Sad tear-jerker movies are something we all need in the moments of sorrow and pain to release all our negative emotions crying alongside the characters. They get even more tearful when complicated or even impossible romantic relationships are featured, like in Ryan Gosling’s The Notebook (2004) and Anne Hathaway’s One Day (2011).
These films obviously inspired last year’s drama that takes romantic struggle to a whole other level. It focuses on the relationship of the two childhood friends, Nora and Hae Sung, who get separated by Nora’s emigration from South Korea.
A decade later, they try to reconcile via Skype calls, however, this attempt fails due to the personalities’ differences that developed during that time. Another decade later, they contact one more time, and this time Hae Sung intends to visit Nora in New York.
You can already guess how many essential issues this movie raises: the themes of emigration,...

You may not know Justin Kuritzkes by name, but there's a strong chance you've seen his face before. The playwright turned screenwriter behind director Luca Guadagnino's steamy tennis drama "Challengers" rocketed to internet fame thanks to his viral 2011 YouTube fantasy skit "Potion Seller." That he went from speaking to himself in silly voices while distorting his face on his computer to penning scripts for the filmmaker behind "Call Me By Your Name" is truly the type of career trajectory the rest of us can only dream about.
In another twist that might not pass the smell test if you tried to turn his story into a film, Kuritzkes is married to Celine Song, the writer and director behind only one of the best movies of 2023, "Past Lives." Even setting that aside, it's easy to spot the parallels between Song's hit and "Challengers." Both films follow the same set of...

2024 Oscar Snubs: Killers of the Flower Moon & Maestro ( Photo Credit – IMDb )
The 2024 Oscar saw Oppenheimer bag seven awards, including Best Director, Best Actor and Best Picture. Poor Things won four awards at the Academy this year. However, there were some big 2023 movies that either won just one or not even a single award. Like every year, we witnessed again how some movies, directors or actors’ work got completely unrecognised.
From Robert De Niro’s Killers of the Flower Moon to Bradley Cooper’s Maestro, many famous films were brutally ignored at the 2024 Oscar ceremony. We have listed several such movies that were nominated in different categories, but got snubbed by the Academy.
Major 2024 Oscar Snubs – Killers of The Flower Moon
The Martin Scorsese directorial received ten Oscar nominations this year – from Best Director to Best Supporting Actor (Robert De Niro). To everyone’s surprise, the film didn’t win a single award.

Oscar week is finally here! Ask anyone who has been in the thick of awards season and they’ll likely let out a huge sigh followed by exasperated admission that this has been one of the most hectic runs in recent memory. The condensed calendar, forced by last year’s dual strikes, could translate to more lively bashes, however, as there’s light at the end of the tunnel with Sunday’s Oscars. That can only mean that champagne is currently popping at A-list bashes across Los Angeles, and The Hollywood Reporter is on the scene everywhere from Vanity Fair and Elton John to MPTF’s Night Before. See below for the roundup of all the red carpet action.

