Aesop Rock’s Integrated Tech Solutions may be a sci-fi concept album, beginning with an opening interlude about a company promising “lifestyle and industry-specific explanations designed to curate a desired multi-experience,” but it’s uncommonly direct about being inspired by the rapper’s everyday life. Rather than following similarly themed albums by the likes of hip-hop supergroup Deltron 3030, Aesop Rock’s latest locates its own lane, concerned with life experiences, both positive and negative, that take place offline.
Aesop reins in his tendencies toward word salad throughout Integrated Tech Solutions. Songs like “Aggressive Seven” and “Mindful Solutionism” are upfront about their subject matter without veering into over-explanation. The former track, for instance, confronts mental illness, while the jazzy “By the River” finds Aesop bidding farewell to a dead friend.
Showing off the Aesop’s wide range of influences, the album’s lyrics casually run through multiple frames of reference, from...

New York rapper billy woods and LA producer Kenny Segal have tapped Future Islands singer Samuel T. Herring for “FaceTime,” the lead single from their upcoming collaborative album, Maps.
Over Segal’s wistful, horn-based production, woods describes his life on the road in vivid detail. “They was goin’ off during Playboi Carti set,” he raps. “Now they in the halls partyin’/ Checkin’ they phones, bass shake the walls/ I’m smokin’ alone in a cardigan.”
Herring provides the chorus on the track, singing about the loneliness of touring: “Continental breakfast, stick and weave, tuck and roll/ I can’t take you with me, but I be on your phone.” Stream “FaceTime” below.
“FaceTime” isn’t the first time that the trio of artists have worked together. Back in 2019, Segal produced Back at the House, Herring’s album under his alternative hip-hop moniker Hemlock Ernst. Separately, Herring was featured on woods’ 2017 track “Illegal Tints,...

In another universe, the memorable theme of "Mad Men" was an indie rock ballad. The suspenseful string composition by DJ RJD2 was actually not the series creator's first choice for the show's intro. In fact, the acclaimed musician Beck revealed that he was approached first to make the show's theme song. He turned the opportunity down — and he's regretted it ever since.
Beck first established himself as an indie rock musician in the 1990s. His hit song "Loser" propelled him to mainstream success. He went on to write and perform songs for a number of films, from dramas like "Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind" to comedies like "Nacho Libre." His songs also appeared in several unforgettable sitcoms of the early 2000s, including "The O.C." and "Friday Night Lights."

Alex Kurtzman says making 2017’s The Mummy was the worst decision of his career.
“But alas, the critical and commercial failure of the Tom Cruise-starring The Mummy movie, starring Sofia Boutella as the eponymous sarcophagus-dweller and Russell Crowe as the Nick Fury-Esque Dr. Jekyll, killed the whole thing long before it could even become a disappointingly dull cinematic universe like the other high-profile attempt to do the Avengers thing. Now, Mummy director Alex Kurtzman—who was also one of the architects of the Dark Universe itself—is speaking out about the film, telling the podcast Bingeworthy (via The Hollywood Reporter), ‘[The Mummy] was probably the biggest failure of my life, both personally and professionally.'”

For his first-ever film score, hip-hop artist Aesop Rock provides an exhilarating beat-heavy backdrop to Bushwick, the thriller directed by the Cary Murnion and Jonathan Milott, and starring Brittany Snow and Dave Bautista. “The score is gritty, emotional, unnerving and triumphant, taking us on a journey as we weave through the streets of Brooklyn,” the directors note. We had the opportunity to speak with Aesop Rock about scoring the film and bringing an added level of intensity to the thriller.
This movie was intense, following the amazing music in the opening credits, the film was void of music for more almost 20 minutes. Talk to us about some of the discussions that limited the music.
There were many phases. There were times when there were stripped-down drums playing in some of that stuff, and various other pieces were tried. I think ultimately their decision to leave the top of the movie...

Sometimes an instrumental is good enough on its own, but other times it begs for accompaniment. This remix of Star Wars sounds by Eclectic Method is one of the latter cases. Brewed out of punches, laser beams, lightsaber whorls, droid bloops, the whoosh of speeders, and the explosion of planets, it reassembles sound effects from the series’ entire history into a tight 90-second beat.
You’re going to want someone with a limber flow, because this thing keeps switching up. One can envision Aesop Rock detailing a metaphysical coming of age story over this, or maybe the new electro-friendly Vince Staples doing some double-time misanthropic shit talk from the back corner of a South Beach club. Someone please make this happen. Eclectic Method’s got a bunch of other similar Star Wars mixes you can check out here.

