Ari Emanuel tonight left no ambiguity of what he thinks about Benjamin Netanyahu.
Speaking at the Simon Wiesenthal Center’s National Tribute Gala, where he was awarded its Humanitarian Prize, the Endeavor CEO blasted the Israeli prime minister, saying, “The time for Bibi Netanyahu to go has come.”
“This is a painful and crucial moment for all of us who are Jews. It is not a time to stay silent,” Emanuel said to the packed Beverly Wilshire ballroom. Among the high-powered audience at the Beverly Hills hotel on Wednesday were Larry David, Amazon Prime Video boss Jennifer Salke and spouse Bert Salke, Jeffery and Marilyn Katzenberg, powerhouse attorney Patty Glaser and husband Sam, WME co-chairs Christian Muirhead and Richard Weitz, and producer Brian Grazer. As well, a number of Holocaust survivors and those who lived through the fatal terror of Hamas’ October 7 attack on Israeli border towns and army bases.

“This is a painful and crucial moment for all of us who are Jews and who love Israel, and it’s not a time to stay silent,” declared Ari Emanuel, the CEO of sports and entertainment company Endeavor and one of Hollywood’s most outspoken voices in the fight against antisemitism, in a fiery speech as he accepted the Simon Wiesenthal Center’s highest honor, the Humanitarian Award, at the organization’s National Tribute Gala fundraiser Wednesday evening. Emanuel, who is Jewish, then went on to slam, at length, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for his handling of the Israel-Gaza war. Many attendees applauded, but dozens of others stormed out of the room in fury, and others still booed, as Emanuel opined: “For the good of Israel, he should go.”

The UK Culture Secretary has said she lobbied the BBC during a private board meeting to refer to Hamas as “terrorists” in its news coverage.
Lucy Frazer, who has previously said publicly that the corporation should use the term when referring to the group, was put under pressure this morning at a Culture, Media & Sport Committee hearing by committee member John Nicolson over the meeting with BBC head honchos including the Director General that took place late last year.
Nicolson quoted people who attended the meeting and told him they had been “baffled” by Frazer’s insistence to eschew discussing issues like the licence fee settlement and instead continue to “repeat points about Gaza.” “I am told you kept coming back to it,” said Nicolson.
Frazer stressed that a range of points were discussed at the meeting including the license fee settlement but recalled urging the BBC to change its tack on Hamas.

Updated: The Associated Press said that Israeli authorities seized camera and broadcasting equipment and shut down a live shot, contending that the wire service was in violation of a new law restricting Al Jazeera.
Al Jazeera is one of the AP’s customers.
“The Associated Press decries in the strongest terms the actions of the Israeli government to shut down our longstanding live feed showing a view into Gaza and seize AP equipment,” a spokesperson said in a statement.
“The shutdown was not based on the content of the feed but rather an abusive use by the Israeli government of the country’s new foreign broadcaster law.”
The AP said later today that the Israeli government had reversed course and would return the equipment.
The AP had been reporting in Sderot today and its crew was informed that it was in violation of the law. Earlier this month, the government...

President Joe Biden condemned by the move by the International Criminal Court to seek arrest warrants against Israeli leaders, saying that there was “no equivalence” between that country’s actions and those of Hamas.
Earlier today, the Icc issued a legal report in which a panel of international law experts supported a prosecutor’s conclusion that there were “reasonable grounds” to believe that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and minister of defense Yoav Gallant committed war crimes, in addition to leaders of Hamas. Among the experts was Amal Clooney, a special adviser to the prosecutor and wife of actor George Clooney.
The Icc’s move to seek arrest warrants drew immediate pushback from Biden and leaders of both parties in Congress.
Speaking in the Rose Garden at a ceremony to recognize Jewish American Heritage Month, Biden said, “Let me be clear: We reject the Icc’s application for arrest warrants against Israeli leaders.

