Legendary director Wes Anderson won his first Academy Award at the 96th Academy Awards for his work on The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar, receiving the award for Best Live Action Short Film. Unfortunately, the director was not at the event to accept the award himself because he was occupied with his upcoming movie, The Phoenician Scheme.

With eleven feature films under Wes Anderson’s belt, we can now quickly add another. While the director’s recent batch of Roald Dahl adaptations were released as short films––so the first could compete for the Oscars––now that Anderson has indeed taken home his first Academy Award, he’s realizing his complete vision for the project.
Just after he nabbed his Oscar, Netflix announced they will release Wes Anderson’s anthology feature The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar and Three More, combining all four shorts and adding a new original song by Jarvis Cocker, this Friday on the platform. Just as another Netflix anthology release, Coens’ The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, is considered a feature, from this day henceforth let it be known The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar and Three More is Wes Anderson’s twelfth feature.

"You should be able to make a scene come alive in the reader's mind." Huzzah! Now that Wes Anderson is a certified Oscar winner, Netflix has released a brand new trailer for his four shorts streaming on Netflix. Anderson's The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar won the Oscar yesterday for Best Live-Action Short. Adapted from the Roald Dahl story, the film originally premiered at the 2023 Venice Film Festival last fall. Netflix also commissioned Anderson to make three other shorts based on Roald Dahl stories - each one an intriguing little tale with just a few characters. The most famous one (and the Oscar winner), Henry Sugar, stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Ralph Fiennes, Dev Patel, Ben Kingsley, Richard Ayoade, Rupert Friend, and Saif Mohsen. The Swan stars Rupert Friend, Ralph Fiennes, and Asa Jennings. Poison stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Dev Patel, Ralph Fiennes, and Ben Kingsley. The Rat Catcher stars Ralph Fiennes,...

In one of the biggest ironies of the 2024 Oscars, Wes Anderson — whose fans had been waiting for him to win an Oscar since The Royal Tenenbaums‘ nomination in 2001 — won his first-ever Academy Award but was unable to accept it in person. While the auteur didn’t get a chance to give his acceptance speech onstage, Netflix shared his statement on his win.
“If I could have been there, I (along with [producer] Steven Rales) would have said ‘Thank You’ to: the family of Roald Dahl; the team at Netflix; Benedict [Cumberbatch] and Ralph [Fiennes] and Ben Kingsley and Dev [Patel] … and more [of the cast and crew],” the filmmaker wrote.
Anderson’s adaptation of Roald Dahl’s The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar received the Academy Award for best live-action short film. Benedict Cumberbatch stars as the titular character, who develops clairvoyant abilities, allowing him to cheat at gambling.

The buzz around the 96th Oscars is at an all-time high! With 2023 being one stellar year for cinema, fans are enthusiastically rooting for their favorites including Cillian Murphy and Robert Downey Jr. to take home the gold. Still, amidst all the glitz and glamour of big-budget blockbusters like Oppenheimer, Barbie, and Poor Things, there’s a little gem that might just get overshadowed, and that is Benedict Cumberbatch’s short film, The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar. But this film deserves all the light to shine bright on it, here’s why!

Since we’re talking about the short films, I’ll accordingly keep this brief. Here are five reasons why “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar” will win the Oscar for Best Live Action Short Film.
1. It’s the clear standout in the category.
All five nominees are exceptional — the others being “The After,” “Red, White and Blue,” “Invincible” and “Knight of Fortune.” In a less competitive year, any one of them could easily walk away with the prize. But it’s simply too hard for anything to top “Henry Sugar.” Based on the short story of the same name by celebrated children’s author Roald Dahl, the film is seamlessly adapted to the screen with the same charm, wit and magic of the original tale. “Henry Sugar” features superb acting, exquisite costume and production design, beautiful cinematography and sharp editing. It holds an outstanding 95% “Certified Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes,...

Director Wes Anderson “wasn’t quite sure for some time” how to go about adapting Roald Dahl’s short story “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar,” he explains in a long voicemail message. But then he came upon a realization: If he wasn’t directly adhering to the original text, he didn’t really want to turn the piece into a film at all.
“I realized that it was Roald Dahl’s words that made the stories particularly interesting, that without his language I was not really as interested in adapting them,” he tells THR. “But I found a way to do them where we kept his language at the center of them.”
That strategy involved having his actors narrate the story in direct address to camera, and hiring his The Grand Budapest Hotel star Ralph Fiennes to play Dahl himself. And while Anderson ended up making four shorts out of Dahl’s stories,...

