Jay Baruchel doesn’t give up easily.
The actor spent a decade trying to get “Random Acts of Violence,” his twisty look at a serial killer whose murder spree is inspired by comic books, made. Part of the problem, Baruchel admits, is that he wanted to direct a straight-up horror film, which puzzled backers who associated the actor with his roles in comedies like “This is the End” or “Tropic Thunder.”
The hesitation may also have been related to the fact that “Random Acts of Violence” seems equally interested in unsettling its viewers by examining the moral quandaries surrounding all the on-screen bloodletting, while raising questions about the responsibility artists have when it comes to depicting cinematic carnage. The central character in the film, the writer of a comic book called Slasherman, discovers during a book tour that he may have triggered a fresh wave of murders. Jay Baruchel writes and stars in a finger-waggingly pious and pointless story about violence in entertainment
The Canadian actor Jay Baruchel – a Judd Apatow regular and the voice of Hiccup in the family animation How to Train Your Dragon – has directed an exasperating serial killer-slasher. He brings to the genre a script with brain cells spilling out of its victims’ smashed skulls and the acting is a cut above – performed in an easy improvy naturalistic style that feels very Apatow. But inexplicably Baruchel and his co-writer Jesse Chabot staple on a finger-waggingly pious and pointless message about violence in entertainment.
Jesse Williams stars as Toronto comic book artist Todd, who’s struggling with the final issue of his mega successful R-rated franchise Slasherman. The series is based on actual events, half a dozen grisly unsolved murders that took place along a stretch of Interstate 90 in the late 80s. To get his creative juices flowing,...

Horror movies can easily get lost going down a path of just being a gore-fest or just being one big metaphor. The most successful efforts in the genre manage to do more than one thing, or at least aren’t completely simple to pin down. Jay Baruchel’s second outing behind the camera, the horror flick Random Acts of Violence, manages to do this with aplomb. Not only is it gnarly and gory, it’s peddling a message, one rooted in the creative process. Almost a decade after he first began to try to bring this story to the screen, it’s now coming out on Shudder and is well worth your time. For Baruchel, as well as fans of the genre, it’s worth the wait. The film is a horror outing, one that seeks to ponder what the real life consequences can be when life imitates art. Here,...

On its most superficial horror flick level, Jay Baruchel’s latest directorial effort Random Acts of Violence works. Co-adapted with Jesse Chabot from Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti’s 2010 graphic novel of the same name, the story sees Slasherman comic creator Todd (Jesse Williams) hitting the road from Toronto to New York City with his wife (Jordana Brewster’s Kathy), assistant (Niamh Wilson’s Aurora), and business partner (Baruchel’s Ezra) in advance of a Comic-Con appearance. The reason they’ve decided not to fly is because Kathy is on a research mission for a new book she’s writing about the real “Slasherman’s” victims along 1-90. Todd’s run of glorifying the terrifying mystique of this killer has reached its end, so it’s only right to honor those lost upon his fictional death.

Random Acts of Violence is an indie horror feature from director Jay Baruchel and writer Jesse Chabot. The film is slated for a Summer release on Digital and on Shudder. The film stars: Jesse Williams (The Cabin in the Woods), Jordana Brewster and Simon Northwood. Called a "labour of love" by Baruchel, this title focuses on a road trip and a crazed fan. To show later in July, the film's official poster and Red Band trailer are here. Baruchel has talked about the script-writing process. He says of the script for Random Acts of Violence and the process of writing the script has taken close to seven years. Both writers are perfectionists and they took their time to"rebuild or script again and again." Focusing on the characters, horror fans can preview what Baruchel and Chabot have in store for them, this July 31st. On July 31st, Random Acts of Violence...

Jay Baruchel has played a role for every consumer age bracket: The Canadian actor’s lengthy resume includes everything, from voicing an awkward teen in Dreamworks’ hit animated franchise “How to Train Your Dragon” to playing a 20-something looking for love with surreal consequences in “Man Seeking Woman” to, well, himself in “This Is the End” in 2013, alongside longtime friend and sometimes-collaborator Seth Rogen.
For his latest film, “Random Acts of Violence,” premiering at Fantastic Fest on Sept. 19, he took up not only acting but also screenwriting and directorial duties, his second turn at the helm — In 2017, Baruchel directed “Goon: Last of the Enforcers,” the sequel to hockey comedy “Goon,” both of which he co-wrote and acted in.