As inevitable as “Everything Everywhere All at Once” (A24) felt last year on its way to collecting seven Oscars including Best Picture, this year’s frontrunner, Christopher Nolan’s historic epic “Oppenheimer” (Universal) also feels undeniable for at minimum seven Oscars including Best Picture and Director. With 13 Oscar nominations, the film has swept all the precursor awards, so its final Oscar take could be more than the seven it won at the BAFTAs. But it won’t win everything.
With “Oppenheimer,” Nolan delivered a serious but entertaining portrait of a man (Cillian Murphy as the theoretical physicist) who must confront how he changed the world — and not for the better. The compelling narrative delivered almost $1 billion at the global box office. Nolan challenged his crew to create everything possible in front of the cameras and avoid digital VFX. Past Lives Photo: Courtesy of San Sebastian Film Festival Celine Song's Past Lives was the big winner at this year's Independent Spirit Awards. Her moving indie drama, which checks in with a South Korean emigre (Greta Lee) to North America at 12-yearly intervals and charts her reconnection with her first love (Teo Yoo), took home the prizes for Best Film and Best Director.
Jeffrey Wright won Best Lead Performance for his satire for his performance as a jaded English professor in Cord Jefferson's satire American Fiction, which also saw Jefferson pick up the Best Screenplay award, while Da’Vine Joy Randolph won the Best Supporting Performance gong for her role as a grieving school cook in Alexander Payne's comedy drama The Holdovers. Jeffrey Wright took home the award for best lead performance at the 2024 Film Independent Spirit Awards for his role in American Fiction.
When Wright made his way to the stage to accept the award from presenter Colman Domingo, he expressed how thrilled he was to receive the honor from the actor. “Wow, thank you, thank you. And to receive this from you, Colman, man…it’s just a beautiful gift,” he gushed.
The American Fiction star had one of the most candid, heartfelt speeches of the night.
“It’s funny, you go to these awards shows, [and] you kind of grow tired of them and then you get one and uh…kind of changes the vibe,” he joked, met with raucous laughter.
He recalled attending the Independent Spirit Awards back in 1997, when he was up for best debut performance for his starring role in Basquiat. “The first time I was here at the Independent Spirit Awards,...

Past Lives won the award for best feature at the 2024 Film Independent Spirit Awards on Sunday.
After being presented the honor by Jude Law at the end of the ceremony in Santa Monica, director Celine Song took to the stage with the film’s team to share some heartfelt words.
“I’ve been tasked with the amazing opportunity to speak on behalf of these amazing, incredible filmmakers up here,” Song said. “I feel so honored to be here to talk about this movie that we got to share with you.”
The filmmaker — who also won the award for best director Sunday — went on to speak about a deeper theme that was also present in the film, and what it meant to her.

Another big award show took place this weekend (in addition to the SAG Awards), the Film Independent Spirit Awards, which celebrates indie film and TV. One thing about this awards show is that their idea of independent sometimes makes me scratch my head a bit, with HBO’s big-budget The Last of Us nominated a whole bunch in the TV category, along with Netflix’s Beef and several other streaming shows, which I’m not sure one could call independent. For films, there’s a $30 million budget cap. For TV, I’m honestly not sure what the benchmark is because Last of Us was notoriously an expensive show to shoot, costing at least $100 million.
Indeed, The Last of Us won some key awards on the TV side, winning Best Supporting Performance (for Nick Offerman) and Best Breakthrough Performance (for Keivonn Montreal Woodard). Over on the film side, American Fiction and...

Martin Scorsese and Christopher Nolan, with their unique way of filmmaking, established their names in every movie buff’s heart. Their recent films Killers of the Flower Moon and Oppenheimer earned 10 and 13 Oscar nominations respectively and a clear frontrunners to win some. While Martin Scorsese is known for his distinctive visual style and his exploration of themes such as crime, violence, and the human condition, Christopher Nolan is famous for employing non-linear storytelling, cinematography, and scientific subject matter.

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts Awards (BAFTAs) are often quite predictive of the Oscars, as there’s some overlap between BAFTA voters and the Academy. And like last year, the BAFTA winners (along with next Saturday’s SAG Awards) could impact Oscar voting, which commences February 22 and ends February 27, 2024 before the 96th Oscars telecast on Sunday, March 10 on ABC. (See all the winners here.)
While most Academy voters don’t watch the BAFTAs on Britbox, they see who wins, and winning momentum always matters. Last year, “All Quiet on the Western Front” won the Best Film BAFTA as well as Best Director for Edward Berger, who did not repeat at the Oscars, winning a total of four including Best International Feature Film and three craft awards. Eventual Best Picture Oscar winner “Everything Everywhere All at Once” took home just one BAFTA out of ten nominations, for editing,...

