Weeks after multiple top diversity executives departed their posts, a group of California lawmakers put pressure on the Hollywood companies that reap a combined $1.65 billion in tax credits from the state. “One executive removal could be a fluke. But four more?” said Sen. Lola Smallwood at a July 13 press conference from the California Legislative Black Caucus. “This is a troubling pattern.”

Casey Bloys, chief content officer for HBO and HBO Max, has renewed his deal with Warner Bros. Discovery for five more years, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
Bloys became HBO programming chief in May 2016 and in August 2020 took over original content duties for HBO Max, WarnerMedia’s new streaming platform. His new deal follows WarnerMedia merging with Discovery to create Warner Bros. Discovery, led by CEO David Zaslav.
Significantly, Bloys reupping his contract stands in contrast to a slew of WarnerMedia execs who departed ahead of or after the Warner Bros. Discovery merger being completed. That exodus includes Ann Sarnoff, the chair and CEO of Warner Bros., and Jason Kilar, the CEO of WarnerMedia, in addition to HBO Max chief Andy Forssell, chief revenue officer Tony Goncalves, chief technology officer Richard Tom and chief financial officer Jennifer Biry.

Johanna Fuentes is about to exit her post as head of global communications for WarnerMedia Studios and Networks Group. Tom Ascheim, former head of the Kids and Family division, is also leaving in the latest round of high-level executive changes spurred by the WarnerMedia-Discovery merger.
Fuentes joined the studio in 2020 as executive vice president of worldwide communications after a long tenure in communications at Showtime. She is expected to remain at Warner Bros. for about another month to help with the post-merger transition. AT&T spun off its WarnerMedia unit into a merger with Discovery that was completed last month.
Fuentes spearheaded a significant amount of turf during her two years at the studio, reporting directly to former chairman Ann Sarnoff as well as Christy Haubegger, chief enterprise and inclusion officer for WarnerMedia, both of whom have also left in the wake of the transaction.

Another top Warner exec, John Rogovin, is heading for the exits amid a major corporate shakeout following the merger of WarnerMedia and Discovery last month.
The longtime EVP, general counsel for WarnerMedia Studios and Networks, who previously served at the FCC and DOJ, said, “It’s been an incredible run for 14 years. Serving as the General Counsel of Warner Bros. has been one of the all-time great legal jobs. But now is the right time for me to move on. Cases he spearheaded included the studio’s landmark Superman termination rights case.

The final bow has been placed atop the 40 billion merger of WarnerMedia and Discovery, forming one of the largest pure content players in the media business.
The AT&T spinoff maneuver formally closed late Friday, and Monday will see Warner Bros Discovery stock begin trading, under the ticker symbol “Wbd.”
Discovery CEO David Zaslav had been set as the new leader of Warner Bros Discovery since the time the deal was first proposed last May. Questions swirled for months, though, about the leadership team he would put in place. Earlier this week, he wound up favoring Discovery brass across the board (something Deadline’s reporting had predicted a month ago).
Jb Perrette, who had been head of streaming and international for Discovery, was installed as CEO and president of global streaming and interactive entertainment. Gunnar Wiedenfels, former CFO at Discovery and one of the architects of the merger, will hold the...

David Zaslav will have a tight grip on the operations of Warner Bros. Discovery under the management structure unveiled for the new company that is set to emerge on Monday, Variety has learned.
Zaslav, as longtime observers predicted, has opted to have a direct-report relationship with the leaders of the businesses he doesn’t know as well as he does cable channels and advertising sales, per individuals close to the situation. Those include Casey Bloys, president of HBO/HBO Max, Warner Bros. Pictures chairman Toby Emmerich and Warner Bros. TV Group chief Channing Dungey.
To help manage his large number of direct reports, it’s no surprise that Zaslav has tapped trusted Discovery lieutenants for key operational roles, notably Bruce Campbell and Jb Perrette.