Stars: Seann William Scott, Alison Pill, Marc-Andre Grondin, Liev Schreiber, Wyatt Russell, Kim Coates, Elisha Cuthbert, Jay Baruchel, Callum Keith Rennie, Jonathan Mark Cherry | Written by Jay Baruchel, Jesse Chabot | Directed by Jay Baruchel
Back in 2011, Michael Dowse’s Canadian sports comedy Goon was a minor hit with critics, but only ended up taking a modest $12m at the U.S. box office. Evidently, however, the film has since picked up something of a cult following, which explains the presence of this somewhat belated but nonetheless entertaining sequel that reunites the majority of the key players.
The directorial debut of actor Jay Baruchel (who co-wrote and co-starred in the first film), the sequel finds sweet-natured but dim-witted ice hockey bruiser Doug “The Thug” Glatt (Seann William Scott) still playing for his beloved Halifax Highlanders and now married to former girlfriend Eva (Alison Pill), who has just announced that she’s expecting.

The long-awaited sequel to Goon arrives in UK cinemas. It ain't essential, but it's fun...
“I’m not as tough as I used to be.”
Goon: Last of the Enforcers, the sequel to 2011s Goon, is a film about the world changing. The new owner of the Halifax Highlanders has expectations of the team and he’ll bring new players in to achieve them. The new kids coming into the league are something else; all-rounders, and some of them can really fight. Bruiser Doug Glatt’s home life is pulling him away from the game, and his body can hardly keep up with it anymore. So what exactly is a displaced hockey goon supposed to do?
There’s a weird tragedy bubbling beneath the surface of Goon 2, but it’s never really dealt with. The subject of head injuries and being so drawn to and entertained by the violence that causes them,...

Bottle Rocket (Wes Anderson)
Wes Anderson’s feature debut, the slyly comedic Bottle Rocket, positions its heroes, three young wannabe criminals with an eye for small-scale robberies, as blind innocents, lost in the unfamiliar world of adulthood. As part of his 75-year plan, Dignan (Owen Wilson) forms a gang, consisting of himself, Anthony (Luke Wilson) who’s fresh out of a voluntary psychiatric hospital, and Bob (Robert Musgrave) who...

The best part of hockey comedy Goon is its ability to never forget itself. Jay Baruchel and Evan Goldberg didn’t write it (based on Adam Frattasio and Douglas Smith’s non-fiction book) like your usual sports film where winning or losing was the goal. They instead brought to life a soft-spoken, compassionate guy whose only talent isn’t laying guys out on the ice like his bloodthirsty fans believe. No, Doug Glatt’s (Seann William Scott) calling is as protector for his family, friends, and teammates. He joined the Halifax Highlanders to provide a spark as well as a formidable presence that would lend his more talented linemates peace of mind and confidence. Victory was never about securing a championship, it was reminding his team what hockey meant beyond the scoreboard.

Strap those hockey pads back on because the final Canadian trailer has landed for Goon: Last of the Enforcers, the follow-up to, you guessed it, Goon. After the hardest hitter in the game, Doug Glatt (Sean William Scott) is told by a doctor he should never play hockey again, he enters the real world of — *shudders* — the 9-to-5. However, when Doug stumbles upon an old rival (Liev Shcreiber), he begins training to reclaim his team and his glory. Be careful, though, this trailer contains swear words, so slap some ear muffs over the kids before you put this one on ice.

Back in 2011 Seann William Scott starred in the Canadian-American sports comedy “Goon,” directed by Michael Dowse and written by Jay Baruchel and Evan Goldberg. The show must go on for the Halifax Highlanders. Almost six years on from the release of cult sports comedy Goon, Jay Baruchel and Seann William Scott are reteaming for Goon: Last of the Enforcers, and today brings forth our first look at the latter returning to the ice as hardened enforcer Doug Glatt.
And make no mistake, the gloves are off. Bringing together the Highlanders for another round of in-your-face action that involves more brawls than actual minor league ice hockey, Last of the Enforcers heralds the directorial debut of Baruchel, after he penned the original Goon script with Evan Goldberg. Story details remain few and far between, even after today’s teaser trailer, though we do know that there’s plenty of new personnel on board for the 2017 sequel, including screenwriter Jesse Chabot.

2011's R-rated raunchy-sports-comedy-with-a-heart-of-gold Goon is the latest comedy to be getting a sequel. And while law of averages are not in its favor when it comes to comedy sequels, Seann William Scott, Jay Baruchel, Liev Schreiber and Alison Pill are all set to return and throw around hockey pucks as much as they do certain four-letter words in Goon: Last of the Enforcers. Joining them inside the ice rink, however, is Elisha Cuthbert. The "24" and Girl Next Door star joins the movie to play Pill's outlandish sister. Pill plays Eva, the love interest to rising hockey star Doug "The Thug" Glatt (Scott). This new movie finds Doug and his team, Halifax Highlanders, working with a variety of new players during a pro lockout. So it looks like Cutherbert isn't the only newbie in the Goon universe, and with production to begin on June 21 in Toronto under producers David Gross, Jesse Shapira and Jeff Arkuss,...

