Netflix is boosting its Australian slate with a limited drama series titled Apple Cider Vinegar, which tells the story of a notorious scam in the health and wellness industry. Produced with Australia’s See-Saw Films and Picking Scabs, the show will be directed by Jeffrey Walker (The Artful Dodger, Modern Family) and co-star star Kaitlyn Dever, Alycia Debnam-Carey and Aisha Dee.
The series is created by award-winning Australian writer Samantha Strauss (Nine Perfect Strangers), who is scripting the show with Anya Beyersdorf and Angela Betzien.
The series is inspired by the real-life story of disgraced Australian wellness influencer Belle Gibson, who built a massive social media following by claiming that she was successfully overcoming a terminal brain cancer diagnosis via healthy eating and other wellness remedies.

Heartfelt adventure film about a young girl overcoming her fears has half-baked environmental messages and mistakes colour for creativity
Get our weekend culture and lifestyle email
Scarygirl is one of those animated productions so loaded with colour and bling, so lit up like a pinball machine, that merely absorbing it makes you feel old. While watching I couldn’t help but wonder if today’s youth consume too many flashing lights and loud noises – and, by the way, keep it down, some of us have to work in the morning.
Once accustomed to the film’s retina-straining shininess, it became increasingly clear the creative elements conjured by the directors Ricard Cussó and Tania Vincent are relegated almost entirely to the surface, because under the hood it’s very familiar indeed. An archetypal hero’s journey in which a youngster heeds the call of adventure, steps out of their comfort zone...

"We shouldn't have to change... No one should." Madman Films in Australia has unveiled an official trailer for a new animated movie called Scarygirl, based on an original idea by creator Nathan Jurevicius. This recently premiered at the 2023 Sydney Film Festival in Australia, hence why this new trailer is out now to follow up that debut. Arkie is an adopted 12-year-old girl, blind in one eye and with a tentacle-like arm, who lives on an isolated peninsula with her over-protective father Blister, a giant octopus. When her world is threatened by a loss of sunlight, a young girl must overcome her fears and journey to a fantastical city, save her father from a mysterious scientist and prevent the destruction of her planet. Starring Jillian Nguyen as the voice of Arkie, plus Sam Neill, Tim Minchin, Anna Torv, Liv Hewson, Mark Coles Smith, Deborah Mailman, and Dylan Alcott. Wow this looks way better than expected.

Standing before technicolor stained glass, her golden curls gleaming, Adrienne Beaufort (Miranda Otto) resembles a saint. She preaches her gospel to a room full of acolytes, decrying materialism and urging the washing away of sin. Then she showcases what might one day be the crowning achievement of her spiritual movement: her family of nearly a dozen children. Most of them have had their hair dyed platinum blond and chopped into harsh bangs and bobs—crude reflections of Adrienne’s own exquisite styling. “They are as pure and untainted as it is possible to be,” Adrienne says to the crowd. “A generation raised away from the suffocating rules of society. Nurtured under the most perfect conditions.”

French sales agency Elle Driver is giving a Cannes Market launch to “Kid Snow,” a West Australian-produced tale of redemption set in the 1970s world of tent boxing. Production starts on Monday in Australia’s Goldfields-Esperance region, making it the first feature film to kick off production in the state since its border re-opened.
Boxing tents toured Australia’s small towns from the early 1900s until the 1970s, and were venues where professional fighters faced off against local challengers. The troupes criss-crossed the outback, boasted a carnival-like atmosphere and were places where Indigenous fighters could become heroes.
Penned by writers John Brumpton and Stephen Cleary, the story involves a washed-up Irish boxer named Kid Snow who is finally given a chance to redeem himself when he is offered a rematch against the man he fought a decade prior, on a night that changed his life forever. When Kid Snow meets single mother Sunny,...

Released in 2018 the Australian alien invasion film Occupation caught a lot of people off guard with the amount of action and the quality of the effects it produced on a low budget. Now the sequel Occupation: Rainfall is here, the success of the original allowing it the luxury of a $25,000,000 dollar budget. That’s about one-tenth of the Hollywood blockbusters it’s competing with. Can it hold its own against the competition, or is resistance to the Disney Empire futile?

Proof-of-concept short film The Story of Lee Ping provides a snapshot of the world that will be featured in Tarasin’s upcoming feature debut, which is based on novel ‘The Burial’ by Courtney Collins.
Set in the rural backlots of 1920s Australia, the 14-minute drama follows a young Chinese woman (Jillian Nguyen) who is imprisoned as an erotic dancer.
As she plots her freedom, Lee meets Jack (Mark Coles Smith), an Aboriginal farmhand who changes her perspective.
The film was produced by Lucy Maclaren and Jo McNulty-Clark, with Stephen Vineberg, Deanne Weir and Oliver Lawrance serving as executive producers.
Tarasin said she was inspired to tell the back stories of two minor characters from what will become the feature as they explored similar themes to the main story.

Hugo Weaving and Jillian Nguyen in ‘Loveland’.
Jillian Nguyen landed her first screen role – as Molly Kane in Justin Kurzel’s True History of the Kelly Gang – just two weeks after graduating from 16th Street Actors Studio in Melbourne last year.
Since then her career has rocketed as she played the lead in Ivan Sen’s romantic sci-fi drama Loveland followed by a key supporting role in Hungry Ghosts, Matchbox Pictures’ genre-bending 4-parter for Sbs directed by Shawn Seet.
There was one speed bump after Kurzel’s film wrapped: She was so depressed she got fired from her retail job. It’s unlikely she will have to go back to such work, as Seet says: “I was blown away by Jillian. She is a real, natural talent.”
Stephen Corvini, who produced Hungry Ghosts with Timothy Hobart, tells If: “She is a superstar in the making. On the screen her energy crackles and pops.

Syfy has been cleaning house and getting rid of a bunch of their existing shows while introducing new ones. Will new shows like Hunters attract bigger audiences than the shows they're dropping? Will Hunters be cancelled or renewed for a second season? Stay tuned.
On Hunters, the beloved wife of a decorated FBI agent (Nathan Phillips) is mysteriously abducted. When it becomes clear that her abduction is tied to a group of ruthless and extraterrestrial terrorists called Hunters, the agent is recruited by a secret government organization called the Exo-Terrorism Unit (Etu) to bring the aliens down. The show also stars Laura Gordon, Shannon Berry, Britne Oldford, Lewis Fitz-Gerald, Mark Coles Smith, Gareth Davies, and Julian McMahon.
The ratings are typically the best indication of a show's likelihood of staying on the air. The higher the ratings, the better the chances for survival. This chart...

Malcolm Kennard and Mark Coles Smith in Pawno.
Actors turned filmmakers Paul Ireland and Damian Hill met doing a play with storied character actor John Brumpton (Romper Stomper, The Hunter).
In Pawno, the pair's first feature as director and screenwriter respectively, Brumpton plays the owner of a Footscray pawn shop and Hill his employee.
Hill started writing the script during the course of the play's run, and afterwards sent it to Ireland, who agreed to direct it.
"Over a three year period we kept developing the script, cutting it down, making it tight, and raising the finance to make it independently", said Ireland.
The film was financed entirely by private donations, a process which "took a long time, but we got the right people in the end", Hill told If.
The screenwriter-star describes the gradual evolution of the script as a process of winnowing.
"We went back and forth with the characters for ages.
