If there's one TV show that could teach another a lesson or two, it's Grey's Anatomy. Say what you will about the quality of the script and the cruel way it gets rid of characters, but you cannot deny the longevity of the medical drama hit. If it wasn't doing well, it wouldn't have been renewed for season 21. And now that it has, fans are bracing for more scandal.
Another ABC procedural, The Rookie, has only been on the air for 6 seasons, but has many fans who would take 14 more years of their favorite show in a heartbeat. Led by Nathan Fillion, The Rookie has already approached Grey's biggest problem and has already confirmed that it will deal with it in the same way.
The Rookie Season 7 Cast Changes
The good news is that The Rookie will be returning to ABC for its 7th season, which will give the show plenty of room for improvement.

The Rookie fans are going to have to wait a bit longer than usual to find out what comes next after a finale cliffhanger, but hey, at least no one’s life is hanging in the balance this time! The ABC drama will be back in the midseason as opposed to fall 2024. So is that going to affect the story being told or a potential time jump? Not according to executive producer Alexi Hawley. “I don’t think so. I found out around the upfronts when they make those decisions, but I don’t think it needs to interrupt—I mean, it’s not a cliffhanger per se,” he tells TV Insider. “We don’t have to come back the second after we left, which is kind of what we had to do going into Season 6. But it’s within a week or two that we’ll come back, time-wise.

Note: The following story contains spoilers for “The Rookie” Season 6 finale, “Escape Plan.”
“The Rookie‘s” strike-shortened Season 6 came to a close Tuesday night with the action-packed tenth episode, “Escape Plan.” Plus, it might have nudged the door open for a step forward in the fan-favorite relationship between Lucy Chen (Melissa O’Neil) and Tim Bradford (Eric Winter).
Though the duo didn’t re-spark their romance in the finale, which focused on the takedown of Monica (Bridget Regan) and Dr. Blair London (Danielle Campbell), there were still some major moments for #Chenford, as the fandom has lovingly dubbed the pair. Those moments included a heroic sequence for Lucy in the heat of action, as well as a quieter, more emotional elevator scene later in the episode, which series creator Alexi Hawley called “the most important step for the future.”
Before he looked toward what’s next, Hawley contended with the past.

You should be very afraid of what Monica (Bridget Regan) and Oscar (Matthew Glave) teaming up means for The Rookie heading into the May 21 finale. At the end of the penultimate episode, Monica made a deal with Oscar to get what she wants (information on the man who wants her dead) and agreed to help him escape from prison. “Monica and Oscar are often the smartest people in the room, which is the best thing in a villain. You want them to be scary because yes, they might be psychopaths, but at the same time they’re also super clever,” executive producer Alexi Hawley tells TV Insider. “I think that makes them really dangerous and they also, as actors really walk this great line of living in the villainy, but in a way that doesn’t feel broad or heightened. The Rookie – Photo Credit: Disney/Raymond Liu Nathan Fillion Nathan Fillion now has two long-running TV series under his belt — Castle, which ran for eight seasons, and The Rookie, which is still going strong in its sixth season. Fans of both shows will probably recognize a few similarities between the shows that extend beyond their star: Both shows have a strong mix of drama and comedy, and both have generally featured stories that wrap up neatly in each hour-long episode. Alexi Hawley was a writer and producer on Castle, and he created The Rookie; Fillion has been an executive producer on both shows. If the two of them were to work together again after The Rookie winds up his run, they told us they would most likely follow the formula that’s worked so well for them already. Maybe the show should be called The Veteran from now on?
ABC has renewed its drama series The Rookie for a seventh season in 2024-25. The police procedural starring Nathan Fillion — which passed the 100-episode mark earlier this season — continues to draw decent-sized audiences for the network, even as it has outlived its title.
The Rookie is so named because at the show’s outset, Fillion’s John Nolan is the oldest rookie in the Los Angeles Police Department. Six seasons in, Nolan’s rookie status is long gone, but he “has used his life experience, determination and sense of humor to keep up with rookies 20 years his junior,” as ABC puts it in the season six logline. Mekia Cox, Alyssa Diaz, Richard T. Jones, Melissa O’Neil, Eric Winter, Jenna Dewan, Shawn Ashmore, Tru Valentino and Lisseth Chavez also star.

Alexi Hawley’s The Rookie, a popular ABC show centered around a rookie cop navigating the streets of Los Angeles, found itself in the midst of controversy after an African-American star accused them of racism. These allegations sparked a firestorm of discussions and debates online and offline, bringing attention to the complicated issues regarding diversity and representation in the media industry.
The controversy began when Afton Williamson, who assumed the role of Talia Bishop on the show, announced in 2019 that she would not be reprising her character for the second season. And why? Because of a hostile work atmosphere that included instances of racial discrimination and “s*xual harassment”.

