Feast your eyes on curated footage from the upcoming Apple sci-fi series Dark Matter, starring Joel Edgerton and Jennifer Connelly.
In an alternate timeline, maybe you were a carpet fitter. Unless you already are a carpet fitter, in which case, maybe there’s a parallel reality in which you’re popular disc jockey, or a pilot, or perhaps even a spaniel.
Such is the premise – well, apart from the spaniel part – of Dark Matter, the upcoming sci-fi TV series coming soon to Apple TV+. Joel Edgerton stars as a clever scientist type who suddenly ends up in other realities where he’s confronted with alternate versions of himself and paths not travelled.
The series is based on the book of the same name by Blake Crouch, and emerges on the tail end of the multiverse zeitgeist brought about by the likes of Everything Everywhere All At Once and assorted Marvel films.

Exclusive: Chad Feehan has departed Apple’s upcoming sci-fi drama series from Simon Kinberg and David Weil after a stint as showrunner.
Feehan was brought in out of necessity. Apple picked up the untitled Kinberg/Weil character-driven genre drama — sometime referred to as War of the Worlds project because an early incarnation of the project’s parallels to Hg Wells’ classic — based on two scripts and a bible written by the duo.
But a long-gestation series project, The Hunt, which Wail had created, got a green light at Amazon with Al Pacino starring. It had Weil in first position, so he was not available to be a day-to-day showrunner on the Apple series.
With a tight schedule for rolling out new series by Apple, Feehan, whose past credits include Banshee and Ray Donovan, was hired as executive producer/showrunner to generate scripts, overseeing a small writers room comprised by part-time writers.

While this is his first TV series role in English, he is well known in the world of film, collecting prior Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild Award, BAFTA and Critics’ Choice Award nominations for the 2013 film “Rush.”

Sweeping international shoots, comprehensive historical research,
meticulous costume and music selections, a complex dance between writers and producers — the sheer amount of thought, research and money that went into building the complex and intricate worlds for this year’s limited-series Emmy nominees was infinitely large in scope despite the shorter screen time.
Creating such rich landscapes for the characters was no small feat. From the 1960s to 2000s decades-jumping saga of Showtime’s “Patrick Melrose,” to the gritty streets of New York at the turn of the 19th century in TNT’s “The Alienist,” to Pablo Picasso in National Geographic’s “Genius,” and Andrew Cunanan’s killing spree in the mid-1990s for FX’s “The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story,” these series’ showrunners all agree on one thing: research was fundamental when it came time to bringing these worlds to life.

The Alienist, starring Daniel Bruhl, Luke Evans and Dakota Fanning, is set in the late 1800s and follows an alienist (the term used for psychologists at the time), a newspaper illustrator and a police secretary who team up to solve a string of grisly murders plaguing New York. A rich period drama, the show also explores such themes as class divisions and feminism that still challenge American culture today. TNT is hoping to make a big mark on the Emmys with their limited series “The Alienist.” Produced by Cary Joji Fukunaga (“True Detective”), the show focuses on a criminal psychologist (Daniel Brühl) who teams up with a newspaper illustrator (Luke Evans) and a headstrong NYPD secretary (Dakota Fanning) to investigate a serial killer in 19th century New York City. Dakota Fanning has done a lot of interviews in recent months about her TNT drama “The Alienist,” and one theme keeps popping up: How sadly relevant the show’s treatment of women, immigrants and the poor in the 1890s feels to 2018.
“That comes up a lot when I discuss the series,” she told IndieWire’s Turn It On podcast. “On the one hand, you want your series to be relevant and to speak to people and create conversation, and be modern. But some of the reasons this series is relevant and modern are actually why you wish that weren’t true… There are parallels, that’s a fact.”
In “The Alienist,” Fanning plays Sara Howard, an ambitious secretary determined to become the city’s first female police detective. That puts her in many ways at odds with the times, as women were not accepted in the workplace.
“People my age think 1896, that was forever ago,...

For Michael Kaplan, the chance to step away from costume designing “Star Wars” and work on his first period piece was a long time coming.
In fact, he’d been eyeing Caleb Carr’s “The Alienist” ever since the crime drama was published in 1994 and unsuccessfully developed as a feature by Curtis Hanson. So when Kaplan finally landed the 10-part TNT series set in 1896 New York (with the help of producer friend and J.J. Abrams collaborator Bryan Burke), it was both a welcome and fortuitous fit.
“Conveying class differences was a big part of my attraction to the project,” Kaplan said. “There are so many different strata in 1896 New York society. But it was like doing 10 movies at once. We were doing dozens of fittings a day, every day, like five days a week, sometimes seven. It was crazy. But I wanted to take the time and the care with each performer.

