After winning “Survivor 42” in May of 2022, Maryanne Oketch‘s life has been an absolute whirlwind. “I got engaged! So now I’m planning my wedding, which is hectic but fun,” she reveals as we recently caught up with her over Zoom. “Being a part of the ‘Survivor’ alumni community has been amazing. It’s the wildest thing ever. Like, Queen Sandra Diaz-Twine knew who I was and yelled my name across from a parking lot. That was the peak.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.
As for what she thought of the most recent winner, Dee Valladares from “Survivor 45,” Maryanne calls her “amazing” and explains, “Dee played the game that I think a lot of us players wish that we played. Dominant the whole time, winning immunities, having a great social game, physical game, lying, doing all these cool moves. Oh my goodness! Dee played wonderfully and fully deserved the win.

“Survivor 45” made history once again last week as Kaleb Gebrewold successfully played his Shot in the Dark to a unanimous vote against him, breaking the record with 11 votes cast for him, two more than when Kelley Wentworth back in “Survivor: Second Chance” played an immunity idol negating nine votes against her. Let’s break down what events transpired that led up to this groundbreaking moment as the tribes converged to one beach.
After the ouster of Brando Meyer in the last episode, Kendra McQuarrie was on the warpath and wanted revenge on Emily Flippen for lying to her, and siding with the Reba duo of Austin Li Coon and Drew Basile. The next day, right before the boats arrived to pick the tribes up to unite with everyone, Bruce Perreault was able to find the new Lulu idol underneath the shelter and shared it with the whole tribe, minus Katurah Topps.

Since the creation of the Shot in the Dark twist at the start of the “new era” that began with “Survivor 41,” several castaways have tried using the one-in-six advantage to save their ailing games, but no one ever had luck on their side. Until now. Warning: this article contains spoilers from “Survivor 45,” Episode 6, so read at your own risk!
After the remaining 13 players attended a group tribal council in the pre-merge phase of the game, Kaleb Gebrewold knew he was in danger. He tried pegging J. Maya Krishnan-Jha as a bigger threat, but it didn’t seem to work. One by one, each player went to the cast their votes and all of them wrote down Kaleb’s name. Kaleb, having been warned by Emily Flippen that his game was hanging from a thread, didn’t vote and instead opted to play his Shot in the Dark.

The drones have spoken.
In anticipation of the upcoming season premieres of “Survivor 45” and “The Amazing Race 35,” CBS staged a massive event on Saturday night at Hollywood High School featuring 400 drones. The Wurtenberger brothers have taken over CBS reality TV shows.
Current “Big Brother 25” houseguest Cory Wurtenberger made a comment during the August 10 live show that may have confused casual viewers: “Beat you, Zach.” As it turns out, he was poking fun at his real-life big bro Zach Wurtenberger, who was the first person voted out of “Survivor 42.” By surviving his own show’s initial eviction, Cory has now lasted longer than Zach, so their family dinners will never be the same.
“F*** that guy,” Zach jokingly posted on social media immediately after Cory’s “Beat you, Zach” comment aired on CBS. He later wrote, “Look at that smug f***er,” when a fan posted a photo of Cory’s face. Talk about the ultimate sibling rivalry! Zach later changed his profile pictures to images of Hisam Goueli, one of Cory’s allies in the “BB25” house.

If you watched the first episode of “Big Brother 25,” you learned that one of the new houseguests, Jared Fields, is related to a “Survivor” legend, Cirie Fields, who later joined the show as the 17th player. However, Cory Wurtenberger also has a connection to a former “Survivor” castaway, but that relationship wasn’t revealed to viewers. At least, not yet.
Cory’s brother is Zach Wurtenberger, who was the first person voted out of “Survivor 42.” Zach is perhaps best remembered as being the fated love interest of eventual winner Maryanne Oketch. (Remember when she told Jeff Probst that Zach was “literally picture perfect” following his elimination?) After that season aired on CBS, the two jokingly changed their social media names to “Zach Oketch” and “Maryanne Wurtenberger.”