It takes multiple hands of masters, artists and filmmakers to bring a story to life, no matter the cinematic medium. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has designated categories to recognize the achievements of artists working on animation, documentary features, and shorts, an opportunity to be rewarded. However, just because you directed or produced one of these specialty films doesn’t mean these contributions will be officially named in the Oscar nominations.
To the untrained Oscar eye, it might not be obvious that despite “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” picking up a nomination for best animated feature, one of the three directors, Joaquim Dos Santos, was not among the listed nominees. It’s an arbitrary rule of the Academy that only four “teams” may be recognized in the animated feature category.

The 96th Academy Awards are less than two months away, and while Oscar nominations can sometimes be predictable, the ceremony itself often throws us curveballs. Will the Best Picture presenters read out the name of the wrong movie? Will there be any impromptu acts of violence on stage? Will someone whip out a hot dog cannon and start firing hot dogs into the audience? There's no way to be sure, but bring mustard just in case.
This year's Oscars ceremony will take place in the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on March 10, 2024, with events kicking off at 7:00 p.m. Et/4:00 p.m. Pt. Machine Media Advisors has acquired 1992 animated film “FernGully: The Last Rainforest” and its associated rights.
“FernGully: The Last Rainforest” — starring Robin Williams, Samantha Mathis, Tim Curry and Christian Slater — follows a group of fairies living in a rainforest fighting off an evil force that aims to pollute and destroy their home. Led by Jonathan Sheinberg, Susan Sheinberg and Matt Feige, Machine Media Advisors along with Moonheart Entertainment plans to revive the environmentally-conscious film in new iterations while also honoring the original.

Netflix is finally opening the doors to the newly restored Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood this week, and in a first-look preview ahead of its November 9 reopening, the streamer and its partner, the nonprofit American Cinematheque, highlighted some of the enhancements and a screening schedule through the end of 2023.
The Egyptian will reopen on Nov. 9 with a sold-out screening of David Fincher’s “The Killer,” followed by a Q&a with the director. Throughout November it will showcase a 70mm series that includes titles like Jacques Tati’s “Playtime,” Stanley Kubrick’s “Spartacus,” and Paul Thomas Anderson’s “Boogie Nights.”
Announced today were December screenings for “Days of Heaven,” “L’amour Fou,” “Don’t Look Now,” “Imitation of Life,” “Lone Star,” “It’s a Wonderful Life,” and a new Netflix film for good measure: a 70mm screening of Zack Snyder’s upcoming “Rebel Moon — Part One: A Child of Fire.”

I’d follow Olivia Colman to any project, and her latest sounds delightfully twisted. It was announced today that Olivia Colman and Dev Patel are set to star in Wicker, a romance set to be directed by Alex Huston Fischer and Eleanor Wilson.
“On the outskirts of a village by the sea, lives a Fisherwoman (Colman); smelly, single and perpetually ridiculed,” reads the official logline. “One day, fed up with her stuffy, small-minded neighbors, she commissions herself a husband to be made from wicker (Patel). In an otherwise conservative town, this unconventional romance sparks outrage, jealousy and chaos.” In addition to directing Wicker, Alex Huston Fischer and Eleanor Wilson also wrote the script, which is adapted by Ursula Wills-Jones’ short story The Wicker Husband. Production is expected to launch next year.

After a lifeless, Hall-of-Presidents-esque AI version of Wes Anderson’s visual style went viral earlier this year, it’s nice to see how the actual director crafts a story told mostly in static, theatrical frames. “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar” collects Anderson’s adaptations of four Roald Dahl short stories, but all the pieces of this Netflix short series (now streaming) are photographed in an even less naturalistic style than the director’s earlier feature this year, “Asteroid City.” The collection of shorts was an opportunity, then, for Anderson and his longtime collaborators to push what they could achieve together.
In “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar,” a company of actors narrates Dahl’s prose directly to the audience. Movement comes somewhat from Robert Yeoman’s camera but much more from details flying in and out (and off) of the sets constructed by production designer Adam Stockhausen with Matryoshka doll-level depth.

