Jessica Pegula didn't open very well, but she rallied in time to cruise past compatriot Claire Liu at the 2023 Korea Open in Seoul.
Jessica Pegula has played some really solid tennis lately, making her way to the Japan Open final recently. The American failed to win the trophy there but is within one match of making the final again after besting Liu in Korea.
The match was a very interesting one because Pegula struggled greatly with her opponent at the start of it. Liu is a really good mover who always pushes you to play one more shot, and it can be tough to overcome at times. As good as Pegula is, she's quite a streaky hitter with consistency that can be all over the place.
Liu used that to take the opening set even though she failed to serve it out at 5-3. What did get it done was...

Before he became one of Shaw Brothers’ foremost fight choreographers, Lau Kar Leung used to work as an extra besides choreographing the old black and white Wong Fei Hung series. Together with fellow choreographer Tang Chia, he would spend many years working for director Chang Cheh until they had a fallout while doing “Marco Polo”. So it was only natural that he would eventually evolve into a director during the early 70s when the martial arts films were in full swing. Furthermore, after Shaw Brothers Studio stopped making films, he would continue to choreograph, direct and even act in films like “Drunken Master II” with Jackie Chan and Tsui Hark’s “Seven Swords” in 2005.

Chinese actress Zhou Dongyu, who is in Cannes with Anthony Chen’s Un Certain Regard title The Breaking Ice, has had a fairytale career trajectory.
Although she had no desire to act, she was plucked from obscurity by Zhang Yimou when still a high school student in 2010, and became one of China’s most respected young actresses, with a string of award-winning films.
She agreed to star in The Breaking Ice as soon as Chen called her and before he’d even written the script. She’d worked with him before on short film The Break Away, part of Neon-produced anthology The Year Of The Everlasting Storm, which Chen had directed remotely during the pandemic.
“He called and said he wanted to shoot a film in China, quite quickly over the winter, because he had a month free when another project was postponed,” Zhou tells Deadline. “I agreed immediately...

China’s film market is recovering, now the country’s cinemas and borders are open, and more films are being released, but producers and investors are playing it safe with a limited range of movies, said speakers at Bridging The Dragon’s annual Cannes Marche panel.
In the first session, ‘Is China Back?’, Chinese director-producer Lu Chuan (City Of Life And Death) said: “We have lots of talented and brave young filmmakers who want to make films – the problem is how do we encourage them to make more different types of films, and not only focus on comedies and family dramas.”
One of the biggest trends at the China box office since cinemas reopened has been big-budget comedies, usually with top stars – films like the Detective Chinatown franchise and this year’s Godspeed, which grossed $136M (RMB959M) – have helped drive the country’s box office recovery. China’s box...

“Run the Burbs” star Andrew Phung is widely considered to be one of Canada’s biggest sneakerheads. But his former “Kim’s Convenience” co-star Simu Liu is no sneaker slouch either, having famously rocked some ultra-rare Jordans in “Shang-Chi”. So whose kick game reigns supreme?
If you ask Phung, it’s not even a debate: Kimchee all the way.
“Oh yeah,” says the actor when asked by Et’s Carlos Bustamante if his shoe appreciation is above and beyond Liu’s. “I think he would even admit to that. Look, Shang-Chi is wearing some Jordan 1s in the movie, I respect that. But even he would admit to it.”

‘From’ Season 2, Episode 4 Recap & Ending, Explained: Was The Truth About Sarah Revealed At The End?
The sudden slow-paced narrative progression that season two of MGM+’s From adopted since its third episode continues in this one too, and the world exploration gets halted as a result. In the previous episode, newcomer Kelly’s devastating death shook up all the key players, and Boyd found a strange connection between his past with the names of the unfortunate couple. Tabitha sees weird premonitions and disfigured kids after her return from the underground maze, and both events seem related in an unknown way. However, the biggest discovery of the previous episode was Kenny discovering Sarah in the basement of the town church. Boyd hadn’t told a soul that in his journey to the wilderness to find an escape, he was accompanied by Sarah, and given her past actions, things were bound to get heated up.

