Sony will be opening the Kendrick Brothers’ new documentary Show Me the Father on Sept. 10, while the studio has dated a 10th anniversary re-release of the filmmakers’ Courageous for Oct. 15. Show Me the Father explores the fatherhood of God.
“Everyone has a father story, but not everyone has learned how to redeem it for their own good and the good of others,” said executive producer Stephen Kendrick. “Even though fatherlessness is directly connected to so much brokenness in today’s world, we wanted to go beyond traditional documentaries and show how God is the perfect Father and can amazingly provide the love and healing to anyone at any stage in life.”
“In September 2011, Courageous was estimated to open at the box office with $1.5 million and it ended the weekend the #1 new movie, with $9.4 million in the first frame,” said Rich Peluso, EVP/Head of Affirm Films. “We are thrilled to...

Gerard Butler and Morgan Freeman are leading the way at the North American box office with “Angel Has Fallen” on its way to about $20 million, early estimates showed Friday.
Should forecasts hold, “Angel Has Fallen” will take in about double the next title, Universal’s second weekend of raunchy comedy “Good Boys” with about $10 million. “Good Boys,” which appears to have broken the recent comedy slump at multiplexes, will wind up the weekend with more than $40 million in its first 10 days.
A quartet of titles will be battling for third place in the $7 million to $9 million range with the opening of Sony-Affirm’s faith-based “Overcomer” as the early leader, followed by Disney’s sixth weekend of “The Lion King” as it heads to $510 million, Universal’s fourth frame of “Hobbs & Shaw” and Fox Searchlight’s launch of horror-comedy “Ready or Not.”

Calling a faith-based release “preachy” could seem redundant, since these productions are designed as vehicles to evangelize. However, even within its spiritual niche, Alex Kendrick’s “Overcomer” shocks for being even more oppressively loquacious than some of its many big-screen cousins.
If every line of stale dialogue landed like a hammer to the head, audiences would walk out victims of blunt-force trauma.
Kendrick, who co-wrote this with brother and perennial collaborator Stephen Kendrick, directs himself as John Harrison, a beloved basketball coach and history teacher at a Christian high school in small-town America. Life’s idyllic until his self-image crumbles after the local plant closes, forcing thousands of blue-collar workers to move elsewhere with their families. Lacking players, John is reassigned to coach the cross-country team, composed of one athlete with asthma: orphaned African American teen Hannah Scott (newcomer Aryn Wright-Thompson).

“Angel Has Fallen,” the action sequel starring Gerard Butler and Morgan Freeman, earned $1.5 million at the box office Thursday from preview screenings at 2,600 locations. It opens on 3,286 screens this weekend.
Lionsgate is releasing “Angel Has Fallen” following up from the success of both “Olympus Has Fallen” in 2013 and “London Has Fallen” in 2016. It’s the widest release this weekend as the summer comes to a close, with Fox Searchlight’s horror and thriller “Ready or Not” having already opened on Wednesday.
The studio is projecting “Angel” to open in the low to mid teen range this weekend, with independent trackers estimating approximately $13 million. For a comparison, “London Has Fallen” earned only $850,000 in its debut opposite a then record-setting weekend for Disney’s “Zootopia,” but it ultimately raked in a $21.6 million opening. The original “Olympus Has Fallen” opened to $30.3 million and grossed $170.2 million worldwide.

When you cast an actor like Brendan Coyle, a familiar, welcoming face to people who’ve seen popular British television before, there’s an expectation that he’s going to be an important figure in the story. After the fact that he doesn’t show up until the second episode of “Requiem,” the new Netflix/BBC supernatural co-production, it’s almost instantly clear that his biggest moments will come late in this story. And come they do, in the form of a betrayal that’s not exactly surprising, but is still the last shocking piece of a puzzle six episodes in the making.
[Editor’s Note: The following article contains spoilers for “Requiem” Season 1, including the ending.]
The aftermath of Stephen Kendrick luring Matilda (Lydia Wilson) to an underground lair as an offering for an ancient ritual helped to cap off a fascinating season. As “Requiem” ends with a visibly altered Matilda smiling, the credits roll without explaining whether...