Cillian Murphy shouted out his “Oppenhomies” while accepting his leading actor BAFTA award.
After thanking the film’s director Christopher Nolan, producer Emma Thomas and Universal Pictures chief Donna Langley, Murphy said: “I want to thank my fellow nominees and my Oppenhomies and, in fact, all of you in the room. I know it’s a cliché to say I’m in awe of you, but I genuinely am in awe.”
Murphy played J. Robert Oppenheimer in Nolan’s biographical drama, which took home seven awards throughout the night, including best director for Nolan and best film. The film, which scored 13 nominations in total, chronicles the life and career of Oppenheimer as he develops the atomic bomb during World War II.

The BAFTAs red carpet is well underway here in London, the UK, and the rain, this year, has thankfully stayed away. Taking place at the Royal Festival Hall on Waterloo’s Southbank, film fans have gathered at the erected fences surrounding red carpets, with excited teens clamoring for sights of Zendaya and Margot Robbie.
A few yards on the other side of the fence, movie stars sashayed their way into interviews, with the radiant Da’Vine Joy Randolph, who is nominated for Best Supporting Actress for “The Holdovers,” speaking to red carpet host Alex Zane. Randolph, who is at her first ever BAFTAs, said: “Everything is so lovely and excited. There’s a buzz. It’s wonderful, it’s so great to be here.”
She continued: “It’s a different experience when it’s not just your category. It’s special. We can enjoy the whole process together. We had amazing chemistry,...

BAFTA is an independent arts charity that comprises thousands of industry insiders, much like the American motion picture academy. The BAFTAs could well give us a preview of what the Oscars might do in three weeks time on March 10. And with voting for the Oscars kicking off on February 22, this precursor could have an outsized influence.
Until 2013, the entire BAFTA membership decided the nominees in a complicated two-part process that involved a lot of longlists with the general membership deciding the semi-finalists and the branches making the final determination of the nominees. This was replaced in 2013 by a system more akin to the Oscars where nominations were determined by each branch (except for Best Picture). Two years ago,...

“Oppenheimer” swept the BAFTAs on Sunday night, winning awards for director Christopher Nolan and actor Cillian Murphy as well as taking home the prize for best film.
Overall, the movie took home seven golden BAFTA masks, with “Poor Things” coming in second place with five wins.
BAFTA chair Sarah Putt opened the ceremony at the Royal Festival Hall in London on Sunday night by welcoming the star-studded audience, which included Prince William, who arrived solo as his wife, Catherine, Princess of Wales, continues to recuperate at home following an operation. William, who is president of BAFTA, did not give a speech, no doubt in part because of renewed interest in his personal life following his father King Charles III’s cancer diagnosis last month.
In her speech, Putt said she was sending Catherine and the King “our very best wishes” before handing over to the night’s host, “Doctor Who” star David Tennant.

“Anatomy of a Fall” is the favorite to win Best Original Screenplay at the Oscars; director Justine Triet co-wrote the script with partner Arthur Harari. But another multi-hyphenate could pull off an upset: “Past Lives” writer/director Celine Song. Her acclaimed film follows two childhood friends from South Korea who reconnect in the USA years later and find that their bond is still there. Greta Lee and BAFTA-nominated Teo Yoo bring Song’s delicately crafted characters to life while the restrained story is a clear sign of Song’s maturity and control as a writer.
Her film has done very well with critics groups. She won Best Original Screenplay from the Austin Film Critics Association Awards, the Florida Film Critics Circle Awards, and the Washington D.C. Area Film Critics Association Awards. She was also nominated at the Critics Choice Awards for Best Original Screenplay. She lost that race to...

