Lily Gladstone has impressed the global audience with her iconic portrayal in Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon. Her role of Mollie Burkhart is based on a real-life Osage woman, whose family members lost their lives over oil reserves rights in the oil-rich Oklahoma region.

Now that awards season has come to an end and the dust has settled, it’s time to reflect on the past 10 or so months. There can only be a select group of actors who walk away with an Academy Award each year. For those who may be disappointed that Lily Gladstone failed to take home the Oscar for Best Actress for her performance in “Killers of the Flower Moon,” fear not. While she may not have won the biggest prize, she still wound up winning awards season.
Gladstone, who has shared the fact they are nonbinary and uses both she/they pronouns, has clearly had a massive breakout year. Let us count the ways here:

Despite not winning the best lead actress category at the 2024 Oscars Sunday, Lily Gladstone says she is “feeling the love big time” following the ceremony. Gladstone was neck-and-neck throughout awards season for the honor in a race that was too close to call with Emma Stone, who eventually won the statuette for her amazing performance in Poor Things, and many expressed disappointment over her loss.
Gladstone, nominated for her starring role as Mollie Burkhart in Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon, would have become the first Native American in the history of the Oscars to win the best actress award. But shed no tears for Gladstone, who is feeling much love, “especially from Indian country,” she wrote on X/Twitter. “Better believe when I was leaving the Dolby Theater and walked passed the big Oscar statue I gave that golden booty a little Coup tap,” she added.

The 2024 Oscars are done and dusted, leaving us with the winners for this year. While few lucky ones will be able to call the night a success thanks to their victories, many others walked out of the event empty-handed and with aching hearts. Oppenheimer won big at the award ceremony, taking home several prestigious awards, including Best Picture. However, Oppenheimer’s victory comes at the expense of another incredible film, Killers of the Flower Moon.
Killers of the Flower Moon (2023)
Killers of the Flower Moon was nominated in ten categories at the Oscars, but luck was not on its side as the film didn’t win a single award. Needless to say, fans are extremely disappointed with the outcome as they believe the film deserved to emerge victorious, at least in a couple of categories, especially Best Actress.

This year’s Oscars race was especially the toughest for the Best Actress in a Leading Role category, among others. With some of the most exceptionally talented actresses nominated, including Emma Stone, Lily Gladstone, Sandra Hüller, Carey Mulligan, and Annette Bening, every single one of them deserved this honor.

But the Academy eventually ended up choosing Stone as the winner, and Gladstone was inevitably snubbed from what would have been her first-ever Academy Award for one of the best performances of her life in Killers of the Flower Moon. However, The Amazing Spider-Man actress made sure to acknowledge Gladstone even in a time like that.

The 2024 Oscars came down to one final acting race as the category of Lead Actress arrived just before Best Picture was presented. The highly-anticipated category unveiled that Emma Stone was the winner for her performance in Poor Things. The win marks Emma’s second after her 2017 victory in the category for the film La La Land in which she starred alongside Barbie‘s Ryan Gosling. When it came down to the race in that category, Lily Gladstone was a favored candidate to win for her role in Killers of the Flower Moon. A first-time nominee, Gladstone would have been the first Native American to win in any acting category, achieving a major milestone with her performance as Mollie Burkhart in Martin Scorsese‘s epic film chronicling the Osage murders in Oklahoma. Ultimately, that wasn’t the case as fans took to social media to weigh in on the outcome. See...

Los Angeles, March 10 (Ians) ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ star Lily Gladstone, who’s a huge fan of Cate Blanchett, recently told ‘People’ magazine that she was disappointed when her “ultimate actress” did not win the Academy Award for her role as Elizabeth I in Shekhar Kapur’s 1998 biographical period drama, says The Hollywood Reporter.
“I have idolised Cate Blanchett since I was a teenager. When … she was up for ‘Elizabeth’ at the Oscars and didn’t win, I remember just being really, really upset about that,” this year’s Best Actress Oscar nominee said to ‘People’. “She is my ultimate actress. I think she is the great talent of this generation.”
At the 71st Academy Awards, Blanchett was nominated alongside Fernanda Montenegro, Meryl Streep, Emily Watson and Gwyneth Paltrow, who ultimately won the Oscar for ‘Shakespeare in Love’, notes The Hollywood Reporter.

Lily Gladstone has already made history. When the Piegan Blackfeet and Nez Perce actor received an Oscar nomination for their searing performance in Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon” on January 23, she became the first Native American actor to receive a Best Actress nomination at the Oscars, and the second Native American performer to receive an Oscar nomination overall, after Chief Dan George’s Supporting Actor Nomination for 1970’s “Little Big Man.”
Should Gladstone win the award, it would make them the first Native American performer to ever win an acting Oscar — an incredible achievement, albeit not one that erases the Oscars’ troubled history with Indigenous people. But regardless of what happens, Gladstone’s incredible work in the film as Mollie Burkhart, a real life Osage woman in the 1920s whose husband Ernest (Leonardo DiCaprio) was a conspirator in a series of mass murders of her people — stands...