Lewis Tan is the face of a big ongoing franchise, playing Mma fighter turned world-saving hero in "Mortal Kombat," which currently has a sequel in the works. It turns out that Tan very nearly landed another huge gig around the same time: Shang-Chi in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Indeed, had things gone another way, it could be Tan suiting up as Shang-Chi and not Simu Liu. And it sounds very much like Tan was in the running right until the very end.
Tan spoke about the experience to Entertainment Tonight around the time that 2021's "Mortal Kombat" was coming out. He explained what it was like landing the role of Cole Young, a character created specifically for the movie. Here's what he had to say about it:
"That was a crazy moment. I had just gotten back from Japan. I just lost a crazy job - a really, really high-caliber level job.

Actor Ke Huy Quan says portraying an American born Chinese in the upcoming series of the same name “scared the hell” out of him.
Hollywood has had considerable feats of Asian representation this year ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’s’ historic Oscar wins ‘Beef’ and on May 24, ‘American Born Chinese’.

Monday night’s Met Gala at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art was a bonafide lovefest for Karl Lagerfeld, whose work is showcased in the Costume Institute’s new exhibition, Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty, opening Friday.
With some Met Gala themes, the sartorial choices can be a tad all over the place, and decidedly rooted in causing a social-media frenzy. While the latter was certainly true with several looks (hello, Jared Leto), the overall vibe Monday evening was rooted in paying tribute not only to the many, many designs Lagerfeld produced during his six-decade career but also to the elements that defined the man himself and the design codes he happily embraced within the iconic houses he famously oversaw.

What does it mean to be a hero? In a Disney show or movie, it usually means superpowers or suits or several rings — the external vectors for an inner chivalry that was there all along. It’s the kind of heroism that pops up across Marvel, Star Wars, and numerous other Disney features and series, and which fuels Kelvin Yu’s “American Born Chinese,” based on the graphic novel by Gene Luen Yang.
The series opens with a daunting title card detailing the celestial war afoot: The bull demon (Leonard Wu) wants to destabilize the jade emperor, but the monkey king (Daniel Wu) defends the throne with his magical staff staff jingo bang — which has gone missing. The monkey king pursues the thief in the heavenly realm during the first scene, packed with the lush visuals and deft action that Cretton deployed in “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

In just a few short years, Simu Liu has gone from Canadian sitcom actor to international movie star.
Despite how big his fame grows or how many achievement he racks up in Hollywood, for Canadians, he’ll always be ours. In celebration of Asian Heritage Month, let’s run down just a few of the many reasons everyone loves Simu Liu.
1. He Manifested His Own Destiny
It’s not everyone who can make a dream come true with a simple tweet, yet Simu Liu made it happen. Way back in 2014, before he was even cast in his breakout role in “Kim’s Convenience”, Simu Liu issued a tweet targeting Marvel, asking when the studio was going to get around to introducing a superhero of Asian descent. Five years later, he was announced as the star of Marvel’s “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings”.
Hey @Marvel, great job with Cpt America and Thor.

All These Sons
With his first documentary Minding the Gap, Bing Liu turned the lens on himself and his friends to examine the domestic violence around them. One of the more human documentaries of the last decade, Liu’s film looked at Rockford, Illinois, and the racial and social elements that affect young men and women in this decent-sized city. With his newest effort, All These Sons, Liu and collaborator Joshua Altman focus on Chicago’s South and West Sides, following young Black men at Iman and Maafa, two community organizations aiming to keep these men away from the gun violence that surrounds them. Once again the resulting film bursts with empathy, built-in trauma, and forgiveness. – John F. (full review)

New Delhi, April 23 (Ians) Most parents are concerned about potential long-term risks from the Covid-19 vaccine for their children and some fear they’ll be held responsible if their child gets ill after the jab, a study has revealed.
Despite efforts to increase the vaccination rate among children, many remain unvaccinated due to parental concerns about the vaccine’s long-term effects and anticipated responsibility, aids the study published in the journal Pediatrics.
The Dornsife Center for Economic and Social Research (Cser) at University of Southern California (USC) found that 45 per cent of parents of children are concerned about potential long-term risks while 18 per cent fear they’ll be viewed as responsible if their child gets sick after the vaccination.
Ying Liu, research scientist at Cesr and the study lead, explained that “parents’ hesitancy may be partly driven by apprehension about the vaccine, stemming from its rapid development and the use of newer techniques.