On her first feature film try, Celine Song struck gold with the time-hopping romantic drama Past Lives.
A24’s semi-autobiographic pic netted two key nominations at this year’s Oscars, for Best Picture and Song’s Original Screenplay — a huge coup for the tiny feature that debuted at last year’s Sundance Film Festival.
The Oscar noms came off five nominations at the Golden Globes and a Best Feature win at the Gothams. The pic, which Song wrote and directed, tells the story of Nora (Greta Lee) and Hae Sung (Teo Yoo), deeply connected childhood friends who lose contact after Nora’s family emigrates from South Korea. If you missed Celine Song’s thoroughly wonderful Past Lives in cinemas last year, it’s now streaming on Netflix.
2023 was a year of cinematic highs and lows. One of the biggest highs however, was Celine Song’s Past Lives, which is now on Netflix.
The film follows Greta Lee’s Nora, a Korean immigrant who moves from Seoul to Canada to New York, finds love and marries but her comfortable domestic life is interrupted by her connection to her childhood best friend, Hae Sung (Teo Yoo). We wouldn’t dare to spoil more of the film’s narrative, but you might need some tissues for this one.
At the heart of the film is the concept of in-yeon, the titular past lives, a Korean concept that determines that in order for a couple to end up together, they must have met millions of times in past lives. It’s an achingly romantic concept,...

“It’s my first and it’s really lovely,” reflects producer David Hinojosa on receiving the first Oscar nomination of his career for “Past Lives,” which is one of the 10 films nominated for Best Picture. He was on a film set in New York on the morning of the nominations and requested a free trailer to watch the announcement live. The producer shares the recognition with Christine Vachon and Pamela Koffler, who he says “essentially taught me how to produce movies.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.
Hinojosa had read some of writer-director Celine Song’s stage plays prior to meeting her in 2021 and even had tickets to see one of her dramas live before it was canceled due to the start of covid in early 2020. The producer praises her screenplay, for which she also earned her first Oscar nomination, stating, “I don’t say this to be hyperbolic, it really is a perfect screenplay,...

If you're looking for a film to watch at home for Valentine's, hang on a day late and catch Celine Song's wonderful debut. Featuring a perfect trio of performances, this is not about the love of simple once-a-year gesture but that which goes the distance. When Nora - then named Na Young - leaves South Korea as a 12-year-old for Canada, she also leaves behind her first crush. Fast-forwarding 12 years, Nora (Greta Lee) is now living in New York and finds a bit of Facebook curiosity leads her to reconnect with Hae Sung (Teo Yoo). This is just the start of Song's elegant drama, which will check in once again with the pair after another dozen years have passed and Nora is now married to Jewish American Arthur. Rather...

“Oppenheimer” star Cillian Murphy was once in a two-way battle with “Killers of the Flower Moon” actor Leonardo DiCaprio for the top spot in our Oscars odds chart for Best Actor this year. DiCaprio was snubbed, however, while “The Holdovers” leading man Paul Giamatti has snuck up the leaderboard. We now have another two-race horse between Murphy and Giamatti.
The Irish actor has so far only triumphed at the Golden Globes, however, where he won Best Drama Actor for Universal’s historical epic. Giamatti won Best Comedy Actor at the same ceremony and then made a huge stride towards the Oscar podium by edging out Murphy to win Best Actor at the Critics Choice Awards. Both men are nominated at SAG, where we think Giamatti will triumph, while they are also going head to head at the BAFTAs. This is where we think Murphy can claw back some power in this race.

This article contains Past Lives spoilers.
Nora and Arthur are both writers, though chosen mediums diverge. She is a playwright who once dreamed of a Pulitzer but would now settle for a Tony; he is a novelist whose books sell well enough to help afford an apartment in the eye-watering real estate of New York City’s Lower East Side. But not a big apartment. Both know what makes a good story, and yet one of the most intriguing aspects of their marriage is that only Arthur sees—or perhaps is the only one who allows himself to see—the literary sweep of their lives.
And how much hackier it could have been in lesser hands.
“What a good story this is,” Arthur remarks midway through Past Lives, drawing attention to the unlikely series of events which compose his and Nora’s experiences, as well as the film we’re watching.
