“Survivor 45” made history once again last week as Kaleb Gebrewold successfully played his Shot in the Dark to a unanimous vote against him, breaking the record with 11 votes cast for him, two more than when Kelley Wentworth back in “Survivor: Second Chance” played an immunity idol negating nine votes against her. Let’s break down what events transpired that led up to this groundbreaking moment as the tribes converged to one beach.
After the ouster of Brando Meyer in the last episode, Kendra McQuarrie was on the warpath and wanted revenge on Emily Flippen for lying to her, and siding with the Reba duo of Austin Li Coon and Drew Basile. The next day, right before the boats arrived to pick the tribes up to unite with everyone, Bruce Perreault was able to find the new Lulu idol underneath the shelter and shared it with the whole tribe, minus Katurah Topps.

Since the creation of the Shot in the Dark twist at the start of the “new era” that began with “Survivor 41,” several castaways have tried using the one-in-six advantage to save their ailing games, but no one ever had luck on their side. Until now. Warning: this article contains spoilers from “Survivor 45,” Episode 6, so read at your own risk!
After the remaining 13 players attended a group tribal council in the pre-merge phase of the game, Kaleb Gebrewold knew he was in danger. He tried pegging J. Maya Krishnan-Jha as a bigger threat, but it didn’t seem to work. One by one, each player went to the cast their votes and all of them wrote down Kaleb’s name. Kaleb, having been warned by Emily Flippen that his game was hanging from a thread, didn’t vote and instead opted to play his Shot in the Dark.

‘Survivor 45’ sneak peek video: Sabiyah gaslights Emily about her non-vote at tribal council [Watch]
During last week’s second episode of “Survivor 45,” the Lulu tribe lost immunity once again and had to visit Jeff Probst at tribal council. As it turns out, two of the five tribe members couldn’t vote, which meant only three people cast votes. Jeff ended up reading two of those votes aloud before declaring, “That’s enough,” and now Emily is questioning the math of it all. Watch the “Survivor 45” sneak peek video above.
“Tribal council went relatively well,” Emily tells the camera. “But I was really confused because Jeff read my vote — I had voted for Brandon — a second vote, and then said ‘Brandon, you’re voted out.’ And, according to my math, knowing that Brandon did not have a vote, there should have been four total votes. So that made me think that maybe there weren’t four votes, maybe there were only three votes.”

After 44 seasons and 23 years on the air, “Survivor” is finally updating its sit-out rule.
“It used to be that the sit-out would reset after a tribal council,” host Jeff Probst informed the “Survivor 45” castaways during Wednesday night’s second episode. “So here’s the new rule. You cannot sit out of back-to-back challenges, period. So whoever sits out of this challenge will run in the next challenge. Make sense?”
The rule change is a direct result of what happened in “Survivor 44,” when Claire Rafson sat out of three consecutive challenges, resulting in her tribe voting her out unanimously. The audience uproar prompted Probst to announce on his “On Fire” podcast last spring that the rule “does need to be updated.”

The poll results are in and there is one name that tops the list of over two-thirds of voters: Frannie Marin! The only other castaway to earn more than 10% of the vote is Matthew Grinstead-Mayle, the adventurous superfan that left the game by choice due to a shoulder injury. (Note that we did not include Bruce Perreault as an option because Jeff Probst has already invited him back.)

Following this week’s elimination of Frannie Marin from “Survivor 44,” only seven castaways remain in the game to be named Sole Survivor. That means 11 other players have already fallen by the wayside, either voted out of the game or evacuated for medical reasons. Setting aside Bruce Perreault, who Jeff Probst has already invited to play again, we want to know which of the other 10 eliminated players You think is deserving of a second chance in an All-Stars season? Vote in our “Survivor 44” poll below.

After being put in “Survivor” no-vote hell for the first 13 days of the game, Matt Blankinship is finally able to cast a vote at tribal council, and he can’t wait to finally play. In CBS’s “Survivor 44” episode 7 sneak peek video (watch above), Matt reminds viewers how he got into this predicament in the first place, and how his ever-evolving showmance with Frannie Marin is keeping him going on the island.

