Luxury home entertainment tech company Kaleidescape — which develops and sells high-tech movie players and servers that deliver studio content to homes — is expanding into the cinema business with a sort of “on demand” service for library titles.
In doing so it aims to make older titles more accessible in theaters and open up ancillary revenue opportunities for content owners and exhibitors by attracting more moviegoers.
“We have an ability to bring all this wonderful content back to the big screen,” says Priscilla Morgan, chief operating officer of Kaleidescape. “It’s servicing all the empty screens out there. The exhibitor can curate different themes and be able to service their customers on demand.”
Per the plan, Mountain View, Calif.-based Kaleidescape would sell its hardware to theater owners, prep and supply the encrypted content, and “not take a cut so all the economics stays between the studio and the exhibitor,” explains Morgan.

Ryan Kavanaugh has a new podcast about failure. By his own admission, he’s got “plenty of failure stories to tell.” The once high-flying thirtysomething mogul quickly turned into a Hollywood pariah when his Relativity Media sputtered into bankruptcy in 2015. Though he co-financed more than 200 films including “The Social Network,” “Mama Mia!” and “The Fighter,” he is best remembered for his foibles. Now 49, he’s quietly staging a comeback, producing influencer-led films like the upcoming Bryce Hall-50 Cent satire “Skill House.” And he boasts a majority stake in the video platform Triller, a TikTok rival that was poised to go public in 2021, never did, but may still.
With the podcast “Failure,” which bows today from Manifest Media, Kavanaugh sits down with a range of guests — from Hollywood rabbis to influencers with mega-followings to, yup, Nigel Lythgoe — to explore the dynamic of why public failures can lead to redemptive triumphs over 24 episodes.

Director Neill Blomkamp has been doing the press rounds recently to promote his new film Gran Turismo (read our review Here), and he doesn’t seem particularly enthusiastic when interviewers mention his first movie District 9 – which was up for multiple Oscars, including Best Picture. An interview with Uproxx got a lot of attention when it sputtered out after the interviewer tried to talk about District 9 and Blomkamp’s scrapped Aliens sequel, with Blomkamp saying along the way “I guess I am tired of talking about (District 9)”. Two and a half years ago, Blomkamp announced that he was working on a script for the sequel District 10 with Sharlto Copley and Terri Tatchell… but in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, he doesn’t sound very interested in pursuing it, even if he admits that it will probably get made at some point.

New Delhi, Aug 10 (Ians) Despite reports that the “metaverse-hype” is slowing down, the metaverse could reach up to $900 billion by 2030, a report said on Thursday.
According to new research by Bain & Company, companies that engage in the metaverse’s early stages of development, known as the “seed stage”, over the next five to 10 years, are more likely to become the market winners.
“As the metaverse quickly evolves, we’ve already seen these types of technologies take hold within different industries,” Chris Johnson, a partner in Bain’s Technology practice, said in a statement.
“A good example of this is immersive gaming platforms, which are already boasting hundreds of millions of monthly active users. And while it’s not immediately clear how the metaverse landscape will shift, our research shows there are five competitive battlegrounds that executives should be considering if they wish to get ahead and eventually scale,” Johnson added.

Guy Maddin’s 1988 feature directorial debut, Tales from the Gimli Hospital, finds the Canadian auteur’s delightfully perverse sensibilities already fully formed. Given the film’s mix of surreal black-and-white imagery, subversive sexuality, and offbeat comedy, as well as its success on the midnight movie circuit, the comparisons to David Lynch’s Eraserhead were inevitable. And yet, anyone who’s seen even a single one of Maddin’s later work can instantly tell that this film couldn’t have sprung from the subconscious of any other filmmaker.
Maddin’s obsession with obscure Canadian folklore is evident right from the get-go, with a title card informing the audience about the 1865 eruption of Askja, a quiescent volcano, that caused many Icelanders to immigrate to Gimli, a small town in Manitoba, Canada. What follows is, like many of the directors other films, a deliriously playful fusion of fact and fiction, with each “historical...