Jeff Zucker’s surprise resignation from CNN on Wednesday quickly triggered puzzled questions over just what led to his ouster after revelations of his relationship with Allison Gollust, EVP and Chief Marketing Officer for CNN Worldwide.
One CNN anchor, Alisyn Camerota, even said on air that it “feels wrong” that two consenting adults, who are both executives, could not have a private relationship.
But the relationship itself is not what triggered WarnerMedia CEO Jason Kilar’s call to Zucker in recent days informing him that he had to exit or face termination, we’ve learned. Rather, it was Zucker’s failure to disclose the relationship, in violation of WarnerMedia policy. Mere days after Kilar was informed of Zucker’s omissions by outside lawyers probing the now-fired Chris Cuomo’s stint at CNN, the exec called Zucker and told him, “You can’t remain here.”

On the eve of AT&T’s third-quarter earnings report, WarnerMedia’s top leadership invited Variety to the Warner Bros. lot in Burbank for an open-ended conversation about where the company is headed as regulators scrutinize its planned merger with Discovery Inc. That deal will see the entertainment division spun off from the telecom giant a mere three years after AT&T finalized its purchase of HBO, Warner Bros. and Turner networks for $85.4 billion.
WarnerMedia CEO Jason Kilar, Ann Sarnoff, chair and CEO of WarnerMedia Studio and Networks Group, and Andy Forssell, executive vice president and general manager of WarnerMedia direct-to-consumer, were all present for the conversation. The trio stressed that despite the fact that the company is operating in the shadow of yet another disruptive merger, they are focused on positioning WarnerMedia (soon to be rechristened Warner Bros. Discovery) as one of the victors in the streaming wars.

AT&T CEO John Stankey and CFO Pascal Desroches held a 45-minute WebX town hall for WarnerMedia employees this morning, offering additional information about the entertainment unit’s upcoming merger with Discovery.
The $43 billion deal surprised the industry, and while it’s expected to take at least a year to close, it has prompted a flurry of questions about the future for the companies and the media business. Investors reacted poorly to the news on the first full day of trading since the announcement, sending AT&T shares down 6% on the day.
The discussion with the two executives was moderated by Christy Haubegger, WarnerMedia communications chief and top inclusion officer. From those who attended, we hear that for the most part, it was in some ways a recap from yesterday’s hour-long press briefing with Discovery CEO David Zaslav and Stankey about the deal. AT&T chief John Stankey and Chief Financial Officer Pascal Desroches were asked tough questions about the implications of the pending merger of WarnerMedia and Discovery during an all-hands meeting of studio employees on Tuesday.
Stankey tried to placate worried staffers by assuring them that he was going to advocate on their behalf and also urged them to “stay the course” during the months it will take for the deal to close. Media coverage has largely focused on AT&T’s decision to spin off WarnerMedia as an ignominious retreat by the telecom giant from the content business, one that added unsustainable debt to its balance sheet. Stankey was asked by WarnerMedia communications chief Christy Haubegger about press coverage of the sale, which focused on how Discovery chief David Zaslav had stealthily orchestrated the shocking merger and positioned the story as “a David and Goliath tale,” one in which Discovery was the victor.

WarnerMedia is joining Netflix and Amazon Studios in refusing to participate in any more events related to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association until the org demonstrates real, lasting reform and change, according to a letter that has been sent to HFPA president Ali Sar.
In the letter, signed by key WarnerMedia execs and shared with reporters on Monday morning, the conglomerate writes that its leaders don’t believe that the HFPA’s plans for change, announced last week, “goes far enough in addressing the breadth of our concerns, nor does your timeline capture the immediate need by which these issues should be addressed. WarnerMedia Studios and Networks will continue to refrain from direct engagement with the HFPA, including sanctioned press conferences and invitations to cover other industry events with talent, until these changes are implemented.”

WarnerMedia has now joined the growing chorus of studios, streamers and talent damning the pace and scope of reform at the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. Like powerhouses Netflix and Amazon this weekend, the home of Golden Globes heavyweight HBO has pulled the plug on all interaction with the insular group until “changes are implemented.”
“While we commend the HFPA membership’s approval of the plan to move towards radical reform, we don’t believe the plan goes far enough in addressing the breadth of our concerns, nor does your timeline capture the immediate need by which these issues should be addressed,” declared the top brass at the AT&T-owned giant in a letter sent to HFPA president Ali Sar yesterday.

