Reality dating show “Love Island’ is edited based on social media responses to the contestants an ITV exec has revealed.
“Social media is part of the success of ‘Love Island,’” Angela Jain, director of unscripted U.K. at ITV Studios told Channel 4 boss during a panel at the Royal Television Society conference in Cambridge on Wednesday.
“One of the smartest decisions we made right at the very beginning was to embed the digital team on location with the [‘Love Island’] production team in Majorca to create a feedback loop,” Jain explained. “Effectively the team are monitoring social media to really understand how the viewer is responding to the content and we would change — as we are able to because this is a fast turnaround show — we were able to change the editorial if we felt that one character was coming to the foreground more than the other and we would respond to it.

In figures published today, Ofcom revealed that Love Island‘s July 25 installment attracted 913 complaints. Fans of the show raised concerns about Mitchel Taylor’s treatment of Abi Moores, with some alleging that he bullied his fellow islander.

British former X Factor contestant Lucy Spraggan has revealed that she was a victim of rape during her time on the show in 2012.
At the time, viewers were only told that Spraggan – one of the favourites to win the series – had suddenly left the competition due to illness. Now, on the eve of the publication of her memoir, Spraggan has told The Guardian newspaper that she was actually attacked at night in her hotel room, where she was staying during her participation in the TV talent contest.
Spraggan has detailed the incident, which came after a drunken night out in London with other contestants. After a hotel porter had helped her into her room and she passed out, the same porter returned and raped her. He was later traced by his keycard record and given a ten-year jail sentence at trial the following year.

ITV boss Carolyn McCall said former “This Morning” anchor Phillip Schofield’s relationship with a young runner on this show was “deeply inappropriate” due to the “imbalance of power.”
McCall was appearing before a U.K. Culture Media and Sport Committee (Cms) parliamentary inquiry on the working culture and duty of care at ITV following the controversy around Schofield and his time on the long-running daytime show.
McCall was joined by ITV’s MD for media and entertainment Kevin Lygo and general counsel Kyla Mullins.
Mullins detailed the company’s investigation of Schofield’s affair, telling the Cms committee the runner – who is being referred to during proceedings as “Person X” – was asked by ITV 12 times about his relationship with Schofield and denied it each time. She said Schofield also repeatedly denied the claims until he resigned last month.

Much of the coverage of Prince Harry’s first day giving evidence in his legal case against Mirror Group Newspapers was centered on the contents of his 55-page witness statement, detailing the impact journalist intrusions have had on his life. On Wednesday, in his second day in the witness box, the royal focused on his specific allegations of unlawful journalistic activity.
The royal is suing the publishing group — whose titles include The Daily Mirror, Sunday Mirror and Sunday People — for damages, claiming that its journalists were linked to methods including phone-hacking, gaining information by deception and the use of private investigators for unlawful activities.
The trial at London’s High Court is centered around 33 stories that were published between 1995 and 2011, many of which involved his on-off relationship with then-girlfriend Chelsy Davy. Those stories were brought up in the cross-examination of the duke by the Mirror’s barrister Andrew Green, who...

London’s High Court saw Prince Harry take the stand on Tuesday, June 6 to testify against The Mirror, The Sunday Mirror and The Sunday People, three arms of the British tabloid press the royal is currently suing. During his testimony, the Duke of Sussex maintained his stance against the three papers, claiming: “Some editors and journalists do have blood on their hands.”
Prince Harry has accused the Mirror newspaper group of hacking his cellphone more than a decade ago, leading to targeted tabloid press against himself and later against his wife Meghan Markle.

“I did something very wrong, and then I lied about it consistently.” This is how Phillip Schofield, who recently had to resign from his role as co-host of U.K. TV giant ITV’s morning show This Morning, apologized for an affair with a much younger production assistant during a BBC interview that made headlines and waves Friday.
Asked about concerns that he may have groomed the young colleague, Schofield highlighted that he understood worries that he had abused his position of power, but emphasized that it “didn’t feel like that at the time.” Schofield, 61, also shared that he was “massively” concerned about the young man’s welfare, saying: “What he wants is for all this to go away.”

In a shock tell-all interview just days after resigning from ITV’s This Morning, Phillip Schofield has said he did not “abuse his power” when having an affair with a much younger runner, and that he “sees nothing ahead but blackness.”
Speaking to BBC host Amol Rajan, the visibly shaken former host said he has been feeling suicidal over the past few days and “understands how Caroline Flack felt,” referring to the former Love Island presenter who died by suicide in 2020.
“Last week, if my daughters hadn’t been there, I wouldn’t be here,” said Schofield. “They’ve been by my side every moment because they’re scared to let me out of their sight. It’s like a weird numbness. I know that’s a selfish point of view but you come to a point where you just think how much are you supposed to take.”

