Revel in Ana Lily Amirpour's ‘Bad City' where the luscious chiaroscuro of depravity meets style and substance in the first ‘Iranian vampire western' -coined by the UCLA graduate with her feature directorial debut. Like a deconstructed horror film, “Agwhaan” glides across a spectrum of genres in a way that presents some incredibly visceral iconography that feels eerily familiar but also hauntingly avant-garde all at once.
In the stillness of the night, Arash (Arash Marandi) toils to make ends meet supporting the ills of his heroin-addicted father Hossein (Marshall Manesh). A clash with the village ne'er-do-well, Saeed (Dominic Rains proving the point with the word ‘sex' tattooed on his neck), leaves the former without his car as payment for the arrears Hossein owed the drug dealers. “You’re a Terminator,” Tokyo teen Ani (Miku Patricia Martineau) gapes to Kate (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) after witnessing the bloodshed her kidnapper has brought down on two dozen yakuza now lying shot, stabbed, sizzled on a yakitori grill and very, very dead. Kate, the titular antihero of director Cedric Nicolas-Troyan’s vicious vengeance flick, is a grown-up child assassin trained by her mentor (Woody Harrelson) in the art of death, a fate so common among on-screen orphans that their support group could fill a church basement. Yes, she can rack up quite the Schwarzenegger-esque kill count. But Kate’s Terminator resemblance also includes her left eye’s red and distended pupil, evidence of the polonium poisoning that will kill her in 24 hours. Other symptoms of this gimmick include blistered skin, pounding eardrums, wobbly knees and an urgency to take an entire gangster clan along with her to the grave. There is no cure.

HBO is both a great and slightly regrettable home for Bad Education. When they picked up the movie out of the festival circuit, it was somewhat of a surprise. After all, the flick had gotten some strong awards buzz, especially for star Hugh Jackman. Would they really be going for potential Emmy (and Golden Globe) attention, as opposed to gunning for Oscars? Well, it appears that way, and aside from that unusual quirk, it’s undeniable that they have a quality picture on their hands. This is actually one of the better titles of the year, no matter where you actually see it. The film is a true crime character study, looking at a massive instance of long term fraud in the affluent Long Island city of Roslyn. The school system in the town is among the best in the nation, due in no small part to the work of the Superintendent of the district,...

One of the more beautiful things about being an American is that it’s easy to justify your own success — at least to yourself. This is the land of opportunity, and people are taught from an early age that they get what they deserve, and they deserve what they get; if they weren’t, the injustice of it all might spoil the fun. You don’t necessarily have to earn your good fortune, you just have to believe you’re entitled to it. Needless to say, we are up to that challenge! And we’ll do whatever it takes to keep everything in its right place.
With that in mind, it’s strange that, as Americans, we still tell ourselves that corruption is usually a symptom of greed, as opposed (or in addition) to something that happens when people can’t afford to question their own worth. It’s a red,...

Based on co-writer Brian DeLeeuw’s novel In This Way I Was Saved, Daniel Isn’t Real is the second feature from director Adam Egypt Mortimer (Some Kind of Hate). Dark, disturbing and beautifully made, it takes the basic idea of an evil imaginary friend and twists it into a chilling and intense nightmare that goes to some unexpected places.
Daniel Isn’t Real begins in New York, where eight year old Luke (Griffin Robert Faulkner) gains an imaginary friend called Daniel (Nathan Reid) as a way of coping with both his divorcing parents and the fact that he’s just stumbled upon the aftermath of a mass shooting. However, when Daniel...

Woody Harrelson is joining Mary Elizabeth Winstead in the Netflix assassin thriller “Kate,” directed by Cedric Nicolas-Troyan (“The Huntsman: Winter’s War”).
The story revolves around a female assassin, who, after being poisoned and given less than 24 hours to live, must go on a manhunt through the streets of Tokyo to take vengeance on her murderer before she dies. Umair Aleem wrote the script. Variety first reported that Winstead had come on board in April.
The movie will be produced by Bryan Unkeless, who worked with Winstead on the upcoming DC movie “Birds of Prey,” along with “Hobbs & Shaw” and “Deadpool 2” producer Kelly McCormick and Patrick Newall. “Hobbs & Shaw” director David Leitch is exec producing with Scott Morgan.
Netflix bought the project in 2017 after winning an aggressive bidding war. Netflix has also hired stunt coordinator and second unit director Jonathan Eusebio; special effects make-up designer Damian Martin, who won...