There is a small, but devoted and vocal contingent, who believe the 2011 Canadian hockey flick, "Goon," is a modern sports comedy classic. And while I am not one of those people, there are enough of them that it has turned the talk of a followup into a reality. Read More: Review: 'Goon' Is A Middling Sports Comedy Elevated By A Surprising Turn By Seann William Scott Jay Baruchel will get on the ice to co-write (with Jesse Chabot), make his directorial feature debut, and star in "Goon: The Last Of The Enforcers." Seann William Scott will return to reprise his role as Doug Glatt, whose skills on the ice have less to do with puck-handling and goal scoring, than with using his fists. The new film will find Glatt back in action with the Halifax Highlanders when there's a pro hockey lockout, presumably leading to more unhinged on-ice action.

There has been a slight change in plans as Jay Baruchel will instead make his directorial debut with what we now know is called Goon: Last Of The Enforcers.Baruchel has been a driving force behind the Goon films from the start, and he’ll add directing to co-writing (with Jesse Chabot) and acting in the movie this time.Seann William Scott is back as hockey enforcer Doug “The Thug” Glatt for a story that sees his team, the Halifax Highlanders playing alongside new team members during a lockout. Scott has been busy training again in both fighting and skating for the film. He told Reddit users in an Ama that “if everybody...

Only after this year's fantastically funny new series "Man Seeking Woman" did I ever appreciate Jay Baruchel presence. The Fxx series, easily the best new show I've seen this year (although I haven't seen "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt" or "Bloodline" yet), is highly inventive and way more inspired and clever than your average 20-something-based sitcom, and Baruchel carries the show with as much stride as an awkward lead character can. Now converted to Baruchel's on-screen work, I'm curious to see what he can do behind the camera. In addition to co-starring in the 2011 hockey comedy Goon, he also helped pen the screenplay beside Evan Goldberg, and with a sequel to the film in the works, Baruchel is pushing for more involvement. As he returns to this sequel, Goon: Last of the Enforcers, as a writer alongside Jesse Chabot and actor, reprising the loud, foul-mouthed best friend Pat, he will also...

A follow up to 2011's sports comedy Goon is in the works and Jay Baruchel is set to helm the project.
Baruchel will not only direct Goon: Last of the Enforcers but co-write and reprise his character, reports The Hollywood Reporter.
Goon follows Doug (Seann William Scott) - a bouncer who becomes a hockey player after beating an opposing player during a game he attends with his best friend Pat (Baruchel).
Scott also returns to his role as his team will "reunite with a host of new players during a pro lockout".
The first film was directed by Michael Dowse and written by Baruchel and Evan Goldberg (This Is the End). Baruchel is co-writing the sequel with Jesse Chabot.
Baruchel currently stars in Fxx's Man Seeking Woman, which premiered in January. It was renewed for a second season in March.

Now this is good news. THR is reporting that the sequel to Goon, the awesome cult hockey movie starring Seann William Scott, will be directed by actor Jay Baruchel, making his directorial debut with this film. Baruchel is a major proponent behind the entire film, as he's co-writing the screenplay with Jesse Chabot, and also starring again as Seann William Scott's character's friend Pat. Of course they've got Seann William Scott back as violent hockey player Doug "The Thug" Glatt and they're already gearing up to start filming in June in Toronto. I've got a good feeling about this, it all sounds quite promising, especially with Baruchel. It was also revealed the title of this follow-up is Goon: Last of the Enforcers. Bring on the hockey fights. The film will be produced by David Gross, Jesse Shapira, and Jeff Arkuss of No Trace Camping and André Rouleau of Caramel Films.

I think I nailed him.
Jay Baruchel (This is the End) is set to make his directorial debut on the long-awaited sequel Goon: Last of the Enforcers. He co-starred and co-wrote the 2011 hockey comedy with Evan Goldberg (The Interview) and is penning the script for the sequel alongside his writing partner Jesse Chabot. Goldberg will return as executive producer.
The first film centered on Sean William Scott‘s Doug “The Thug” Glatt, a bouncer-turned-minor league hockey player with a great set of fists. Scott is set to reprise his role says THR “in a story that sees his team, the Halifax Highlanders, reunite with a host of new players during a pro lockout.”
I really liked the first movie and can’t wait to see what they have to show us this time around. Baruchel is a solid comedic actor and writer so you can expect something great again it’s safe to say.

