Two years on from the publication of the Government’s Action Plan for Animal Welfare, which promised to ‘revolutionise the treatment of animals in the UK’, celebrities including Dame Joanna Lumley, Leona Lewis, Susie Dent and Will Young have written to Prime Minister Rishi Sunak stating that animals “have been badly let down”.
The celebrities, joining forces with leading UK animal charities Animal Aid, Compassion in World Farming, Four Paws UK, Humane Society International/UK, PETA UK and the Rspca, lament a lack of progress on addressing issues such as ending live animal exports, exploring action on the import and sale of fur products and banning keeping primates as pets. The signatories call on the Government to deliver its Action Plan in full.

Countdown star Susie Dent has revealed the identity of two Hollywood stars who “apparently” watch the show.
The long-running Channel 4 game show, which has been on the air since 1982, recently welcomed new presenter Colin Murray. He replaced Anne Robinson.
While promoting his new stint as host, Murray and his co-stars Dent and Rachel Riley were asked about their favourite Dictionary Corner guests, to which Murray named Richard Osman.
Riley opted for Sir Ranulph Fiennes, Chris Packham and Tim Rice, whom she said were “all incredible”.
Dent, who sits next to the dictionary corner celebrity guest, remained hesitant to name one, telling Metro.co.uk it was “impossible to choose”.
Dent said she has “the best seat in the house sitting next to so many fascinating guests”.
When asked if they “know of any unexpected fans of the show”, Dent said that former host Richard Whiteley “always reminded us that...

Countdown star Susie Dent has shared an “exceptionally appropriate” word of the day ahead of the announcement of the UK’s new prime minister.
On Monday (5 September), Liz Truss is expected to be announced as the new prime minister after a six-week Tory leadership campaign.
Voting among the estimated 200,000 Tory members tasked with choosing Boris Johnson’s successor closed on Friday (2 September), and either the foreign secretary or Rishi Sunak will be declared the victor at 12.30pm by 1922 Committee chair Sir Graham Brady.
Ahead of the announcement, Countdown lexicographer Dent shared a “hilarious” choice for her word of the day.
“Word of the day is Zugwang [tzoog-tzwung],” wrote Dent on Twitter. “A situation in chess (and life) in which a move must be made, but each possible one will make the situation worse.”

Channel 4’s groundbreaking “Black to Front” initiative, which sees the network’s entire schedule led by Black talent on and off screen for one day, has garnered mostly positive reactions despite concerns about tokenism.
Among the programs was a brief return for popular 1990s morning show “The Big Breakfast,” this time with comedian Mo Gilligan and presenter Aj Odudu slipping into original hosts Johnny Vaughn and Denise van Outen’s seats on the couch, and distinguished newsreader Sir Trevor McDonald taking over from Anne Robinson on “Countdown.” “Black to Front” will continue to air into primetime, with some of the specially commissioned shows like “Highlife” and “Big Age” premiering later on Friday.
There was some concern ahead of the broadcast that the initiative was tokenistic. “As a black person in the UK TV industry all i wanted was a fair and equal shot as my white counterparts..,” comedian London Hughes...

Simon Mayo chats to us about writing, the importance of Stephen King, politics, Blame, and Basil Exposition...
Simon Mayo is a man of many talents. To cinema folk, he's one of the two voices behind Wittertainment, the BBC's flagship film programme (wassup, etc). To others, he plays choice songs on Radio 2. To me: he was also chairman of Melchester Rovers. And to a growing number of people, he's the author of some really fine works of fiction.
His latest, Blame, sees him heading into the world of Young Adult. And over a hot drink (him: civilised green tea, me: coffee caffeine rocket fuel concoction, no biscuits) we had a chat about what could almost be an accidental shift into non-fiction...
The last time I interviewed you I messed up my opening question when I tried to follow the Simon Mayo interview handbook, but I think I’ve got this nailed now.

Countdown's Rachel Riley can't help but see the innuendo in everything after her latest unfortunate letter arrangement.
Co-star Susie Dent amused Riley and fans of the Channel 4 show with her latest Word of the Day, introducing her Twitter followers to the word 'jirble'.
Before you ask, she didn't misspell the name of a small rodent. According to Dent, "to jirble is to spill liquid as the result of clumsy hands".
Riley immediately decided to turn Dent's tweet into something rude, and fans then decided to insert 'jirble' into their own filthy sentences.
One wrote: "My dad said if I was to jerble I'd go blind and lose my hair. He was half right. (sic)"
To jirble is to spill liquid as the result of clumsy hands: e.g. I've just jirbled tea all over the duvet. Morning.