Embattled ITV anchor Phillip Schofield – who dramatically quit the network last Saturday after admitting to an affair with a young employee on his show – has said he “did not” groom the Pa in his first interview about the scandal.
Schofield, who spent two decades as the lead anchor on ITV’s daytime show “This Morning,” maintains that the relationship didn’t begin until the young man (whom Variety has agreed not to name at his request) was legally an adult. The man first began working on ITV show “This Morning” as an intern at the age of 19 (reportedly securing the internship with Schofield’s assistance) and was hired as a runner/Pa the following year.
Asked directly about claims he groomed the Pa, who reportedly first met Schofield when he was just 15 years old, the anchor replied: “I did not. I did not. I mean there are accusations of all sorts of things.

The BBC has commissioned a factual drama about the 2017 Grenfell Tower fire in which 72 people died.
Grenfell, which has been written by Bafta-winning Wolf Hall and The State screenwriter Peter Kosminsky, draws from more than five years of research and hours of public testimony.
The three-part series will give a comprehensive account of the events leading up to, during, and after the tragedy.
An inquiry into the catastrophe found that cladding on the building helped the fire spread as it was made from highly flammable material.
The new drama will be told from multiple perspectives, and will explore the impact of the blaze on survivors, the loved ones of those who died, the firefighters at the scene, and the wider London community.
“Occasionally, events occur in our national story which touch us all. The fire at Grenfell Tower is such an event,” said Kosminsky in a statement.

Caroline Flack’s mother has received an apology from the Metropolitan Police for not keeping a record of the reason it charged her daughter with assault.
The Independent Office for Police Conduct (Iopc) carried out a review into the case after complaints from the late Love Island presenter’s mother, Christine.
The Iopc’s review did not identify any misconduct by the Met, but it did criticise the police for the handling of Christine’s complaint.
Caroline took her own life in February 2020, ahead of a court appearance for allegedly assaulting her boyfriend, Lewis Burton.
Despite the Crown Prosecution Service (Cps) recommending she receive only a caution, the Met Police appealed against the Cps decision, resulting in Caroline facing a charge of assault by beating.
Christine made complaints about the decision to charge her daughter, claiming that Caroline had been treated differently because she was famous.

Do you remember 2020? No, not that bit. The part about eight weeks before the global pandemic fully kicked in, when 11 outrageously beautiful single people decamped their lives in the hope of falling in love in a remote villa in South Africa. You don’t? Neither do I. After a lacklustre initial outing that featured the forgettable final winners Paige Thurley and Finley Tapp, a rebooted winterLove Island hopes to once again capture the nation’s attention with a new cohort of sunkissed islanders, while back home, normal, less attractive Britons face the drudgery of January. It therefore feels like an auspicious start for this series to begin on Blue Monday, but then again the producers behind ITV2’s runaway smash hit have never been ones for subtlety.
So what’s new this time? An updated McMansion and, of course, the arrival of Maya Jama as Love Island’s new First Lady.

The announcement, in October, that Maya Jama would be the new host of Love Island was met with elation from fans across the country.
“This is Perfect,” gushed one commenter. “They couldn’t have hired someone better!!!!!!” buzzed another. Many joked that Jama is so gorgeous, the ITV2 reality show’s contestants would want to dump their partners for her.
But the new job probably didn’t come as a huge surprise to the woman whose mother has videos of her, at the age of six, declaring she would be on TV one day.
Jama, now 28, has always been determined. In interviews, she’s variously described her teenage self as “fearless” and being “tunnel-vision focused”.
But back then, life was not without its complications.
Jama was born in Bristol, to a Swedish mother and Somali father, and spent many of her weekends up until the age of 10 visiting her father in prison.

One of the organisers behind New Orleans’s annual Mardi Gras parade has removed actor Mel Gibson as its co-grand marshal, citing “significant feedback” and “threats”.
Krewe of Endymion, one of the festival’s largest parade groups, received backlash after announcing Gibson as one of their celebrity guests.
The actor has faced intense criticism in the past for making racist, anti-semitic and homophobic comments. In 2021, he came under more scrutiny after he was spotted saluting Donald Trump in a video.
“The Krewe of Endymion has received significant feedback about our grand marshall announcement,” Krewe President Dan Kelly said in a statement shared with local news.
He added: “Some of this commentary included threats that cause us great concern.
“In the best interest of the safety of our riders, special guests and everyone that welcomes us on the streets, Mel Gibson will not ride as a Co-Grand Marshal for our 2023 parade.

