The Marvels Box Office: Becomes The Biggest Failure Of 2023; Decoding Its Numbers. (Photo Credit – IMDb)
Marvel Cinematic Universe, aka the MCU, has been struggling at the box office for the past few years, especially after Avengers: Endgame. The Marvel Studios is one of the highest-grossing studios, but last year, it had very poor box office results due to The Marvel’s overall collections. It has suffered a loss with a massive margin. Keep scrolling to get all the deets.
The MCU movie featured Brie Larson once again as Captain Marvel, aka Carol Danvers. Besides Larson, the movie had Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan, aka Ms Marvel, and Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau. Samuel L Jackson also returned as Nick Fury. South Korean actor Park Seo-Joon made his Hollywood debut with this Marvel flick, but that too could not save the MCU movie’s sinking ship.

Disney normally finds itself at the top of the box office rankings, thanks to its ownership of well-known franchises like Marvel and Star Wars, but last year was an exception. Recently, Deadline claimed that Disney was involved in four of the top five box office bombs of 2023. The company had numerous setbacks that caused its fortunes to plummet. However, The Marvels was one of the most surprising misfires.
The Marvels
Who could have predicted that Brie Larson’s last MCU outing would end in a financial letdown, causing more of a tremor than even the Dceu’s The Flash?
Yes, you read that right. As unbelievable as it may seem, Nia DaCosta’s flick endured a staggering net loss of $237 million, outdoing the Ezra Miller starrer. Speaking about the latter, it even sprinted away from the spotlight with a $155 million shortfall.

With major franchises such as Marvel, Star Wars, and Pixar under its roof, Disney typically finds itself on the top of the box-office heap, but that wasn’t the case last year. The company had more than a few failures which found its fortunes falling, and Deadline reports that four of the five biggest box-office bombs of 2023 belonged to Disney.
First up, and least surprising, is The Marvels, the Captain Marvel sequel starring Brie Larson, Iman Vellani, and Teyonah Parris. As its predecessor grossed $1.1 billion, it was hoped that the sequel would equal that number, but the film turned out to be a bomb of epic proportions, grossing just $206 million worldwide. The film reportedly found Disney taking a loss of $237 million. Yikes.

In March 2019, Marvel Studios regained the film rights to X-Men, Fantastic Four, and Deadpool after Disney acquired Fox for $71.3 billion.
These characters are set to be incorporated into the MCU. In October 2020, the ‘X-Men’ and ‘Fantastic Four’ films were labeled as “Marvel Legacy films” on Disney+. Notably, Patrick Stewart reprised his role as an alternate Professor X in ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,’ and Kelsey Grammer returned as Beast in ‘The Marvels.’ ‘Deadpool & Wolverine,’ will bring Deadpool and Wolverine, played by Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, respectively, into the MCU continuity. As time passes, it becomes more evident that we are approaching the reboot. Therefore, we’ve compiled everything we know so far.
The studio is said to be seeking a mix of drama and comedy
Very little is known about the upcoming project’s plot, but the studio has recently ramped up its search for a writer.

Marvel fans have been eagerly awaiting more female-led superhero flicks to highlight the powerful women of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in a world where male superheroes predominate. However, recent reports have suggested that the future of such projects could very well be at risk, making fans frustrated and disappointed.
Teyonah Parris’ character Monica Rambeau would have had her own solo MCU series if Brie Larson’s The Marvels had not been met with such dismal critical reception. Although Monica Rambeau made a fleeting appearance in Nia DaCosta’s The Marvels (2023), the character made her official debut in Disney+’s WandaVision.

When the MCU began in 2008 with ‘Iron Man,’ nobody foresaw it becoming the colossal, beloved, and highly lucrative cinematic universe it is today. Traditionally, comic books were the main reference point for anything related to superheroes.
However, as movies and TV shows gained more popularity than the comics themselves, live-action adaptations began to significantly influence comic books. Some stories were even rewritten, drawing criticism from older fans and comic enthusiasts.
One notable example of the MCU’s impact on comics is Kamala Khan, also known as Ms. Marvel. Originally, she gained her powers as an Inhuman after exposure to Terrigen Mist. However, her Disney+ show introduced a new storyline, revealing her powers to be the result of genetic mutation, overshadowing her Inhuman origin.

