A college freshman finds more than finals and dorm life on his mind when he joins the secret magical society known as the Hermetic Order of the Blue Rose in Netflix's new series The Order. Following a first season filled with ravenous werewolves and dark magic, The Order was renewed for a second season by Netflix, and we caught up with the series' composer, Patric Carid, to discuss the eclectic musical arsenal he used to create the show's grand, atmospheric musical elements.
Thanks for taking the time to catch up with us, Patric, and congratulations on your score for The Order! How did you get involved as the composer for The Order?
Patric Caird: Thanks, and it’s my pleasure. Showrunner Dennis Heaton and I have been friends/colleagues for many years, starting in the ’90s on an Nfb animated short entitled Deadly Deposits. Over the years, we...

Few film franchises hold a candle to Syfy’s long-running Sharknado series.
This is, after all, a collection of movies unapologetic in their commitment to delivering ludicrous action scenes and a storyline so bizarre – so bat-shit insane – that it’s arguably redefined the ‘so good, it’s bad’ cliché.
Birthed in 2013, the franchise is now on the verge of launching its fifth installment, Sharknado 5: Global Swarming, which promises a whole new concoction of silly science and sharknadoes teeming with hungry fish. Fin Shepard (Ian Ziering) and his bionic wife, April (Tara Reid), are once again back in the thick of things, only this time, their escapades will take them on an international quest to rescue their young son, after he’s swept up by a traveling ‘nado.

Syfy has put a Van Helsing TV series into development, focusing on female protagonist Vanessa Helsing…
Presumably hoping to shake off any lingering memories of the Hugh Jackman-starring movie, Syfy is putting its own Van Helsing TV series together.
Following in the footsteps of Ghostbusters and – as of yesterday – Ocean’s Eleven, Syfy’s protagonist here will be Vanessa Helsing, a female version of the iconic Vampire hunter.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Vanessa Helsing will be ‘the next in a lineage of warriors who must lead mankind against a world controlled by vampires.’ She will be ‘resurrected five years in the future’ and find that she is ‘essentially humanity’s last hope to lead an offensive to take back what has been lost.’
The word ‘lineage’ there makes us think that this new take might use Professor Abraham van Hesling – the original version of the character,...

Syfy is doubling down and giving two of its freshman dramas Season 2 renewals. The cable network announced today that both Dark Matter and Killjoys have been picked up for second seasons, both of which will premiere in 2016. Created by Joseph Mallozzi and Paul Mullie, executive producers and writers of the Stargate franchise, and developed with Prodigy Pictures (Lost Girl), Dark Matter is based on Mallozzi and Mullie’s graphic novel of the same name and follows six people who wake up on a derelict spaceship with no memories of who they are or how they got on board. The series stars Melissa O’Neil, Marc Bendavid, Anthony Lemke, Alex Mallari Jr. and Jodelle Ferland with Roger Cross and Zoie Palmer. “With its mysterious premise and fascinating characters, Dark Matter has built an incredibly loyal, passionate and engaged fan base,” said Chris Regina, Senior Vice President, Program Strategy, Syfy. “We look forward to another…...

Surprise! There's going to be a Sharknado 4. Yes, the sharks will get sucked up into waterspouts yet again. But this fourth movie will have a different twist: Viewers get to decide the fate of Tara Reid's character. The third TV flick, Sharknado 3: Oh Hell No! (seriously, that was the title), ended with space shuttle wreckage coming straight for Reid's character, April, but cut to black before the impact. The movie then informed fans, "You decide if #AprilLives or #AprilDies." Fans can vote with those hashtags on Twitter or on sharknado.syfy.com with the character's fate finally being revealed in Sharknado 4, likely airing next summer. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Chris Regina,...