Nestled in between Sundance and Cannes, the Tribeca Film Festival isn’t exactly known for instigating a lot of fancy dealmaking, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t plenty of options. With 103 features screening between April 24 – May 5, the New York gathering contains its fair share of world premieres, many of which arrive sans distribution. Some of them also end the festival that way, too. Here are some of the highlights from Tribeca 2019 that still need homes. Buyers, take note!
“Blow the Man Down”
Bridget Savage Cole and Danielle Krudy’s intriguing feature directorial debut lays out plenty of familiar beats in the guise of a Coen brothers-esque crime comedy, from a bloody murder to a bag of cash, all enlivened by some wonderfully distinct accents, but the pair also find their way to a unique new story that signals their arrival as a filmmaking duo to watch. Cinematographer Lyle Vincent had a great advantage in shooting writer/director Cory Finley’s “Thoroughbreds”: The primary location was a beautiful ’20s-era mansion outside Boston. It’s not often that a single location can supply different looks and settings, and with natural light.
“It was nice because we were there for so long — most of our shoot — so we had flexibility and could plan around the sun,” said Vincent. “I didn’t want to be too precious, or picky, and kind of letting things be natural, rather than adding a ton of light.”
For the film’s interior scenes, natural light that poured in through tall windows served as the primary light source; Vincent let the time of day reflect the mood. Recent advances in Led lighting technology made this minimal approach easier. While Vincent used Arri Sky Panels (s30 and s60) in his commercial work, he’d never used them on a feature.

In Bushwick, New York City resembles a militaristic wasteland. We’re to believe Texas has formed a Southern pact and is leading a new Civil War in the name of secession. It’s a scary reality that brings to light recent current events driven by unjust animosity. A made-up Brooklyn invasion and actual Dallas sniper shooting are horrifyingly similar topics, so you’d think Nick Damici and Graham Reznick’s script would be fueled with warnings, or anger, or revelations. You’d think there’d be something more to raging fires and black-suited militants. You would think – but that’s not the case. Crumbling skylines and Red-Dawn-meets-Purge vibes can only get you so far.
Events kickstart when Lucy (Brittany Snow) arrives in Bushwick with her presumed boyfriend (Arturo Castro). As they walk the subway platform, all train usage is suspended; their station oddly empty. Mr. Boyfriend goes above ground to take a peek,...

Chris here. Despite the largely negative response (including Nathaniel's take) that met Ana Lily Amanpour's The Bad Batch on 2016 festival circuit, color me still excited for the director's follow-up to A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night. At the very least, I've been quite eager to get a look at how her visual and tonal stylings have evolved for this next creepfest - one of our many 2017 forays in cannibalism. However, glimpses at what Amanpour (reuniting with Girl cinematographer Lyle Vincent) has crafted have been scant until this just-released trailer.
The trailer promises ample grimness and Jason Momoa chest gazing between some pretty transfixing visuals. While the trailer focuses on its own star wattage (exciting Keanu Reeves character choice alert!), surprisingly it omits mentioning Jim Carrey's Wtf role in the film. Or is that basically the film's worst kept secret? The Bad Batch opens on June 23!

If the past few months have taught us anything, it’s that not giving a shit about other human beings is the best way to get ahead in life. Empathy is a weakness. It’s a virtue, of course — and hopefully part of our natural condition — but it’s also a weakness. Empathy is one of the few things that money can’t buy, and the only thing that the rich can’t afford. “Thoroughbred,” Cory Finley’s delightfully vicious and mind-bogglingly confident first feature, is a pitch-black comedy about the danger of being around people of privilege when they first start to figure that out.
Set in the affluent suburbs of Connecticut (the word “Greenwich” is somehow never spoken), “Thoroughbred” unfolds like “American Psycho” meets “Heathers” as directed by a young and extremely class-conscious Park Chan-wook. Picking up where “Equus” left off, the story begins as a teenage girl...

“Thoroughbred” is a two character piece set in an imposing residence where the young women, teenagers, come together for tutoring but it quickly develops beyond that into new — and dangerous — territory.Director Cory Finley with stars Olivia Cooke, Anya Taylor-Joy
Emotionally challenged Amanda and contemptuous Lily reboot their childhood friendship after years of instability and judgment, thrown back together by standardized-test tutoring.
When Lily’s icy stepdad, Mark, conspires to ship her off to reform school instead of her dream college, Amanda’s nonchalant quips about killing him suddenly seem enticing. Even as Amanda’s sinister tendencies surface and the girls hatch a plan, the mutual manipulation that has always defined their relationship threatens to derail their ambitions.
They have a history which enables them to confide and challenge and manipulate one another.

