Some great news for exhibition Monday morning: Amazon Studios is getting back into the wide theatrical-release business with Ben Affleck’s Nike movie Air, starring his fellow Good Will Hunting co-Oscar winner Matt Damon.
Air will get a global theatrical release on Wednesday, April 5, heading into the lucrative Easter weekend. This is the first wide theatrical release from Amazon since its Sundance acquisition, Mindy Kaling’s Late Night, which had a wide summer release in 2019.
I hear Air will have a longer theatrical window than Amazon Studios’ recent limited theatrical releases, before hitting Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories. It truly is a first-of-its-kind arrangement for the studio as Amazon will distribute the film globally, with Warner Bros. Matt Damon and Adam Driver face off in the first trailer for “The Last Duel,” 20th Century Studios’ historical epic from four-time Academy Award-nominated director Ridley Scott.
It’s a clash of movie titans — at least as far as awards pedigree goes — with Oscar winner Damon as Jean de Carrouges and Oscar nominee Driver as Jacques Le Gris, the two friends turned bitter rivals who participated in France’s last sanctioned duel.

In Ridley Scott’s “The Last Duel,” Matt Damon and Adam Driver battle in a duel to the death over Jodie Comer. But the first trailer shows that it’s Comer’s character who is the main protagonist of the film, and she’s the one truly risking her life.
Scott’s film is written by Nicole Holofcener (“Can You Ever Forgive Me”), Damon and Ben Affleck, who also co-stars. The historical period drama, which is based on a true story, opens in theaters from 20th Century Studios on Oct. 15.
Comer plays Marguerite de Carrouges, who claims she is viciously assaulted by a respected knight named Le Gris (Driver). When he denies the charge, she refuses to stay silent, stepping forward to accuse her attacker and leading Damon to defend his wife’s honor. But should Damon’s character lose in his duel, it will be her life that’s in danger.

Ben Affleck stars in drama The Way Back, reuniting with The Accountant director Gavin O’Connor for a story that’s close to home.
The Way Back may be a Warner Bros. Pictures drama starring Ben Affleck, but the film, which focuses on a high school basketball coach battling alcoholism, also seems to be a therapeutic performance exercise for its star, who, in recent years, has made headlines for that very issue.
Gavin O’Connor directed The Way Back, reuniting with Ben Affleck, whom he directed in the acclaimed 2014 action drama, The Accountant, for which sequel plans are still in the works. Ben Affleck reteams with his director on “The Accountant” Gavin O’Connor for his latest film, “The Way Back.” This time, though, he’s not a mild-mannered math whiz battling super spies. Instead, he’s forced to fight his own alcoholism.
“The Way Back” is a sobering and inspirational turn for Affleck, in which he plays Jack Cunningham, a former high school basketball phenom struggling with alcohol addiction and gets the opportunity to coach his old high school team. In trying to get them back on the winning path, he might be able to find his own redemption.
“I spent a lot of time hurting myself. I made a lot of bad decisions. I have a lot of regrets,” Affleck says in the trailer. “You guys earned this tonight.”