When the MCU started back in 2008 with the release of the first ‘Iron Man,’ no one could imagine that it was going to snowball into the biggest, most popular, and most profitable cinematic universe imaginable.
For decades, the main point of reference regarding everything related to comic books were naturally – the comic books themselves, but as soon as the movies, and later, TV shows became more widely consumed than the source material itself, live-action adaptations started affecting comics to a big extent, some stories even being rewritten, which older fans, fans of the comics, criticized to no end.
The most infamous case of MCU affecting comics is Kamala Khan aka Ms. Marvel. For most of her existence as the character she was known as Inhuman, being exposed to Terrigen Mist this is how she acquired her powers. Then came along her Disney+ show which decided to give her a mutant origin.

Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel is a movie star. "The Marvels" has been cited as another sign of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's fall from dominance, but everyone loves young actor Iman Vellani as this spunky heroine. /Film even named Kamala the best movie hero of 2023 and proclaimed her the future of the MCU.
Of course, Kamala comes from Marvel Comics and was co-created by G. Willow Wilson, Sana Amanat, Stephen Wacker, Adrian Alphona, and Jamie McKelvie. The comics made a bizarre move of synergy in 2023; between Kamala's Disney+ show "Ms. Marvel" and the theatrical run of "The Marvels," she heroically dies in "Amazing Spider-Man" #26 (by Zeb Wells and John Romita Jr.), published in May 2023.
Wells' "Amazing Spider-Man" isn't exactly a fan-favorite (the stink of breaking up Peter and Mj has carried across his run) and this was a low point. It was the cheapest of cheap melodrama and Kamala perished while pulling guest star duty.

Nia DaCosta is in talks to direct the second part of the upcoming “28 Years Later” trilogy from Danny Boyle and Alex Garland.
Previously, she directed and co-wrote “The Marvels” starring Brie Larson, Teyonah Parris and Iman Vellani, and “Candyman,” a contemporary spiritual sequel of the 1992 cult horror classic of the same name for Universal and Monkeypaw Productions.

Exclusive: While Danny Boyle is set to return to direct 28 Years Later, the first film in a new trilogy based on the iconic horror films he helped launch, Sony Pictures is already lining up the helmer for the second installment. While a deal hasn’t closed, sources tell Deadline that Nia DaCosta is in talks to direct, with Boyle, original writer Alex Garland, Andrew Macdonald and Peter Rice producing along with Bernie Bellew. 28 Days Later star Cillian Murphy will exec produce.
While exact dates are unknown, sources say the plan is for Boyle to direct the first film later this year, with the second film shooting immediately after, which is why Sony is moving fast to lock in that second director. This way, the directors can get on the same page about where they see the story going while also bringing their own unique visions for each film. Garland will pen each installment.

Marvel’s Avengers can be described as many things, but a successful game is not one of them, and the live service structure that Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics went with is one of the culprits. Failing to achieve the same success as the live-action films from the MCU, the game had the potential to improve where the films lacked, but it turned out to be a major disappointment.
Marvel’s Avengers Could Have Utilized Ultron Better Than the MCU
James Spader made his first and last appearance as Ultron in Avengers: Age of Ultron, and a version of the character was teased in Marvel’s Avengers.
The game was originally conceived with the idea of constant updates and content support from developers and an overarching story meant to span multiple seasons. Ultron was meant to appear as a villain, and actor Jim Meskimen had already recorded dialogue before the untimely cancellation.