You wouldn't quite call it a sleeper hit (it didn't even reach $10m at the box office), but there's been talk of a sequel to the hockey comedy Goon ever since its release back in 2011. It's been a while since we heard anything, but the film's star Seann William Scott has just revealed that Goon 2 is suddenly underway, with shooting set to start in a couple of months time."I’ve been fight-training for the past month," Scott told Reddit, "and next month in May I start working with an Mma fighter, and then some skating (obviously, a lot of skating). We start shooting Goon 2 in mid-June, and if everybody does their jobs and we execute the amazing script that Jay Baruchel and his co-writer wrote, the fucking movie will be wicked.”That co-writer, if this is still the same set-up that Baruchel was talking about in 2012, is Jesse Chabot,...

Jay Baruchel gives an update on Goon 2, and the plan is to get filming in 2014...
Jay Baruchel is an increasingly in demand man. With his latest film, This Is The End, doing comfortable box office for Sony, he's got the small matter of the RoboCop remake/reboot due next year as well. But beyond that, he's also working on a sequel to the really rather grand Goon.
Goon, you might recall, is an ice hockey comedy featuring incredibly violent moments and Seann William Scott. Often in combination with one another. If you've not seen it, and your stomach doesn't mind the odd tooth flying, it's worth checking out. And Baruchel, chatting to the Lethbridge Herald, has revaled that work is ongoing with the planned Goon 2.
"We're furiously typing away", he said, with he and co-writer Jesse Chabot once more on scripting duties.

What’s going on with Summit’s Exorcism Diaries? The script for the film, which was originally penned by Jay Baruchel and Jesse Chabot, has a new writer attached: Barbara Marshall. Marshall got her first break after writing 2012’s Black List script Peste.
While the plot of The Exorcism Diaries is being kept under wraps, we do know that the film is inspired by the book The Real Story Behind The Exorcist by Mark Opsasnick.
The original pitch, via HeatVision, goes a little something like this:
“[The story] centers on a reporter searching for the truth behind the most famous exorcism in history, but soon discovers that the real-life story is not quite finished. As a result, she finds herself in harm’s way of the same supernatural entity that she is chasing.”
Exorcism Diaries is being produced by Roy Lee, Sonny Mallhi and Doug Davison.

1.) When Rupert Wyatt bowed out of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes last week, I knew it wouldn't be long before a list of potential replacement directors leaked out -- especially since Fox's strict timetable leading up to a May 2014 release was what scared Wyatt off in the first place. Matt Reeves (Cloverfield) is reportedly on the top of a list that also includes J Blakeson (The Disappearance of Alice Creed), Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (28 Weeks Later) Jeff Nichols (Take Shelter), Juan Antonio Bayona (The Orphanage) and Guillermo del Toro. That's quite the interesting list of both big names and emerging talents. Coupled with this news was a report that Reeves had given up on the Twilight Zone project he'd been attached to for almost a year, citing "scheduling conflicts." Smells fishy, right? Warner Bros. has placed an "open director assignment" on The Twilight Zone, so we'll have to wait...

One of the more pleasant surprises of the year was Seann William Scott’s turn in the Jay Baruchel and Evan Goldberg-penned hockey comedy “Goon.” The Canuck laffer has spawned something of a cult, with the movie being a favorite in some corners of the internet, in addition to it doing strong business north of the border. Now it looks like we’ll get to see the continuing adventures of the Halifax Highlanders on the big screen. According to PlaybackOnline (via Cinema Blend), a script is in the works for a sequel to the film and Baruchel confirmed the story on Twitter. Although Goldberg co-wrote the first film with Baruchel, here he’ll only be involved as a producer, ceding co-writing duties to associate producer Jesse Chabot. "Please know this: Goon is pretty close to sacred for all of us involved and we would only be entertaining the idea...

The hockey comedy Goon was one of this year’s pleasant surprises. Starring Seann William Scott, Jay Baruchel and Liev Schreiber, the film earned fairly positive reviews and most of the people I talked to thoroughly enjoyed it. So, it should come as no surprise that Baruchel is already chatting up a sequel.
The young actor is set to pen the script along with Jesse Chabot, who was the associate producer on the first film. Furthermore, Evan Goldberg will return as a producer and Michael Dowse will return to the director’s chair.

The indie-film version instantly became one of the best sports movies in recent memory and arguably the best hockey film since Slapshot. The Canadian actor Jay Baruchel, who co-wrote and starred in the 2011 film has revealed that he has started work on a sequel to hockey comedy Goon.
Baruchel returns to write the script with Jesse Chabot and director Michael Dowse will also return to direct the second installment of the last year’s indie hit.

Goon, which you can still see on Netflix Instant, was a gongshow with just enough heart in its helmet. So there will be more blood on the ice. This is the kind of sequel that makes sense. The first film was a complete story, but clearly the creators have more to say and more to explore, and they’ll be able to do so with control over the movie and support from a healthy fan base. What’s more, it could signal a highly visible brand of success for an indie distributed through a reputable company (Magnet Releasing) being able to build a...