Derek Luke always knew he wanted to be a hero — or rather, play one. But when the opportunity for him to join the Marvel universe arose in 2011’s “Captain America: The First Avenger,” he wasn’t so sure — even after his agent, the late Ed Limato, insisted.
“If he sent me something, he would say, ‘Do you like it? Alright we’ll get him next time, kiddo, no pressure,’” Luke says. “This was the only script that he said, ‘You need to do this. And I’m like, ‘No. Absolutely not. First of all, Marvel, like, what is that?’”
Limato was firm, so Luke took a meeting with Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige. Upon entering his office, Luke’s eyes were drawn to a section of the wall full of Black characters, ones he didn’t even know existed. Luke leaned in and took the role.

In 2009, Neill Blomkamp crafted a one-of-a-kind directorial debut with his brilliant "District 9," a film that plays out like a routine action flick but also functions as a layered socio-political allegory about xenophobia. With no shortage of dystopian sci-fi dramas that focus on alien invasions, "District 9" could have easily been lost in the shuffle due to its similar premise. However, what elevates Blomkamp's debut above standard genre fare is the gritty specificity of the film's world, which consistently manages to feel evocative of our own despite teeming with CG aliens and VFX-amped environmental elements. Instead of posing the extraterrestrials as an overt threat, the film presents them as a dwindling, malnourished race, trapped on Earth, forced to be treated as an underclass, and forever at the mercy of Multi-National United (Mnu). Here, the local enforcers exploit the alien settlement, mock their appearance and modes of communication, and instigate violent retaliation time and again.

NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal moonlights as DJ Diesel, and he compares the rush of performing live onstage to playing on the basketball court.
“It’s like being in a basketball game and having people come and cheer you on and support you,” the 50-year-old Inside the NBA analyst told The Hollywood Reporter ahead of his performance at his annual pre-Super Bowl extravaganza, Shaq’s Fun House, which took place Saturday night.
“I just want everybody to have a good time,” he added.
But while the icon has released four rap albums in the past — including the 1993 platinum success Shaq Diesel — he’s not looking to drop more projects.
“No,” he simply said when asked if he would release an album based on his DJing.

In new court documents filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court, Anne Heche’s ex-boyfriend James Tupper objected to her 20-year-old son, Homer Heche Laffoon’s request for the court to “expand his authority” over his mother’s estate, according People. In the report published on Monday, Tupper also claimed Laffoon treated his and Heche’s son, 13-year-old son, Atlas, poorly.
In the documents, Tupper alleged that Homer “has acted in a hostile manner” towards Atlas and “has refused to communicate with him or his representatives at all.”

The battle for control over Anne Heche‘s estate gained some focus on Tuesday when the judge ruled at her estate hearing that her eldest son, Homer Heche Laffoon, can oversee the estate for now.
The ruling comes less than a week after Homer filed legal documents, obtained by Et, claiming the “Six Days, Seven Nights” star had only 400,000 to her name at the time of her death. Those same docs state that Heche lived in an apartment and that she did not own any property.
The documents also state that Heche was working on a book titled Call Me Anne, which “is still on track to be released in early 2023.” Back in September, the book’s publisher and distributor — Viva Editions and Simon & Schuster — announced the 140-page memoir will be released Jan. 24, 2023.

There may be a change to Ryan Grantham's reality behind bars. The former Riverdale actor was recently sentenced to life in prison in Canada with the possibility of parole in 14 years, after he pled guilty in the 2020 murder of his mother, Barbara Waite. Now that the sentence has been decided, Grantham's lead counsel Chris Johnson exclusively tells E! News that while the case "is completed now," there is a request they plan to seek. Johnson says in a Sept. 27 statement, "The lawyers plan to send a request to the director of prisons asking to them consider sending Ryan to a medium security facility instead of a max security facility." While the question of which facility...