Indigenous stories aren’t always told with the care, nuance and authenticity they deserve in Hollywood, and, more often than not, their stories aren’t told at all.
While “Killers of the Flower Moon” has certainly prompted discourse within indigenous communities about who should tell what stories, the Osage Nation Congress has unanimously endorsed the creative contributions that Lily Gladstone and Scott George made to the film. The tribal governing body recently passed bills expressing support for their roles in Martin Scorsese’s historical epic. Signed by all 12 members of the legislative branch, the bills became law on Feb. 2.
Scorsese’s film is based on the murdering spree that targeted Oklahoma’s Osage Nation in the early 20th century, which was executed with the intention of stealing the community’s oil wealth. The 96th Academy Awards are just around the corner and we just cannot wait to find out who will take the trophies home. While the audience does have an idea after having watched other award shows recently, the Oscars can always be a bit of a gamble. Undoubtedly, Cillian Murphy is a fan-favorite contender amongst those in the race to win the Best Actor award.

Lily Gladstone, the guest on this episode of The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast, is a trailblazing Native American actress whose breakout performance in Martin Scorsese’s film Killers of the Flower Moon, as an Osage woman named Mollie Burkhart whose oil wealth made her a target of white men during what is known as the “Reign of Terror,” has made her a bona-fide star. Indeed, she has already won the best actress in a motion picture drama Golden Globe Award and the best actress National Board of Review, New York Film Critics Circle and SAG awards; she was nominated for the best actress Critics Choice Award; and she is nominated, in a first for an Indigenous American, for the best actress Academy Award.

Just 30 minutes after final voting for the Screen Actors Guild Awards wrapped up, I made a last-minute switch in my best actress prediction — from Lily Gladstone in “Killers of the Flower Moon” to Emma Stone in “Poor Things.” Let this be a lesson: Second-guessing yourself is seldom a good idea.
Lily Gladstone made history as the first Native American and Indigenous person to clinch an individual SAG Award for her portrayal of Mollie Burkhart, an Osage woman, in Martin Scorsese’s gripping crime saga. With a lead actress (drama) Golden Globe and a SAG Award now under her belt, Gladstone’s award-season momentum continues to be formidable. Historically, only seven performers have failed to win the Oscar after winning the unique combination of Globe and SAG:
1995: Lauren Bacall (“The Mirror Has Two Faces”) lost to Juliette Binoche 2001: Russell Crowe (“A Beautiful Mind”) lost to Denzel Washington (“Training Day...

The 30th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards were filled with memorable moments, from humorous to heartfelt ones. Authenticity was top of mind when Martin Scorsese and his team set about creating the world of “Killers of the Flower Moon.” The Oscar-nominated film, which is in contention for Best Picture, Director, Actress, Cinematography, Film Editing, Production Design, Costume Design, Original Score and Original Song at the Academy Awards, aims to capture the tragic true story of the murders of several Osage in 1921 Oklahoma, and the film’s design team went to great lengths to do service to the tale at hand.

“Killers of the Flower Moon” star Lily Gladstone embraces her monumental responsibility as an Oscar nominee, utilizing her platform to advocate for the Indigenous community and hoping to pave the way for more actors like herself.

And then the Chiefs. There are many ways that you could interpret the name ‘chief.’ It’s not just the name that bothers me. It’s hearing that damn Tomahawk chop. Every time, it’s a stark reminder of what Hollywood has done to us,...

On Saturday night, when Martin Scorsese collected a gold medallion—the honor given by the DGA to all five of its Feature Film nominees—he thanked his cast and crew and Apple for their support in making Killers of the Flower Moon, but he emphasized his thanks to the Osage Nation for their intrinsic role in the making of the film and its success.
“Primarily I have to reach out and thank the Osage Nation themselves,” he said. “I went out there right before Covid hit, only a couple of times, and got to know them a bit, and I realized I had to change the whole script… Without the Osage, without them in front of the camera, and I gotta tell you, behind the camera, and around us all the time, this certainly would not be the picture you see today.”

Editor’s note: This interview was originally published on December 5, 2023 as part of our 2023 IndieWire Honors ceremony package, which celebrated 11 filmmakers, creators, and actors for their achievements in creative independence. This interview has been lightly updated to reflect Lily Gladstone’s recent Best Actress nomination.
Lily Gladstone thrives on the unexpected. For instance, she’ll happily answer the usual questions — like, oh, what was it like working with iconic Hollywood actors like Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro on Martin Scorsese’s lauded “Killers of the Flower Moon”? — but she’ll really light up when you ask her something a little different. More like, what was it like working with so many fellow Native and Indigenous talents on that same film?
“It is incredible to have had [that experience] on ‘Reservation Dogs,’ it’s incredible to have had it on ‘Fancy Dance,’” she said during a November interview with IndieWire. “It was...