Kanye West has been seen out and about in public for the first time in weeks after a former business manager claimed the rapper was “missing”.
Thomas St John, who was the “Gold Digger” musician’s senior financial advisor for 18 months, is reportedly suing West over lack of payment. However, St John claimed he was unable to locate the rapper in order to serve him.
On Monday (9 January), West was spotted as he was photographed by paparazzi driving around Los Angeles with an unidentified blonde woman. The pair were then seen entering the Waldorf Astoria hotel in Beverly Hills, per the photos published by TMZ.
According to the court documents filed on 19 December, obtained by The US Sun, Thomas sought more time to serve the lawsuit papers to West.

The age rating of new horror M3GAN has divided movie fans.
Following its release on Friday (6 January), the film has become a box-office hit, making more than double its 12m (£9.8m) budget in just three days.
It’s also being noted that M3GAN, about a killer robot that looks like a female dolll, is being viewed by a much younger crowd than would usually see a horror film.
This is due to the fact that, following the release of the trailer in 2021, it became an instant favourite of users on social media app TikTok.
Scenes from the film, including one that shows M3GAN dancing her way up a corridor, have been widely shared by TikTok subscribers.
It’s now been revealed that the film, which is PG-13 in the US , was originally designed to be more graphic, but had some gory content erased in an attempt to lure in a...

Paul McCartney’s daughter, Mary McCartney, has said that her father nearly got “run over” while they were filming on the famous zebra crossing in London.
Mary, who has been a photographer for most of her career, was discussing her new documentary about Abbey Road, which is celebrating 90 years of the recording studios.
The new film, titled If These Walls Could Sing, revisits the studio that Mary spent much of her time growing up in while The Beatles were recording.
During filming of the documentary, Mary told The Mirror how she’d encouraged her father to cross the famous zebra crossing near the studio in St John’s Wood, pictured on the front cover of the Beatles’ Abbey Road album.
However, the recreation resulted in a near accident for Paul.

Kathleen Turner has recalled a potential relationship she almost had with former co-star Michael Douglas.
The actor appeared alongside the actor in three films in the 1980s. These were Robert Zemeckis’s 1984 adventure film Romancing the Stone, its sequel Jewel of the Nile (1985) and 1989 comedy The War of the Roses.
In a new interview, Turner, 68, said that her friendship with Douglas, 78, almost became romantic.
While the pair were filming Romancing the Stone in 193, Turner was single while Douglas was spearated from Diandra Luker, his first wife.
“I think we might have been falling in love,” Turner told The Guardian.
“But then Diandra flew down and made it clear that she did not consider Michael to be available.”
Turner continued: “So that ended that because I can’t get involved with another woman’s relationship. But oh my, that attention is delicious.”
When asked how close she came to dating Douglas,...

Happy Valley fans have been left confused following the latest episode’s scenes set in Sheffield.
The BBC drama’s third and final series continued on Sunday (8 January) with an instalment that ended on yet another giant cliffhanger.
However, it was where the scene was filmed that caused some consternation among fans.
*Spoilers follow – you have been warned*
The episode saw Catherine follow her sister Clare (Siobhan Finneran) and her boyfriend Neil (Con O'Neill) as they seemingly escorted her grandson to see his father Tommy Lee Royce (James Norton) in a Sheffield prison behind her back.
To follow them undetected, Catherine borrowed a car belonging to Alison Garrs (Susan Lynch), the mother of series two murderer Daryl (Robert Emms). In the series two finale, Alison killed her son and was arrested by a hesitant Catherine.

The Traitors contestant Amanda Lovett has issued an apology after appearing on Gb News last week.
The 54-year-old appeared on the channel alongside her The Traitors co-star Kieran Tompsett, and posed for a photo with presenters Tatiana Sanchez and Calvin Robinson.
Many people criticised Lovett for posing with Robinson, who has previously been called out for his stance on LGBTQ+ issues.
“I just need to apologise to my new family,” Lovett wrote in her apology on Twitter. “I am so annoyed with my agent, I had no idea what the news channel was about.
“I’m absolutely disgusted to have sat next to a person that doesn’t believe in diversity, equality and being yourself. This will never happen again.”
The Independent has contacted Gb News for comment.
In November 2022, Robinson delivered a monologue on same-sex marriages, where he said: “To me, a marriage needs a bride and groom, anything else is not holy matrimony.

Director Sam Mendes has said that “social awkwardness” plays a big part in the difficulties people have discussing mental health, as he launched his latest film in Kent.
Empire of Light is set in a dilapidated cinema in a 1980s coastal town and is billed as both a love letter to cinema and a love story between Olivia Colman’s Hilary and Micheal Ward’s Stephen.
The film also deals with mental health – Hilary has a mental illness and is based loosely on Mendes’s mother – and also race, as Ward’s character faces racial prejudice throughout the film.
Speaking on Sunday 8 January at the film’s premiere at the Dreamland amusement park in Margate, Kent, Mendes said: “I had stories I wanted to tell from my own childhood; for me the Eighties are a really vibrant and resonant time to write about.