Because three "Sharknado" movies just aren't enough, Syfy has already greenlit "Sharknado 4" -- and fans can control a major plot point in the flick.
As those who watched the "Sharknado 3: Oh Hell No!" premiere on Wednesday night already know (Spoilers ahead), the movie ended on a cliff-hanger centered around Tara Reid's character, April. After having just sawed her way out of a shark -- and delivered a baby inside its belly -- April is embracing her family on the beach when a piece of space debris (it makes sense, kind of, if you watched the film) comes crashing down toward her head.
So does she survive? That's what fans of the franchise get to decide, as no sooner had the flick faded to black did the hashtags #AprilLives and #AprilDies appeared on the screen, with Syfy imploring viewers to use social media (and a dedicated voting page...

Syfy returns to the goofball well Wednesday with Sharknado 3, the annual summer tradition that finds stars Ian Ziering and Tara Reid — along with a number of celebrity guest stars — defending the "Feast Coast" from the latest unlikely attack. The sequel — Sharknado 3: Oh, Hell, No! — features the meteorologically unlikely phenomenon hitting not only Washington, D.C., but Orlando, Fla., as well. Ahead of the it's-so-bad-it's-good TV movie, The Hollywood Reporter caught up with Chris Regina, senior vp program strategy at Syfy and Sharknado 3 associate producer, about the process of putting

Syfy will continue to take a bite out of Bitten for another year. The supernatural drama, which is produced by Entertainment One, has been picked up for a 10-episode third season, which will air on Syfy in 2016. Variety was the first to report the news. “Bitten‘s emotional and engrossing storyline, combined with some truly creepy horror moments, really resonated with fans this past season,” said Chris Regina, Svp Program Strategy at Syfy and Chiller. “We eagerly anticipate seeing where the next chapter of Elena and her werewolf pack’s lives leads us in Season 3.” “We’re delighted that Bitten will be returning to Syfy,” said John Morayniss, Chief Executive Officer, Entertainment One Television. “Alongside No Equal Entertainment and Hoodwink Entertainment, we are thrilled to continue this incredible journey and looking forward to sinking our teeth into what’s sure to be another nail-biting season.” Executive produced by J.B. It’s only fitting that a B-movie franchise geared toward generating social media interest for its endangered clutch of faded stars has kicked up the silliness for its third instalment. Syfy’s uber-successful Sharknado series is currently in production for the third outing that’s now garnered a suitably wacky subtitle. Sharknado 3: Oh Hell No! is heading to the small screen this July, and network brass are behind it 100%.
In a statement accompanying the announcement Syfy’s Svp, Chris Regina said:
“We wanted this third title to boldly go where no shark movie has gone before. Sharknado 3: Oh Hell No! embraces the larger-than-life irreverence that has made these movies so popular and entertaining.
Where Sharknado destroyed Los Angeles, and Sharknado 2 saw New York City subjected to the perils of a shark-infested weather incident, Sharknado 3 will unleash its wrath on the nation’s capital. Starting out in Washington D.

(Cbr) TVLine has reported that Syfy has added "Dark Matter," a drama series based on the Dark Horse Comics limited series of the same name, to their 2015 schedule. The series was created by Joseph Mallozzi and Paul Mullie, a pair of writers and producers that have been associated with the "Stargate" franchise through it's evolution from "Sg-1" to "Universe." The duo will reportedly helm the thirteen episodes ordered by Syfy. The comic series, originally published in early 2012, tracks the advetures of a starship crew that wakes up from stasis with no clue as to who they are or what their mission is. The series featured art from Garry Brown and colors from Ryan Hill. "'Dark Matter' is a refreshing and entertaining space opera that blends an intriguing premise with fast-paced suspense," Syfy programming Svp Chris Regina told TVLine. That includes the three seasons of the swords-and-sandals drama as well as the six-part prequel Gods Of The Arena. Stargate and Poltergeist went on to become original series on Sci Fi, which ordered additional seasons — five for Stargate and one for Poltergeist. Syfy is doing well with its original series, and coming off the back of the popularity, and general awesomeness, of Helix, the network has announced two more series are coming your way.
With zombies now taking over the top spot in the ever-changing monster popularity consciousness, it’s no surprise that we’re getting another series focusing on the undead. Syfy‘s spin is Z Nation, and rather than kicking off with the appearance of the zombies, this one starts years after our zombie plague has already gutted most of humanity. Apparently, when someone immune to the plague finally turns up, we embark upon a quest to reach the other side of the country to hopefully make use of his blood in creating a cure.