I was introduced to Wes Anderson in my early days of cinephilia. It was quite easy to get mesmerized by his distinctively aesthetic style, which happened in my case. I quickly became a fan, and in no time, I ended up watching most of his works. One thing that I particularly noticed is that as time went by, his work became more about flaunting his own style than the substance of it. My own cinematic senses also kept evolving, and with time, I sort of lost interest in Anderson’s brand of cinema. His recent works, the likes of The French Dispatch, and Asteroid City, didn’t help the case either. I still admire the aesthetics of Wes Anderson, but his cinema doesn’t excite me anymore, which is where I stood until I watched the four new shorts of Anderson on Netflix, all based on Roald Dahl’s short stories.

Plot: Wes Anderson directs an all-star collection of short films based on the work of Roald Dahl.
Review: What exactly is Wes Anderson’s The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar? When the famed director was first linked with this Netflix adaptation, everyone assumed he would be making a feature, but that’s not what this is. It’s one of four short Roald Dahl shorts Anderson has dropped on Netflix, which, taken together, roughly add up to perhaps a 70-minute (or so) anthology film.
It’s a fun experiment for Anderson and, surprisingly, perhaps his most successful work since The Grand Budapest Hotel. The centrepiece of this loose quadrilogy of shorts is The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar itself, which runs about forty minutes and teams the director with Ben Kingsley, Benedict Cumberbatch, Richard Ayode and Dev Patel for the first time (all of whom play dual roles).

Wes Anderson’s new short film is out for everyone to savor. By savor, we mean being swooned by the visuals, as the director never disappoints in that department. The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar is all about a rich man who is fascinated by a tale he comes across. This Wes Anderson adaptation of Roald Dahl’s short story of the same name is descriptive and fascinating.
As described by Ralph Fiennes as Roald Dahl in this short film, Henry Sugar is not the real name of the man. The short is based on the true story of a man who belonged to a prominent English family. Roald Dahl’s description of Henry Sugar is as follows: a rich man who was not good-looking but remained selfish. He remained unmarried because he did not want to share his fortune with anyone. As for his physical attributes, Henry was a...

“The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar” is only the second time in Wes Anderson’s career that he’s adapted another writer’s work. To put a finer point on it, “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar” is also the second time he’s adapted a single author’s work: Roald Dahl. Yet with Anderson’s first foray into streaming, via his 41-minute short film soufflé on Netflix, Anderson is tackling Dahl in a very different manner, and we do not mean simply because “Henry Sugar” is live-action.
One of the most beloved children’s authors of the 20th century, Dahl has intermittently proved a wellspring for filmmakers over the decades, sometimes to Dahl’s personal chagrin. He infamously regretted the film version of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, which couldn’t bother to even get the title right when...

The golden rule is usually, “Show, don’t tell.” And Wes Anderson is a filmmaker who — judging by the overly meticulous mise-en-scène, the highly mannered methods of his storytelling, the obsessive curating and compulsive footnoting of onscreen bric-a-brac — seems to love the structure that comes with obeying unwritten rules. All the better to break them occasionally, of course, or to at least modify your parameters in a way that suits both the material and your signature. There’s a lot of the expected Westhetic going on in The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar,...

Wes Anderson, over the years, has created a niche for himself in the cinematic space. His style of filmmaking is hard to emulate. Frankly, only he can put forward different stories using the same style of moviemaking and still manage to give the audience a unique viewing experience every time. The same could be said about his The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar. The Netflix short film, based on Roald Dahl’s short story, was released on the streaming platform on September 27, 2023, and the tale is as simple as the title suggests.
The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar is a 39-minute-long short film about the businessman Henry Sugar (this is not his actual surname) who learned the art of seeing and perceiving things without having to use his eyes after following instructions from a story he came across. He starts utilizing this skill to his benefit in the hope of...

Wes Anderson, the acclaimed director of The Grand Budapest Hotel, Moonrise Kingdom, and Fantastic Mr. Fox, has returned with his first Netflix project: The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar, a short film based on the 1977 short story by Roald Dahl. The film stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Henry Sugar, a wealthy and bored gambler who learns to see through cards after reading a book about a guru who can see without using his eyes. Henry then uses his newfound ability to cheat at casinos and donate his winnings to orphanages around the world.
The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar is a charming and whimsical adaptation that captures the essence of Dahl’s original story. Anderson’s signature style of quirky humor, colorful visuals, and symmetrical compositions is evident throughout the film, which also features a stellar cast of actors, including Ralph Fiennes as Roald Dahl himself, Dev Patel as Dr.