The Rookie has graduated from primetime newbie to veteran TV show as it reaches its 100th episode, a milestone star and executive producer Nathan Fillion says tells you, “Whatever you’re doing, you’re doing something right.” Since debuting in 2018, the ABC police procedural has sustained faithful viewership amid both internal and industrywide obstacles, including the pandemic and most recently, the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.
Fillion, who portrays John Nolan, the oldest rookie in the LAPD, credits the drama’s longevity to creator and showrunner Alexi Hawley, with whom he also worked on ABC’s Castle from 2009-16. “I think what keeps people coming back is the time they spend with these characters,” says Fillion, who teases the possibility of new romantic plotlines during season six. “Anytime you throw two different characters in a squad car together, you know you’re going to get different dynamics, and people are tuning in to that.

These days, it seems like almost everyone aspires to be famous at some point. In light of this, it makes sense that a large number of people are curious about how wealthy celebrities get. Of course, this is a topic of great interest because some TV stars have made at least $1 million a season. For example, fans of Alexi Hawley’s police procedural crime drama series The Rookie are curious to know about the income of the cast members.
And it seems that the leading face of the series, Nathan Fillion, is no ‘rookie’ when it comes to earning big bucks in the TV industry. According to Celebrity Net Worth, the Canadian-American actor, who portrays John Nolan, the oldest rookie, is said to be raking in a whopping $100,000 per episode for his work on The Rookie. Talk about a payday!

Dearly beloved, we are finally gathered for the strike-delayed return of the consistently compelling LAPD drama, The Rookie. Season 6 kicks off with a two-parter that culminates in next week’s wedding of Officer John Nolan (Nathan Fillion) and Lafd badass Bailey Nune (Jenna Dewan). (Credit: Disney/Raymond Liu) But first, there’s the matter of last May’s season-finale cliffhanger, when a comatose Officer Aaron Thorsen (Tru Valentino) coded after being gunned down by a group of masked attackers targeting the force. “He’s being wheeled into the operating room at the top of the episode,” says showrunner Alexi Hawley, adding that the situation takes a turn “I don’t necessarily want to spoil.” At the same time, there is cause for celebration. Not only does Part 2 (airing February 27) center on Nolan and Bailey’s big day, but it’s also the show’s 100th episode. Fittingly, Hawley is using...

ABC kicked off the post-strike return of its scripted series last week with the network’s three comedies, one of which, flagship Abbott Elementary, received an early Season 4 renewal just a couple of days later. Following his TCA session on Saturday and ahead of the rollout of ABC’s drama lineup next week, Disney Television Group President Craig Erwich spoke with Deadline about the effects from the dual Hollywood strikes which are the reason the new seasons of the broadcast scripted series are premiering in midseason and the launch of most new scripted shows, including ABC’s High Potential, was pushed to 2024-25.
ABC has not ordered pilots this pilot season. Erwich, who oversees ABC Entertainment, Hulu Originals, Disney Branded Television and Freeform, addressed whether the network would do pilot or straight-to-series pickups this year for other shows to join Drew Goddard’s High Potential next season. As you've undoubtedly heard by now, the Kansas City Chiefs won their second consecutive Super Bowl on Sunday night.
And, of course, Taylor Swift was on hand to cheer on her boyfriend, Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce.
Super Bowl ratings have been on the rise in recent years, and the combination of a hard-fought overtime game and the world's most famous entertainer no doubt delivered a massive audience for CBS.
For Swift and Kelce, it was the culmination of a fairy tale romance, and for the good people of Kansas City, it was the perfect ending to a storybook season.
But if you're a fan of neither football nor somewhat bland pop melodies, you might be growing a little tired of the Traylor saga.

‘The Rookie: Feds’ Creator Alexi Hawley On Drama’s Demise: It Wasn’t Just Due To The Strike, He Says
Creator Alexi Hawley expressed regret on Saturday about the cancellation of The Rookie: Feds, an ABC procedural that he said was a victim of economics and “consolidation in the industry.”
While appearing on the dais for The Rookie at the Television Critics Tour, Hawley, who created Feds with Terence Paul Winter, said some people tried to blame the show’s demise on the strike but “it’s a bigger conversation than that.” The ratings for The Rookie: Feds were modest but were trending in a positive direction before the series starring Niecy Nash-Betts was canceled after one season in November.
“A lot had to do with the forces that led to strike … the consolidation of the industry, the economic impact of the streaming wars have had on different companies,” Hawley said. “I do feel it was not a creative decision. It was a business decision. I can’t argue with that.

The Rookie: Feds and The Good Doctor spinoff, The Good Lawyer, will not move forward at ABC as the network canceled both projects. Following its first season run The Rookie: Feds will not be back, and The Good Lawyer will not make it to air after initially being teased in a trailer earlier this year. As fans of The Rookie: Feds know, the series starring Niecy Nash-Betts is a spinoff of Alexi Hawley‘s The Rookie which is led by Nathan Fillion. Premiering in 2022, Feds was first teased on the flagship series when Nash-Betts’ Simone Clarke was introduced in a two-part event during the fourth season of The Rookie. (Credit: ABC/Raymond Liu) Similar to Fillion’s Officer John Nolan, Simone Clarke was the oldest rookie in the FBI Academy when she was introduced to audiences. ABC’s The Rookie: Feds has been canceled after one season.
A decision on whether the network would renew the freshman drama led by Niecy Nash-Betts was delayed for months amid the ongoing dual WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, both of which have recently concluded. The ratings for The Rookie: Feds were modest and were trending in a positive direction, as Deadline reported in May.
The Rookie: Feds, the only ABC singular-lead hourlong broadcast series headlined by a Black actor, was not the breakout hit the original Rookie was but delivered respectable ratings that could’ve been enough to secure a second season had it not been for the dual strikes.
Nash-Betts starred as Simone, a former guidance counselor living her dream of becoming an FBI agent, making her the oldest rookie in the agency. Taking on the role came with challenges as many doubted her capabilities, mainly her boss,...

ABC has firmed up its post-strike needs.
The Disney-owned broadcast network has canceled The Rookie: Feds and opted to pass on The Good Doctor spinoff, The Good Lawyer.
Both shows had been on hold since May as ABC, like other networks, took a wait-and-see approach to its needs once both the actors and writers strikes concluded.
With actors poised to join writers back at work in the coming days, ABC now has a firm picture of its schedule for what remains of the 2023-24 broadcast season. The Writers Guild and SAG-AFTRA strikes wiped out the September start and with production expected to resume in the coming weeks, ABC ultimately had no need for a second season of Feds, starring Niecy Nash-Betts. The upcoming Superman movie has already gotten a head start in some of its casting, adding Rookie star Nathan Fillion to the fold. But some worry that Fillion’s Superman: Legacy obligations will impact his ABC series.

Fillion has focused most of his time on the hit ABC series The Rookie. The show is a crime drama with Fillion playing a middle-aged character from Pennsylvania starting a new career as a LAPD police officer. The show has pulled in notable ratings for the network for its five seasons, and was renewed for a sixth season not too long ago.
But recently, Fillion’s schedule got a lot busier when DC studios head James Gunn announced that he was cast in Superman Legacy. Fillion will be playing the Green Lantern superhero Guy Gardner in the upcoming film.

However, there was a big caveat about the renewal: The show wouldn't be on ABC's fall schedule.
Thanks to the WGA strike, ABC elected to banish all of its returning scripted series until midseason and released a fall schedule comprised of unscripted offerings.
It was the best decision because then the network wouldn't have to promote shows returning in the fall if there was a chance they wouldn't be ready.
With the WGA strike raging on and the high risk of a SAG-AFTRA strike on the horizon, there's a good chance production won't get back underway for several months.
Things took another turn this week when it was revealed that series star Nathan Fillion had booked a role on James Gunn's Superman: Legacy.

Could Nathan Fillion‘s role as a big-screen Green Lantern could put another red light in front of The Rookie Season 6?
Already, The Rookie had been pushed to a “midseason” premiere as opposed to its usual fall bow, in acknowledgment of the Writers Strike that began on May 2 and is showing no signs of ending soon.

ABC still has some decisions to make on its scripted slate.
The network has yet to make final calls on renewals for comedy Home Economics and The Rookie: Feds as well as The Good Lawyer, a backdoor pilot spinoff of The Good Doctor.
It comes after ABC passed on four of its pilots: Anthony Anderson-fronted Public Defenders and Ellie Kemper-led Keeping It Together, which is a remake of British comedy Motherland, as well as dramas The Hurt Unit, starring Melissa George and Ben McKenzie, and Judgement starring Sex/Life’s Sarah Shahi.
Deadline understands that ABC is unlikely to make all of these decisions until the writers strike is over and the future of the fall season is clearer. A decision on Home Economics may come first out of the three.