The Survivor universe is both big and small. Claire Rafson met some alums at a watch party and addressed being pictured with fan-favorite Oscar “Ozzy” Lusth.
What is Ozzy Lusth doing now after ‘Survivor’? Oscar ‘Ozzy’ Lusth | Timothy Kuratek/CBS via Getty Images
Lusth first appeared on Survivor: Cook Islands, where the tribes were split by ethnicity. He was on the Aitutaki tribe with other Hispanic American castaways. Lusth stood out for being likable and having fantastic survival skills.
He was runner-up and immediately returned for Survivor: Micronesia as one of the returning castaways going against fans. The former waiter and photographer played again in Survivor: South Pacific and Survivor: Game Changers. He never won the game.
The former reality star’s life after the show includes making public appearances. His Instagram is full of pictures of him enjoying the outdoors and building things as if he had never left the show.

CBS has released yet another deleted scene from “Survivor 44” Episode 5, this time focusing on Josh Wilder. The 34-year-old surgeon from Atlanta started out the game on the Soka tribe, where he was sitting between two dominant pairs. Then he switched over to Tika, where he became a target between the sometimes-friendly, sometimes-warring Yamil “Yam Yam” Arocho and Carolyn Wiger.
On Day 11, Josh gives some insights into his thinking process after the tribe receives tree-mail about the impending immunity challenge (watch above). Yam Yam reads the parchment aloud: “Nothing comes between friends as annoying as a piece of rope. If you are the one dragged to the end, a gentle touch is your only hope.”

The Survivor Season 44 premiere showed a lot of promise for the fourth installment of the reality competition series’ “new era,” but since then, fans have pointed out flaws in the show’s format. There are too many advantages and idols (and fake idols) at play in the game, and only women have been voted out. But hopefully, things will turn around soon, and by the time the finale arrives, we’ll be talking about how great Survivor Season 44 was.

In recent years, Survivor has made strides to provide better representation. Season 44’s Tika Tribe made history but left some big personalities’ games in a tough position before the merge.
[Spoiler alert: This article contains spoilers from Survivor 44 Episode 4, “I’m Felicia.”]
‘Survivor 44’ started with 6 members of the LGBTQ community
The season began with 18 players split into three tribes. Six of them are in the LGBTQ community.
Matthew Grinstead-Mayle is a 34-year-old barbershop owner. In the first episode, he talked about his husband Dale and their 4-year-old son Jasper. Matthew took the lead in building Ratu’s camp since he had the most knowledge.
Josh Wilder, Claire Rafson, Frannie Marin started on Soka. Frannie made a possible love connection with Matt Blankinship on that tribe.
Carolyn Wiger and Yamil ‘Yam Yam’ Arocho started on Tika. Yam Yam talked about having an advantage over other players. He’s from Puerto Rico and is used to the humidity. The salon owner said he’d...

At the start of “Survivor 43” it was looking like series history would be made if they had become the first season to vote five women out in a row. Thankfully they dodged setting what would have been an unfortunate record, but sadly “Survivor 44” is already in the same position. Setting aside the medevac of Bruce Perreault on Day 1, four women have once again been the first four voted out of a “Survivor” game. If the players extend it to a fifth next week, they will make history as the first and only cast to eliminate five women out in a row.
As things stand, the game will remain in the three tribe format for at least one more episode. Ratu voted Maddy Pomilla out first, Tika is responsible for sending home both Helen Li and Sarah Wade, and Soka ousted Claire Rafson after she sat her out for three straight immunity challenges.

Heading into the fourth episode of “Survivor 44,” the Tika tribe was still at a numbers disadvantage as they only had four people left, compared to five each for Ratu and Soka. Real immunity idols and fake immunity idols were also running rampant on the island, setting the stage for some exciting tribal councils to come. Gold Derby’s odds predicted that Kane Fritzler or Sarah Wade would be the next person to have their torch snuffed by Jeff Probst, but what actually happened on Wednesday night?