Big Brother 25 premiered last night (August 2) with 16 brand new houseguests and a surprise 17th addition in the form of Survivor legend Cirie Fields. Cirie, a four-time Survivor veteran, was officially added to the cast at the end of the season premiere, which aired live on CBS. She joined her son, Jared Fields, who was previously announced as one of the Big Brother 25 cast members. It’s unclear right now whether Jared knew his mother would be part of the cast or not. The Survivor connections don’t end there, as another cast member is Cory Wurtenberger, the brother of Survivor 42 castaway Zach Wurtenberger, who was voted out first on his season. It wasn’t a great start for the Survivor relatives, though, as both Jared and Corey ended up on the block alongside Kirsten and Felicia. Cirie was unleashed on the house as part of this season’s twist, which involves the “Big Brother Multiverse.

Since the premier of Survivor season 44, we’ve been introduced to some pretty unique contestants. Carolyn Wiger makes people tune in for her silly antics, and Dr. Will is continuing to make a name for himself after appearing on other shows like Big Brother 2, and The Price is Right.
However, there’s only one contestant this season who managed the impressive task of raising $150,000 for coronavirus (Covid-19) relief in only two weeks. Her name is Claire Rafson, and she is clearly a force to be reckoned with.

When the coronavirus hit the U.S., Rafson was fresh out of college.

At the start of the “new era” of “Survivor” that began with the reality TV show’s 41st season, Jeff Probst introduced a twist known as the Shot in the Dark. This die gives a player a one-in-six chance of receiving safety at tribal council, in exchange for them not voting. A handful of contestants tried their luck at pulling the “Safe” scrolls during “Survivor 41,” “Survivor 42” and “Survivor 43,” but all of them ended up with “Not Safe” scrolls instead. Well, that all changed during the season premiere of “Survivor 44.”
After the Ratu tribe lost the first immunity challenge of the season, Jaime Lynn Ruiz felt nervous back at camp. Even though she and the other two girls, Maddy Pomilla and Lauren Harpe, were planning an epic blindside of NFL player Brandon Cottom in order to flush his not-so-hidden immunity idol, Jaime still felt the need to play her Shot in the Dark.

The Survivor Season 44 premiere is less than a week away, and we could not be more excited to officially meet the brand new cast of 18 castaways. Based on their preseason interviews and CBS’s sneak peeks, we know that the group of players will win the hearts of fans. And even though it was difficult, we’ve narrowed the list to five players most likely to steal the show.

Few TV shows make it to Season 43. For every “60 Minutes” (54 seasons) and “Saturday Night Live” (47 seasons), there are hundreds, if not thousands, of television programs that are canceled or ended before they even make it to double digits. But “Survivor” just keeps going. Now the granddaddy of all reality TV shows is gearing up for its 43rd season (and 22nd year), due out in Fall 2022, with Jeff Probst back as host and executive producer. The most recent season, “Survivor 42,” was so captivating, it proves why the series deserves to reclaim its time in the Emmy spotlight.

Three “Survivor” legends — Lauren-Ashley Beck (Season 39), Brice Johnston (Season 28) and Ozzy Lusth — attended a Season 42 finale watch party at Busby’s West on May 25 to see who would became the latest member of the show’s iconic winners list. They were joined by many former castaways (including Season 33 champ Adam Klein and Season 36 winner Wendell Holland), other reality TV show stars, plus dozens of fans who all watched the three-hour episode live on CBS. Gold Derby was on hand to talk with the trio of former players about how the reality TV show has evolved in recent years.
“I feel like for a long time ‘Survivor’ has missed the mark and I feel like it is so great to see the diversity,” Brice told me. He is the first openly gay Black person to play, and now he’s “honored to see the trans representation, the Poc representation, the women representation.