Wes Anderson has returned to the world of Roald Dahl with The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar, a short film set to debut on Netflix later this month, but it isn’t the only short based on Dahl’s stories that Anderson has on his slate.
The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar stars Benedict Cumberbatch as a rich man who learns about a guru who can see without using his eyes and then sets out to master the skill in order to cheat at gambling. The film recently had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival and will debut on Netflix on September 27th. It will be followed by adaptations of The Swan, The Rat Catcher, and Poison on September 28th, 29th, and 30th, respectively. Wes Anderson gave a rundown of the shorts while speaking with Deadline.
“Well, there’s one where Ralph Fiennes plays a rodent exterminator,” Anderson said.

Despite fears for the future of film in the new, seemingly disposable digital era, there are still many auteurs holding on out there in the modern movie landscape. For example, there’s Quentin Tarantino, Christopher Nolan and even Michael Bay. But few directors are as instantly recognizable as Wes Anderson. Nothing happens by accident in a Wes Anderson movie: the camera moves are perfectly choreographed — sideways tracking shots are a specialty — and the sets don’t even begin to aim for realism. Clothes are tailored, hair and makeup is scrutinized all the way down to lipstick and nail polish, and music is key, creating a subtle, sometimes melancholy and always wholly effective emotional backdrop.
Even when Anderson branched out into animation, with Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009), he took that sensibility with him.

Actor Benedict Cumberbatch is shining in great satirical light in the trailer for his new film ‘The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar’. In a mockingly sarcastic tone, the actor goes full on ‘Sherlock’ mode.
Also featuring Dev Patel, Ben Kingsley and Ralph Fiennes, the trailer mostly focuses on the self-absorbed, rich and narcissistic English aristocrat Henry Sugar, narrating his daily ins and outs in a very fest, monotonous tone, until one day he reads about something extraordinary.
Dev Patel, who is essaying the role of Dr. Chaterjee in the film, is seen treating a patient called Imdad Khan, played by Ben Kingsley. The man, even though not blind, can see without his eyes.
To showcase this new feat, Kingsley’s character wraps up his head in full ‘Mummy’ style and is able to avoid every obstacle while pulling forward on his wheelchair, inside a typical 1940’s English hospital.

Netflix has just released a trailer for the upcoming short film series by Director Wes Anderson starting with The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar. We see Benedict Cumberbatch who plays the role of Henry Sugar narrating his own story of an unmarried 41-year old who is comes across a book about a man who can see without his eyes. He then sets out to master this skill and use it to cheat and make money gambling. The trailer has the characteristic Wes Anderson style and I think it will be a fun watch. Also, starring in this film are Ben Kingsley as the man who can see without his eyes, Ralph Fiennes as Roald Dahl, Dev Patel and Richard Ayoade.

Two seconds into the trailer for Netflix’s The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar and even without the credits popping up on screen, it’s obvious this is a Wes Anderson production. Every frame – and every line of dialogue – screams Wes Anderson.
Ralph Fiennes and Benedict Cumberbatch lead a cast that includes Dev Patel, Ben Kingsley, and Richard Ayoade. Writer/director Wes Anderson produces along with Steven Rales and Jeremy Dawson.
The short film (just 39 minutes) is set to premiere on Netflix on September 27, 2023.

Even though he's already had a well-liked film in cinemas this year (Asteroid City), Wes Anderson has also been hard at work crafting a series of shorts based on Roald Dahl stories for Netflix. The first, The Wonderful Story Of Henry Sugar, lands on the streaming service in a couple of weeks and you can see the trailer below.
The short stars Benedict Cumberbatch as the titular Sugar, a rich guy who learns of a guru (Ben Kingsley) who claims he can see without using his eyes.
Sparking to the notion that this could help him win even more cash, Henry Sugar looks to learn how to do it himself.
Anderson wrote and directed the short, which also features the likes of Wa repertory company members Ralph Fiennes (as Roald Dahl – he pops up in the other shorts) and Dev Patel, plus Richard Ayoade.
The Wonderful Story Of Henry Sugar lands on Netflix on 27 September.