They've entertained millions with their 5 live film review show and Wittertainment podcast off-shoot, but now Mark Kermode and Simon Mayo are in full-vision thanks to new online offering The Film Thing.
Available through the duo's YouTube channel and the BBC website, the first episode of The Film Thing brings Kermode and Mayo's movie debates to the screen with reviews of Unfriended, Two By Two, Monsters: Dark Continent and Far from the Madding Crowd.
The 23-minute show also features a cameo appearance from Jason Isaacs*, Countdown's Susie Dent explaining Wittertainment term 'Brechtian Alienation Device' and an extended interview with Carey Mulligan.
The Film Thing is made by Somethin' Else, who also produce the 5 live show and the podcast.
Somethin' Else CEO and Film Thing exec producer Jez Nelson told Digital Spy that the format is an "extension of the podcast", and serves as a one-off to test the water for a longer series.

It must be quite the Countdown conundrum when you realise you've got a high-scoring word, but it's one that's going to make Nick Hewer blush.
Myleene Klass wasn't fazed, though. The radio presenter would have won eight points for her glorious "gobshite".
The former Hear'Say star giggled as she told host Hewer: "I got a rude one. It's an eight... gobshite."
While Rachel Riley sheepishly put the letters in place, Dictionary Corner expert Susie Dent confirmed that it was allowed.
Dent told viewers that "gobshite" was "chiefly Irish" and "vulgar slang". So, there you go.
Myleene's crass word came just a week after Riley had to spell out the word "erection", which also won eight points, on the Countdown board.
Meanwhile, Channel 4 has announced that 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown will return for a new series in May, including special guest Joey Essex.

8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown will return for a new series in May and, yep, Joey Essex will be back.
Host Jimmy Carr will be back on the show alongside team captains Sean Lock and Jon Richardson and Countdown stars Rachel Riley and Susie Dent.
Once again, Dent will be joined in Dictionary Corner by a host of celebrities including Johnny Vegas, Joe Lycett and Nina Conti. And then there's Joey Essex - who won't be in Dictionary Corner this time, but will be helping out Riley with the letters and numbers. So that's going to go well.
The former Towie star previously appeared on the show in September, when he vowed that he could handle the Countdown clock because he's "a good counter" and strangely got confused about whether or not he was on Countdown.

Rachel Riley and Nick Hewer had to try stifle their laughter when Dictionary Corner guest Dave Myers suggested a cheeky seven-letter suggestion on the daytime quiz.
The presenters chuckled after Myers revealed that his best effort in a letters game was 'todgers'.
However, it wasn't just a case of Myers being smutty. Dictionary Corner's Susie Dent did confirm that 'todgers' was a valid Countdown word as it can be found in the dictionary.
Countdown isn't a stranger to such embarrassing moments. In a recent episode, Riley was left red-faced when an unexpected 'erection' appeared.
Meanwhile, in a 2010 episode, the letters, U, D, F, C, K and E all appeared. Thankfully, the contestants avoided the crude and obvious six-letter option, opting for the more respectable 'Caged' and 'Faced'.
There was also an awkward moment in a 2013 episode when the Countdown Conundrum round spelled out the words 'itchy semi'.

We love a good quiz show here at Digital Spy, so when Gethin Jones invited us to come down and play his new series The 21st Question, how could we refuse? It's a pretty simple premise - a group of contestants compete but only the one who correctly answers the 21st Question has a chance at going through to win some big money.
When we weren't scowling at our inability to get a question right, we caught up with Gethin to find out 21 more things about him (including his weird celebrity crush!) and the show, which kicks off this afternoon...
1. The concept of the show is very simple - but there are lots of tactics!

Countdown's Dictionary Corner is going digital.
The printed Oxford dictionary used by the show's lexicographer Susie Dent is being swapped for its online counterpart, reports Radio Times.
Dent will no longer need to flick through pages of the dictionary during the programme, and also won't need to use the pen cam to show words onscreen when the changes are introduced on Monday, June 30.
Dent said: "I'm excited that we will now be able to reflect the very latest changes to English by using an online dictionary that's updated every three months.
"The principles of Dictionary Corner will remain exactly the same - it's simply the technology that is changing."
The traditional printed dictionary has been used on Countdown since the show started over 30 years ago.
Countdown is Channel 4's longest-running show, and is currently presented by Nick Hewer and Rachel Riley.

Danny Dyer misses Little Willy. The straight-talking actor joined the 'EastEnders' cast as Mick Carter, the new landlord of the Queen Vic pub, last month but is disappointed that late character Ethel Skinner's pet pug Willy is no longer a member of the cast. Ethel never had a scene without Willy.'' The 36-year-old star has a secret crush on sexy wordsmith Susie Dent from quiz show 'Countdown' and admitted he...