After watching another woman leave Survivor 44 during episode 3, one thing became clear to fans — the “new era” has a gender problem. Survivor 43 began with four women voted out before a man left the game. And season 44 followed suit, with three women eliminated before a man exited during Tribal Council. So why are women more in danger of going pre-merge? And is there a way for CBS to fix this issue in future Survivor seasons?

CBS has released a “Survivor 44” episode 4 sneak peek video that calls into question everything we think we know about the bird cage twist. As a reminder, this season three locked cages containing real immunity idols and fake idols are present at each of the three tribe camps. The cages have already been opened by different castaways, but now, the Tika bird cage appears to have been defaced with sticks in the shape of a red X. Huh?! Watch the video below to see for yourself.
The clip starts out with a close-up of the red X on Day 8. Tribe members Yamil “Yam Yam” Arocho, Carson Garrett, Sarah Wade and Carolyn Wiger are walking through the jungle when they catch a glimpse of the unique site. “What?” Sarah wonders aloud. “We have some little sticks that have been added.”

Survivor producers put a lot of time and effort into making each season. Most of the time, the planning includes twists, challenges, puzzles, etc. And even though Survivor isn’t the most glamorous show, the cast and crew must also deliberate what the castaways will wear during the game. But can the Survivor players pick what clothing they bring to the island?

As Survivor fans have noticed over the seasons, each castaway’s wardrobe coordinates with their starting tribe’s color.
For example, producers gave the Soka tribe in Survivor 44 (pictured above) green buffs, so their color was green. As a result, they each brought with them green-colored clothing. So we know that producers at least inform the players what colors to focus...

Survivor fans know that at least one castaway always stands out among the rest in each episode. Sometimes it’s for a bad reason since they’re getting voted out, but other times it’s because they orchestrated big game moves. Since the premier of Survivor season 44, we’ve been introduced to some pretty unique contestants. Carolyn Wiger makes people tune in for her silly antics, and Dr. Will is continuing to make a name for himself after appearing on other shows like Big Brother 2, and The Price is Right.
However, there’s only one contestant this season who managed the impressive task of raising $150,000 for coronavirus (Covid-19) relief in only two weeks. Her name is Claire Rafson, and she is clearly a force to be reckoned with.

If you’re like me and you’ve seen all 637 episodes of “Survivor,” you’ve heard host Jeff Probst say hundreds of times that tribes with more people must sit out extra players at challenges and that, “You cannot sit out the same person in back-to-back challenges.” In this new era of “Survivor” in which oftentimes there is only a single reward/immunity challenge in each episode, the sit-out rule seems to have vanished. What gives?
Well, as we now know, there was always an asterisk to the rule that stated that the same contestant could not sit out a reward challenge followed by an immunity challenge — in other words, combined challenges didn’t count. That’s why people like Sandra Diaz-Twine (in “Survivor: Winners at War”) and Claire Rafson (in “Survivor 44”) were able to not participate over and over again. Fans have taken to social media to express their unhappiness,...

There were rumblings that Survivor 44 would have two people getting very close. But would that strengthen their chance to win or ruin their game? Showbiz Cheat Sheet talked to Claire Rafson over Zoom on March 16, 2023. She talked about Frannie Marin and Matt Blankinship’s showmance and why she tried to push one of them out of her tribe.
[Spoiler alert: This article contains spoilers from Survivor 44 Episode 3, “Sneaky Little Snake.”]
Claire Rafson was close to Heidi Lagares-Greenblatt and Frannie Marin on ‘Survivor 44’
Q: Was Heidi [Lagares-Greenblatt] your number one? Because I was very curious about who you considered as your number one on that tribe.
Claire: I felt like, and this is how I’m like my social life is, honestly. I feel like I’ve a lot of people I’m very close with. Heidi, I thought, was like somebody I was incredibly close to personally. Me and her, probably other than Frannie, had the closest individual bond, like outside of the game.