Amal Clooney is among the group of U.K.-based lawyers who expressed their support for Icc (International Criminal Court) prosecutor Karim Khan’s decision to request a warrant for the arrest of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and three Hamas leaders.
On Monday morning, Clooney and the panel of legal experts published a report in which they shared that they were asked to provide an opinion on whether there were reasonable grounds to believe that the Israeli and Hamas leaders had committed war crimes. In the report, the panel declared that it agrees with Khan’s assessment.
In a statement shared on the site for the Clooney Foundation for Justice, Clooney wrote that she served on this panel because she believes “in the rule of law and the need to protect civilian lives.”

The International Criminal Court issued applications for arrest warrants on Monday against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, and several other Israeli and Hamas officials on war crimes charges and allegations of crimes against humanity.
The court alleges that both Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack against Israel, in which more than 1,000 Israelis were killed and hundreds kidnapped, as well as Israel’s retaliatory offensive against the Gaza Strip and blockade of aid to Palestinians were conducted in violation of international law. More than 34,000 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza.

After Jean-Luc Godard, Leos Carax is probably the French filmmaker most associated with the term enfant terrible. In some ways, he’s been even more terrible than Godard ever was, adopting a pseudonym (he was born Alex Dupont) as a teenager and bursting onto the scene at age 24 with Boy Meets Girl — Godard made Breathless when he was 30 — which immediately turned him into a major young auteur to be reckoned with.
He followed that up with the powerful, AIDS-inspired Mauvais Sang, and then made The Lovers on the Bridge, a film infamous for being a French Heaven’s Gate that went way over budget and flopped (it’s still a fantastic movie). After that Carax disappeared for a while, then reemerged to make a few shorts, compose pop songs and shoot a new feature every decade, the last one being the Adam Driver-Marion Cotillard starrer, Annette.

On Saturday night, nonbinary Swiss rapper Nemo won the iconic Eurovision Song Contest held in Malmö, Sweden.
The coronation happened just hours after Irish Eurovision contestant Bambie Thug called to disqualify Israeli singer Eden Golan from the music competition. Organizers moved Golan and Israel’s delegation into a separate room after facing criticism from pro-Palestine activists.
Pro-Palestine protesters held demonstrations in Malmö, Sweden, where the competition was held. Israel’s participation in the music competition sparked criticism and controversy after over 30,000 Palestinians have been in the ongoing Gaza war after a surprise attack by Hamas killed 1,200 Israelis.
During Golan’s performance, Bambie Thug claimed Israeli commentators violated the contest’s rules. The singer did not file an official complaint against Golan to be disqualified. Golan and Bambie Thug were separated as Bambie Thug was said to be “mad at Israel.”

Ari Emanuel, the CEO of Endeavor and one of Hollywood’s most outspoken voices in the fight against antisemitism, will be honored at the Simon Wiesenthal Center’s National Tribute Gala.
At the annual fundraiser for Swc, which has taken place since 1977 and brings together many of the most powerful and influential people in the business, Jews and non-Jews alike, Emanuel will receive the organization’s highest honor, the Humanitarian Award, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
Emanuel, 63, will be feted by colleagues — and give an acceptance speech — at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel on May 22. Members of the public can purchase tickets to attend, starting at $1500 a plate, but, in a first, the event will be closed to the press.

Israel participated in the Eurovision Song Contest on Thursday evening, as thousands of pro-Palestinian demonstrators gathered in the host city of Malmo, Sweden, to protest against the country’s participation in the competition.
The Israeli entry Eden Golan was booed during a rehearsal of her song Hurricane on Wednesday, but she was greeted with cheers – if not quite as euphoric as for some other acts – during Thursday evening’s semi-final, and was voted through to Saturday’s Grand Final.
The Jerusalem Post reports that, prior to the second semi-final, Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu wished Golan good luck in a video.
In his statement, Netanyahu said, “Eden, I want to wish you success, but you have already succeeded. You not only face Eurovision n a proud and impressive way, but you successfully face a wave of anti-semitism while standing and representing the State of Israel with respect.”