All season long, Gold Derby readers have been making their predictions about who they think will win “Survivor 42,” and things are looking good for Maryanne Oketch to take home the 1 million grand prize. The 24-year-old seminary student from Ajax, Ontario leads our finale racetrack odds at 2/9, far ahead of our second place competitor, Lindsay Dolashewich, who trails at 23/2 odds. If our users are correct that Maryanne will prevail, she would become only the second Black female winner in the show’s 42-season history, following Vecepia Towery in Season 4.
Here are Gold Derby’s “Survivor 42” winner predictions ahead of the May 25 season finale on CBS.
1. Maryanne Oketch — 2/9 odds
2. Lindsay Dolashewich — 23/2 odds
3. Jonathan Young — 16/1 odds

In a “Survivor 42” sneak peek video for the Wednesday, May 11 episode, Maryanne Oketch admits she’s having “so much fun” despite her toenail falling off. You read that right. When her fellow Top 7 castaways are sitting around killing time, she announces to the group, “Guys, I just lost my toenail.” The others are speechless at hearing that fact, particularly as Maryanne doesn’t seem to be upset at all. Why? Because apparently she loses her pinky toenails “pretty often,” she confesses. Watch the hilarious video above.

Swati Goel saw her torch snuffed far sooner than some may have expected on this week’s episode of “Survivor 42.” The 19-year-old emerged as a power player on the Ika tribe in the first few episodes, making alliances with just about everyone. But all those deals caught up to her in Episode 4, when the other players compared notes and realized she was making promises to too many people. The tribe then proceeded to vote her out, but do you think her ouster was deserved? Vote in our poll below.

Dating back to the first episode, Swati made bonds with her Ika tribemates, particularly the younger players, Tori Meehan and Zach Wurtenberger. Those relationships were thrown out the window when she campaigned to take out Zach in the first Tribal Council of the season, leading the charge that ultimately led to him being booted. In the game of “Survivor,” some players keep their advantages secret while others spill the beans. Maryanne Oketch is a bean-spiller. Just minutes after returning to camp after voting out Marya Sherron, Maryanne told her remaining tribe mates — Lindsay Dolashewich, Jonathan Young and Omar Zaheer — that she’d secured an extra vote thanks to spinning her “risk/reward” wheel during the previous summit. While the Taku tribe seemed pleased for Maryanne, Lindsay revealed privately that she was now “on the fence” about the enthusiastic player. Watch the “Survivor 42” preview video above.

“Although we have four, it’s like we’ve got five!” Maryanne shouted after returning to the Taku camp. The way she worded the announcement, it seemed as though she was offering up the advantage for the entire group to use, should a swap or merge come about.

Throughout the first two episodes of “Survivor” Season 42, all we’ve seen of Tori Meehan is that she’s a tad paranoid and that she’s lying about her profession (she told her tribe mates she’s a caregiver despite actually being a therapist). In a new deleted scene, we learn something else about the 25-year-old therapist from Tulsa, Oklahoma: she thinks lizards taste “icky.” Warning: vegetarians may not want to watch the “Survivor 42” deleted scene above.
The two-minute unseen footage takes place on Day 4 at the Ika camp, shortly after the group unanimously voted out Zach Wurtenberger. Since this season doesn’t provide the castaways any rice for sustenance, Tori, Swati Goel and Romeo Escobar hunt for lizards at the water well. “We are on Day 4 and we are feeling the effects of the game,” Tori explains in a confessional. “No one else is looking for food. After 42 seasons and two decades on the air, even Jeff Probst is occasionally left speechless. That’s exactly what happened during the second episode of “Survivor 42” when the Taku and Vati tribes got their first look at the new Ika tribe after Zach Wurtenberger‘s elimination. Upon seeing Zach missing from the cast, Maryanne Oketch‘s mouth dropped open in shock. “I told my tribe, and I guess I’ll tell all of you, Zach is like every type of white guy that I have a crush on,” Maryanne explained. “So there goes that.”
Wasting no time, Jeff immediately started grilling her on her romantic feelings toward the Mia castaway. “Really? So a blossoming love affair is over?” he wondered aloud. “I just want to take this moment, Maryanne, to show how beautiful this is. In the midst of a very difficult game, you still have a little hope for love.

