Oscar-winning French actress Juliette Binoche is the new president of the European Film Academy.
The Efa board on Thursday said they voted unanimously to name The English Patient and The Taste of Things star to succeed Polish director Agnieszka Holland (The Green Border) as president.
Binoche’s appointment will be put to a vote by Efa members and, assuming she receives majority support, she will take over as president on May 1, 2024.
The French star will be only the second female head of the Efa, after Holland, who took over the role in 2021, succeeding German director Wim Wenders.

French actress Juliette Binoche (“The English Patient”) will be the next president of the European Film Academy Board, succeeding Polish director Agnieszka Holland (“Europa”) in the honorary role. Holland was the first female president of the board.
Binoche was unanimously proposed by the board members after Holland decided to step down. Following a formal approval process, which historically has been a mere formality, Binoche’s appointment will officially begin on May 1, 2024. The presidential role is primarily symbolic.
Holland, who served as chairwoman of the board until 2019, became president in 2021, succeeding German director Wim Wenders. Holland plans to fully dedicate her time to making films.
Holland’s “Europa” won the Golden Globe and was nominated for an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay. Her 2023 film “Green Border” won the Special Jury Prize at Venice International Film Festival.

Hayden Panettiere is speaking out about her time on the 2010s TV drama Nashville, saying it was “traumatizing” to play a character whose personal troubles echoed her own. “I felt like I was acting out my own life,” Panettiere says in a new interview with The Messenger. “Straight from the beginning, it was like, I’m dating a football player, [and then] Juliette dates a football player. And then they turned her into an alcoholic. Then they turned to her leaving her daughter and going to this crazy [place] in Europe, and it was very obvious.” Panettiere, who dated NFL player Scotty McKnight from 2011 to 2012, has been open about her struggles with addiction and depression. She told People in 2022 that she “almost couldn’t live without” opioid drugs and alcohol earlier in her life — and that between those addictions and the severe postpartum depression she experienced following the birth of her daughter Kaya,...

Lifetime can strike gold when it comes to reuniting stars of yesteryear, from series to films for productions like this, especially Christmas films.

They've also succeeded in bringing us little reunions every holiday season.
But reuniting and bringing together some of the most iconic women from soaps was no easy feat, and it made for a holiday film that left viewers squealing in glee whether they were soap fans or not.

“Ultimately, this is a mystery show, grounded on characters in a world that we could believe in,” declares “Silo” creator and showrunner Graham Yost. For our recent webchat he adds, “What is real and what isn’t? Who controls the knowledge? And then the big thing for me is, why is this happening? Why are they living underground? That kept me going through the three books,” he says, adding with a knowing smile, “buy the books, but don’t read them until the entire television series is over, because we’re going to veer in some ways and stay close in others. But mostly we want to get the fun of revealing the answers to the mysteries!” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

With great success comes great expectation, and I doubt that Daniel Kokotajlo’s Starve Acre will quite live up to the favorable notices of his first feature, the BAFTA-nominated Apostasy. The story, which has been adapted from a novel by Andrew Michael Hurley, concerns Richard (Matt Smith) and Juliette Willoughby (Morfydd Clark), who have recently moved from the city to the comparatively desolate Yorkshire Dales. At the village fair, their son Owen, who has complained of hearing the voice and whistles of a sprite named Jack Grey, blinds a horse with a sharp stick and is duly sent to a psychiatric hospital. Shortly after his consultation, which includes a nightmarish brain scan, he dies suddenly at the family home, paralyzing Richard and Juliette and further enlivening the spirit that so tormented him.
It is here the film takes its boldest, most bewildering turn. After Owen’s death, Richard commits himself...

Arsene Lupin is one of the most popular fictional characters, with uncanny similarities to Sherlock Holmes. Written by Maurice Leblanc, Arsene Lupin is a gentleman thief who is widely known for his masterful disguises. However, the popular Netflix thriller series Lupin, released in 2021, is not based on the life story of this fictional character but follows an ordinary Frenchman, Assane Diop, who is inspired by Lupin’s story and his cunning techniques to carry out the thefts. Assane, with the baggage of a troubling past, has only one motive in life, which is to vindicate his father, Babakar Diop, and unmask the real culprit, bringing him to justice.
Spoilers Ahead
Part 1 Recap: Who Is Assane Diop?
Assane’s father, Babakar Diop, had found a job as a driver for an extremely arragoant and French business man named Hubert Pellegrini. It was quite evident from the beginning that Hubert was racist,...

While we are yet to understand how the Silo runs and who the Judicial is, the mystery of what lies outside the Silo is still more urgent. Juliette reached the waters at the bottom of the digger, intending to find out whatever George believed was under the water. Meanwhile, Sam has just handed Holston’s note to Mayor Ruth, nominating Juliette as the next Sheriff. Silo Episode 3 shows whether Juliette wants to be the Sheriff and if she is worthy of it.