Joe Biden sat for an interview with a mainstream, national news outlet, — a not-too-common occurrence. And while the clear intent in his chat with CNN’s Erin Burnett was to show a contrast with Donald Trump on the economy, the headline was what the president said about Israel.
“I made it clear that if they go into Rafah — they haven’t gone into Rafah yet — but if they go into Rafah , I am not supplying the weapons that have been used historically to deal with Rafah, that deal with the cities, that deal with that problem,” Biden said. “We’re going to continue to make sure Israel is secure in terms of Iron Dome and their ability to respond to attacks… but it’s just wrong. We are not going to supply the weapons and artillery shells that have been used” by the Israelis.

Joe Biden sharply condemned the rise of antisemitism in the United States, including incidents that have played out on college campuses amid pro-Palestinian protests.
Speaking at a Capitol Hill event to commemorate Holocaust Remembrance Day, Biden also warned that “people are already forgetting” that it was Hamas “that unleashed this terror” in the attack on Israel on Oct. 7.
“It was Hamas who brutalized Israelis. It was Hamas who took and continues to hold hostages,” Biden said. “I have not forgotten nor have you, and we will not forget.”
Cable news networks carried Biden’s remarks, briefly breaking away from coverage of Stormy Daniels’ testimony in Donald Trump’s hush money case.

But in the event that Israel blocks them, boards them, and detains them — or worse — they hope their efforts will inspire international outcry and put more pressure on Israel to end its war in Gaza and blockade around the territory.

The contrast between Donald Trump on Univision last year and Joe Biden on Univision Tuesday was night and day, but the result was still pretty much the same.

The Israeli Defense Forces has fired two officers it charges with having misidentified a convoy of seven World Central Kitchen staffers who were killed by Israeli airstrikes earlier this month. The international aid organization called the decision “cold comfort,” in the face of Israel’s failure to make concrete commitments to improve the safety of humanitarian workers and civilians in Gaza.
In a statement issued Friday, the Idf released the preliminary findings of its investigation into the killings, in which successive airstrikes were used to target three vehicles carrying the Wck staffers in Gaza.

Following Israel’s killing of seven humanitarian aid workers in Gaza, President Joe Biden warned Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that “U.S. policy with respect to Gaza will be determined by our assessment of Israel’s immediate actions” regarding U.S. demands for Israel to take concrete steps to address the humanitarian crisis in the besieged region.

President Joe Biden told Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that an immediate ceasefire was needed in Gaza “to stabilize and improve the humanitarian situation and protect innocent civilians,” the White House said today.
The president urged Netanyahu to “empower his negotiators to conclude a deal without delay to bring the hostages home.” Negotiations for a ceasefire have hinged on Hamas releasing hostages.
Biden spoke by phone to Netanyahu for about 30 minutes, following an Israeli strike that killed seven aid workers for chef José Andrés’ World Central Kitchen.
Biden also told Netanyahu that Israel had to “announce and implement a series of specific, concrete, and measurable steps to address civilian harm, humanitarian suffering, and the safety of aid workers,” according to the White House. The president also signaled a potential policy shift, as he “made clear that U.S. policy with respect to Gaza will be determined by our assessment...

One day after President Joe Biden said he was “outraged and heartbroken” over an Israel Defense Force attack that killed seven World Central Kitchen team members distributing food in Gaza, Wck founder José Andrés gave an emotional interview to Reuters in which he said, “What I know is that we were targeted deliberately, nonstop until everybody was dead in this convoy.”
Israel has expressed “extreme sorrow” over the deaths, and the country’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the attack on aid workers was not intentional.
Asked if he believed that official explanation, the celebrity chef responded, “Initially, I would say categorically no,” reiterating that Wck communicated its movements to the Idf, it was in a zone controlled by the Idf and the convoy was clearly marked with his organization’s logo posted even on the roofs of some vehicles.

In the wake of the Israeli parliament approving the law, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed to shutter Al Jazeera, saying it “will no longer be broadcast from Israel.”

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu did not take kindly to Sen. Chuck Schumer’s (D-n.Y.) speech on the Senate floor last week where he called for Israel to hold elections once the current assault on Gaza winds down.
“What he said is totally inappropriate. It’s inappropriate to go to a sister democracy and try to replace the elected leadership there,” the Israeli prime minister said in an interview on CNN’s State of the Union that aired Sunday.
“That’s for the Israeli people to decide. I think it’s ridiculous.