Just in case anyone forgot, production company The Asylum are the masterminds behind SyFy’s most recent cultural phenomenon, Sharknado. You know, that creature feature about a tornado filled with sharks? I’ve inserted the above image to jog your memory just in case you forgot about all the chainsaw fighting action, and now I’m sure you’re all chomping at the bit just thinking about how The Asylum can bring their unmatched cinematic prowess to the ever-popular zombie genre. One can only assume we’ll be treated to another bit of episodic zombie brilliance, amassing viewing numbers comparable to The Walking Dead – no?
Seriously SyFy, why do you keep these guys in business? In an effort to let The Asylum get their schlocky paws on another popular genre, SyFy has ordered 13 episodes of a show titled Z Nation, a zombie action thriller “set three years after the zombie virus has gutted the country.

In recent years, Syfy has become better known for shlocky creature features like Sharktopus and Sharknado than high-quality sci-fi/fantasy programming, but the channel has been taking steps over the past few weeks to reclaim its title as the resident channel for sci-fi aficionados. Hot on the heels of ordering a TV adaptation of the Bruce Willis classic 12 Monkeys, green-lighting miniseries Ascension and drama Dominion, and renewing series Helix, Continuum, Lost Girl, Defiance and Haven, Syfy has ordered a miniseries rooted in Greek mythology, titled Olympus.
The 13-episode series will tell the story of a group of brave men and women who banished the gods to “the realm of the unconscious: a place they called the Underworld, or the Kingdom of Hades,” according to The Hollywood Reporter. Olympus follows a man named Hero, who grows from a young boy into a brilliant leader capable of taking on the gods themselves.

Syfy has scored two bonafide hits over the past few years with its acquired scripted series, Lost Girl and Continuum. It was also great that they acquired and aired Primeval: New World even though it was a one-season series, along with similarly-situated Sinbad.
Now Syfy has added another series to its list of acquireds, with the New Zealand series The Almighty Johnsons, about four modern-day brothers who have inherited the powers of Norse gods. It’s said to be a “compelling blend of fantasy and comedy” and “quirky”. I love ”quirky” but I reserve judgment as to whether or not this will qualify until I see it. I’ll definitely check them it out, but don’t we all kinda wish they could change the name?

Syfy has purchased the first two seasons of the New Zealand show, "The Almighty Johnsons." The comedic fantasy about Norse gods living in modern-day society will premiere in the United States at some point in 2014.
"The Almighty Johnsons" focuses on the four Johnson brothers -- ordinary guys living in Auckland who just happen to be the human incarnations of Norse gods. Unfortunately, they each have very limited superpowers from this and thus must deal with everyday life like everyone else. This mostly consists of mid-level jobs and drinking a lot of beer.
Beginning when the youngest Johnson brother finds out he's Odin and therefore must find his soulmate in order to avoid potentially global catastrophe, "The Almighty Johnsons" is currently airing its third season in New Zealand. The first two seasons -- 23 episodes -- are set to air on Syfy.

We have been reading, longingly, about the upcoming Canadian spinoff of the UK dinosaurs-in-the-modern-world series Primeval entitled Primeval: New World. We thought it would be fun. Then when we heard Niall Matter (Zane on Eureka) had been cast, we got even more jealous of our northern neighbors. Then when we heard it would be promoted as “darker and scarier” than the original series from whence it sprung, it sounded right up our alley. But since it wasn’t literally up Our alley, we sat and stewed.
But that is all behind us now as we rejoice over today’s announcement that Syfy has picked up the series for the U.S. market. First we have a trailer for you to check out, so that you can be as excited as we are, before getting to the details of the press release:
