It took about ten minutes for me to realize that Pursuit was going to be an epic shitshow. That’s how long it takes to get to the first shootout. Between the overuse of slow motion, blood that looks like red paint and a pile of cash that explodes into the air for no apparent reason it’s more laughable than funny.

Horror has a long history of exploiting mental illness to create its monsters, but there are still relatively few films which place us inside the head of a person struggling with it, a person who desperately doesn’t want to become a danger to others. Christian Schultz and Thomas Johnston’s Presence is such a film, though it also has a number of other things going on, and some of these intersect awkwardly to dilute its overall effect.
We follow Jen (Jenna Lyng Adams), a woman whose struggle to manage her emotions is apparent at the outset, as is the difficulty she has had in maintaining a social life, probably as a result of people’s reactions to this. Two important figures in her life appear early on. There’s Sam (Alexandria DeBerry), who has apparently shown no interest in her for some time, but who turns up out of the blue to give her.

Directed by Christian Schultz from a screenplay co-written with Peter Ambrosio, Presence relocates the haunted house setting to a luxury yacht. The extreme isolation of being at sea provides fertile ground to explore what makes a haunting; is it a product of a fractured mind or something supernatural? Presence attempts to straddle the line between psychological and supernatural, but its vague approach to storytelling casts its horror adrift.
Jennifer (The Kominsky Method’s Jenna Lyng Adams) struggles to piece her life back together once leaving New York after a mental break. She’s plagued by horrific dreams in which she kills Keaton (Octavio Pisano), prone to panic attacks, and suffers further anxiety from being unable to reach her friend and business partner Sam (Alexandria DeBerry) for months. Then Sam reappears out of the blue with a lucrative business proposition from billionaire David (Dave Davis) that has the pair set off...

Within the hour, Jennifer is boarding a private plane and walking down the dock to a billionaire’s private yacht.
All seems well, except that Jennifer is plagued by violent, unsettling visions. Is her unchecked anxiety attempting to self-sabotage her once again... or has a sinister presence latched onto her?

"One bad dream can't ruin everything." Or maybe it can?? XYZ Films has revealed an official trailer for an indie horror thriller film titled Presence, marking the narrative feature debut of up-and-coming filmmaker Christian Schultz. This initially premiered at Panic Fest and will be out on VOD in November next month. Two young business partners are invited to a week-long private yachting voyage with a potential investor. At night, Jennifer's dreams begin to bleed into reality as the others realize that Jennifer may have unknowingly brought something sinister on-board. What dark secrets is she hiding from them? This stars Jenna Lyng Adams, Dave Davis, Alexandria DeBerry, Major Dodge, & Octavio Pisano. Unsurprisingly the film looks entirely unoriginal, with plenty of cliche tropes, topped off with a rich guy and a big yacht. Watch out. ›››

Check out another short film from Michigan native Luke Jaden (earlier this week, we featured "The Neverlands" starring Langston Fishburne, Son of Laurence Fishburne; and ‘Wolf Who Cried Boy’ starring Barkhad Abdi and Dwight Henry); this one is titled "King Ripple," and stars other names you'd be familiar with, like Keith Stanfield, as well as Torrey Wigfield, Allie DeBerry, newcomer Callaghan Belle, and Luke Jaden himself. The film is described as a "post-apocalyptic, tension-flaring, tale of trepidation," that "follows four teenagers as they travel into a desolate and decrepit urban wasteland brought forth by the very being...

I’m going to dub Rooster Teeth’s Lazer Team the Anti-Pixels. Their plots are so eerily similar, but I guess that can be said about most of these “unlikely hero” arcs in science fiction. A group of friends stumble upon alien weaponry, training montages ensue, there’s an inner struggle that keeps the team at odds, an alien challenger comes to Earth for a universal pink-slip competition, and the team finally comes together in a moment of emotional triumph. The only difference? Lazer Team doesn’t totally suck like Pixels. In fact, it’s rather funny – but what else would you expect from Rooster Teeth? You’ve been watching these guys make a mockery of Halo for years, now watch them take aim at the sci-fi genre like only their brash immaturity could imagine.
So who is the Lazer Team? Just your run-of-the-mill chuckleheads who have no business saving the world.

Uniting two of the biggest stars of their respective generations, 2 Guns will be heading into Us cinemas this weekend, promising an adrenaline-fuelled actioner for the multiplex.
We’ve only seen one full trailer so far, which was launched back in the spring, giving us a good idea of what to expect from the graphic novel adaptation. And with its Stateside release so close, a new red-band trailer has debuted over on IGN, giving us a new, unsuitable for work look at the action/comedy.