This one recently premiered at the 2023 Venice Film Festival a few weeks ago, earning positive reviews from most critics. Following his western sci-fi feature Asteroid City, we’re getting a whole lot more Wes Anderson this year, specifically later this month on Netflix. His latest Roald Dahl adaptation is a collection of four shorts that bring together Benedict Cumberbatch, Ralph Fiennes, Dev Patel, Ben Kingsley, Rupert Friend, and Richard Ayoade, kicking off with The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar on Sept. 27, The Swan on Sept. 28, The Ratcatcher on Sept. 29, and Poison on Sept. 30. Venice film festival: Anderson’s second Dahl adaptation is a droll 40 minutes of beautifully composed nested stories, with Benedict Cumberbatch as a gambler who learns how to beat the house
The sun-splashed Venice film festival provided an unlikely backdrop for the premiere of Wes Anderson’s The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar, an enjoyable bedtime story of sorts, converted from the 1976 tale by Roald Dahl. The guests sheltered from the heat inside the main cinema while the director moseyed on stage with a diffident shrug. What followed was a cosy, wholesome, purely soothing affair. The only thing missing was a cup of warm cocoa.
“I hope that you like it. And if you don’t that’s Ok, because it’s very short,” Anderson explained by way of introduction, setting the scene for a droll 40-minute featurette that will duly be heading over to Netflix within the space of a month.

If the recent mushrooming of A.I. recreations and YouTube / TikTok parodies of Wes Anderson’s cinema serve any purpose, it’s to show that his ongoing allure is a perfect harmony between content and form. Few talking points today are more insipid than those pegging the director as a recycler. Yes, his approach may be instantly recognizable: a penchant for symmetries, split-second sight gags, clipped exchanges, multi-plane depth, pastel-color palettes. But the cinematic universe Anderson has honed through eleven features and a handful of shorts has never been a monolith. Fragile family units––single fathers wrestling with grief and parenthood; orphans forming makeshift communities––are foundational to the director’s worldview. Those leitmotifs are tweaked with each new film and grafted onto larger, increasingly darker themes, like the specters of fascism haunting The Grand Budapest Hotel, the environmental catastrophes of Isle of Dogs, or the nuclear panic that fueled Asteroid City.

Fresh off his trip to “Asteroid City,” Wes Anderson is already back on the festival grind, bringing a new vision to Venice that plays, surprisingly enough, like “Anderson: Unplugged.” Naked and vulnerable in all the ways this year’s previous effort was girded by walls of remove, “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar” points towards a new and earnest direction for the idiosyncratic filmmaker – and if you believe that, hear me out about a bridge in Brooklyn that’s calling your name.
So yes, Anderson’s “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar” does offer more of the same in a slightly smaller dose, promising the familiar delights of impeccable artifice and arch performers clearly having a ball, and giving Anderson-heads – of which I often count myself – something to look forward to once this 40-minute short hits Netflix later this month. But given the film’s abridged runtime and its genuine playfulness,...

It’s hard to say whether Wes Anderson’s sensibility is perfectly suited to that of Roald Dahl or the other way around. Whichever it may be, the “Fantastic Mr. Fox” author’s “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar” seems to have found its ideal screen incarnation in the “Fantastic Mr. Fox” director’s hands: a fanciful 40-minute short featuring a slew of new collaborators in the helmer’s traditional head-on diorama style. At that tight running time, it’s dauntingly dense, but also ready to compete in the Oscar short category, where it would be better than every winner since Martin McDonagh’s “Six Shooter” way back in 2006.
Instead of being a one-off, it’s just the start of a larger project, with three more Anderson-crafted Dahl adaptations — “The Swan,” “The Ratcatcher” and “Poison” — coming to Netflix in late September. “Henry Sugar” lands soon after “Asteroid City” and...

Editor’s note: This review was originally published at the 2023 Venice Film Festival. Netflix releases the film in select theaters on Wednesday, September 20, and it will be available to stream on Netflix on Wednesday, September 27.
Rumor had it that Wes Anderson’s “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar” — the first of the four Netflix shorts the filmmaker has made from Roald Dahl’s anthology book of the same name — would be such a radically faithful adaptation of its source material that it would ironically feel like something altogether new. Lucky for us, that rumor was at least half true. Two-thirds true, even.
On the matter of fidelity, there can be no question. Running 37 minutes long at a full sprint from the moment it starts, “Henry Sugar” recites Dahl’s text almost completely verbatim. It starts, as all movies should, with Ralph Fiennes muttering to himself in a miniature recreation of Dahl’s study.

Nobody — outside of maybe Henry Selick — can adapt a Roald Dahl story quite like Wes Anderson, whose 2009 stop-motion animated Fantastic Mr. Fox remains a high watermark. Well, the Texas auteur is back at this year’s Venice Film Festival with another take on Dahl, this time taking on his short story The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar, about a wealthy man (played by Benedict Cumberbatch) who encounters a mystical guru (Ben Kingsley) who can see without using his eyes and endeavors to take adopt this superpower so he can make a killing at gambling.
