Netherlands called Spoorloos verdwenen, which I assume is unrelated Getting a compliment on your film from Stanley Kubrick is a big...

American Idol season 1 debuted about a week after The Wire season 1 did. Though my TV tastes over the years trended much more towards complicated scripted dramas like the latter, I spent a long time watching the former, and enjoying it in the moments when the series wasn't busy padding its run time with inanities (like the entire judging career of Randy Jackson) and simply let the contestants sing. Often, those performances were just overpraised photocopies of the original moments, but when an Idol singer put their own stamp on a familiar tune, or dug up an obscurity and made it sound like a hit, I couldn't begrudge the series its enormous popularity. Eventually, the show got too repetitive for me to stick with, especially as more and more scripted options rose up demanding my attention. The last time I watched an Idol season from start to finish was the 9th,...

Diverse, awe-inspiring and memorable treasures that have sadly fallen off the radar
The noughties were a tough decade for film music fans. Not only was there the unprecedented loss of four great masters in the form of Jerry Goldsmith, Elmer Bernstein, Michael Kamen and Basil Poledouris; the nature of the industry itself began to go through some seismic changes, not all of them for the better.
With the art of film scoring becoming ever more processed, driven increasingly by ghost writers, electronic augmentation and temp tracks, prospects looked bleak. However, this shouldn’t shield the fact that there were some blindingly brilliant scores composed during this period. Here’s but a small sampling of them.

29 years ago today, CBS aired music icon Frank Sinatra’s final screen role. He guest starred in an episode of Magnum, P.I. In the episode, titled “Laura,” Sinatra played a retired New York cop who learns that his granddaughter was murdered during his retirement celebration. He asks Magnum for help in his hunt for the murderers. Sinatra appeared on the cover of TV Guide with Magnum, P.I. star Tom Selleck the week his episode aired. Though the CBS detective series was Sinatra’s final screen acting role, he could have had a part in The Godfather: Part III afterward. Francis Ford Coppola offered Sinatra the role of Don Altobello, but he didn’t end up taking the part. Oddly enough, the part went to Eli Wallach, whom Sinatra replaced in From Here to Eternity. We actually have something to celebrate #ThrowbackThursday with today: a song Miley Cyrus and Kanye West worked on three years ago. The pop star reportedly left her own MTV Vma party in 2013—yes, the year she infamously twerked all over Robin Thicke—to record a remix of "Black Skinhead" with 'Ye. However, we haven't heard even a hint about it until Wednesday night when it finally leaked on the Internet. Though recorded just a few years ago, the toned down track takes us back to the 80s with Cyrus' funky interpolation covering Tears for Fears' 1985 hit "Everybody Wants to Rule the World." The remix also features quite a bit of Travi$ Scott's autotune magic and even a...

Three years ago, Kanye shocked rap snobs when a "Black Skinhead" remix with Miley Cyrus was rumored to be in the works (remember, this was at peak #twerkgate), only for it never to materialize. Fast-forward a few stolen laptops and a supposed G.O.O.D. Friday reboot later, and that unfinished remix has finally made its way onto the interwebs, leaking Wednesday night. What does a Miley-Kanye union from 2013 sound like in 2016? Like 1985, apparently — if we're to go off Miley's cover of Tears for Fears' "Everybody Wants to Rule the World," which makes up the majority of the considerably toned-down song. Travis Scott and Lupe Fiasco may or may not also appear on the track. Everything may or may not be right with the world.

Premiering its first two episodes at the 2015 Berlin Film Festival, the eight episode Cold War television mini-series “Deutschland 83” went on to become the first German series to be broadcast on American television in its native language. A Sundance TV original series (co-produced by Rtl Television), it stands as one of the more notable moments in television from 2015, an example of a growing international industry with increased cross-over potential. Created by husband and wife duo Anna Winger, an American novelist, and Joerg Winger, a German television producer, the series reflects not only period tensions but is constructed in a familiar format that’s earned it comparisons to the acclaimed Us series “The Americans.” Imbued with a delectable early 80s soundtrack, East meets West with vintage flair, an antidote to the curiously hampered mechanics of Steven Spielberg’s recent theatrical release, Bridge of Spies, which documents the birth of the infamous...

Deutschland 83, Season 1, Episode 5, “Cold Fire”

Last week’s episode of Deutschland 83 ended with Martin taking refuge with Yvonne at the commune after burying Linda’s body in the woods. Some of the emotional distaste of him immediately seeking the solace of another woman was alleviated by a fun, spacey little dance sequence accented with disco lights and Fischer-z’s “Cruise Missiles.” However the opening of “Cold Fire” doesn’t afford Martin that glossy cover: he’s just rolling around in bed with Yvonne, and it’s a little off-putting. But everyone grieves in their own way. According to Yvonne, Martin’s way is to get wasted and tell a bunch of Osho followers that he’s a spy, which she doesn’t believe. “I am a spy,” he deadpans before rolling on top...