No stranger to serial killer series and period dramas of all kinds, cinematographer P.J. Dillon found his latest great challenge on TNT drama The Alienist, looking to capture both the ornate architecture and the seedy underbelly of 19thcentury New York.
Certainly, this is a place and time that has been well documented on screen, through films including The Age of Innocence and Gangs of New York. But with The Alienist, Dillon worked with production designer Mara LePere-Schloop and director Jakob Verbruggen to give an all-new, immersive take on this world.
Centering on a crime reporter and a psychologist investigating a serial killer operating in New York’s Gilded Age, The Alienist involved 360-degree visuals—with six-story tenement buildings designed for the series—complicated Steadicam shots, and practical light sources of the period, which lent another degree of authenticity to the production.

The Alienist, TNT’s limited series about the search for a serial killer, is set in 19th century New York. But Dakota Fanning, who plays police department employee Sara Howard, says women back then faced similar challenges on the job as they do today.
As the only woman in the police department, Sara must deal with discrimination, and she is sexually harassed on the job in an incident that seems like it was ripped from current headlines.
“The same things were happening in 1896 that are happening in 2018,” Fanning said Sunday during a panel at Deadline’s The Contenders Emmy event.
Based on the novel by Caleb Carr, the 10-part Alienist series follows Dr. Laszlo Kreizler (Daniel Brühl), a brilliant but controversial “alienist” who uses new psychological methods. Luke Evans co-stars, while Fanning plays a key role as the secretary who secretly helps Kreizler with the search for the serial killer.

[Editor’s note: The following contains spoilers from the first episode of “The Alienist,” titled “The Boy on the Bridge.”]
On TNT’s “The Alienist,” John Moore is part of a team trying to unmask a serial killer who has been targeting boy prostitutes who dress as girls. Getting into the mind of the murderer requires that they understand his past traumas, but Moore has his own problems that he’s not facing.
On the surface, Moore is an upstanding late-19th-century illustrator who is accepted in the highest circles of society. He also has a very peculiar practice when he frequents the local brothel. As he visits his favorite sex worker, she wears an engagement ring, which he provides. When they’re done, he pays her and gets the ring back. We’ve seen this curious transaction take place twice in as many episodes. Luke Evans, who portrays Moore, spoke to IndieWire about about his complex character in a recent interview.
On TNT’s “The Alienist,” John Moore is part of a team trying to unmask a serial killer who has been targeting boy prostitutes who dress as girls. Getting into the mind of the murderer requires that they understand his past traumas, but Moore has his own problems that he’s not facing.

Those missing their “Mindhunter” fix will be delighted to find another auteur filmmaker tackling the period serial killer genre as excitement builds for TNT’s “The Alienist,” a new series executive produced by Cary Fukunaga and Jakob Verbruggen. A gripping new trailer and poster promises a sensuously chilling drama worthy of the “True Detective” creator. Haunting fiddle music plays over young boys’ parlor games; a horse lays bleeding in the cobblestone streets; and the hunt is on for a nefarious “child killer.” As Fukunaga’s first foray into television after “True Detective,” “The Alienist” will surely pack a fine-tuned punch.

After a weekend when “Mindhunter” was the buzz of TV fandom, TNT is throwing its hat into the serial killer drama ring with “The Alienist.” The network has released their latest look at their newest series (well, as long as you’re not counting the promos during the weekend’s baseball playoff games) and it seems as sumptuous as it is unsettling.
Daniel Bruhl, Dakota Fanning, and Luke Evans star in the 1890s-set New York story about the fledgling work of criminal psychology in the big city. Bruhl stars as Laszlo Kreizler, a psychologist, who teams with a local newspaper employee (Evans) and a police secretary (Fanning) who begin to conduct some covert operations to catch the perpetrator behind a series of grisly killings. (And remember, the important question isn’t “what” or “who,” but “Why.”)

The creator of True Detective, Cary Fukunaga, has a new series coming to TNT called The Alienist and it looks incredible! This is a psychological thriller based on the novel by Caleb Carr.
The series is set in 1896 "amidst the vast wealth, extreme poverty and technological innovation of New York during the Gilded Age". The story follows the hunt for a serial killer responsible for the gruesome murders of several boy prostitutes.
