"You are so far up your career's ass, that you can't let anyone else in!" Oh damnnn! Decal Releasing has unveiled an official trailer for a girls trip raucous comedy called Tripped Up, from producer / filmmaker Shruti Ganguly. This is getting a small theatrical and then VOD release at the end of October. It's a comedy about friends bonding while on a trip to a food fest. Aspiring chef Lizzy sets off with her three best friends in tow to compete in the prestigious Saucy Food Festival. What begins as a calculated career move quickly turns into a madcap misadventure full of food, fun and female bonding, where the girls learn that "struggle" can be the secret ingredient. Which is literally exactly what one of the characters says to them. This stars Leah Lewis, Ashley Moore, Ariel Winter, Sasha Fox, and Vanessa Williams. Looks fun, but barely, as the rest of it looks really bad.

I’ve got more after...

Writer/director Suha Araj will received full production funds for her short film Rosa, Tribeca Enterprises has announced. Araj was one of five projects under consideration as part of the annual Through Her Lens: The Tribeca Chanel Women’s Filmmaker Program, a mentorship project sponsored by Tribeca Enterprises and Chanel.
Araj and producer Maryam Keshavarz will receive $80,000 of the program’s $100,000 grants, along with support from Tribeca Studios. Four other participants each will receive $5,000 to further development on their short films. The awards were announced following last week’s three-day workshop.
“I’m thrilled and touched,” said Araj. “This story comes from a very personal place and I hope to connect with a lot of different communities with this project. These three days with the Through Her Lens program have been so supportive and have helped me sharpen this story and has created an amazing network of women who I hope grow with.

Paul Thomas Anderson’s legion of fans will get their chance to see the filmmaker’s latest Inherent Vice – at least those in New York and L.A. after a long build-up of anticipation. Studio Warner Bros. is handling the director’s latest, set in a drug-laced L.A. in the 1970s. Barring some unforeseen cataclysm, the feature is easily going to be this week’s b.o. superstar and likely one of the year’s biggest per screen debuts. How it will fare against other fall b.o. knock-outs like Searchlight’s Birdman or TWC’s The Imitation Game remains to be seen. A slew of Specialty openers will coincide with the Inherent Vice juggernaut. A24 will open Oscar-nominated filmmaker Atom Egoyan’s The Captive day and date after an early fall bow in the director’s native Canada. Sundance Selects will expose Free The Nipple in New York...

Not unlike Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s rapport with the festival, Sundance has become a place where James Franco/RabbitBandini Productions gets to both test-drive and showcase his creative output. Last year’s fest saw him showcase both Interior. Leather Bar. and kink, and while we fully expect to see the filmmaker there for Bukowski, with Holy Land as a possible outside shot, there potentially might be room in the New Frontier section for an anthology of films that were ultimately “patched” together by Nyu graduate students. Closer to Tar than the previous pair of mentioned titles, shooting on Black Dog, Red Dog began in early 2012 with a tally of ten, mostly inexperienced filmmakers that for at least nine of them had to win a contest to be part of the “larger” project.
Gist: Featuring Franco, Olivia Wilde, Chloë Sevigny, Logan Marshall-Green, this is based on Stephen Dobyns‘ book of poetry.

For every mainstream studio film that James Franco stars in he seems to make six indie films. Of those indie films, he is usually directing or writing them with mixed results. In the case of Tar, Franco is content to just act for twelve Nyu film students that he likely met during his time at the university. Those directors (Edna Luise Biesold, Sarah-Violet Bliss, Gabrielle Demeestere, Alexis Gambis, Shruti Ganguly, Brooke Goldfinch, Shripriya Mahesh, Pamela Romanowsky, Bruce Thierry...

“Tracking Shot” is a monthly featurette here on Ioncinema.com that looks at a dozen or so projects that are moments away from lensing and this October we see a couple of items that we could certainly circle as potential Cannes 2014 bait. Thanks to our friends at Production Weekly for the helping hand in curating our list of future must see items.
Among the top foreign film productions, The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover‘s Peter Greenaway is looking at a late October, possible November start to begin filming a fragment of the great Soviet master filmmaker Sergei Eisenstein’s bio timeline. Eisenstein In Guanajuato will cover the portion of the filmmaker’s post Battleship Potemkin career, with Eisenstein landing in Mexico after Hollywood studios balked at the idea of working with him and in its place finds romance. The Girl Who Played with Fire‘s Daniel Alfredson...

Starring James Franco in the lead, Tar is a collaborative effort between twelve students that has perhaps the greatest cast of any student film ever made.
The film will be debuting at the International Rome Film Festival next month, and the first two images from the film have surfaced online.
Based on the life of Pulitzer Prize-winning poet, C. K. Williams, the film is written and directed by Edna Biesold, Sarah-Violet Bliss, Bruce Thierry Cheung, Gabrielle Demeestere, Alexis Gambis, Shruti Ganguly, Brooke Goldfinch, Omar Zuniga Hidalgo, Shripriya Mahesh, Pamela Romanowsky, Tine Thomasen, and Virginia Urreiztieta, with supervision from Franco himself.
Franco stars as C. K. Williams, alongside Mila Kunis, Jessica Chastain, Zach Braff, Bruce Campbell, and Henry Hopper, who will be playing the younger version of the poet.
Tar will be making its world premiere in Rome next month, and hopefully will be picked up at the festival for distribution elsewhere.

James Franco doesn't stop for one second. Currently filming "As I Lay Dying," Franco has been busy overseeing two other projects this year, omnibus efforts by Nyu grad students, "Tar" and "Black Dog Red Dog," based the poems of C.K. Williams and Stephen Dobyns, respectively. And one of them is ready to see the light day. The Rome Film Festival has announced that "Tar" will make be making its world premiere (as well as a Franco short entitled "Dreams," of course) as it rolls out the red carpet next month. Remember these names -- Edna Biesold, Sarah-Violet Bliss, Bruce Thierry Cheung, Gabrielle Demeestere, Alexis Gambis, Shruti Ganguly, Brooke Goldfinch, Omar Zuniga Hidalgo, Shripriya Mahesh, Pamela Romanowsky, Tine Thomasen, Virginia Urreiztieta -- because they are students-turned-filmmakers, and undoubtedly some of them will be moving on to even bigger and better things. The project saw Franco working the phones a...

Collaborative features are in the air. Friday we glimpsed the end of auteur culture with Audrey Ewell's post on the documentary The 99 Percent Film. What happens though when the collaborative film is an omnibus narrative? Are twelve more auteurs born into the world? How are we going to navigate this new future of team-based filmmaking? What are the Best Practices we have to put in place. Producer Shruti Ganguly shares some lessons she's learned from working on James Franco's latest concoction. Collaboration is synonymous with filmmaking and one can often find quotations from filmmakers and writers regarding this aspect – David Mamet describes filmmaking...
