DC Comics "Detective Comics" #1062, available July 26, 2022, is written by Ram V., Simon Spurrier, illustrated by Rafael Albuquerque and Dani, with covers by Evan Cagle, Lee Bermejo, J.H. Williams and InHyuk Lee:
"...something is terribly wrong with 'Batman'. No matter the tests 'Bruce' takes, nor the numbers he counts, the greatest detective in the world can't pin down the source of this creeping dread -- of his own inner demons and a looming mortality.
"Meanwhile, real demons roam the shadows as an ancient melody haunts the 'Gotham' night. Here now the curtains rise and as the eerie tune streams in...who is human, who is demon, who is to tell?
"As Batman investigates the songs and the demons of Gotham, he is forced to confront the oldest question...whether there has been a demon within him all along...and if so, what does it want?..."

You probably know Simon Spurrier and Aaron Campbell from their time together on DC’s John Constantine: Hellblazer series. The pair teamed up to create the best John Constantine stories in years, putting out 12 issues that gave the character back his edge and landed on countless best of the year lists by some of the finest tastemakers in comics journalism. Their working relationship on the book was fantastic, wedding the realistic and the magical beautifully.
“We learned that the two of us can get real weird if we want,” Campbell tells us. So of course they’d keep the band together for some more weirdness: this time with the Suicide Squad.
Suicide Squad: Blaze is a new comic from DC’s mature audiences, prestige format Black Label line coming in February from Campbell and Spurrier, and it promises to be every bit as weird as Hellblazer was. But instead of...

Warning: contains spoilers for the Labyrinth: Coronation Comics.
Maybe yours is the kind of mind that’s never worried about why in the 1986 film Labyrinth, Goblin King Jareth – ostensibly a human man, albeit one who can turn into an owl – rules a species with which he shares zero physical characteristics. If so, then go in peace, friend, and enjoy life. You likely already are. If, however, yours is the sort of mind that regularly lets you leave home in slippers because it’s busy wondering how they get the horses to the Olympics, then step this way. The Labyrinth mystery has been answered!
In March 2018, Boom! Studios published the first of Simon Spurrier and Daniel Bayliss’ delightful 12-part Jim Henson’s Labyrinth: Coronation series. The solicitation trailed the books as the untold history of the Goblin King, offering “a striking look into the history of the Labyrinth itself, and what...

Will that be Dane’s fate? Following his epic battle against the King In Black, a reinvigorated Dane has a greater sense of purpose than ever before. But his sword is the key to a new enemy’s evil plan and only the Black Knight can prevent the coming death and destruction.

GLAAD held their very first virtual edition of its GLAAD Media Awards and it was just as spirited and entertaining as if we were in person kiki’ing and honoring media for fair, accurate, and inclusive representations of LGBTQ people and issues. If you weren’t able to watch the virtual ceremony the 31st Annual GLAAD Media Awards will air on Logo on August 3.
Hosted by poolside and outdoors by comedians Fortune Feimster and Gina Yashere, the virtual ceremony featured performances by Tony Award-winner and The Politician star Ben Platt as well as singer and activist Shea Diamond. The talented Chloe x Halle closed the show with a performance of “Do It” featuring RuPaul’s Drag Race alums Vanessa Vanjie Mateo, Mayhem Miller and Naomi Smalls.

It’s no surprise that politics took center stage at this year’s GLAAD Media Awards.
While Rachel Maddow accepted her award for outstanding TV journalism segment for her interview with Pete Buttigeig on “The Rachel Maddow Show,“ she said, “We are at a point where an openly gay TV host can accept an award for an interview with an openly gay major presidential candidate. Progress in this country is very rarely linear, and it barely happens on its own. If you are at all inspired by the progress you see, please vote, organize, run for office, and if you’re enraged by the regression that you see, please vote, organize and run for office.”
Since 1990, GLAAD Media Awards has celebrated the visibility of LGBTQ experiences in media and honored accurate and inclusive representations of queer people or color. In lieu of its usual glamorous setup in New York City,...

More than six weeks after comics ceased shipping because of Covid-19 disruptions to production and distribution, Diamond Distributors, the former monopoly that once distributed all single issues to shops around the country, has announced that they’re back. May 20th sees the return of new single issue comics from Image, Boom!, Marvel, Dark Horse and others to comic shops.
From the looks of the shipping list, the first few weeks will be releasing at about half speed, with smaller-than-usual releases from all companies. But May 20th will be the first semi-normal New Comic Book Day in almost two months, with some high profile releases – the first issue of The Ludocrats, the long-awaited raunchy space fantasy from Kieron Gillen and The Spire’s Jeff Stokely from Image Comics; the last issue of DCeased: Unkillables; and the zero issue of Marvel’s big spring (now summer) Skrull/Kree/Krakoa crossover Empyre among others.

In this preview of John Constantine, Hellblazer #3, the legendary dirtbag magician ducks fire and lyrics in England.
There's something weirdly soothing about the particular way Simon Spurrier and Aaron Campbell show what a scumbag John Constantine is. Not that he hasn't been a sleazeball in the past - it's part of his core appeal. He's a jackass con man who will sell out the people he loves at the drop of a hat, but usually because he believes he's got an elaborate multilevel screwjob planned that he thinks will leave him even with his friends and get him what he needs from the bad guy.
But there's something about how Spurrier writes him that feels...extra right. We're documented Spurrier fans. When he's on, he's amazing. But he can occasionally veer into..."wordy." It's almost always dialogue when it happens, so it's better than a wall of narration boxes.