Coming-of-age films are a dime a dozen. We see them all of the time. But rarely do they come with such style and skill, such as with the upcoming film, “Scarlet.”
As seen in the trailer, there’s so much style and beauty in the way “Scarlet” is shot. The film feels like a throwback to the films of decades ago. The story follows a young girl, Juliette, who is trying to find her place in the world.

Italian director Pietro Marcello made a splash at the 2019 Venice Film Festival with the Jack London adaptation “Martin Eden.” That film about an idealistic man’s sentimental and moral education at the turn of the 20th century, distributed in the U.S. by Kino Lorber, more or less introduced the talents of heartthrob Luca Marinelli to Western audiences. Now, Marcello is partnering with the U.S. distributor once more, this time turning his camera on the story of a woman’s coming of age, with “Scarlet.” The cast includes Raphaël Thiéry, Louis Garrel, and newcomer Juliette Jouan. IndieWire shares the exclusive trailer for the film, which premiered at the 2022 Cannes Directors’ Fortnight, below.

While the cultural phenomenon known as the Hunger Games franchise may seem like a thing of the past to some, the popularity of the movies during their brief time on Netflix this year begs to differ. Even though all four Hunger Games movies were only on Netflix for the month of March, the first two movies spent weeks in the top ten with millions of views totaled by the end of the month and on TikTok, #hungergames has 8.2 billion views and counting. With the prequel movie The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes also set to come out later this year, it’s not surprising that there’s been a reawakening of this series’ passionate fanbase.
If rewatching The Hunger Games has left you wanting more compelling dystopian stories, and you can’t wait until November for The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, then I highly recommend checking out the Apple TV+ series Silo.

Silo is a breath of fresh air in a sea of post-apocalyptic dramas.
Silo Season 1 Episode 1 was a perfect introduction to the place our heroes call home -- whether they like it or not.
Silo Season 1 Episode 2 dialed up the intrigue because the two characters that carried the weight of the drama in the premiere were dead.
Fortunately, though, Allison, Holston, and George's actions shaped the trajectory of the second episode, solidifying Apple TV+'s latest effort as must-see TV.
Allison and Holston's relationship was adorable, but how wrong things went for them as they tried to conceive a child is tragic.
It's hard not to think about where things would have gone for them had they managed to bring a child into the world.
Then again, we wouldn't have this compelling drama if everything was fine and dandy inside the Silo.
Allison's curiosity allowed a fine display of acting from Jones,...

This article contains spoilers for the first two episodes of Silo.
The Apple TV+ series Silo is set in a post-apocalyptic world where humanity has been forced into an underground silo because the outside world has become toxic.
The silo’s inhabitants don’t know how the world became toxic or who built the silo that became their salvation, nor are they allowed to ask questions about it. People are permitted to explore the outside if they demand it, but there are no take-backs once the request has been made. The sensors that show the barren wasteland on the other side of the airlock do a pretty good job of deterring even the more curious citizens of the silo, but there are still those who question whether what they see outside is reality.

Review: Post-apocalyptics stories are bordering on burnout. After decades of zombies and plagues and reaching for creative twists on the genre, we are getting to the point of animal-human hybrids (Sweet Tooth), blind tribes (See), and even deadly fungus spores (The Last of Us). While the creativity in those aforementioned series is impressive, the genre seems to be petering out.

Rebecca Ferguson stars in Apple TV+’s ‘Silo’
The world inhabited by the characters in Apple TV+’s Silo is claustrophobic, devoid of vibrant colors, and incredibly bleak. Based on Hugh Howey’s book series, Silo’s dystopian future finds humans forced to live underground to survive. The surface world is uninhabitable, and the thousands who call the vast underground silo home have learned to adapt to their confinement and exist peacefully in this insulated environment.
Episode one sets up the rules the citizens must abide by, including restrictions on pregnancies. Possessing items from the past (historical artifacts) is strictly forbidden, and what information exists about the history of the silo is kept under lock and key. Punishment is swift and severe for anyone who disobeys the rules. Yet some members of this confined society are quietly skeptical about the limited information they’re being fed.

There’s a new sheriff in town, but it’s multiple hours of Apple TV+’s Silo before she takes office. Before that, not one but two of the sci-fi show’s 10 episodes explore the legacy of Juliette Nichols’s (Rebecca Ferguson) beloved predecessor, Holston Beckett (David Oyelowo), and the nature of the underground shelter they call home. Such is the time deemed necessary to acclimate viewers to the inner workings of this world, a vertical concrete structure housing 10,000 people who have no knowledge of what’s going on above beyond what they see of the ravaged, toxic landscape projected onto window-like screens throughout the silo.

Silo, the new drama series coming to Apple TV+, is based on a series of books by Hugh Howey about a post-apocalyptic world in which the last people on earth are living in an inverted silo, a 144-levels-deep subterranean city.
The citizens of the silo are kept complacent, and questioning the nature of the silo or what is outside is forbidden. Merely uttering the words that you want to go outside gets you thrust from the community altogether to brave the outside and, it seems, to die there.
Silo offers a vast and engaging story that, shockingly, seems to be more relevant today than it was when it was written and which should create vibrant discussions about truth and control.