In Bushwick’s opening minutes grad-student Lucy (Brittany Snow) has her boyfriend die in an explosion and finds herself in the middle of a war zone on the streets of Brooklyn’s Bushwick neighbourhood. An unidentified military force is indiscriminately massacring the residents of Bushwick and causing chaos on the streets. It’s a heart-pounding start to Jonathan Milott and Cary Murnion’s gritty B-movie which offers impressively staged action and an intriguing premise, but is let down by uninspired dialogue and underdeveloped characters.
After Lucy initially emerges onto the besieged streets of Bushwick, she quickly meets ex-Marine Stupe (Dave Bautista) who claims to be on course to Hoboken, New Jersey to reconcile with his wife and children. Hip Hop has been a part of my life ever since the 1991 release of A Tribe Called Quest's timeless musical masterpiece The Low End Theory. A co-production between Paranormal Activity's Steven Schneider and The Woodshed (Wood, Daniel Noah and Josh C. Waller), Cooties was also co-written by Glee creator Ian Brennan. Fantastic music video helmer Ace Norton is set to direct.
“My friend Ian Brennan and I wanted to write a film about one of life’s most universal experiences–hatred for precocious, adorable children. And so we started work on Cooties, a film about a virus that turns school children into monsters and therefore makes it okay to beat them up with hockey sticks,” said Whannell.

Every few weeks, our music critic unplugs his headphones and weighs in on the songs bouncing about his brain. This week's list has an Aesop Rock jam, with appropriately kickass video, and a truly punk punk song — we're talking under three minutes here. (Abebe is also keeping a rolling list of his favorite songs of the year, on Spotify. Listen to it here.) Marques Toliver’s “Magic Look” His debut album should arrive this fall, and you can more or less count on its being monumentally beautiful — mannered violin figures, a pristine voice, and a way of writing songs that seems to take all that classicism and shoot it through with gospel. Just about every song he records turns out beautiful; “beauty” does not seem to be the challenge for this guy.Sleepies’ “Seriously” “I take this all very seriously,” their singer drawls, sounding like someone who … does not...

It was more than a little surreal emailing a Rhymesayers publicist for a copy of Skelethon. One, because obviously Aesop Rock’s dungeon-dark mutterings were like the Socratic ideal form of Def Jux street-rap, but also because five years after None Shall Pass, the world’s skeptics began doubting if Ian Mathias Bavitz would ever start rapping again. A new family, a dead label, a litany of oddball sidetracks, and rumblings of personal strife and loss—you couldn’t really blame Aes for an impromptu quarter-life crisis. And Skelethon is a very single-minded, sober-hearted record: entirely self-produced, dipping in gut-busting, welled-up, radically efficient rhyming...

Buckle up for the non-stop thrill-and-kill ride that is Aesop Rock’s new video. “Zzz Top” features kung fu master, Wushu teacher, and certified badass Patti Li (a.k.a. Hao Zhihua), one of China’s best athletes. She’s the only person in China’s history to have won six gold medals in a single national competition. In “Zzz Top,” though, she’s competing for her life, throwing knives and breaking necks. The track comes off Skelethon, Aesop Rock’s first record in five years.

Why yes, it is "an online, team based, action arena game with RPG elements" featuring a group of grade school students fending off the undead. More information about this PC/Mac title after the jump.
Massive Black wants to take gamers back to middle school with their project which has a goal of $100,000, and is currently at about 12% of their target with 34 days to go. The developers describe their game as a mix of third-person shooter and action RPG featuring character progression and unlockable abilities along with weapon and clothing upgrades for your tiny zombie-killing terrors.
The development team is made up of BioWare vets (Jason Chan, Senior Artist, who gets top billing in the About section), and music producers/artists Aesop Rock and Shawn Lee. Massive Black isn't exactly an indie startup, though, the San Francisco studio having provided development support on titles like Infamous 2, and most recently, Starhawk.

Aesop Rock hasn't produced a full-length solo album since 2007's None Shall Pass. In the years since, kids started and graduated high school, Rebecca Black swiftly rose and fell, and a new guy who calls himself A$AP Rocky became the person everyone thinks you're talking about when you say Aesop Rock. But that's all about to change, because the chain-smoking prophet has a 6th studio album coming out July 10, Skelethon, featuring guest spots by Rob Sonic and DJ Big Wiz from Hail Mary Mallon, and Kimya Dawson, who he's working on a separate project with as well. From what we can tell from the album's first single, "Zero Dark Thirty," there's been no spitting speed lost in the intervening years. Check the single out below, and head to Aesop Rock's official site to preview the album's trippy artwork by Spanish painter Aryz.

This is my list of my favourite Hip Hop albums of 2011. It’s neither the list of the albums that sold the best nor the list of the most anticipated albums of 2011. Just the ones that this 30 something Hip Hop fan enjoyed the most, the ones that I listened to the most, the ones that made me smile and in some rare cases even dance. Although some may call 2011 a disappointing year for Hip Hop I would actually say it was a positive year. There was plenty of good music out there you just had to look for it and that’s always been the case with most genres. A number of new artists came through with good albums and a number of older artists came back to the forefront with strong albums.
10. Phonte – Charity Starts At Home
I missed Little Brother this year so this album from Phonte was much needed and much appreciated.

San Francisco may be a city of Michelin Stars, but any meat-and-whiskey-loving local knows this town is just as fabulous for its sticky diners and dives, where the coffee is black as night and didn't come out of a cat.
Celebrating our grittier culture: hip-hop group Hail Mary Mallon (Aesop Rock, Rob Sonic and DJ Big Wiz) with the band's latest single, "Grubstake" -- an ode to the all-hours meat-and-cheese emporium on Polk Street.
(Scroll Down For Video)
"Grubstake" is rife with classic Aesop Rock rude boy Paul Reveresque lyrics. (9:30, back home, no chicks, sober. / Came out like a lion but you went out like a gopher.) And the video, filmed entirely at Grubstake, beautifully encapsulates the late-night unwind. The song may seem slightly random in subject, but as SFist wisely pointed out, it isn't even the first in which Grubstake is mentioned. Bambi Lake's "Golden Age of Hustlers...

Kimya Dawson, the puff-haired doyenne of the antifolk scene, projects a sort of den mother image. Her music, with its lo-fi confessionals and goofy wordplay, prompts fans to confide in her online and at shows. On her new album “Thunder Thighs,” she sings, “to your most desperate emails I’d say this is what I do,” offering advice in the title of the song “Walk Like Thunder,” which chronicles the aftermath of an overdose 10 years ago.

Hip hop has appropriated a lot of stuff from movies over the years: score samples, sound effects, dialogue. It's all fodder. (RZA and The Wu Tang Clan are the most obvious examples, thanks to RZA's heavy reliance on martial arts films.) Now Richard Rich and Max Tannone have created Selene, an Ep that is heavily derived from Duncan Jones' film Moon and the wonderful score to the film by Clint Mansell. Check it out after the break. io9 [1] first alerted me to Selene yesterday, and I didn't post it quickly because I needed a minute to listen and really give it a chance. As others have said, there's a touch of Kool Kieth [2] and a lot of Aesop Rock [3] influence here, but I'm ok with that -- Kool Kieth is just about unimpeachable and I've always been good with Aesop Rock's beard-hop tendencies. There are moments in Selene...

For more than two decades, younger artists have been reinterpreting the work of legendary spoken-word poet and rap forefather Gil Scott-Heron. He’s been sampled, quoted, name-dropped, and featured by Common, Blackalicious, Aesop Rock, and Public Enemy. One of his most famous poems from the ’60s took up a startling amount of real estate on Kanye West’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy last year, even as Scott-Heron returned with a stunner of a new album, his first since 1994, I’m New Here. The man’s relevance is established (gilded, even), so is a remixed version of his latest ...

American music fans had to chuckle back in 2008, when former Oasis co-founder Noel Gallagher raised a giant stink about Jay-z headlining the venerable Glastonbury Festival. Honestly? Hip-hop doesn't belong at big festivals? C'mon, Noel.
Well, we'll see how much water that big cup of righteous indignation holds in the next few days as fans of Tennessee's Bonnaroo Festival weigh in on the news that not one, but two hip-hop legends — Eminem and Lil Wayne — will top a bill that features a dozen other rappers sprinkled in among the usual cadre of jam-friendly acts, indie faves and the usual classic rock big fish.
While Bonnaroo's organizers have long shunned the "jam-band" festival tag, the annual steamy gathering on a 700-acre farm in Manchester, Tennessee,...

I’m a huge fan of artists and directors using music videos as fun little exercises in horror. Obviously, Aphex Twin’s “Come To Daddy” is one of the strongest that come to mind, and last year’s “Coffee” by Aesop Rock (I interviewed Ace Norton, the director of that clip and many others like it, here) was a four minute mix of genres and insanity. It looks like Kanye West is also taking the leap into the creepier side of things with his clip for “Monster” (which, if you’re not aware, is probably the best song on his recent release, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy). A teaser for video hit today. Check it out below!

After Black Moth Super Rainbow’s underwhelming 2009 album Eating Us—the Pennsylvania psych act’s most band-y effort to date—main brain Tom Fec decided to go it alone as Tobacco. And aside from a standout Aesop Rock cameo on 2008’s Fucked Up Friends and two Beck guest spots on this year’s stellar Maniac Meat, he’s kept it that way, piling swampy analog synths on top of fuzzy blown-out bass on top of churning hand-smacked drums. If a Tobacco track needed a vocal, Fec took care of that himself, cooing Vocoder-ed come-ons about licking witches or ...

A month after his shocking death, the Ramsey County, Minnesota, medical examiner's office has reported that indie rapper Mike "Eyedea" Larsen died of a drug overdose.
According to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, the cause of death for St. Paul native Larsen was "opiate toxicity," with no specific drugs mentioned as contributing factors. The overdose was ruled accidental.
The day after her son's death, Larsen's mother, Kathy Averill, said Eyedea did not suffer from any addictions.
Eyedea, half of the popular underground hip-hop duo Eyedea & Abilities, was remembered at a public service in St. Paul on October 28 that was attended by more than 2,000 people. A sold-out musical tribute to the rapper at Minneapolis' First Avenue club took place November 9, which would have been Eyedea's 29th birthday. Among the friends who performed at the...

This interview is part of our ongoing series related to The Influence Project.
When I saw that Dave Allen--the original bassist for the seminal post-punk band Gang of Four and the digital anthropologist at the Portland-based ad agency/production shop North--was involved in The Influence Project, I knew he should talk to Jason Harris. Harris is the president of the Sf-based ad agency/production shop Mekanism--the company producing The Influence Project with Fast Company--and a bassist who plays with the band Slumberparty. Though Slumberparty is no Gang of Four (yet, who knows?), I thought each would admire in the other their kindred spirits and have an interesting conversation about social media, rock and roll and how the punk rock ethos exists on the Internet. The exchange doesn't disappoint and even reveals a sultry definition of the word pampelmoose. A nice little bonus.

It’s been way too long since I’ve seen my girl Rosie Perez. Sure, she was on Lipstick Jungle but I wasn’t going to watch that unless it was Lipstick Lesbian Jungle — jump on this Logo!
Thankfully, she’ll soon be returning to the small screen as a guest star on Law & Order: Svu, which I watch regularly thanks to Mariska Hargitay. I can show you where to put those handcuffs, Detective Benson!
Rosie will always be a tough-acting Brooklyn goddess to me. Whenever I think of her, I either picture her dancing during the opening sequence of Do The Right Thing or the scene in White Men Can’t Jump where she’s giving Woody Harrelson’s character, Billy, the smackdown when he says Jeopardy isn’t going to call her:

An interesting, immensely talented music video and commercial director, his work warrants your attention—urgently. A bit of his résumé includes: two videos for Bloc Party, one featuring a bizarre plot to run the world by a large horse-headed creature (“Mercury”), the other, a classic man-in-monster-suit fight (“Flux”); a beautifully lensed video for Simian Mobile Disco, featuring incredibly hot girls transforming into creatures and vomiting; and the happily macabre “Why Do You Let Me Stay Here,” for Zooey Deschanel’s band, She & Him.

“Growing up in New York, I was exposed to the core of late nineties hip hop culture,” explains Brooklyn, NY native DJ Signify. “I've always loved NY hip-hop, but around 97-98, the scene got stale. Unless coming from (DJ) Premier, beats were unoriginal and uninspired, and people were really unadventurous in what they listened to. In a way, it was necessary though, because it caused a lot of guys, me included, to push hip hop in directions nobody thought it could go.”
In the late nineties, experimental hip hop was emerging from underneath the mainstream noise that plagued popular radio. Experimental had a whole new sound, wild new source of samples and loads of fresh untapped energy.