Comics gave us everything we needed in 2019. The best ones surprised even us.
e stand at the end of a decade of massive change, and the comics industry is not immune to those shifts. There are more ways to read more comics about more things than ever before. That’s why the best comics of 2019 contains not one, but three Superman books.
I’m joking. There are only two textual Superman books, but they’re both wildly different, and they and the rest of the best comics of 2019 are a vastly different set than we would have seen even five years ago. There were some really great comics published this year, so even going to 20 won’t catch all of them. And, of course, I’m not independently wealthy or able to manipulate time, so I absolutely missed some great ones that you should feel comfortable yelling...

John Constantine returns in the appropriately titled Sandman Universe: Hellblazer. Si Spurrier tells us all about it.
John Constantine is on his way back to the Sandman Universe. Simon Spurrier will be writing a John Constantine book for DC’s Black Label imprint with art by Marcio Takara called The Sandman Universe Presents: Hellblazer, which arrives on Oct. 30. Neil Gaiman kicked off his curated Sandman Universe label last year, and since then The Dreaming, Books of Magic, House of Whispers, and Lucifer have been continuing the tradition that Gaiman and his bevvy of dream-come-true-artists started decades ago in the pages of Vertigo's Sandman. And now everyone's favorite con man, chain smoking wizard is going back to the dark realms of a DC mature label imprint. Writer Si Spurrier told us about what dark dreams await John Constantine...

Fans of DC Comics and Sandman can sleep easy because the realm of the Dreaming is in good hands.
At the DC House of Horror panel at New York Comic Con, it was announced that the new creative team of Sandman Presents: The Dreaming will be none other than G. Willow Wilson and artist Nick Robles. Sandman Presents: The Dreaming launched a year ago with writer Simon Spurrier and artists Bilquis Evely, Matt Lopes, and Simon Bowland. But with Spurrier departing The Dreaming to write Sandman Presents: Hellblazer, Wilson and Robles will soon take up residence as proprietors of Dream’s realm.
Wilson told an appropriately surreal story on how she found out that Neil Gaiman and DC were handing her the keys of the Dreaming.
"I was on book tour for The Bird King," Wilson told the Nycc crowd. “Chris Conroy called me to put in contact with Neil Gaiman.

John Constantine is doing what he does best in this preview: screwing his friends over.
Wave two of the Sandman Universe is coming at the end of October, and DC Comics released an advance preview of the one shot that kicks it all off - The Sandman Universe Presents Hellblazer #1. In it, we see John Constantine doing what he was born to do: betraying friends, scheming, and maybe, in a flash of self-sacrifice, saving the universe.
Wave one of the Sandman Universe books has been an unquestioned success: The Dreaming, Simon Spurrier and Bilquis Evely's book about the realm of the Endless abandoned by Dream and taken over by, effectively, a computer virus, was on our Best Comics of 2018 list, and DC is looking to build off of that success. DC confirms that the Hellblazer will return to his roots in a new John Constantine series.
Vertigo might be gone, but the Sandman Universe is still going strong at DC with a new series and second year renewals for all four of its launch books.
The Sandman Universe Presents Hellblazer is a one-shot reintroducing the self-absorbed asshole street magician who's secretly one of the most powerful sorcerers in the universe to the world of comics that birthed him. Constantine's first appearance was in the pages of Alan Moore and Rick Veitch's Swamp Thing, but he quickly migrated to Vertigo, and his family played an integral part in Neil Gaiman and company's original run of Sandman comics. This late October one-shot will be written by The Dreaming's Simon Spurrier, with art from Green Arrow's Marcio Takara, and followed by a John Constantine, Hellblazer ongoing series from...

Ah, Vertigo, the house that Neil built. Gaiman that is. Without Neil Gaiman there would probably be no Vertigo, or at least not the successful imprint it became. Being fair, it’s also right to say without Editor Karen Berger there would definitely be no Vertigo as not only did she recruit Neil Gaiman to work at DC, she also brought in Grant Morrison, Jamie Delano and Peter Milligan among others and brought a new sensibility to DC. If there’s one thing Americans like, its British cynicism. As a side note, Neil Gaiman wrote one of my favourite books ever, Death: The High Cost of Living, which as a dedicated superhero fan is saying something. Death, of course, was one of The Endless, and The Endless featured prominently in The Sandman and,...

A rift between worlds has opened, revealing a space beyond the Dreaming. Meanwhile, a book from Lucien’s library is discovered by a group of children in the waking world where it should not exist.

As a fellow fan of the Suicide Squad, I hope many of you will agree with me in saying that 2018 is thus far looking pretty good for our favorite group of misfits. I mean, not only do we have the Hell to Pay animated movie to look forward to this spring, but cameras are expected to begin rolling later this year on Task Force X’s next big screen outing.
Still, all that awesomeness is a bit further on the horizon. But fortunately, we have something else to take in as soon as next week, because the next issue of the ongoing comic book series is set to continue with the latest chapter in the currently unfolding arc.
What’s kind of funny about this Juan character (seen in the gallery) is that he pretty much doesn’t belong here, but he’s caught up in this extreme situation which...

Judge Dredd: Trifecta
Script Droids: Al Ewing, Simon Spurrier, Rob Williams
Art Droids: Henry Flint, Simon Coleby, D’Isreali, Carl Critchlow
Editor: Matt Smith
Publisher: Rebellion Developments/2000Ad
One of the reasons comic books are so popular today, is because of the way writers and artists manage to manipulate the medium to work against its constraints. While many creators settle for basic A to B plot progression, many others, such a Jeff Lemire, Matt Kindt, and Greg Capullo make the pages work for them. Yet when 2000Ad released its weekly progs last year (or ‘issues’ to us North Amerikers), something very interesting started happening.
Judge Dredd: Trifecta was initially released as individual stories, all seemingly unrelated, following three of...