Wednesday’s third episode of “Survivor 44” ended in a straight-forward Tribal Council where Claire Rafson was dialed in to the fact that her Soka tribe mates were planning to vote her out. She smartly played her Shot in the Dark advantage, but came up with a “Not Safe” scroll, meaning all votes cast for her still counted. As such, she was voted out in an unanimous 4-0 vote. Read on for her “Survivor 44” exit interview from the end of the episode.
“I got outplayed. I got eliminated,” said Claire at the start of her final confessional. “I’m so sad, but this experience has been everything.” The decision for Soka to target Claire came down to the fact that she had not participated in any of their tribal immunity challenges, leaving the impression that she brought the least to the table in terms of “tribe strength.” She did her best...

Unlike other reality television shows, it can be hard to come by spoilers for Survivor. Multiple sources come forward with “insider” information; most of the time, it’s fake. However, one person surprisingly submitted an accurate bootlist for Survivor Season 42, so we’re inclined to believe them when they say that they know the winner spoilers for season 44.

In episode 2 of “Survivor 44,” unbeknownst to Soka tribe player Matt Blankinship, he got on the radar of his tribe mates because of a visible close connection to Frannie Marin. Despite him not knowing for certain that he’d be in danger, Matt refers to news of a new immunity challenge as the “make or break moment” in the game of “Survivor.” Above, watch the “Survivor 44” episode 2 deleted scene video from “Two Dorky Magnets.”

It’s been several years since “Survivor” has had a genuine showmance, but that’s exactly what seems to be happening at the Soka camp. Matt Blankinship and Frannie Marin bonded on Day 1, and by Day 4 they were whispering sweet nothings into each other’s ears and hopping through the jungle like puppy dogs. Matt and Frannie (Mannie? Fratt?) are smart enough to realize they should keep their distance so they’re not targeted as a power duo. But Claire Rafson has already seen too much for her liking, and deems their relationship a “real liability.”

In last week’s two-hour premiere of “Survivor 44,” the Tika tribe lost a natural leader in Bruce Perreault who was medically evacuated on Night 1 after suffering a head injury during the reward challenge. Remember the old days of “Survivor” when contestants would get major screen time when they chomped down on gross critters like bugs, rats and snails? For the most part, those days seem to be behind us. However, a “Survivor 44” deleted scene from the first episode demonstrates how castaways still like to indulge in their deserted island lifestyle every once in a while. Watch the video above.
The clip begins with Claire Rafson looking at what’s in Heidi Lagares-Greenblatt‘s hand and asking, “Are you sure this is even an earthworm?” Before waiting for an answer, the 25-year old venture capitalist from Brooklyn adds, “Whatever,” and eats the earthworm. “‘Survivor’ bucket list, check. I can go home now,” Claire declares as her fellow Soka tribe mates laugh and applaud her.

In the “Survivor 44” premiere, Soka tribe mates Matt Blankinship and Frannie Marin instantly connected on the basis of a shared sense of humor. Based on that kinship they solidified a Day 1 alliance with one another; on Day 4, an emotionally overwhelmed Matt realizes that he “really, really” likes Frannie. Is a showmance brewing? Above, watch the “Survivor 44” episode 2 sneak peek video for “Two Dorky Magnets.”
After starting the game with back-to-back reward and immunity challenge wins, the Soka tribe is able to kick back on Day 4 with some casual conversation. Matt describes to Claire Rafson how he became estranged from his pet dog due to a recent breakup that happened shortly before filming began. For Matt, the end of his relationship was something he wanted to “leave behind” when coming to the game, but he realized that it’s impossible to not bring along that kind of baggage.

Wednesday’s two-hour premiere of “Survivor” included some major milestones, like the first ever successful draw of a Shot in the Dark scroll, and the introduction of three new twists. But as welcome as those milestones may be, the moments still swirling in our heads are the bruises, blunders and baffling decisions made by the Ratu tribe that all together made the season 44 opener one of the most brain-boggling episodes in series history.
Let’s start with the bruises — all three of them that in total amount to what Kane Fritzler aptly referenced as “unprecedented body damage” at such an early stage of the game.
