We live in a world beset by major problems: the coronavirus pandemic, systemic racism and, as if those weren’t troubling enough, the threat of climate change. But Emmy-winning producer, director and author Ann Druyan maintains optimism about human potential. You might say she takes a cosmic view.
“What gives me hope is that our ancestors had their backs to the wall on countless occasions…and they suffered tremendous hardships and managed to endure and even to flourish,” Druyan tells Deadline. “This is true of our species…We have what it takes.”
She adds quickly that what she believes in is “evidence-based hope.”
“We have the means to get through these terrible troubles, but we have to get our act together,” Druyan insists. “And one of the ways, in my view, is to spread the knowledge of science and high technology to the widest possible public once again.”

The Writers Guild of America announced the TV nominees for the 2015 WGA Awards on Thursday (December 4) morning and several new shows broke into the fields in a big way. And, of course, there were a number of big WGA Award nomination head-scratchers. Specifically, where the heck was FX's "Fargo"? The answer is below. Making perhaps the biggest splash was "Transparent," which earned three nominations and, since "Orange Is The New Black" earned two nods and "House of Cards" pick up one, that meant that Amazon Prime and Netflix are, at least for one award-giving organization, on equal footing as creators of original programming. The Jill Soloway-created "Transparent" is nominated for New Series, where it will go against "The Affair," "The Knick," "Silicon Valley" and "True Detective." "Transparent" and "Silicon Valley" are also up for Comedy Series, going against "Louie," "Veep" and "Orange Is The New Black." Lest you panic...

Sundance just ended, and we are already preparing for the next big film festival, South By Southwest. Not too long ago, the festival announced a few of the films premiering this year, but now they’ve announced the main slate. The midnight selections and some inevitable late-breaking additions are still to be announced, but this should be more than enough to get you excited. Along with many World Premieres, and Sundance favorites like Richard Linklater’s Boyhood and Gareth Evans’ The Raid 2, the line up also includes an anniversary screening of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, and an extended Q&A screening of The Grand Budapest Hotel with Wes Anderson. SXSW 2014 runs March 7 through 15 in Austin, Texas. Check out the line up after the jump.

David Gordon Green’s acclaimed Joe will make its Us premiere, having bowed at Venice and then Toronto last year. Early reviews have Nicolas Cage giving one of the finest performances of his career, with Tye Sheridan (Mud) excellent alongside him.

Not sure if there is a Short Term 12 equivalent in this year’s Narrative Feature Comp, but on paper SXSW programmers are serving up a mean (and the usual lean group of 8 out of a whopping 1,324 film entries) for the upcoming competitiuon of eight which includes notable entries (that we’ve been tracking for a good time now) such as Zachary Wigon’s The Heart Machine, John Magary’s The Mend, Leah Meyerhoff’s I Believe in Unicorns and Lawrence Michael Levine’s Wild Canaries. Undoubtedly one of the most anticipated docs of the year, on the non-fiction side we find Margaret Brown’s The Great Invisible. Below you’ll find a breakdown of the other sections (notable world preems in We’ll Never Have Paris and Faults (see Mary Elizabeth Winstead above), some Sundance items with Texan connections and other nuggets.

Long before the likes of Brian Cox picked up the baton, astronomer, astrophysicist, cosmologist and author Carl Sagan did more than anyone to popularise and communicate science to the public. His 13-part series Cosmos: A Personal Voyage - created with Ann Druyan and Steven Soter - changed the way science was shown on TV forever. To mark the 15th anniversary of his sad passing in 1996 at the age of 62, we can't think of any better tribute than to feature this wonderful music video from John Boswell's Symphony of Science project. Exclusive: Director-producer David Semel has joined Fox’s 13-part docu-series Cosmos: A Space-Time Odyssey, which is executive produced by Seth MacFarlane. Additionally, I hear the project, a sequel to Carl Sagan’s groundbreaking 1980 series, will also get a film treatment with an IMAX release. He also is expected to serve as an executive producer alongside MacFarlane, Sagan’s widow Ann Druyan and Mitchell Cannold, president of the Ithaca, NY-based Cosmos Studio, which will produce the series for Fox, with a second window on National Geographic. MacFarlane conceived the Cosmos redo with Sagan’s original collaborators – writer/producer Druyan and astrophysicist Steven Soter, with renowned astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson stepping in for Sagan as new host. In billions and billions of years, we never would have expected to be writing the following sentence: Fox is developing an update to astronomer Carl Sagan's landmark series "Cosmos" -- and Seth MacFarlane is producing it.
But it's true. The network on Friday (Aug. 5) announced plans to air a 13-part docu-series called "Cosmos: A Space-Time Odyssey" in 2013. Astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson will host, and the creator of "Family Guy" will executive produce it with Sagan's partners on the 1980 PBS show, Steven Soter and Ann Druyan (who is also Sagan's widow).
"Never more than at this moment in the modern era have we needed a profound reminder of the colossally important and exciting role that science, space exploration and the human quest for knowledge must continue to play in our development as a species," MacFarlane says. "We should be vigorously exploring the solar system by now, and who better to...

