The Simpsons Season 33 Episode 1
Why don’t we do the show right here, Mickey Rooney or Judy Garland might ask in a Hollywood Golden Age movie about barnstorming local theater. Sadly, The Simpsons’ “The Star of the Backstage” can’t go Rent-free. The techies, theater-geeks, and all the animators pull out almost all the stops for the season 33 premiere, but offer a mixed bag, even when it takes a Wicked turn.
The premise is great. It begins at the funeral for Springfield High School’s theater director Franklin Chase, and Marge wants to bring the whole gang back together for one last revival of their senior year production, only to find she was never really part of the group. The show is called “Y2K: The Millennium Bug,” and the opening ode to pre-millennial paranoia teases wonderful promise with lines like “How will I...

A recording of the late Nick Cordero’s one-man show will be released by Broadway Records on September 17, marking what would have been the actor’s 42nd birthday.
Broadway Records and Cordero’s wife Amanda Kloots announced the release today of Live Your Life, a live recording of the Broadway actor’s April 2019 show at New York’s Feinstein’s/54 Below cabaret.
“Nick would be absolutely thrilled to hear this news,” Kloots wrote on Instagram. “I’ve never seen my husband work so hard on something and be so nervous to perform. I was so proud of him and absolutely loved watching him onstage these two nights. He created this show from scratch, choosing songs to tell a story… his story. There’s some Broadway tunes with fun guest stars, some pop, standards, a little Latin and of course the encore is Live Your Life.”

Don’t feel bad if you haven’t watched every single outcome of the “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt: Kimmy vs. the Reverend” interactive special because Ellie Kemper hasn’t either, and she lived it. “I know that I have not seen all of it. I remember reading things in the script that I haven’t watched yet, so it takes time to go through every iteration,” Kemper told Gold Derby (watch above). “So, no, I actually have not seen all of it yet. It’s so lovely because there’s all these little Easter eggs. If you really work hard, you can watch every piece of it.”

Ellie Kemper opens the door of her “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” green room — backstage at the show’s sprawling set in Greenpoint, Brooklyn — clad in a woman-sized, painfully Diy facsimile of a Girl Scout uniform. The green felt sash drops over her drab cotton prairie dress, the one that her character, Kimmy, wears in the bunker that she escaped from in the first season. The “badges” are all bits and scraps of trash — like a single dry macaroni, or a few artfully sewn-on can tabs. Kemper, laughing, explains that she’s shooting a flashback scene where she and Cyndee (Sara Chase), bored and isolated beyond sense in the bunker, concoct a fantasy of selling Girl Scout cookies. The coconut, apparently, is fingernails.

Between Marvel, sitcoms, and returning favourites, Netflix is producing more and more original content, here's what we can expect in 2015...
Not happy with being the undisputable king of subscription streaming TV and films, Netflix has spent the last few years finding its footing in creating original content. It's enjoyed some big hits with the likes of House Of Cards and Orange Is The New Black, but has also produced some less well-received properties such as Hemlock Grove and Arrested Development’s resurrection.
Marco Polo, the service's big budget drama following Mongolian leader Kublai Khan, was a sizeable risk for the network and one that didn't exactly lit the critical world alight (though a second season may well help with the teething problems).
Looking ahead, it seems that we’ll be seeing a new face of Netflix before the year is out. Netflix has more upcoming projects than ever before and...

30 Rock creator Tina Fey’s Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, a comedy set to star The Office‘s Ellie Kemper, is moving from NBC to Netflix, where it has been pre-emptively renewed for a second season.
NBC originally snagged the comedy, about a woman who escapes from a doomsday cult and starts life over in New York, following a bidding war involving multiple major networks. However, the show, which Fey co-exec produces with her former 30 Rock partner Robert Carlock, was left off the network’s fall slate and never received a time slot, despite having been ordered straight to series.
Said NBC Entertainment chairman Robert Greenblatt:
“When the opportunity arose for Tina Fey and Robert Carlock to premiere their new show on Netflix with a two-season commitment, we decided this was the best possible scenario to launch this captivating new series. While it was originally developed for NBC, we have a...

Kristoffer Cusick bounced from Hardbody to First Date on Broadway
First Date is a new Broadway musical about a blind date between Aaron (Zachary Levi from Chuck fame) and Casey (Krysta Rodriguez from Smash) and feeds into the fears, anxieties and other emotional traps that go along with dating.
The other actors play multiple characters throughout the musical, but Casey’s gay Bff, Reggie (played by Kristoffer Cusick) stands out not just for the burst of energy he brings to every moment he has in the show, but also by the fact that he’s someone we can probably all relate to.
I spoke with Cusick recently about landing the First Date role just as another Broadway gig was ending. He also shared his thought about being out professionally and being comfortable with who he is.

The Troma classic The Toxic Avenger is a rite of passage. Into what, it’s hard to say, but once you’ve seen it, you can never turn back—and it has no doubt had an effect on every viewer fortunate enough to view the film since its initial release in 1984. For some, that effect has been an inspiration to spread the movie’s unique joys, exposing the genius of Lloyd Kaufman and co. to the largest amount of the uninitiated as they can. Award-winning playwright Joe Dipietro and Bon Jovi keyboardist David Bryan decided to do so by turning the concept into an equally insane, wildly creative musical that’s currently playing at New York City’s New World Stages (340 West 50th Street).
“I saw the movie many years ago, and really dug it,” Dipietro says. “I love Lloyd’s aesthetic style. It’s funny, irreverent and way out there.
