We’re definitely not in Kansas anymore: American Idol decided to change things up with the way it markets the new season by having judges Katy Perry, Luke Bryan, Lionel Richie and Ryan Seacrest take a trip down the proverbial Yellow Brick Road to kick off the 22nd season.
Excuse us, we mean the Golden Ticket Road.
In this newest promo for the show’s Feb. 18 return, Perry dons a Dorothy-like outfit as a narrator says “once upon a time, four superstars went on a long journey far from home.” Seacrest then invites them to walk down the Golden Ticket Road to search for the “best singers in America.” They walk by Burleson, TX — hometown of season one winner Kelly Clarkson — along with Checotah, Okla, Carrie Underwood’s place of birth, among others.
“What an incredible journey,” says Richie. “I can see brighter things ahead.”

UFA’s long-serving CEO Nico Hofmann is stepping down from his post and becoming Chairman of Fremantle’s German powerhouse, with former Rtl and exec Sascha Schwingel replacing him.
Hofmann has been chief exec of the Deutschland 83 and Generation War maker since 2017 but has been with the company for more than a quarter of a century. In that sense, his exit from the CEO post marks the end of an era.
Hofmann had joined in 1998 to set up TeamWorx, which is now UFA Fiction, and went on to produce many of Germany’s best-travelling drama series. Notably Deutschland 83 was the first from the country to air on a U.S. network.
His replacement, Schwingel, was most recently Deputy Chief Content Officer of Rtl Deutschland, overseeing the likes of Rtl Television, Rtl+ and Vox, where he was previously CEO. He is well known to Hofman having started his career at TeamWorx.

Global production and distribution powerhouse Fremantle has revealed a strategic alliance at the Venice Film Festival with Israeli-based Ibi Investment House, which involves the launch of a 150 million euro ($163 million) fund to bankroll a portfolio of premium scripted TV and film projects.

Despite all the rumormongering that a certain “mean judge” wouldn’t return, American Idol has announced that Katy Perry will once again join Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie for a seventh season on ABC. Ryan Seacrest will continue to emcee.

The Banff World Media Festival isn’t expected to feel the heat of the Canadian wildfires next week, Variety has confirmed.
Organizers say there’s currently no harmful air pollution present in Banff, which is in Alberta, on the western side of Canada, and that the annual TV festival isn’t making any changes to its scheduled programming, as of press time on Friday.
Banff is set to kick off on June 11 and will run through to June 14. The event takes place at the Fairmont Banff Springs hotel, a scenic spot nestled in the Rocky Mountains and overlooking Lake Louise. Most of the festival takes place indoors, though its annual “Banff BBQ” takes place off-site.
That event is being transformed into the “Paramount+ Lodge Party” this year, and is unlikely to include open fires given the high fire risk.

The role sees the exec assume overall responsibility for Fremantle’s vast global entertainment production, development and acquisitions teams, and with them hit franchises including Got Talent, Idol, The X Factor, Too Hot to Handle, The Masked Singer and I Can See Your Voice. Llinares’ hiring comes less than two weeks after Fremantle promoted Christian Vesper to CEO global drama, overseeing the company’s extensive portfolio of scripted production companies.
A seasoned executive producer, Llinares has a long history with Fremantle. He was previously head of Thames/Syco co-productions in the U.K. and was the original showrunner on The X Factor and Britain...

Fremantle has appointed Andrew Llinares as director of global entertainment, taking over for Rob Clark who will retire at the end of February after 20 years with the company.
Llinares will be based in London and report to Group CEO Jennifer Mullin in the new role, although he’s hardly new to the Fremantle family. Llinares previously served as head of Thames/Syco co-productions in the UK and was the original showrunner for “The X Factor” and “Britain’s Got Talent” when the shows first launched in the UK in 2004 and 2007, respectively. He’s been living and working in the US since 2011, and was an EP and showrunner on the US version of “The X Factor” before becoming EP and showrunner on “Dancing with the Stars” in 2018.
“I am thrilled that Andrew has agreed to take on this hugely important role within Fremantle,” Mullin said in a statement. “Our Global Entertainment...

Former Dancing with the Stars and The X Factor EP Andrew Llinares has replaced the retiring Rob Clark at Fremantle.
Llinares takes on the Director of Global Entertainment post at the super-indie vacated by Clark next month, who is exiting after two decades with the company. He takes on responsibility for Britain’s Got Talent firm Fremantle’s global entertainment production, development and acquisitions teams.
Llinares has spent the past five years as EP of Dancing with the Stars and Deadline revealed his departure last March. He oversaw numerous seasons including the all-athletes season 26 and the 30th, which featured one of the most exciting finales in the show’s lengthy history.
Llinares was the original showrunner on The X Factor and Britain’s Got Talent UK in 2004 and 2007 respectively, spent some time EPing the U.S. X Factor from 2011 and used to head up co-productions for Fremantle label Thames and Simon Cowell’s Syco.

There was a time when Fremantle was shorthand for the American Idol company. ABC’s iconic entertainment brand was undoubtedly a coveted calling card, but it also served to constrain perceptions of a company that harbored a grander vision.
Peter Bose, the preeminent Danish drama producer behind shows including Wallander, knows this better than most. He recalls a conversation he had with CAA in 2013 after telling his agent he wanted to sell his company, Miso Films, to Fremantle.
“Fremantle? Who is Fremantle within scripted?” came the reply. “We couldn’t actually argue, you know,” Bose remembers. A decade on, the acquisition of Miso was a brick in the foundations of Fremantle delivering more than 100 dramas last year.
Fremantle is now firmly established in the scripted game. It was the company that transformed Sir Kenneth Branagh into Boris Johnson for This England. Its Nordic noir hit Face to Face, made by Miso,...

Like their characters, soap operas never truly die. After broadcasting its “series finale” just this July, long-running Australian soap “Neighbours” is already coming back, and has found a new United States and United Kingdom home in Amazon Freevee.
Amazon announced the news on Thursday, revealing that production on the revival will begin in Australia next year, with a targeted premiere date for the second half of 2023. Series stars Stefan Dennis, Alan Fletcher, Ryan Moloney, and Jackie Woodburne are confirmed to return to the revival, which will premiere for free on Amazon Freevee, Amazon’s free ad-supported streaming service, in the UK and U.S., as well as Prime Video in New Zealand and Canada. After airing what was thought to be its final episode earlier this year, Neighbours is set to make a shock return to screens in 2023.
The Australian soap was cancelled in February after Channel 5 decided to stop airing the show in the UK. When production company Fremantle was unable to find another channel to carry the programme, the show was cancelled altogether due to a lack of funding.
To mark the end of the programme, several notable actors from the show’s 36-year history returned to say goodbye, including Kylie Minogue, Jason Donovan, Margot Robbie, Holly Valance and Guy Pearce.
The final episode drew in 2.5 million viewers – a significantly higher number than usual.
However, an announcement made on Thursday (17 November) has confirmed that the show has been picked up once again by Amazon Freevee, with new episodes to air next year.