Zach Wurtenberger had the unlucky distinction of being the first person voted out of “Survivor 42,” which premiered last week on CBS. The 22-year-old student started the game as an eager superfan, making early alliances with most of his tribemates. After losing the Immunity Challenge for his tribe, though, he was targeted by some of those same tribemates and was ultimately voted out unanimously. As it turns out, “Survivor” fans mostly agree with the tribe’s decision.
In our recent poll, which asked fans to pick who they think should have gone home from the Ika tribe, Zach earned a whopping 51% of the vote. The next highest was Tori Meehan at 29%, having caused a stir by going off alone into the jungle, with many of her tribemates assuming she was hunting for Hidden Immunity Idols. Next up was Rocksroy Bailey at 13%, who was also a potential target after putting in a...

One of the breakout stars of the “Survivor” Season 42 premiere episode was Maryanne Oketch, a 24-year-old seminary student originally from Kenya. The self-described “weird” castaway stood out for her big smile and seemingly endless enthusiasm. But now, after four days on the island, she’s starting to “rub people the wrong way,” according to fellow Taku tribe member Lindsay Dolashewich. Above, watch the Maryanne-centric “Survivor 42” sneak peek video for Episode 2, which airs Wednesday, March 16 on CBS.

The video clip starts out with Maryanne chopping bamboo next to Lindsay and Jonathan Young. When she forcefully swings down the axe, Jonathan stands up and moves to the other side of Lindsay. “Yeah, I’d move too if I were you,” Maryanne laughs. Jonathan then mentions how she looks like she’s a horror movie villain, to which Maryanne swings the axe and screeches, “Here’S Maryanne!”

CBS has released another deleted scene from the “Survivor” Season 42 premiere episode, and we have a feeling this one will stick with us for a while. In the 60-second video clip (watch below), the Taku tribe members laughed about how they assumed this season would have a “David vs. Goliath” theme based on each other’s physical appearances. The conversation then turned to muscle man Jonathan Young, with Jackson Fox likening him to a “hippie” and Lindsay Dolashewich calling out his resemblance to the God of Thunder, aka Thor (played by Chris Hemsworth in the Marvel/Disney movies).
Yep, now we can’t unsee it. Jonathan and Thor both have flowing brown locks, facial hair and a godly amount of muscles. While Thor wields his trusty hammer and dons a red cape, Jonathan relies on his bamboo axe and wears an orange buff. Watch the “Survivor 42” deleted scene right here:...

The “Survivor 42” premiere is now in the books, and from the uniqueness of the first challenge (complete with fake blood and a cross-tribal alliance formed), Jackson Fox‘s unexpected early ejection from the game and the first proper vote-out of the season, fans already have plenty to talk about. Zach Wurtenberger became the first player of the season to be voted out of the game, following a lackluster challenge performance and some messy gameplay at camp. But do you think he should have been the one to go? Vote in our poll below.
Zach made a big first impression in the opening minutes of the game, with his enthusiasm for being on “Survivor” proving infectious to his fellow castaways. The superfan formed an early bond with the younger members of his Ika tribe, Swati Goel and Tori Meehan, while also developing a side alliance with Romeo Escobar. After Tori was...

Zach Wurtenberger believes he has the analytical skills to do very well as one of the contestants on “Survivor 42.” The 22-year-old student from South Florida talks in his CBS interview about how “Survivor” is “one of the most important things in my life,” making it clear that he is a superfan of the long-running reality series. “Knowing the numbers, knowing when to split votes, that stuff just comes super naturally,” he says (watch below).
In high school, Zach was involved in speech and debate, which he believes prepared him to play the game of “Survivor.” “It’s not necessarily about the fact or the argument itself as it is forming your arguments for your judge or your audience,” he observes. This will certainly come in handy should Zach make it to the Final Tribal Council and face the jury, but it may also benefit him in the game itself as...

Just like last year, the 18 all-new cast members of “Survivor 42” will start out the game on three different tribes. There will initially be six people per group, but as the numbers begin to dwindle things will be shaken up and the three tribes will likely merge into two, and then eventually one. Once again, the reality TV show features a wide range of diverse cast members from all walks of life. Whomever outwits, outplays and outlasts all of the others will be rewarded with a cool $1 million check at the end of the season. Scroll down to see which castaways are on each of the “Survivor 42” tribes: Ika, Taku and Vati.
