Justin Lin's 2016 film "Star Trek Beyond" came at a strange juncture in "Star Trek" history. Paramount had two enormously successful "Star Trek" films in 2009 and 2013, both taking the ordinarily talky and contemplative franchise into a quicker, more violent, action-packed direction. Audiences flocked to those movies, both helmed by J.J. Abrams, enjoying the fact that "Star Trek" now more closely resembled "Star Wars." One year before "Beyond" was released, however, the Disney-backed Lucasfilm released "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," the first "Star Wars" theatrical feature film since 2008. "The Force Awakens" was a massive success, and the public's itch for space action was now being satisfyingly scratched. It, too, was helmed by J.J. Abrams.
With real "Star Wars" back in the public eye, audiences no longer needed the supposed "fake 'Star Wars'" action that the new Trek films provided. "Beyond," as a result, was not as massive a hit as its forebears,...

"Star Trek Beyond" might be the best "Mass Effect" movie we ever get. The shiny Yorktown station, with city sprawls built along the surface of spinning, gravity-manipulating rings, is a dead ringer for the Citadel. The film's villain — Krall (Idris Elba) — leads an army of robots, "The Swarm," much like Saren Arterius employing the cyclopean robot Geth in the first "Mass Effect."
Krall's army destroys the Enterprise in the first act of "Beyond," leaving the crew stranded on planet Altamid. Though Krall made his home on this world, he isn't a native. No, he's really Balthazar Edison, once the (human) captain of the Starfleet ship the U.S.S. Franklin. After the Franklin crashed on Altamid in the 22nd century, rescue from the Federation never came and Edison became disillusioned.
He and his surviving crew found abandoned technology, including his Swarm army and the life-draining devices they've sustained himself with.

In 2005, actor George Takei, speaking to Frontiers magazine, described his coming out process, noting that revealing his sexuality had to be, at that late date, a political act. Speaking anecdotally, many Trekkies had known for years that Takei was gay, even though he had never had a public coming out moment. After announcing himself, Takei became an outspoken queer rights activist, speaking at public events and spreading queer news online. Sometimes his activism was even fun and cheeky; for a while, one could go to Takei's website and order rainbow t-shirts that read "That's So Takei."
Takei didn't appear in Justin Lin's 2016 film "Star Trek Beyond," as actor John Cho had taken over his 1966 role of Hikaru Sulu with the release of J.J. Abrams' "Star Trek" in 2009. Wanting to pay homage to Takei, however, the makers of "Star Trek Beyond" revealed that Sulu was raising a young daughter with his husband,...

After directing Star Trek and Star Trek Into Darkness, J.J. Abrams was ready to pass the reigns to someone else for the third movie. Justin Lin, best known for his work on the Fast & Furious franchise, was tapped to direct Star Trek Beyond, but the experience is not one he looks back on fondly; in fact, he told Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast that he actually quit the project on three separate occasions.
“I’m shooting True Detective in Ventura, and it’s a Thursday. I get a call from J.J. Abrams, and he’s like, ‘Hey man, just curious, do you like “Star Trek?’ I’m like, ‘I grew up watching “Star Trek” with my dad, it has so much meaning,’” Lin said. “[Abrams] said, ‘Would you happen to have an idea for a “Star Trek” movie?’ And I said, ‘Aren’t you in pre-production?...

The arc of the "Star Trek" films released from 2009 to 2016 is an odd one. In 2009, J.J. Abrams' "Star Trek" rebooted the film series in a new timeline, depicting a brand new cast of younger actors playing the "Star Trek" characters we all knew and loved but altered thanks to a causality/time travel conceit. That film was a massive hit, repurposing "Star Trek" into a slick, sexy action franchise. Long gone were the days of philosophical intellectualizing and tales of diplomacy. Thousands of nerdy conversations immediately began as to what constituted the "real" version of "Star Trek" and what didn't.
Abrams followed his film in 2012 with "Star Trek Into Darkness," a film that repurposed the character of Khan (Benedict Cumberbatch) previously seen in "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan." That film was also a hit but is generally not as liked as the 2009 film.

Less than 18 months before its release, Star Trek Beyond didn’t have a script, any sets, or a director. Justin Lin has been sharing his story.
It was all the way back in 2016 that Star Trek appeared on the big screen for its next feature film. This was the third movie starring the ‘Kelvin’ crew, Star Trek Beyond. And, after two Trek films in a row directed by JJ Abrams, the controls were handed over to Justin Lin.
Lin’s most successful movies comprised several Fast & Furious sequels, and he was an unusual choice on the surface to direct the film. But Lin was also a huge Star Trek fan. As such, when he got a call from JJ Abrams, offering him the chance to direct the film, there’s no way Justin Lin wasn’t taking the meeting.

At the beginning of director Justin Lin's 2016 film "Star Trek Beyond," Uhura (Zoe Saldaña) ends her romantic relationship with Spock (Zachary Quinto), leaving him bitter and despondent in his uniquely Vulcan way. As part of their breakup, Uhura attempts to return a necklace to Spock, but he refuses it. Although it belonged to his mother, he insists that Uhura keep it. As it happens, the necklace is made of a rare mineral called Vokaya, a turquoise-like stone only found on the Vulcan homeworld and harmlessly radioactive. Later in the film, the radiation from the Vokaya necklace will allow Spock to locate Uhura on a distant planet after the two had been separated in a starship crash.

