“Saturday Night Live” will score a hat trick” at Saturday’s Directors Guild of America Awards. In our latest predictions, Don Roy King has 16/5 odds to . bag his third straight win in the variety series category for the Adam Driver-hosted Season 44 premiere.
The veteran “SNL” director is also the reigning champ in the corresponding Emmy category, but not for the same episode; he won the Emmy for the Donald Glover episode from Season 43. The Season 44 premiere featured Kanye West as the musical guest and Matt Damon‘s debut as now Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh in the cold open.
King is ahead of Paul Pennolino (“Last Week Tonight with John Oliver”), the team from “Who Is America?”, Jim Hoskinson (“The Late Show with Stephen Colbert”) and Paul G. Casey (“Real Time with Bill Maher”). He’s defeated Pennolino, Hoskinson and Casey the past two years.

In a self-moderated panel on Tuesday, Jimmy Fallon and a collection of his creative team sat down on the “Tonight Show” stage at 30 Rock to drive home their mission statement: to have fun and provide “an escape” for their audience during a particularly turbulent time.
“There’s a lot of sad news we could talk about,” Fallon acknowledged. But what he hopes “The Tonight Show” can do is “help people get away from it.”
The Fyc Writers Guild panel also included director Dave Diomedi, Digital Media Director Julie Harrison-Harney, writer Arthur Meyer, head writer Amy Ozols, and producers Mike Dicenzo, Gerard Bradford, and Katie Hockmeyer. All emphasized that they view “The Tonight Show” as a true variety show, complete with creative musical acts and the parlor games that first made Fallon’s version of “The Tonight Show” stand out. “Saturday Night Live” will make it back-to-back wins at Saturday’s Directors Guild Awards. In our latest combined odds, Don Roy King is the 1/3 favorite to win the variety series prize for helming the Jimmy Fallon-hosted episode of “SNL” from last season. King won the Emmy in September for the same episode.
The veteran “SNL” director is ahead of “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver”’s Paul Pennolino (5/1 odds), “Full Frontal with Samantha Bee”’s Andre Allen (18/1 odds), “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert”’s Jim Hoskinson (50/1 odds) and “Real Time with Bill Maher”’s Paul G. Casey (100/1 odds).

Jimmy Fallon, Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson, Tariq "Black Thought" Trotter and director of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon Dave Diomedi came out to the Paley Center in New York City Wednesday to discuss the NBC program, The Roots and the state of comedy at large. While the group is on national television five nights a week, they were able to share a few stories that aren't as widely known to the public. Here are five key moments from An Evening with The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon: 1. Barack Obama Didn't Rehearse "Slow Jam the News" Number 44 slow jammed the news twice during his eight years as president. Jimmy said Barack was a lot looser and willing to do...

The 68th annual Directors Guild of America Awards have just concluded with Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu winning the guild’s top prize for his brilliant work on The Revenant, officially making him the new frontrunner for the Best Director Oscar (the winner here goes on to win the Oscar about 90% of the time).
This is quite a welcome and monumental event, as it makes Inarritu the first director ever to win the DGA’s Feature Film award twice in a row. However, what’s more pressing is what this means in the context of the awards race. As I noted earlier, in the instances where the PGA, DGA, and SAG have split their top awards, and the DGA winner is popular enough to go on to win the corresponding Oscar, their film has also gone on to win Best Picture. Not only would this make Inarritu the first director to win...

Birdman director Alejandro González Iñárritu has scooped the top honour at the Directors Guild of America (DGA) Awards.
Iñárritu won Best Feature Film Director ahead of nominees for American Sniper, Boyhood, The Grand Budapest Hotel and The Imitation Game.
In his acceptance speech, the director claimed that filmmaking is not as hard as it used be, stating: "To make a good film we all know is war, and we have just to survive it. If this is considered a great film, it doesn't have anything to do with me. It's a miracle."
Laura Poitras picked up the award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Documentary for Citizenfour.
On accepting the award, she said: "This is an incredible time to be a documentary filmmaker. People are doing work that is incredibly groundbreaking and risk-taking."
Lisa Cholodenko claimed the TV movie or miniseries prize for her two-part HBO drama Olive Kitteridge.

"Birdman" helmer Alejandro González Iñárritu won the Directors Guild of America's (DGA) award for best direction of a motion picture Saturday night, effectively firming up his film's march into the Oscars later this month. The Michael Keaton comedy also took top honors from both the Producers Guild and the Screen Actors Guild. With the DGA prize it joins films like "Argo," "The King's Speech," "Slumdog Millionaire," "No Country for Old Men," "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King," "Chicago," "American Beauty" and "Apollo 13" as the only films to pull off the hat trick. Only one of those, "Apollo 13," failed to win the Best Picture Oscar. So it's more or less settled, right? I confess, coming into the industry awards phase of the season, I didn't expect "Birdman" to dominate like this. And maybe that was ultimately its secret weapon. Everyone had their eyes on "Boyhood.

Woot woot! My pick to win Best Director at the Oscars took home the Feature Film trophy at the recently concluded Directors Guild of America awards. And it's truly deserving! Cuaron defied gravity, yes pun intended, to create "Gravity," a movie grounded in sci-fi realism that many directors before him (including James Cameron) were saying that it would be hard to do. But Cuaron did it, and did it extremely well! So hats off to "Gravity" and Cuaron's direction!

Updated: Gravity does not seem to be falling on the awards circuit. Alfonso Cuarón walked away with the top honor at the Directors Guild of America Awards Saturday night in Los Angeles, beating out Martin Scorsese, David O. Russell, Paul Greengrass, and Steve McQueen.

But Gravity was not the work of just one mind, and no one knows that more keenly than Cuarón. “Directing is about the work of your collaborators,...