The downside to the now-inoperative Marvel Television was that its offerings were exhaustively inconsistent in quality. Would you get a mature, nuanced examination of topics like systemic corruption, religious faith, and personal trauma like in "Daredevil"? Or would you get a clumsy mashup of "Succession"-style dynasty drama and white savior tropes like in "Iron Fist"? One could never be too sure. But while the lows were especially low, the highs also tended to be higher than the Marvel Cinematic Universe's films.
Funnily enough, that trend has only continued since Marvel Television was restructured and folded into Marvel Studios. The McU's Disney+ shows have been all over the board so far, with the added wrinkle that most of them are woven deeper into the tapestry of the franchise's greater mythology and, as such, are harder for the McU's movies to ignore -- as we saw when "The Marvels" had to...

Jujutsu Kaisen has reached the peak of popularity, and there are hardly any anime that come close to it. It is going through a crucial phase, with the King of Curses becoming more potent. While the positive reasons are mainly related to the anime and manga, the negative reasons are caused by the mangaka. During Disney+ Day 2021, it was confirmed that something new was in the making, a new animated show called ‘Marvel Zombies’ for Disney+. Zeb Wells is writing and producing it. The show was imagined as a spinoff of the ‘What If…?’ episode called ‘What If… Zombies!?’.
At San Diego Comic-Con 2022, they said the show will be for mature audiences (rated TV-ma) and will start airing in 2024. Zeb Wells said in an interview on October 8, 2022, that the first season will have four episodes. On November 28, 2023, Iman Vellani said she was joining the cast. She’ll be the voice of Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel, who’s one of the main characters.
We don’t know much about the series plot, except that it won’t directly follow the famous comic storyline. But it seems like there will be a lot of violence and action. Fans are excited because it could show many different things on screen.

On the heels of What If…? season one’s warm reception, Marvel Studios head of streaming Brad Winderbaum knew that now was the time to pursue his longtime dream of reviving the beloved Fox Kids show X-Men: The Animated Series. The series aired from 1992 to 1997, and Winderbaum, as executive producer, is on the verge of releasing X-Men ’97, which picks up right where the original series left off as the classic X-Men characters are forced to find a way forward without the leadership of Professor Charles Xavier.

Iman Vellani’s performance as Kamala Khan, aka Ms Marvel has captivated fans everywhere, and went above and beyond by playing Marvel’s Avengers which could be the most painful and harrowing gaming experience a Marvel fan can endure. The game was a massive disappointment and not just in the eyes of fans but as a game in general, but it did give Vellani something to work with for her live-action portrayal.

Marvel’s Spider-Man was said to be the first part of Marvel’s shared gaming universe, Iron Man jumpstarted the whole Marvel Cinematic Universe back in 2008 and has elevated the genre since; and Insomniac Games aims to replicate the same success through this format. It didn’t take long for other studios to take these iconic characters and give them their own video game.

Iman Vellani’s Ms. Marvel was only recently introduced to the MCU but she is already the star of her own standalone show and was a vital part of the ‘The Marvels.’ It seems that Ms. Marvel will be a massive part of the MCU going forward since the project focusing on Young Avengers, her own initiative in the MCU, is in active development.
Ms. Marvel will obviously be a part of the team down the road, but speaking to ComicBook.com she expressed something altogether different when asked which team she would like to join within the cinematic universe:
On the big screen? X-Men. I don’t think that’s a bad answer. I think the X-Men is so cool, and it really just marks her as a legitimate mutant and all the naysayers can no longer say nay,
Her comment is a reference to some upset fans who are refusing to accept that Ms.

The Marvels was the latest entry of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and it gave the spotlight to three powerful heroines: Captain Marvel, Monica Rambeau, and the young up-and-coming hero of New Jersey, Kamala Khan also known as Ms Marvel. The film had a mixed reception, but it served its purpose to show what this trio can bring to the table, and after her solo series on Disney+, Iman Vellani has been a fan favorite.
The character is fairly new, only a decade old but has caught the attention of comic book readers because of her religion, unique power set, and origins. There was a window of opportunity to establish the character in other formats like gaming, and Square Enix with Crystal Dynamics gave the world Marvel’s Avengers.