Whatever bad stuff went down during the making of Justice League, Warner Media aren’t talking about it except to say they’ve handled it, just trust them.
“WarnerMedia’s investigation into the Justice League movie has concluded and remedial action has been taken,” the AT&T-owned media company said in a late Friday news dump. Beyond the statement from Global Communications chief Christy Haubegger, WarnerMedia would not give any more details on what that action is or who it was directed towards. I hear high-level Warner Bros executives on the motion picture side were blindsided by tonight’s announcement, and oblivious as to who specifically was receiving punishment in this situation; the entire Jl-Fisher incident being completely handled by parent WarnerMedia.
However, Ray Fisher the man at the center of this probe into replacement director Joss Whedon’s conduct on set, was a bit less cryptic himself and clearly in a good mood.

Christine Simmons, the COO of the AMPAS, isn’t letting her organization forget about 2016’s #OscarsSoWhite, which actually predated her tenure. These days she wants to “institutionalize the good” as much as eliminate the “institutionalized oppression.”
Simmons, who was part of a five-woman panel focused on “Redefining Corporate Culture” at TheWrap’s Power Women Summit, has more than just the chief operating officer initials on her office door at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. She also oversees the office of representation, inclusion and equity — a role she takes just as seriously as the one that facilitates the Academy Awards.
“Just as important as it is to put on that show, it’s just as important that there’s representation,” Simmons told moderator Nina Shaw, who is the founder of the Hollywood Commission on Eliminating Sexual Harassment and Advancing Equality. “It’s a business imperative.”

WarnerMedia CEO Jason Kilar addressed company employees at a virtual town hall meeting Wednesday, which followed the latest round of layoffs at the media company yesterday.
Kilar, joined by James Cummings, EVP and Chief Human Resources Officer, and Christy Haubegger, EVP and Head of Marketing & Communications, opened the hourlong meeting by acknowledging Veterans Day and paying homage to those who have served the country, sources said.
Through some technical glitches early on, I hear Kilar spoke about the painful, gut-wrenching experience of letting people go. He did not provide a count, but hundreds of employees are believed to have exited via layoffs and buyouts yesterday in the completion of a major staff reduction that started with August 10 cuts.
Attendees were reminded of the grim reality of layoffs by getting Deadline’s breaking news alert on Jim Gallagher’s exit as EVP Marketing in Warner Bros.’ Animation & Family unit in the middle of the town hall.

With the Black Lives Matter movement at the center of the national conversation this year, some companies are responding to the issue in their own operations by “leaning into” challenging conversations about topics like race and equality.
The current moment, in the wake of the deaths of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, “has put such a bright spotlight on how uncomfortable people are, still, talking about race and talking about Black-White race relations,” MyKhanh Shelton, WarnerMedia senior vice president of enterprise inclusion said Wednesday during the TheWrap’s annual media conference TheGrill,

Kevin Reilly and Bob Greenblatt are both out at WarnerMedia amid a large-scale reorganization under new CEO Jason Kilar.
The reorganization breaks down the traditional walls of the studio, television and premium cable and brings all content creation into one operation, while at the same time creating a separate focus on HBO Max. The move puts HBO Max at the forefront of WarnerMedia’s future, while at the same time, brings efficiencies to the rest of content creation, including blockbuster movie franchises.
As part of the new structure, Andy Forssell will lead a newly-created HBO Max operating business unit that will be responsible for the global rollout of the subscription video on demand streaming service. Warner Bros. CEO Ann Sarnoff will head up a unified studios and networks group, which will combine all content development under one wing. As part of this, HBO programming president Casey Bloys will expand his...

Stankey made the statement Thursday as part of the release of WarnerMedia’s first-ever annual report looking at diversity, inclusion and belonging across both its corporate operations and the films, television series and digital content created by its various production businesses.