Fox has given a green light to Seth McFarlane's Cosmos: A Space-Time Odyssey. THR reports that "the 13-part docu-series is designed to be a successor to Carl Sagan's iconic 1980s PBS series, with MacFarlane teaming up with Sagan's widow, writer-producer Ann Druyanand astrophysicist Steven Soter."
This is definitely a change of pace for MacFarlane, best known for the Family Guy. Astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson is set to host the series, which is slated to air in primetime 2013, first on Fox and then later in the night on the National Geographic Channel (who will co-produce the series).

In the vast expanse of the TV universe, there would seem to be billions and billions of popular series from the past more appropriate for "Family Guy" creator Seth MacFarlane to take on than Carl Sagan's landmark scientific program "Cosmos: A Personal Voyage." In fact, MacFarlane has already found what feels like a nice fit with the upcoming "Flintstones" reboot he's putting together for Fox. But Fox announced Friday that MacFarlane has teamed up with Sagan's closest collaborators -- his widow, Anne Druyan, and astrophysicist Steven Soter -- to produce "Cosmos:...

Seth MacFarlane -- yes, that Seth MacFarlane -- is revisiting Carl Sagan's 'Cosmos.' MacFarlane is teaming with original Sagan collaborators Ann Druyan and Steven Soter to produce 'Cosmos: A Space-Time Odyssey,' a 13-part docu-series.
The series will be hosted by astrophysicist Neil de Grasse Tyson and debuts on Fox in 2013. There will be same-night encores on the National Geographic Channel.
"Never more than at this moment in the modern era have we needed a profound reminder of the colossally important and exciting role that science, space exploration and the human quest for knowledge must continue to play in our development as a species," MacFarlane said in a statement. "We should be vigorously exploring the solar system by now, and who better to inspire us to get there than Ann Druyan, Steven Soter, Neil deGrasse Tyson and, of course, Carl Sagan."

I gotta admit, I didn't see this one coming.
Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane will be a producer in a new Cosmos television series. Yes, that Cosmos, the one that famously featured astronomer Carl Sagan talking about the origins of the universe and humanity's quest to understand its place in the universe.
Like I said, nada viewing approaching.
Lest you have images of MacFarlane doing a Peter Griffin impression on the bridge of Sagan's dandelion wisp of a cosmic spaceship, this is going to be a serious, documentary approach science series. Instead of airing on PBS, the home of Sagan's original Cosmos, this new Cosmos series will air primetime on Fox. Yeah, as if this idea wasn't strange enough from the norm already, a hard science doc series will air on the Fox channel.
There are more points in favor of MacFarlane's Cosmos series being a worthy heir to Sagan's show.

After recently signing on to reboot one classic TV show, Hanna-Barbera's The Flintstones, Seth MacFarlane is taking on another iconic TV series, Carl Sagan's Cosmos: A Personal Voyage. Fox has greenlighted Cosmos: A Space-Time Odyssey, a 13-part docu-series from Family Guy creator MacFarlane and late Sagan's original collaborators – his widow, writer/producer Ann Druyan and astrophysicist Steven Soter. Envisioned as a successor to the Emmy and Peabody Award-winning original 13-part program, which was hosted by Sagan, the new Cosmos series will be hosted by renowned astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson. Underscoring MacFarlane's commercial appeal, Cosmos will air on Fox in primetime, something pretty unprecedented these days for a science documentary series on commercial American television. (The original series aired on PBS.) Fox will air Cosmos: A Personal Voyage in 2013, which is also when the network will launch MacFarlane's Flintstones reboot. National Geographic Channel, which will co-produce Cosmos,...