“Riverdale” alum Ryan Grantham has been sentenced to life in prison after pleading guilty to the 2020 murder of his mother.
The 24-year-old, Vancouver-based actor previously appeared in “Supernatural,” “iZombie,” and “Diary of a Wimpy Kid.” He killed his mother Barbara Waite in March 2020 in their Squamish, British Columbia home by shooting her with a handgun. Waite was battling cancer at the time of her death. Grantham pleaded guilty the day of the murder on March 31, and has been in prison since April 1, 2020.
On September 23, 2022, Grantham was sentenced to life in prison on a second degree murder conviction. Justice Kathleen Ker ruled Grantham must serve 14 years behind bars before becoming eligible for parole. Psychiatrists concluded Grantham was suffering from a “major depressive disorder and a cannabis use disorder” at the time of the murder.

Vancouver actor Ryan Grantham, 24, has been sentenced to life in prison for the 2020 murder of his mother.
The life prison term is mandatory for Grantham’s second degree murder conviction, and Justice Kathleen Ker ruled he must serve 14 years behind bars before becoming eligible for parole, according to Chris Johnson of Vancouver legal firm Johnson Doyle Nelson & Anderson, who represented the young actor at his sentencing before the British Columbia Supreme Court on Wednesday.
Granthan had roles in a number of Vancouver-shot TV series and telefilms, including Riverdale, Supernatural and iZombie. Johnson said Grantham has been in prison since April 1, 2020 and during that period had been assessed by two court-appointed psychiatrists.

The stakes have gotten a lot higher with the 4400.
On 4400 Season 1 Episode 5, there's a new man in charge. Jharrel and Keisha are intent on keeping the 4400 safe, but it may not be easy.
Things are shifting, but they may not be for the best.
It was only a matter of time before the federal government got involved.
Bill Green (Chris Johnson) showing up for Phase 2 was reminiscent of the original series. He set an ominous, smarmy sort of dread that hasn't been felt until now. Green only wants to create the illusion of freedom so that he can continue to monitor the returnees.
Whatever caused the green lights and took/brought back the 4400, it seems less dangerous than this guy.
When has the government done anything for us folk without a catch?

With less than one month before NATO’s conference is due to kick off in Las Vegas on August 23, every major studio and a number of distributors were set to present upcoming slates at the show besides Disney (and therefore Fox), and are monitoring the pandemic’s trajectory on a daily basis.

In the latest setback for an already struggling film industry, Regal, the second-largest U.S. movie theater chain, is closing its theaters two months after reopening. It’s a decision, made in response to the delay of “No Time to Die,” that underscores the immense fallout surrounding the fact that moviegoing just isn’t a popular activity during a pandemic.
It’s unclear at this point if other major operations like AMC Theatres or Cinemark will follow suit. Cineworld, Regal’s parent company, is also shuttering locations in the U.K. For independently owned and operated theaters, many of which are in small towns across the country, the pressure has been mounting for some time now, with many concerned about their chances for survival in a world without exciting new movies to offer. Many have scaled back hours and limited the number of days they are open. Others, like Regal,...

It’s no surprise that politics took center stage at this year’s GLAAD Media Awards.
While Rachel Maddow accepted her award for outstanding TV journalism segment for her interview with Pete Buttigeig on “The Rachel Maddow Show,“ she said, “We are at a point where an openly gay TV host can accept an award for an interview with an openly gay major presidential candidate. Progress in this country is very rarely linear, and it barely happens on its own. If you are at all inspired by the progress you see, please vote, organize, run for office, and if you’re enraged by the regression that you see, please vote, organize and run for office.”
Since 1990, GLAAD Media Awards has celebrated the visibility of LGBTQ experiences in media and honored accurate and inclusive representations of queer people or color. In lieu of its usual glamorous setup in New York City,...