Over the last decade, we’ve seen so many DC Comics projects come and go, from the big screen to the small screen, various reasons contributed to their demise. It’s sometimes hard to keep track of all the ones that were announced for development given that so many haven’t crossed the finish line as Warner Bros. has changed hands multiple times recently and not every film or series survives the new regime.

In a first for the “Star Trek” franchise, characters who are gender non-binary and transgender will appear on the third season of “Star Trek: Discovery,” CBS All Access announced on Wednesday.
Ian Alexander (“The Oa”) will play Gray, a trans man who has spent his life as a Trill planning to be a host for a symbiotic alien species that lives in different hosts over its lifetime.
Newcomer Blu del Barrio will play Adira, a non-binary character who bonds with Lt. Commander Paul Stamets (Anthony Rapp) and Dr. Hugh Culber (Wilson Cruz), the first same-sex couple in “Trek” TV series history.
“‘Star Trek’ has always made a mission of giving visibility to underrepresented communities because it believes in showing people that a future without division on the basis of race, gender, gender identity or sexual orientation is entirely within our reach,” co-showrunner and executive producer Michelle Paradise said in a statement.

While the “Star Trek” franchise continues to stir up buzz on television thanks to the CBS All Access series “Star Trek: Discovery” and “Star Trek: Picard,” the fate of the space franchise on the big screen remains an uncertainty. There hasn’t been a “Star Trek” film since 2016’s “Star Trek Beyond,” which failed to cross the $400 million mark at the worldwide box office. In a recent interview with GamesRadar+ and Total Film, Simon Pegg casts doubt on the future of “Star Trek” as a film franchise. Pegg has starred as Montgomery Scott (“Scotty”) since J.J. Abrams’ 2009 “Star Trek” reboot, and the actor even co-wrote “Beyond” with fellow screenwriter Doug Jung. Pegg says the “Star Trek” films aren’t earning enough money to guarantee a future.
“The fact is, ‘Star Trek’ movies don’t make Marvel money,” Pegg told the magazine. “They make maybe $500 million at the most, and to make one now,...

The Writers Guild of America revealed its winners for the 72nd annual edition of its awards, which were held simultaneously at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles and at the Edison Ballroom in New York City on February 1. About 15,000 WGA members vote on the best writing of the prior calendar year in an array of genres.
But beware Oscar predictors: Often a few film scripts nominated for an Academy Award are deemed ineligible. Only screenplays written under the guild’s guidelines or those of several international partners are allowed to vie for the WGA Awards. That accounts for its relatively low success rate at previewing the eventual Oscar nominees compared to the other guilds.

Quentin Tarantino isn’t sure he’s going to direct an R-rated “Star Trek” just yet, but he is sure that franchise actor and writer Simon Pegg doesn’t know any of the details about the potential tentpole. Back in 2018, Pegg said Tarantino would be faithful to the franchise and not be making the “Star Trek” equivalent of “Pulp Fiction.” Tarantino said that’s not true.
“I get annoyed at Simon Pegg. He doesn’t know anything about what’s going on and he keeps making all these comments as if he knows about stuff,” Tarantino told Deadline. “One of the comments he said, he’s like, ‘Well, look, it’s not going to be “Pulp Fiction” in space.’ Yes, it is! If I do it, that’s exactly what it’ll be.

Quentin Tarantino made news in December 2017 when he revealed he had successfully pitched an idea for a “Star Trek” movie to Paramount Pictures, but since then it’s been unclear when or if a Tarantino-directed space adventure will happen. Various “Star Trek” cast members expressed doubt about the project throughout 2018, as actors like Simon Pegg had no clue about Tarantino’s script. However, the director has a positive update for fans and calls his “Trek” movie a “very big possibility” as of May 2019.
Speaking to /Film about his new “Hateful Eight” miniseries on Netflix, Tarantino was asked about his “Star Trek” movie. The director responded, “It’s a very big possibility. I haven’t been dealing with those guys for a while cause I’ve been making my movie. But we’ve talked about a story and a script. The script has been written and when I emerge my head like Punxsutawney Phil,...

Cloverfield movies are becoming something of an event for film fans. While the first film was an okay found footage style monster movie full of mystery, it was 10 Cloverfield Lane that truly made an impact. How was the surprise of that film topped? During the 2018 CinemaCon conference in Las Vegas last night, Paramount Pictures CEO Jim Gianopulos announced at least two more Star Trek movies are in the works at the studio.
Whilst showing off their latest slate of films for 2018, the announcement came as a total surprise to the press that were in attendance. Unfortunately, for those of us wanting to know more no further information was forthcoming. Whether the current cast in the latest timeline will return is anyone’s guess, and as for a director or screenwriter, all we have are those stories that Quentin Tarantino has put together a treatment for his take in the latest saga.
At the beginning of April, Zachary Quinto revealed there were three scripts being worked on at the moment.
“First of all, I think there’s a couple of scripts. Because there was a script being written before Quentin Tarantino came up with...