Apple Original Films has landed the global rights to “Fancy Dance,” which made its debut at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival. The drama, starring Lily Gladstone, marks the feature directorial debut for Erica Tremblay, who also co-wrote and produced the film.
“Fancy Dance” will debut in theaters and on Apple TV+ this year. The announcement comes on the heels of Gladstone’s Oscar nomination for her performance as Mollie Burkhart in Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon,” also from Apple.
“Our film ‘Fancy Dance’ has found the perfect home with Apple, and I am thrilled to share this beautiful story of two Seneca-Cayuga women with a global audience.” Tremblay said in a statement. “As a Native American filmmaker, seeing my community included in the rich tapestry of cinema is a dream come true.”

In terms of how many biographical performances they each include, the 2023 and 2024 acting Oscar lineups are staggeringly different. Whereas only two portrayals of real people (Austin Butler as Elvis Presley in “Elvis” and Ana de Armas as Marilyn Monroe in “Blonde”) were recognized last year, a whopping 10 are presently nominated, constituting the highest such rate (50%) in five years. What’s more, this is only the third time in almost a century of Oscars history that real-life characters aren’t outnumbered by fictional ones.
This year’s near-record biographical performance rate ranks only behind the 60% ones of 2016 and 2019. Unsurprisingly, three of the four eventual winners in both previous cases belonged to those majorities. This includes leads Leonardo DiCaprio as Hugh Glass, Rami Malek as Freddie Mercury, and Olivia Colman as Queen Anne as well as supporting players Mark Rylance as Rudolf Abel, Alicia Vikander as Gerda Wegener, and Mahershala Ali as Don Shirley.

Martin Scorsese thinks the length of 'Killers of the Flower Moon' "felt right" despite complaints about the runtime. The 81-year-old filmmaker's epic new movie is over three hours long and he admits that he is at a loss at how to respond to those who think that picture should be shorter.Scorsese told Variety: "I really don't know how to respond to it except for the fact that many people seem to go with it. Some people say, 'I want to see it again.'"Not every film is for every person. Not every novel is for every reader, not every painting, etc. I don't know if it's something that will be universally accepted. This one felt right (at this length), and I felt that while I was watching it. I felt inside of it."Lily Gladstone has been nominated for the Best Actress Oscar for her role...

The 2024 Oscar nominations have been officially revealed, and there were 10 first-time nominees, including Cillian Murphy, America Ferrera, Colman Domingo, Emily Blunt and Lily Gladstone.
Murphy scored a nod for best leading actor for his portrayal of J. Robert Oppenheimer, and Blunt received a nom for best supporting actress for her role of Kitty Oppenheimer in Oppenheimer. The Christopher Nolan-directed film received 11 other nominations.
Gladstone is not only a first-time Oscar nominee but also the first Native American acting nominee. She earned a best leading actress nod for her role of Mollie Burkhart in Killers of the Flower Moon, which scored nine other noms. “It’s long overdue. I feel like it’s circumstantial that it’s me because there have been so many immense, incredible performances,” she told The Hollywood Reporter after learning of her nom. “I stand on the shoulders of some unbelievable talent.”

On Tuesday morning, shortly after receiving the first Native American Lead Actress Oscar nomination, Lily Gladstone told Deadline “I also just know that I’m not going to be the last.”
Gladstone is nominated for her Killers of the Flower Moon role of Mollie Burkhart, an oil-rich Osage woman married to Ernest (Leonardo DiCaprio). When Mollie’s Osage Nation family are systematically murdered for their money, an FBI investigation uncovers Ernest’s terrible deception. The Martin Scorsese film is based on the 2017 nonfiction book The Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI by David Grann.

Lily Gladstone was FaceTiming her parents when her best actress Oscar nomination for Killers of the Flower Moon was announced.
They were both up to watch the announcement, the actress, who portrays Mollie Burkhart in the Apple film, says.
“My mom had the camera flipped around, and she was filming the TV,” Gladstone recalls to The Hollywood Reporter. “And I told her, ‘No mom, I don’t want to learn from like watching it through your phone. I wanna learn on your and dad’s faces.’ Sure enough, I could barely hear my name through the phone, but their reaction told me that it was a nod.”
With her nomination, Gladstone became the first Native American acting nominee in Oscars history. While she may be the first, the actress is certain she won’t be the last and argues that the honor isn’t just for her — it belongs to several people.

