Fresh off Billy Strings and Chris Thile’s first collaborative concert, the Grammy-winning bluegrass artists reconvened once again for a television audience as part of CBS Saturday Morning’s Saturday Sessions.
For the performance, the virtuosic guitar picker and the mandolin master delivered three traditional bluegrass classics: the oft-covered “I Am a Pilgrim,” “Wild Bill Jones,” and “I’ve Been All Around This World,” the latter popularized by the Grateful Dead.

Fences, the nom de guerre of the tattooed singer-guitarist Christopher Mansfield, teams up with Billy Strings on the bluegrass performer’s new collaboration “Globe.”
It’s a beautiful love ballad about our minute place in the grand scheme of the universe. On February 7th, Aubrie Sellers will unveil Far From Home, the follow-up to her 2016 debut album New City Blues, which was released four years ago this week. Sellers continues to cover a wide range of musical and emotional territory with the advance tracks from the forthcoming LP — the latest, “Lucky Charm,” finds the often-contemplative singer-songwriter in a sweet, light, and romantic mood.
Buzzing with swirling rock guitar and pounding rhythm, “Lucky Charm” turns negatives into positives as Sellers finds herself relentlessly followed by a sure sign of bad luck — a black cat.

David Olney was a unique breed of songwriter, one who rarely revealed himself directly through his songs. Instead, the intimate details that emerged in his remarkable works focused on the emotional being of characters he himself seemed to be learning about as the stories unfolded. Yet because he knew their lives, their motivations, and their failings so instinctively, the details painted with his words were often startling. Olney, who died Saturday at age 71 from an apparent heart attack during a performance at the 30A Songwriters Festival in Santa Rosa Beach,...

David Olney, the Americana singer and songwriter whose poetic often intricate writing style made an impact on Steve Earle, Townes Van Zandt, and Emmylou Harris, died Saturday from an apparent heart attack following a performance at the 30A Songwriters Festival in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida. He was 71. Olney’s publicist confirmed his death.
Born in Rhode Island in 1948, Olney did a stint at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill studying English literature before shuffling through Georgia, where he had an epiphany at a Townes Van Zandt concert. He...

David Olney, an Americana singer-songwriter whose works were covered or cowritten by Emmylou Harris, Steve Earle, Linda Rondstadt, Steve Young, Del McCoury and Laurie Lewis, has died. Olney passed on Saturday night while performing onstage at the 30A Songwriter Festival. He was 71.
The singer/Songwriter Townes Van Zandt once said of Olney”Anytime anyone asks me who my favorite music writers are, I say Mozart, Lightnin’ Hopkins, Bob Dylan, and Dave Olney. Dave Olney is one of the best songwriters I’ve ever heard – and that’s true. I mean that from my heart.”
Musician/author Amy Rigby was performing with Olney at the event and posted about it on Facebook.
“David Olney, a beautiful man, a legend, a songwriting poet died last night,” Rigby said. “I was sitting next to him in the round, had been so honored and looking forward to getting to trade songs with him and Scott Miller.

On November 28th, 1925, 94 years ago this week, the Wsm Barn Dance was born. Fashioned after the already popular National Barn Dance, which premiered in April 1924 on Chicago radio station Wls, the show would later be christened the Grand Ole Opry, after host George D. Hay noted that a slate of performers playing hillbilly music, fiddle tunes, and the like would follow a just-completed classical music program. On a Saturday night in 1927, just before harmonica whiz DeFord Bailey played “Pan American Blues,” Hay told the radio audience, “For the next three hours,...

Aubrie Sellers has released the pensive title track to her upcoming album Far From Home. Expressing a sense of disconnection, but ultimately finding a light at the end of a dark tunnel, the tender tune, co-written with Park Chisholm, stands in stark contrast to the hard-rocking previously released cuts from Sellers’ second album.
“This song came from the feeling of being disconnected from others, or never quite fitting in,” Sellers says in a statement. “Feeling like I’m not in the right place is something that seems to follow me around.

Over his 70-plus years in the spotlight, singer and guitarist Mac Wiseman helped build bluegrass and modern country music from the ground up. He remained a valuable mentor and ambassador for both genres until his death on February 24th. He was 93.

Select box set reviews from The Associated Press:
Johnny Cash, "The Complete Columbia Album Collection" (Columbia/Legacy)
If you're under 40, you likely see Johnny Cash two ways – as the nearly mythological Sun Records proto-rocker and as the wizened old man staring down God in his American Recordings period in the years before his 2003 death.
Between those two important periods lay decades of songs, personalities and re-inventions many folks aren't familiar with. The massive new box set, "The Complete Columbia Album Collection," will help fill in those gaps for anyone interested in Cash beyond the name-checking cachet he brings to your iPod.
A staggering amount of music is gathered here in 63 discs representing a quarter century of output from an American popular culture icon whose career was far more Technicolor than his Man in Black nickname suggests. And the average music fan yet to turn grey has no idea what that...

Part of growing up is being able to admit you've made a mistake and I did indeed make a mistake with yesterday's late night listings. That's what happens when you try to write at 4am on two hours of sleep, apparently, and I apologize profusely for the error. It may not be the last one this week, as I will be trading in the schedule of a meth addict for working with middle schoolers all day for several days in a row. Basically, if I can make it to the coming weekend without my brain leaking out of my skull and forming a pile of screaming grey goo on the floor I've won. But that doesn't matter, because the Pajiba 10 came out today so all of you are going to be either drooling over that or explaining to people why they're wrong about their celebrity crushes in the comment section.