“The Bad Batch” turns a completely ridiculous premise — dystopian warfare in a sun-bleached desert filled with cannibals, a raving cult leader, desperate thieves and LSD — into a warm, at times even elegant salute to the transformative power of companionship. This should come as no surprise to anyone familiar with writer-director Ana Lily Amirpour’s sleek debut “A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night,” another creepy premise given fresh life. With “The Bad Batch,” Amirpour pairs elements of “Mad Max” and “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” with western flavor for another beguiling ride. The scale has expanded and there are a few more recognizable faces this time around, but nothing about the movie’s inspired wackiness bears the whiff of compromise.
“The Bad Batch” further solidifies the strength of Amirpour’s idiosyncratic vision, which takes familiar details and bends them into spiky bursts of unpredictability. Whereas the melancholic black-and-white milieu of “Girl...

Ana Lily Amirpour’s second feature shoots for Harmony Korine meets Mad Max and would have nearly almost hit the mark were it not for the gratingly aloof attitude and the swaths of directorial license being taken. The Bad Batch — an ambitious, expansive dystopian sci-fi western which features partying, drugs, and cannibals — might come as music to the ears of diehard fans of films like Spring Breakers and Gummo (a kid doesn’t quite eat spaghetti in a bathtub, but a kid does eat spaghetti after being in a bathtub). However, beneath its dazzlingly hip surface the script and characters leave much to be desired. It’s like taking a trip to Burning Man: a pseudo-spiritual, uniquely punky experience perhaps, but one that’s full of annoying rich kids and ultimately emotionally shallow.

Hailed as one of the best new cinematic discoveries in 2014 is director Ana Lily Amirpour with her debut A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night, a moody vampire noir that premiered in the Next section at the Sundance Film Festival. Scooping up the Gotham Award’s Bingham Ray Breakthrough Director Award and picking up a pair of Indie Spirit Award nominations (including Best First Feature) and wins at international film fests such as Deauville and Sitges, the film opened theatrically in the fall of 2014 to a barrage of critical acclaim. Credited as the first Iranian Vampire Western, Amirpour is operating with a mash-up of vintage tropes, creating an inspired concoction.

Richard Linklater won for Best Director and Patricia Arquette won the Best Supporting actress for team Boyhood, while Iñárritu’s Birdman claimed Best Picture, Best Actor (Michael Keaton) and Cinematographer (Emmanuel Lubezki) at the 30th Film Independent Spirit Awards last night. The split might foreshadow how the Oscars play out tonite, as the Middleweight Saturday ceremony and Heavyweight Sunday gig are more or less interchangeable. The two films that might gain a little further traction from the tent spotlight include Nightcrawler (which picked up Best First Feature and Best Screenplay) and Whiplash, Damien Chazelle’s deservedly won for Best Supporting Actor and Editing categories. Also worth pointing out is a Land Ho! win in the category we love the most: the John Cassavetes Award. Here are the winners and noms.

Just one night before the Oscars take over town, stars flocked to the 2015 Film Independent Spirit Awards on the Santa Monica Beach on Saturday (February 21).
Fred Armisen and Kristen Bell joined forces for co-hosting duties and put on a fabulous show as actors and actresses including Scarlett Johansson, Ethan Hawke, Jessica Chastain, Cate Blanchett, Jared Leto and Emma Stone turned up to lend their star power to the IFC airing ceremony.
As for this year's cream of the crop, Michael Keaton (Birdman), Julianne Moore (Still Alice), J.K. Simmons (Whiplash) and Patricia Arquette (Boyhood) took home top honors in the lead and supporting acting categories.
Meanwhile, in what very well may be an indicator for what's to come tomorrow at the Academy Awards, "Birdman" was recognized as Best Feature while Richard Linklater nabbed Best Director accolades for "Boyhood".