For a series that begins with a man jumping off the roof of a mansion, “Requiem” has a surprisingly steady build. Like the camera slowly creeping toward a mysterious figure in the forest or a room at the end of the hallway, Netflix’s latest British import (first aired in the U.K. on BBC One) is a six-episode blend of mystery, suspense, and horror that tackles a big idea on a small scale. Wrestling with identity, family, and what can unite a community, “Requiem” is unsettling for more than just the unexplained forces that may or may not be at work in this Welsh town.
The conduit for this journey for answers is Matilda Gray (Lydia Wilson), a cellist preparing for her latest high-profile bookings as a lauded classical performer. Then a jarring, unexpected family tragedy rousts her out of her metropolitan life and sends her on a quest...

Slick production values cannot overcome a preachy script full of strained metaphors delivered by wooden actors. Like a corporate promo video for God. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing

If you’ve ever wondered what a corporate promo video made by God’s marketing department would look like, now we know. Slick production values cannot overcome a literally preachy script full of embarrassingly strained metaphors delivered by wooden actors… and that’s even before we get to the scene in which an old lady disarms a mugger with the power of Jesus; the sincerity of that bit only renders it all the more ludicrous.

That's what Sony has done with its faith-based drama "War Room," the fifth film from Alex and Stephen Kendrick. The film's opening weekend earned $11.35 million, and which Sony says continued into the week, with impressive Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday numbers: "Our weekday numbers have surpassed previous Kendrick Brothers films and suggest the momentum will continue into the second frame," said Ben Howard, Senior VP of Provident Films. The hip-hop biopic is the first film to sit atop the Us box office charts for three weekends in a row since Jurassic World
For the third weekend in a row, hip-hop biopic Straight Outta Compton dominated at the Us box office, earning an impressive $13.2m (£8.6m) – pushing its domestic total to a whopping $134.1m (£87.3m), making it the highest-grossing musical biopic of all time, according to Variety. It’s also the first film to top the Us box office for three consecutive weekends since Jurassic World.
Despite Straight Outta Compton’s continued success, the real story at the American box office this weekend was the surprise showing of War Room, a low-budget, religious-themed drama from Alex Kendrick and his brother, writing and producing partner Stephen Kendrick, the pair behind Fireproof and Courageous (Variety dubbed them the Spielbergs of Christian cinema). 'War Room' movie: The Power of Prayer. The Power of Prayer at the domestic box office: 'War Room' (sort of) beats 'Straight Outta Compton' A miracle was needed for any of this weekend's new entries to beat the sleeper hit of 2015, F. Praise the Power of Prayer and the Power of Expert Targeted Marketing. “If you haven't started already, pray for this movie,” urges an Evangelical Christian website featuring a War Room promotional giveaway, “that the Holy Spirit would be in abundance at each showing of the film, that hearts would be impressed to pray more than ever and that revival will happen as a result!” Directed by Alex Kendrick and co-written by Kendrick and his brother, Stephen Kendrick, the Power of...

'Straight Outta Compton' poster. Weekend box office: 'Straight Outta Compton' to beat weak competitors, but still far from being top blockbuster directed by black filmmaker If you thought last weekend was bad at the U.S. and Canada box office, you should see what's in store for this weekend, Aug. 28-30, '15. For starters, only one movie, F. Gary Gray's sleeper hit Straight Outta Compton, is expected to earn more than $10 million. The rest – and that includes Zac Efron, Owen Wilson, Pierce Brosnan, and the Power of (Christian) Prayer – will perform quite powerlessly indeed. In case Straight Outta Compton reaches the box office gurus' estimated $15 million, it will get close to the $140 million mark. Bear in mind there's no guarantee that will happen; despite basically no competition, the drop-off rate of Gray's hip hopping film was steeper than expected last weekend. Alex and Stephen Kendrick’s faith-based film argues that domestic abuse can be cured by retiring to a bunker and praying. It’s an odd plan of attack
Is your husband a self-centered jerk? Does he ignore your needs, pay no attention to your adorable daughter, scold you for giving financial help to your troubled sister? Does he have a wandering eye and come dangerously close to committing adultery? Is he embezzling from his job? Well, you should know that it’s all your fault. When you find his behavior upsetting and take him to task you are only protracting the struggle. What you need to do is surrender, go in the closet and pray.