Prince Harry has been condemned by Caroline Flack’s former agent for sharing details about his “tainted” romance with the late star in his new memoir Spare.
In a section of the tell-all book, which leaked after the memoir was accidentally put on sale in Spain five days early, Harry writes about how he met the former Love Island host, who died by suicide in 2020, at a restaurant during a night out with their mutual friend in 2009.

“Love Island” contestants heading to the infamous Mallorca villa this winter will be banned from having active social media accounts in their absence.
ITV and Lifted Entertainment confirmed on Dec. 30 that duty of care protocols have been updated for Season 9 of the reality behemoth. As part of the new rules, to protect both the Islanders and their families from “the adverse effects of social media,” participants will be asked to pause handles and accounts on their social media platforms for the duration of their time on the show.
This means that, while contestants are in the villa, their accounts will remain dormant, and nothing will be published on their behalf. This is drastically different to past seasons where accounts have remained active, with designated family members and friends given the reins to rally behind their loved ones via their social media accounts.

Love Island contestants will be restricted from accessing their social media accounts this winter season.
The upcoming change is being made in an effort to protect the contestants from the “adverse effects of social media”.
According to The Guardian, it comes in response to the latest season’s drama, which resulted in viewers bombarding Ofcom with thousands of complaints.
Typically, contestants’ accounts are managed by friends, relatives or PR teams in order to increase support and expand their brand while they’re away at the villa.
However, for the first time ever, contestants will be asked that nothing be posted to their Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter accounts on their behalf for the duration of season nine.
Instead, they will receive “guidance and training around mutually respectful behaviour in relationships”.

Appearing on Jessie Ware’s Table Manners podcast on Wednesday (14 December), Murs spoke about his experience on the show and explained that he hasn’t been in much contact with his fellow contestants.
“It was really hard,” the 38-year-old said. “I don’t know why we don’t keep in contact. And it’s a good question. I don’t know why. We just all went off on our own little paths and did our own thing.
“The Hunger Games is a really good way of putting it. We were literally thrown into a house. And it was like each week one...

“Love Island” has found its new host in broadcaster Maya Jama.
Jama, who has presented “Glow Up: Britain’s Next Make-Up Star” and used to anchor a show for BBC Radio 1, will take over “Love Island” hosting duties early next year when the series returns for its winter edition, set in South Africa. It will be the ninth series of the show.
Previous host Laura Whitmore stepped down earlier this year to pursue other projects. Fans had criticized Whitmore for her rare appearances on the reality dating show, although she also hosted spin-off “Love Island: Aftersun.”
Jama becomes the third “Love Island” host in three years after its original host, Caroline Flack, died by suicide in 2020 after she was charged with assaulting her partner.
“Love Island,” which is produced by ITV Studios-owned Lifted Entertainment, is a consistent hit for ITV, with over 269 million streams on ITV’s streaming platform ITV hub.

Maya Jama has been named the next host of the UK’s Love Island.
Jama replaces Laura Whitmore, who left earlier this year citing “certain elements of the show I’ve found very difficult that cannot be changed.”
Jama is the third host of ITV Studios-produced Love Island since its reboot several years ago and will take over from the Winter season early next year, followed by the Summer version several months later.
“Finding a new host to follow the wonderful Laura Whitmore was never going to be easy. In Maya Jama though, we have another high profile fan of the show who’ll be a great addition to the Love Island family,” said ITV Director of Reality Programing Paul Mortimer.
“Cool, charming and charismatic, I speak for us all when I say Maya will also bring a unique presenting style to the show, as did Laura and, of course,...

Laura Whitmore loves the drama. Literally. She’s just announced her exit stage left from Love Island; now the jaunty presenter is taking to the West End. We’re discussing how three years of grilling newly minted influencers on live telly equips you for the stage. “There’s definitely a similar skill set when you do live…” – she pauses, raises her eyebrows, says with a flourish – “drama. Drama in everything I do!” Fresh from crowning Ekin-Su and Davide – christened “mum and dad” by the internet for being besotted one minute, bickering the next – as this year’s champs, Whitmore is treading the boards in 2:22 A Ghost Story, in the same role that nabbed Lily Allen an Olivier nomination earlier this year. It was her husband Iain Stirling, he of the “TerrrNIGHTTTT” Love Island voiceovers, who first told her she’d nail the part. “I was like, ‘Whaaaat! There’s...