Alice Birch adapts David Cronenberg’s 1988 film “Dead Ringers,” swapping the male twin gynecologists with female ones, exploring the world of womanhood and pregnancy in an intrinsic manner rather than sticking to the concept of “twins” as the original film does. Gory, disturbing, repugnant, chaotic, and sexy are some words that come to mind to describe the six-episode mini-series. This is a fair warning for the squeamish because, along with a lot of blood and body horror, there are many birthing scenes that are rather uncomfortable to watch. Don’t expect to leave anything to your imagination because there is no holding back in “Dead Ringers.” The term “baby sister” will never be the same again.
“Dead Ringers” follows the Mantle twins (Rachel Weisz), Beverley and Elliot (same as in the 1988 film), who are genius gynecologists by profession. Ridiculously, along with sharing a profession, they also share partners—essentially everything in life.

If you are into martial arts films, especially those produced by Shaw Brothers Studios in the late 70s, the Flying Guillotine would probably be your favorite weapon from the Qing Dynasty. It looks very much like a hat with a netting full of razor sharp blades in the rim and there is a long chain attached to it. The skillful wielder or assassin throws it from a distance onto someone's head and with a pull of the chain, the blades circle in and cut the poor victim's head clean off. It is a very effective way to kill and besides it is quiet and almost impossible to defend against.
Though associated with Emperor Yung Cheng and his elite squad of assassins during the Qing Dynasty, no one really knows if such a device actually existed. But this deadly legendary Chinese killing machine sure looks great flying across the silver screens...

The new Prime Video psychological thriller Dead Ringers follows Manhattan-based gynecologists, who are on a mission to change the way women give birth and perform questionable procedures on infertile women – and happen to identical twins.
Series costar Poppy Liu spoke with uInterview founder Erik Meers in an exclusive interview about her role in Dead Ringers, where she discussed the show’s premise as well as what it was like to work with Academy Award-winning actress Rachel Weisz.
When asked about her character, Greta, and her relationship with her, Liu described having “a lot of love for her.”
“She’s just such a weird strange little freaky weirdo,” she said. “She’s like a loner, could-be-genius, could-be-serial-killer. Very deep unsolved mother issues. Putting on his best Luke Bryan and Jason Aldean voice, Liu joked, “Let’s take it to Nashville real quick” before launching into the song.
Instead of its typical hip-hop sound, the band played the song in a slow country style, and Liu matched it, turning the song into a very credible country song.

Watch any of the films that made Jackie Chan a legend and you notice that so much of his graceful, goofball charisma comes from simply having one more move up his sleeve. Whether changing position while sliding down a plate-glass skyscraper or falling off a clock face onto a series of awnings or dispatching multiple assailants with his witty brand of bendy, aerobic kung-fu, only to end on a silly eye-poke or a gymnastic semi-levitation, the star-making flourish is so often the extra thing he does when anyone else would be finished.
But what do you do when, nearing 70 and with almost 150 movie performances behind you, there aren’t that many one-more-moves left? Maybe you make something like Larry Yang’s “Ride On,” a sappy but enjoyable slice of family fun that has a nice horse doing wacky tricks for the younger viewers and for parents and older fans, is a gently meta,...

It seems like only yesterday that Lucy Liu was landing on a Philadelphia baseball field on dragon-back to cause chaos, yet tomorrow "Shazam! Fury of the Gods" is already set to land on digital platforms. Warner Bros. has confirmed to /Film that, as ComicBook.com first reported, the "Shazam" sequel film is already set to drop via digital release on April 7, 2023.
This is an exceptionally quick turnaround time for a film that hit theaters just under three weeks ago, but then again, superhero film fans don't exactly seem to be willing to head to theaters to support the Zachary Levi-led movie. "Shazam! Fury of the Gods" saw a precipitous 67.8% drop between its first and second week of release, after underperforming during its opening weekend as well. Warner Bros' decision to quickly opt in to an at-home viewing option seems like a smart one, as DC fans who no longer consider...

