The true story of the haunting legacy of the Höss family is revealed in documentary “The Commandant’s Shadow.”
The Höss clan was fictionally captured in Jonathan Glazer’s Academy Award-winning “The Zone of Interest.” Now, the family that inspired the disturbing saga is followed in a Warner Bros. Pictures and HBO Documentary Films feature written, produced, and directed by Daniela Völker.
“The Commandant’s Shadow” follows Hans Jürgen Höss, the 87-year-old son of Rudolf Höss, as he faces his father’s terrible legacy for the first time. His father was the Camp Commandant of Auschwitz and masterminded the murder of over a million Jews. The documentary centers on two stories, one of Auschwitz survivor Anita Lasker-Wallfisch and another of Höss recalling his own childhood in the family villa at Auschwitz. The two meet 80 years later, marking the “first time the descendant of a major war criminal meets a survivor in such a private and intimate setting,...

On Oct. 5, 2023, Variety announced its inaugural Antisemitism & Hollywood Summit. Little did the organizers know that two days later, Israel would face its worst terrorist attack in the history of the nation, with Hamas’ attack becoming the deadliest day for the Jewish people since the Holocaust. When the summit was held nearly two weeks later, its participants could not ignore the trauma of the moment, coupled with the simultaneous anger and fragility that they each felt.
To amplify the critically important message of the event — that Hollywood plays a vital role as storytellers that can fight antisemitism — Variety and Jewish Life Television have partnered to bring the summit to a wider audience. Jltv will broadcast a one-hour panel discussion with some of Hollywood’s great storytellers, titled “The State of Antisemitism.”

“It’s great to see everyone here. I wish we were meeting under better circumstances is the truth,” Matti Leshem began, introducing a panel on the state of Antisemitism during Variety’s Hollywood & Antisemitism Summit, presented by The Margaret & Daniel Loeb Foundation and Shine A Light.
Leshem, a producer and founder of New Mandate Films, began the conversation by checking in with each panel member and their emotional states following the attack by Hamas on Israel that has killed more than 1,400 civilians.
“I’m enraged. I’m furious. I’m furious at so many things. I’m furious about the loss of life,” Alana Newhouse, founder and editor-in-chief of Tablet, began. “I’m also furious at how surprised people seemed. If you were surprised at what happened, you are not following the right people. There have been people who have been talking about this slow-and-then-fast-moving train for the last 10 years.

When producer Matti Leshem first brought me the script for The Survivor, I had a visceral reaction and knew I had to make the film. In part it was because I had known members of my own family who had survived the Holocaust, and I had seen its effects on their lives. But more so because I have always had an interest in telling the stories of the great immigrant experience that made this country what it is: a true melting pot that benefited from real diversity, not just of ethnicity but of thought. The Survivor is not a Holocaust film as much as a post-Holocaust film.
The true story of Harry Haft’s survival in the camps by fighting repeated gladiatorial death matches is harrowing, but it is the effects of that life as he emerges from the trauma on which the film focuses.

Boots stormed into the living room, dust falling though the floorboards onto the Tzigel family. Jews were being exterminated, and my family was hiding in the basement of a sympathetic neighbor. Exclusive: Netflix has won a competitive auction for rights to feel-good rom-com Lost Dog: A Love Story, an adaptation of Brit journalist Kate Spicer’s memoir of the same name.
Former New Line exec Lynn Harris is producing with her Weimaraner Republic partner Matti Leshem (The Shallows). Bash Doran, whose credits include Netflix’s Outlaw King, Channel4 and Netflix series Traitors and Hulu’s The Looming Tower, is attached to adapt.
The plot will follow a down-on-her-luck woman who searches the streets of London for the rescue dog that saved her life.

Haunted by the memories and guilt over the price of survival, Haft attempts to use high-profile fights against boxing legends like Rocky Marciano as a way to rediscover a reason to live and to...

This weekend, veteran producer Denise Di Novi saw her directorial debut, Warner Bros.’ “Unforgettable,” make an underwhelming box-office debut with an estimated $4.8 million for the weekend. For most women, that would be the kiss of death: Very few women get the chance to direct studio films, and underperformance means there won’t be an encore. That won’t be the case for Di Novi.

Sony Pictures has set a November start of shooting date at the Gold Coast Studios in Queensland, Australia for Jaume Collet-Serra's new thriller "The Shallows".
The film will be eligible to make use of Australia's generous federal location spending offset scheme. Combined with a sharply weakened Australian dollar, the country is quickly attracting 'runaway productions' at the moment with another thriller - "The Nest 3D" - set to film at the same studios in October.
Anthony Jaswinski will pen the script while Lynn Harris and Matti Leshem are producing. The film is targeting a June 24th 2016 release.

While it looked back in March like Now You See Me’s Louis Leterrier would be diving into shark survival thriller In The Deep, it would seem he’s decided to stay on dry land for now. Instead, Deadline reports that Non-Stop/ Run All Night man Jaume Collet-Serra is interested in dipping his toes in the briny stuff instead. Anthony Jaswinski’s script sparked a lot of interest from the studios last autumn, and Sony was quick to snap it up. The fictional tale finds a surfer attacked by a shark at a lonely sea spot who ends up bleeding and marooned on a buoy in the ocean. Her main problem, besides the blood loss? The hungry creature is still gliding through the water around her, cutting her off from help. Producers Lynn Harris and Matti Leshem of freshly-formed Weimaraner Republic Pictures are behind the project they’re calling “127 Hours meets Jaws”.Collet-Serra,...
