Spotted at J-Film Pow Wow, though it's evidently been out for a few days now. At Twitch, Hugo Ozman describes Phoenix Wright as an "adaptation of the hugely popular Nintendo Gba and DS game franchise, Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney (original title: Gyakuten Saiban). Those who have played the game would know that it involves intense courtroom battles between the attorney and the prosecutor, where they have to present evidence, cross-examine witnesses and detect any contradictory statements that may hold the key to the case."

"Bearing a 2008 copyright, the film Human Zoo pops up for a one-week run at the New Beverly, presented by the theater's benefactor, Quentin Tarantino," writes Mark Olsen in the La Weekly. "Best known to moviegoers as the star of Luc Besson's Parisian fantasy Angel-a, model/artist Rie Rasmussen is here writer, director, star and even co-editor, with the story apparently based on the experiences of her adopted sister." Tarantino, notes Jeff Otto at the Playlist, calls Human Zoo "an electrifying directorial debut. It's as shocking and violent as it is moving and charming." Olsen, on the other hand: "Incoherent and self-indulgent, the film can't even manage to be particularly fun — even the supermodel sex scenes are disconcertingly disengaged, and everything is shot with a dingy patina that parades about as gritty realism."
Back to Otto: "Tarantino and Rasmussen have become good chums. She visited the set of Inglourious Basterds...

"If everything moves along and there's no major catastrophes, we're basically headed towards holograms. Why can't you have Hamlet in 3D who comes out to the audience and does 'To be or not to be?' I mean, they do in the theater. You have to think that way. Don't let the economics, and fashion, inhibit you if you're being creative."
That's Martin Scorsese, as quoted by Todd Gilchrist at the Playlist. As Steven Zeitchik also reports for the Los Angeles Times, the comments followed an enthusiastic endorsement of 3D, which in turn followed this weekend's Los Angeles premiere of Hugo, Scorsese's adaptation of Brian Selznick's novel The Invention of Hugo Cabret. We saw a few early reviews last month when Hugo was still a work-in-progress. Zeitchik: "Set in the late 1920s, Hugo tells of the titular orphan (Asa Butterfield) who lives in a train station, his relationship...

Just a couple of weeks ago, we were taking our first look at Koji Wakamatsu's 11.25 Jiketsu no Hi: Mishima Yukio to Wakamonotachi, based, of course, on the final days of Yukio Mishima. Now comes word from Wildgrounds and Chris MaGee at Toronto J-Film Pow Wow that we can look forward to not one but two films from Wakamatsu in 2012.
MaGee: "Either while he was shooting 11.25 Jiketsu no Hi: Mishima Yukio to Wakamonotachi or afterwards, Wakamatsu had the energy to bang out Kaien Hotel Blue, a contemporary drama about an ex-con whose plans for revenge are complicated after he meets a young woman. Once again Arata stars."
Wildgrounds: "Some shots from this trailer are reminiscent of Wakamatsu's early films, like for example, the deserted landscape from Violent Virgin/Ecstasy of the Angels. Also, it has this impossible love story vibe a la Running in Madness, Dying in Love…"

Cycle-in cinemas are popping up all over the UK, promoting the value of electricity and the joys of cycling
Imagine how a a love of cycling might be combined with a British version of the great American drive-in cinema screening. . Welcome to the outdoor cycle-in cinema, where people rock up on their bikes, and connect them to a generator that powers the show.
The UK's first cycle-in cinema appeared at The Big Chill in 2007, provided by Magnificent Revolution, a collective of about 10 engineers, artists, and environmentalists. Since then, screenings are popping up at festivals and in arts spaces all over the country. Check out Manchester-based Pow Wow Pedal Power, Bristol's Spoke 'n' Chain, The Bristol Bike Project and Electric Pedals, which has taken cycle-powered cinemas to Brighton, Womad and locations around London.

While most people may only know the man for his insanely entertaining fever dream House, director Nobuhiko Obayashi is still alive, kicking and making films.
Toronto J Film Pow Wow has revealed (via Tokyograph) that the director will next direct a film entitled Kono Sora no Hana. The film, his 41st, will be set in Nagaoka, during the area’s annual fireworks festival. With the hopes of promoting world piece, the festival has been in existence since 1946. Obayashi’s film will star Yasuko Matsuyuki.
Personally, as a huge fan of House, this is definitely one film that I’d love to see hit stateside or at least through The Criterion Collection on DVD. Obayashi is a director that I’d love to see more of within the Collection, so maybe this could be a part of a time spanning Eclipse set like The Allan King set. I think the premise sounds really intriguing,...

In the newly minted MTV series 'Supervideos,' directors and actors team up to create music videos. The first video in the series was set to the almost-extinct LCD Soundsystem's anthemic jam "Pow Wow" and starred Up In The Air actress Anna Kendrick. The second and most recent installment features Dave (younger brother of James) Franco and Emma (niece of Julia) Roberts commingling to Cult's infectious single "Go Outside." Directed by Patrick Hoelck, the piece is an homage to French New Wave Cinema, most notably Jean-Luc Godard's cult classic 'Le Mepris' ('Contempt').
Roberts plays an ersatz Brigitte Bardot come to life, much to the joy of Franco's character, whose television she emerges from. The two spend the night cavorting, partying, and smooching. Throughout an evening of romancing (and trying to bridge the gaps in cultural horizons that arise from time-travel via television) Franco desperately tries to...

Yes, my friends, you read that headline correctly — “Tetsuo: The Iron Man” director Shinya Tsukamoto has dipped his twisted little toes into the cutesy world of Japanese pop music. What’s surprising is that the embedded video, despite being a bit long in the tooth, actually retains the director’s surreal sensibilities. Sure, you’ll have to endure Cocco’s brand of musical output, but it’s honestly not that bad. Seriously. Of course, it may help things considerably if you’re a full-blown Tsukamoto junkie, which, of course, I am. Via J-Film Pow Wow...

Now, in much sadder news, legendary art director Kimihiko Nakamura, whose work can be seen in films like Twenty-Four Eyes, and films like The Insect Woman, Pigs and Battleships and Intentions of Murder (with the latter three being able to be found in the Pigs, Pimps, and Prostitutes collection), has passed away at the age of 94. He passed away on Tuesday of last week from renal failure.
While I’m not massively familiar with his work, I have seen The Insect Woman, and I must say, his work is impeccable, and visually stunning. He helped craft major films within the world that was the Japanese New Wave, particularly with director Shohei Imamura, and is a truly legendary figure within the world of Japanese film.

It looks like we have some good news coming out of the world of Japanese film to start the week off.
According to Toronto J-Film Pow Wow, director Neil Jordan (Mona Lisa), has been tapped to head the jury of the upcoming Tokyo International Film Festival, which will be in its 23rd year. The festival kicks off on October 23rd, and Jordan is a perfect name to headline this jury. He’s a fantastic filmmaker, with films like Mona Lisa (which is getting a Blu-ray release this August) and of course, his best known film, The Crying Game, and while he’s not the most well known name, he is well respected in the world of film.
I’ve always been a massive of Jordan and his work, and while some of his later films, particularly The Brave One, haven’t been on the highest end of the spectrum, he...

Who wore L’Wren Scott better?
Jessica Simpson turned up in NYC on March 10 wearing a fuschia lace frock by L’Wren Scott, but that wasn’t the first time we saw this pretty in pink get-up! Reese Witherspoon opted for the same exact dress in NYC in December. While both girls paired the look with black pumps, Jessica’s version hit mid-calf, yet Reese’s was slightly shorter, falling right above the knee. Jess’ version also had a black sash. While I think both gals look glam, Reese made a smart move when she shortened the hemline, making the dress much more flattering. Who do you think wore it better?

A brand new festival has popped up the Twitchfilm radar this weekend. The inaugural Shinsedai [New Generation] Festival has just announced the first wave of titles playing this year here in Toronto. Co-programmed by Midnight Eye’s Jasper Sharp and Toronto’s greatest Jfan Chris Magee from JFilm Pow Wow their purpose and goal with Shinsedai is to turn the spotlight on some of Japan’s great independent filmmakers that have emerged this past decade.
Kurosawa, Ozu, Mizoguchi, Oshima, Kitano - around the world these names immediately bring to mind the best that Japanese cinema has to offer, but now that we’re at the beginning of a new century many film fans are wondering who the next generation of great filmmakers from Japan will be. Toronto’s first Shinsedai Cinema Festival tries to answer that question by bringing some of the best work by independent Japanese filmmakers to Toronto, many for the very first time.

Set in three, 20 minute parts, Baton is an animated scifi film directed by both Ryuei Kitamura and Shunji Iwai. Details are sketchy, but we do know from Jfilm Pow Wow that the film is set "on a future Earth in which the two main characters, Apollo and Michal, will live side by side with intelligent robots". Now whether this is the basis for all 3 parts of the film is unclear. but regardless, the trailer looks incredible. It will be a mixture of both rotoscoping (ala A Scanner Darkly) and animation, with additional 2D and 3D effects, which is actually being done here in the states by Studio Titmouse.