The 2015 Spirit Awards were handed out today and it was Birdman taking Best Feature and Best Actor (Michael Keaton) while Boyhood went home a double winner taking Best Director (Richard Linklater) and Best Supporting Actress (Patricia Arquette). However, while that's the result for the two big guns that will be going head-to-head at tomorrow night's Oscars, Nightcrawler was also a double winner taking Best Screenplay and Best First Feature, both awarded to writer/director Dan Gilroy. Otherwise, no big surprises with Julianne Moore (Still Alice) taking Best Actress and J.K. Simmons (Whiplash) taking Supporting Actor, Citizenfour took Best Documentary and Birdman scored a third win for Emmanuel Lubezki for Best Cinematography. Justin Simien (Dear White People) took home Best First Screenplay and, whoa!, Look!, Whiplash was also a double winner, with Tom Cross winning for Best Editing (well deserved!) and anticipated Oscar winner in the same category, Ida won Best Foreign Language Film.

We here at Sound On Sight believe horror transcends explicit gore, jump scares or supernatural content, which is why you’ll soon notice our list ranges from independent art films to psychological thrillers to parodies, satire and more. Surprisingly, vampires lead the pack this year, along with found footage flicks, but there are a few comedies, one remake and even some strange love stories as well.
Every other year, I’ve published the list of best horror films based solely on my picks, but this year, Sound On Sight editor Justine Smith and Sos contributor Felix Vasquez Jr. also participated. Since we couldn’t agree with what is the best horror film of 2014, we decided to publish the list in alphabetical order. That said, here are our individual picks:

Question. What do The Skeleton Twins, The Better Angels and actor Miles Teller have in common? There’ll always be some head-scratcher surprises and snubs and the 2015 Indie Spirit award nominations are no different. It goes with the territory. As we tend to some wounds, we access those that were criminally overlooked in the key categories. Here is a glance at some of the shoulda, woulda and coulda.

Falling below the 21 million mark set by the Indie Spirit folks, it is indeed an odd year when a major studio release figures among the fives noms. Considering that Ava DuVernay is an indie talent, I didn’t think her film would be part of the equation. That said, it was a given that Boyhood and the more deserving Birdman and Whiplash would all face off. In...

Tuesday morning, nominations were announced for the 30th annual Independent Spirit Awards. Nominees for Best Feature included "Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)," "Boyhood," "Love is Strange," "Selma" and "Whiplash." Films with multiple nominations that didn’t crack the Best Feature include "Obvious Child," "Dear White People," "Nightcrawler," and "Kumiko, The Treasure Hunter." One film that’s notably missing (compared to our predictions): "The Imitation Game." Amid an endless stream of sequels, prequels, franchises and reboots, the idea of an original concept is something of an unknown entity – like a needle in a haystack, you know they’re around, but just so damn hard to find.
Lucky for us, the Sundance title A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night is just the thing to cleanse our palette of the same old song and dance routine Hollywood has been performing as of late. Even luckier for us, the film is has been picked up by distribution company Kino Lorber for theatrical release in North America.
In what is dubbed the first “Iranian Vampire Western,” we have the directorial debut of Ana Lily Amirpour, who led the film to the opening night of the New Directors/New Films festival in New York City. The film follows a seductive female vampire as she prowls the night in search of her victims – and her food.

A stylish and soulful film, A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night is a film of bad men, dangerous women, love and beautiful images. More than just a vampire film, Ana Lily Amirpour crafts an eerie, moody tone poem that’s a fantastic film to watch.
Bad City an industrial town, filled by all matter of folks from the scrupulous to the shady. Arash (Arash Marandi), one such citizen, longs to just get in his nice car and go. Working as a landscaper and living with his junkie father is proving more difficult, when his father runs afoul of a local drug dealer. A local prostitute (Mozhan Marnò) has just turned 30 and wants to escape as well. They all long for better lives, but are unable to move from their station. It’s that time again. The biggest American film festival is upon us, and this year the Ioncinema crew will be descending on Park City with eight feet on the ground and eight eyes on Park City’s various and plentiful screens. Eric Lavallee, Nicholas Bell, Caitlin Coder and I will be covering just about every inch of this year’s festival here at Ioncinema.com, as well as on that ever increasingly vibrant instanews network – Twitter. Be sure to follow @ioncinema and, as stated above, my personal handle @Rectangular_Eye, as we’ll be tweeting throughout the festival with breaking news, reviews, and sightings, all the while trying to keep up with the massive amount of content sure to be coming from this year’s Sundance filmmakers themselves, most of which have their own Twitter accounts and are listed at length below (minus the world & short programs). It seems with part five of our Sundance Twitterverse series, horror fans are taking over the interwebs as if infected with some kind of zombifying virus. Be sure to follow every single one of this raucous bunch as they’re sure to blow up your feed with gloriously distasteful Park City goodness all week.