It was recently announced that ever-prolific online content factory Buzzfeed would begin using artificial intelligence technology to generate articles — so can A.I. screenwriting be far behind? Amid a surfeit of production company idents at the outset of “One True Loves,” the presence of Buzzfeed Studios’ logo brings that question to mind; the rigidly generic love story that ensues keeps it there. In fact, this adaptation of a 2016 bestseller by Taylor Jenkins Reid (“Daisy Jones & The Six”) was scripted by the author herself, in collaboration with her husband Alex. There’s scant evidence of personal investment, however, in this clean, anodyne drama of messy romantic conflicts, in which everyone from director Andy Fickman to stars Simu Liu, Phillipa Soo and Luke Bracey is working in strict get-the-job-done mode.
The bland proficiency on display throughout “One True Loves” is galling in a story that calls for ripe emotional excess, conceived...

Simu Liu may be starring in one of the biggest movies of 2023, but no one will mistake “One True Loves” for that honorific. But, somehow, this rom-com adaptation is more plastic than “Barbie.”
Liu leads “One True Loves,” the big screen adaptation of Taylor Jenkins Reid’s 2016 novel of the same name. Liu is Sam, a high school music teacher who finally lands the woman of his dreams, childhood crush Emma (Phillipa Soo). The only issue? Emma’s first husband Jesse (Luke Bracey) was presumed dead after a fatal helicopter crash, and miraculously is rescued four years later, proving to be alive and very ready to rekindle his relationship with Emma right before her wedding to Sam.
If the premise sounds like the stuff of beach reads, it is. The Reid cinematic universe is rapidly expanding, with Prime Video series “Daisy Jones & the Six” having gone viral and fans...

Welcome to Barbie Land, where a doll’s life might seem too perfect to be… perfect. On Tuesday, Warner Bros. Pictures released the second teaser trailer of the Greta Gerwig-directed Barbie, out July 21. It gives a first look at the iconic doll (played by Margot Robbie) and her boyfriend Ken (Ryan Gosling) seemingly attempting to get out of Barbie Land for “the Real World.” (We finally get a hint at the parody plot!)
The teaser is set in the plastic-made, heart-shaped Barbie Land — the imaginary world is Barbie Land...

It’s truly a Barbie world in the latest trailer and character posters released Tuesday, teasing the star-studded ensemble for the upcoming Barbie movie.
In the trailer for Warner Bros. and Mattel’s upcoming romantic comedy, Barbie is breaking free of her perfect universe of dolls and into the human world. While fans have gotten a few first photo looks — both official and unofficial — of stars Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling in the highly anticipated, Greta Gerwig-directed film, not much has been known about the supporting cast. Now, the trailer and new posters reveal more about the movie’s Barbies, Kens and humans — and teases an appearance by John Cena, whose character is currently unknown and not featured in the first look.
Joining Robbie’s classic Barbie is Issa Rae’s president Barbie, Kate McKinnon’s gymnast Barbie, Dua Lipa’s mermaid Barbie, Nicola Coughlan’s diplomat Barbie, Alexandra Shipp’s writer Barbie,...

Margot Robbie is determined to find the place beyond the plastic dream world she’s used to.
Robbie stars as the titular Barbie doll in Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie,” a musical take on the famed Mattel doll. Ryan Gosling co-stars as Ken, with an ensemble cast including Simu Liu, Kate McKinnon, America Ferrera, Issa Rae, Michael Cera, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Nicola Coughlan, Emerald Fennell, and more rumored to be playing various iterations of Barbie and Ken. Will Ferrell stars as a villainous toy executive.
The teaser for “Barbie” revealed the true high-brow/low-brow take on the beloved children’s toy and collector items with a direct homage to Stanley Kubrick’s “2001: A Space Odyssey.” Director and co-writer Gerwig, who penned the script along with collaborator Noah Baumbach, revealed she was terrified to helm a film about iconic Barbie dolls.