Bassem Youssef is an Egyptian-American comedian, television host, and even a surgeon. He is best known for hosting Al Bernameg, a satirical news show that tackled Egyptian politics with humour. This was the first show of its kind in the region, and it became hugely popular, garnering millions of viewers weekly.

Bassem Youssef’s career trajectory from a cardiothoracic surgeon to a renowned comedian and satirist is indeed remarkable. His ability to use humour to tackle sensitive political issues, particularly in the Middle East, has earned him a significant following and recognition on the global stage.
Youssef’s satirical approach, akin to Jon Stewart’s style, allows him to dissect complex political narratives and challenge authority with sharp wit and insight.

Once the Republican Party officially nominates Donald Trump for president for a third time, U.S. intelligence officials intend to brief Trump on national security matters despite the risk of him exposing confidential information.
Trump has already faced legal trouble when his Mar-a-Lago home was found to contain thousands of classified documents, which were illegally stored there, during an FBI raid. The Biden administration says they will share intelligence with Trump regardless of the outcome of his Florida trial.
Briefings are not legally required but have been a tradition since 1952. Candidates of both major political parties are briefed on some of the biggest threats to the United States. Candidates may be briefed on several meetings, though usually only one.
Some risks associated with Trump include his close ties to foreign leaders such as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Trump has disclosed confidential information about an Israeli intelligence operation to senior Russian officials.

Oscar Awards Ceremony Delayed By Pro-Palestine Protesters, Celebrities Forced To Walk To The Theater
Before the 96th Academy Awards ceremony, pro-Palestine activists blocked roads to the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles where the Oscars are held.
Footage posted to X showed protestors chanting on Highland Avenue and De Longpre Avenue. Black escalades transporting Academy Award attendees, including singer-songwriter Ariana Grande, were forced to stop. Some Academy Award attendees were seen walking to the venue to avoid traffic.
“The Oscars sponsored by baby killers,” one sign said.
Another sign showed, “Hollywood’s silence is violence.”
Riot police swarmed to the scene and formed a perimeter around the Dolby Theater. Police apprehended some protesters while others were forced to leave. Once the streets were cleared, vehicles continued to move to the venue.

Jonathan Glazer’s searing Oscars acceptance speech, in which the Zone of Interest filmmaker referenced the Israel-Gaza conflict and said that he refuted his “Jewishness and the Holocaust being hijacked by an occupation,” has led to a fierce reaction on social media.
In his prepared speech accepting the 2024 Academy Award for best international film, Glazer thanked his partners on The Zone of Interest, a haunting film about Auschwitz and the Holocaust, and then made a statement addressing both his work and a reference to the Israel-Gaza conflict. “All our choices were made to reflect and confront us in the present, not to say, ‘Look what they did then’; rather, ‘what we do now,'” Glazer said. “Our film shows where dehumanization leads at its worst. Progressive groups are launching a coalition to defend lawmakers targeted by America’s top pro-Israel lobby and counter its sway in Congress.
The American Israel Public Affairs Committee, or Aipac, is a powerhouse Washington influence machine. Bankrolled in large part by Republican megadonors, the group has the resources to tip elections, spends millions on lobbying, and wields its supporters as a potent grassroots activist army in Congress.
This year, Aipac is reportedly prepared to spend $100 million to defeat candidates who are “insufficiently supportive of Israel,” as Politico put it.

At the 96th Academy Awards, Jonathan Glazer's "The Zone of Interest" was nominated for both Best Picture and Best International Picture. It won the latter at the time of publication, with Glazer himself accepting the award. "The Zone of Interest" is an English picture, but it's set in Poland and Germany. The titular "Zone" is the Auschwitz concentration camp. "The Zone of Interest" follows the Höss family, the real-life Nazis living in a villa outside the camp; the patriarch Rudolf was the camp's commander and bizarrely, real life had the happier ending here: we don't see it in the film, but Höss was hung for his atrocities in 1947.
A common question asked about the Holocaust is how people who were there could have let an industrial-scale pogrom happen. "The Zone of Interest" answers that by showing the Nazis' point of view, and its answer? It happened like all other...
