Originally a Google Stadia exclusive, Tequila Works and Parallel Circles’ kid Survival Horror title Gylt has been rescued from the now-defunct service, and is now available on PC via Steam, PlayStation and Xbox. Described as an “accessible horror game for fans of the genre and beyond”, Gylt combines familiar Survival Horror tropes such as puzzles, stealth and action sequences, but presents them in such a way that younger horror fans can get into the genre.
The story for Gylt revolves around Sally, a little girl living in Bethelwood. Life hasn’t been easy for Sally, and things haven’t gotten any better since her little cousin Emily disappeared. After being chased by a group of bullies, Sally is dragged into a twisted version of her town where her fears and worse memories are presented in a wicked and very real way. Now, not only has Sally got to find her...

Bob Rice, who teamed with Journey to release a groundbreaking rock music video game and represented top-notch composers like Steve Ouimette, Sascha Dikiciyan and Inon Zur in the industry, has died. He was 79.
Rice died Wednesday night of Copd at an assisted living facility in Santa Clara, California, publicist Greg O’Connor-Read told The Hollywood Reporter.
Rice created and executive produced what was perhaps the first rock video game, “Journey Escape.” Released by Data Age in 1982 for the Atari 2600 console and narrated by Casey Kasem, it featured band members Steve Perry, Neal Schon, Jonathan Cain, Ross Valory and Steve Smith as primitive digitized avatars.
Gamers were tasked in the instructions with guiding each musician “past hordes of Love-Crazed Groupies, Sneaky Photographers and Shifty-eyed Promoters to the safety of the Journey Escape Vehicle in time to make the next concert. Your mighty manager and loyal roadies are there to help, but the escape is up to you!

It’s taken an awfully long time for PlayStation 5 owners to finally get their hands on Devolver Digital’s Carrion, but the day’s finally here. Developer Phobia Game Studio released the PS5 version of their hit reverse horror title yesterday, two years after Carrion first arrived on the PlayStation 4.
Unfortunately, there’s no 20% discount this time around. But $20 for a game that lets you live out your fantasy of John Carpenter’s The Thing with some gloriously gory 2D visuals, it’s definitely worth it. You know we loved it, obviously.
Just in case you need a reminder of what the game is all about (or if for whatever reason you’ve never played it), Carrion is a “reverse horror” game in which you assume the role of an amorphous creature of unknown origin. You stalk and consume those that imprisoned you to spread fear and panic throughout the facility.

For our latest Q&A feature, we caught up with composer Cris Velasco to discuss his work on Resident Evil 7, Hulu's Freakish, and RocketJump's Dimension 404, as well as collaborating with Clive Barker on some of the great imaginer's projects.
Thanks for taking the time to answer some questions for us, Cris. Were you a fan of the horror genre growing up? Did the genre influence your music?
Cris Velasco: Oh yeah, absolutely. I used to watch Hellraiser 1 and 2 with a friend of mine almost every weekend. Chris Young's score became a significant influence on my own music early on.
You’ve worked on a wide range of video games over the years. How did you first get involved with that industry?

With so much of today’s politics surrounding the agency of women, there is no better time for “The Handmaid’s Tale” to emerge as a mirror to society — an outcry against legislation hindering women’s reproductive rights. In anticipation of Hulu’s release of “The Handmaid’s Tale,” Audible has released a special edition of the classic novel starring Claire Danes and featuring new original material written by the novel’s author Margaret Atwood.

Hulu has thrown its own hat in the anthology-series-ring with its new sci-fi series ‘Dimension 404.” A mashup of sorts between the “Twilight Zone” and “Black Mirror” — with a dash of snark — “Dimension 404” looks to deliver a fun, sci-fi experience and it’s even narrated by Luke Skywalker himself, Mark Hamill.
Of course, every good onscreen sci-fi story needs a good score to set the tone, and “Dimension 404” has just that thanks to composer Cris Velasco.
“A good friend of mine, Alex Ferrari, has a company called Numb Robot that happened to be doing the color correction on this series. Alex is also a director, and I’ve scored three of his films. He mentioned my name to the producer of “D404″ and said they should look me up if they were still looking for a composer,” he told IndieWire of his initial involvement with the series.

Taking place at the Copro Gallery in Santa Monica on Saturday, August 6th from 8:00pm–11:30pm and running through August 27th, the “Wunderkammer” Clive Barker exhibit will feature eclectic artwork from one of the true Masters of Horror, presented by Velasco, who curated the collection.

Somehow over the years the Hollywood Music in Media Awards have escaped me. The event's fifth annual slate of nominees were announced today, and it's a pretty standard assortment of names we've been considering at the forefront of this year's Best Original Score Oscar race, from Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross to Hans Zimmer to the ubiquitous Alexandre Desplat. The nominees were chosen by an "Hmma advisory board and selection committee," and winners will be voted upon by "music-media industry professionals comprised of select members of the Society of Composers and Lyricists, The Television Academy, the AMPAS Music Branch, Naras, performing rights organizations, film music journalists and music executives," according to the press release. You might raise your eyebrow at something like "Interstellar" being on here when it hasn't been screened for these purposes (or much at all, for that matter). The nominations are also based on hearing music via...

BioWare and Electronic Arts have announced the final batches of downloadable content for “Mass Effect 3”: “Citadel” is a single-player campaign expansion, while “Reckoning” is a multiplayer pack containing new weapons, maps, and skins.
Like all multiplayer updates so far, “Reckoning” will be free, but “Citadel” will run to the tune of $14.99, or 1200 Microsoft Points on PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360. Neither the press release or official statements on the game’s forums mention the Wii U version of the game, which launched with some Dlc, but not “Leviathan” or “Omega.”
“Reckoning,” introduces new character classes to “Mass Effect 3”’s co-operative, Horde-like multiplayer section. In addition to the debut of the Krogan Warlord, Geth Juggernaut, Female Turian Raptor, Talon Mercenary, and Alliance Infiltration Unit, “Reckoning” features new weapons and equipment mods as well. The multiplayer pack will be available next week, on the 26th.

For a horror soundtrack junkie like myself, 2012 has been a pretty rewarding year for horror game music... in fact, some of the creepiest scores I've heard this year were written for games. It's also been a noteworthy year in horror gaming overall, including a fair amount of buzz about ZombiU, the first zombie survival horror game for Nintendo's Wii U and GamePad (check out our game review here). Accompanying this unique spin on zombie game tech is a wild, breathtaking score by acclaimed composer Cris Velasco, who recently added IGN's Best Overall Music nomination for Mass Effect 3 to his resume – which is itself quite packed with horror and dark fantasy titles, including Darksiders, Dark Messiah and Clive Barker's Jericho. I recently had a cool Q&A with Cris about his involvement in ZombiU... FEARnet: First of all, congrats on the nomination for Mass Effect 3. Cris: Thanks! Working on Mass...