Seven out of the 20 acting Oscar nominees across Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress, Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor were represented this year by people of color. For all of them — Lily Gladstone, Danielle Brooks, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, America Ferrera, Colman Domingo, Sterling K. Brown and Jeffrey Wright — it’s their first career Oscar nomination.
That ties with the same number of diverse acting nominees across acting categories at last year’s Oscars, however it’s down from the nine nominees of color in 2020.
Last year those actors of diverse backgrounds counted Brian Tyree Henry for Causeway and Ke Huy Quan for Everything Everywhere All at Once in Best Supporting Actor (the latter won); Ana de Armas for Blonde and Michelle Yeoh for Everything Everywhere All at Once in Best Actress (the latter won), and Stephanie Hsu from Everything Everywhere All at Once, Angela Bassett from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,...

Bright and early on Tuesday morning, Zazie Beetz and Jack Quaid announced the 2024 Oscars nominations live from Los Angeles. With 20 nominees across four acting categories, some names were past nominees and winners — like Jodie Foster, Emma Stone, and Bradley Cooper. The Oscars nominations might not have given everything the people wanted, but diversity in the acting categories had several high points to celebrate.
Lily Gladstone made history as the first Native American nominated for best actress, for her towering role as Mollie Burkhart in the crime thriller “Killers of the Flower Moon.”
Colman Domingo became the first Afro Latino nominated in best actor for his powerhouse performance in the civil rights drama “Rustin.” He’s joined by fellow Black nominee Jeffrey Wright for “American Fiction.” This is only the second time in Oscar history where more than one Black actor, who wasn’t either Will Smith or Denzel Washington, was nominated for the leading prize. The first was the 2004 lineup with Don Cheadle (“Hotel Rwanda”) and eventual winner Jamie Foxx (“Ray”).

On Tuesday morning Gladstone was nominated in the Lead Actress category, making her the first ever Native woman of American descent to be nominated in this category.
If she wins, she will be the first indigenous actress to do so in this category.

Few filmmakers in the annals of cinema have earned the right to take a bow like Martin Scorsese. For nearly 60 years, the maverick storyteller has pushed the limits of his art form and found new ways to leave an indelible mark on the audiences who still show up. So for more than a handful of critics who clapped at my screening when the maestro materialized at the end of Killers of the Flower Moon, it must have seemed like a well-earned mic drop; a chance for Scorsese to take visible ownership of a passion project he’s been shepherding to the screen for the better part of a decade.
Yet my personal reaction to the moment was initial bafflement and a curious melancholy. Staring directly into the camera, the director of Raging Bull and Goodfellas, Taxi Driver and Gangs of New York,...

Lily Gladstone has responded to Devery Jacobs‘ criticisms of Killers of the Flower Moon.
Jacobs previously tweeted that watching the Martin Scorsese drama brought forth deep emotions based on its “unrelenting and unnecessarily graphic” portrayals of the 1920s murders of Osage people.
The film follows the real-life killings of the Osage after oil was found on their land in Oklahoma.
Gladstone won the Golden Globe for her portrayal of Mollie Burkhart, an Osage Nation woman whose family was murdered by her in-laws for oil inheritances.
Gladstone told Rolling Stone in a new interview that Jacobs’ “reaction is a response to a lot of trauma” that Native women endure.
“I don’t want to bring heat back on her for this because I think that’s unfair. Her reaction is hers,” Gladstone said of Jacobs. “We’re friends. I crashed on her couch in Toronto when Certain Women played at TIFF.

Lily Gladstone is defending her Reservation Dogs co-star Devery Jacobs’ right to her opinion about Killers of the Flower Moon, Martin Scorsese’s take on the Osage murders.
The Golden Globe winner briefly addressed the Echo star’s comments about the film, in which Jacobs described the experience of watching it as “hellfire.” The film chronicles the “reign of terror,” a string of unsolved murders by white Americans as part of a plot to steal the wealth of the Osage tribe, which retained the mineral rights, including oil leases, on their reservation.
This was carried out in part by white men marrying women of the tribe and becoming guardians of their Osage partner’s estate. In the film, Gladstone plays Mollie Burkhart, an Osage woman who is targeted alongside her family by her husband, Ernest Burkhart (Leonardo DiCaprio), for their oil headrights on their Oklahoma reservation.

When Lily Gladstone was growing up on the Blackfeet Indian Reservation in rural Montana, acting in plays was an escape from bullies, who targeted her for being “verbose and goofy.” The idea came from her father, a Native man of Piegan Blackfeet and Nez Perce heritage, whom she describes as “a bit of a wizard” and “had me convinced when I was younger that he was able to move clouds.”
“My dad saw early on when I was onstage that I just thrived,” Gladstone says. “When I was nine, it was the worst of it.
