Ventureland is teaming with podcast companies Campside Media and Tenderfoot TV on a new doc and companion podcast chronicling the fight around Atlanta’s “Cop City.”
The film will explore the politics, activism and turmoil that has surrounded the development of the 85-acre police and fire training center — set to be one of the largest facilities like it in the United States and located in a preserved forest — since it was announced by the city’s then-Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms back in Spring 2021. Currently in development, the doc will include on-the-ground reporting and key subjects who can shed light on the political flashpoint being constructed within the unofficial capital of the American South.
“The debate over Cop City is a microcosm of what’s happening in cities across the country,” says Campside co-founder Matthew Shaer. “It brings together all these different discussions: About race, about policing, about urban development and environmental resources.

Atlanta — Last Saturday, a crowd of protesters clad in black marched up Peachtree Street in downtown Atlanta. They wrapped t-shirts or balaclavas around their faces, with some stretching tube socks over their shoes, to make it impossible to tell who anyone was. As the protest crossed Ellis Street, the tight block of demonstrators splintered as several masked figures sprinted towards the doors of 191 Peachtree Towers, a gilded skyscraper that houses the offices of the Atlanta Police Foundation, the organization that has poured millions into the promotion and development of an...

The sky was gray with rain clouds as a crowd of mourners made their way into Atlanta’s State Farm Arena to celebrate the life of the rapper Takeoff, the cornerstone of the Migos who was shot dead on November 1. The showers, the mayor of Atlanta, Andre Dickens, would tell us later, were a good omen for a funeral, meaning Takeoff, born Kirsnik Khari Ball, had been heaven bound.

When Michael Render — a.k.a. Killer Mike of Run the Jewels — attended an Atlanta City Council meeting last month, he wasn’t interested in performing for the crowd. Instead, he wanted to vent his frustrations. The 47-year-old rapper, like many of the meeting’s attendees, felt like he was being used.
“When you come around and you need donations, when you come around and you need votes, you come to us singers and dancers and club owners and we oblige you,” he said, with Tauheed Epps — the rapper 2 Chainz — standing beside him.

2 Chainz and Killer Mike are pushing for the preservation of Black-owned businesses in Atlanta as the recently introduced nuisance ordinance proves to disproportionately impact small businesses – from restaurants to nightclubs – rooted in the city’s culture and community.
During a city council meeting on Monday, Killer Mike explained that he had last attended a meeting in May to speak about “the importance of small and local businesses,” though he doesn’t feel much has changed in the time since – other than Atlanta’s continued development which prioritizes large corporations over smaller,...
